Jean Pesce EDET 650, Fall 2013 Internship Proposal SCFCCLA Webpage August 24, 2013 After working

g on various projects in educational technology, many interesting applications have come to mind for my professional field of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS). Originally I planned to create a more robust web presence for my state professional organization, the South Carolina Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (SCATFACS). However, upon contacting my South Carolina (SC) Department of Education Associate, Dr. Eleanor Glover, the suggestion was made that I should work instead on the new site being developed for the SC chapter of the Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) youth organization of our field. As time is of the essence for many of our students striving to begin their own professional careers, this project should take priority over my original plan. This collaboration was conceived by Dr. Glover as she thought the web developer who has been contacted to create this site might serve as a qualified mentor for my internship. Therefore, this is intended to take place online with the contracted designer, Live2Create Interactive, Inc.(http://www.live2create.com/) and possibly on location at 619 King Street, #705, Columbia, SC. Further information about the specific person assigned as the contact person for SCFCCLA in this business, Jana, will be researched in creating a contract for the internship. In addition, a fellow teacher, Ms. Mary Mason, had previously volunteered to serve as the subject matter expert. This woman has taught FACS for over 25 years and served as an FCCLA advisor for the majority of that time. My current understanding from the sites of other states is that the website is to be developed for FCCLA student members and their families, and their school advisors. My preliminary impression is that this site should provide: the state and national information or links for membership qualifications; forms and schedules for participatory events especially the yearly competitions; and news from local to international sources. As I will be working with a professional contractor, I may have a limited design assignment within the site. If consulted I would like to develop a page to be designed with SC students from across the state for sharing their thoughts, activities and projects including images and sound. The number of local SC chapters, of the 650,000 nationwide, and members is to be ascertained to provide an overview of the projects impact. However, from the 2012 list of national competitive awards won by SC students (http://www.fcclainc.org/assets/files/sc_pages_from_state_medal_listings.pdf) it is obvious that there is a substantial number of active student members. Although I have not yet advised an FCCLA chapter, I have close associations with others who do and have participated as a judge for a state competition. The support for the middle school/junior high level chapters has been difficult to elicit in past years but is reportedly improving. Presently, I am preparing to move to high school level teaching in the near future. Therefore, with either situation, this project is personally inspiring in being able to create a useful tool for my job as the FCCLA creates truly engaging learning opportunities for students in FACS courses.
