1. (a) What are the various types of induced emf? Explain them, giving examples?
(b) A coil having a resistance of 100 ohms, and with 100 turns is placed in a magnetic field of
10×10−3 wb. The coil is connected to a galvanometer of resistance 200 ohms, to measure the

current flowing in the coil. The flux is reduced to 1.0 milli weber’s in 20 th of second. Calculate
i. The induced e.m.f. in the coil
ii. The current flowing in the coil. [6+10]
2. (a) Give the statement of Thevenin’s theorem and explain by taking a network.
(b) Determine the current I in the network by using Thevenin’s theorem. as shown in figure 1[10+6]

3. (a) What do you understand by the terms “ Hysteresis loss” and derive an expression for the same
in a magnetic material.
(b) Calculate the value of hysteresis loss in watts occurring a magnetic material, when the flux density
is 1.2 tesla, and the frequency of variations is 40 and the volume of the material is 400 cm3 . Take
steinmetz. Coefficient as 1.6. [8+8]
4. (a) Define the terms
i. cycle
ii. amplitude
iii. R.M.S. value and
iv. Average value of an alternating quantity.
(b) An alternating quantity is represented by i= 141.4 Sin (314.14t) Determine
i. the frequency
ii. RMS and average values and the values of current at a time of 0.01 sec after passing through
zero and increasing positively. [8+8]
5. Explain the working of a transformer at no load and full load conditions with neat diagrams. [16]
6. What is the principle of operation of a dc generator ? Why is commutator and brush arrangement
necessary for the operation of dc generator. [16]
7. (a) Explain the working principle of three phase induction motor.
(b) A 6 pole induction motor is fed by three phase 50 HZ supply and running with a full load slip of
3%. Find the full load speed of induction motor and also the frequency of rotor emf. [8+8]
8. What are the requirement of indicating instruments. Explain them in detail. [16]

(b) For the circuit as shown in figure 1, Calculate the current in the various branches and the power delivered

(b) Distinguish between potential difference between the points and the potential gradient.
(c) Find the potential difference between the points A and B and the potential gradient, given the point A is
at + 30V and point B is at -30V and separated by a distance of 2 Mts. [4+4+8]
3. (a) Define the following terms
i. Magnetic circuit
ii. Magnetic field strength
iii. magneto motive force (M M F)
iv. Reluctance.
(b) A mild steel ring has a mean diameter of 20cm and cross sectional area of 400 mm2 . Calculate
i. The reluctance of the ring
ii. m.m.f. to produce a flux of 500 micro-Weber’s
iii. Magnetic field strength. Assume the relative permeability of mild steel as 1080.0. [8+8]
4. (a) Define the following
i. Alternating Quantity
ii. R.M.S. Value
iii. Average value
iv. Form factor.
(b) A coil having a resistance of 10 ohms and an inductance of 0.2H is connected in series with a 100×10−6 F
capacitor across a 230V, 50Hz supply, Calculate
i. The active and reactive components of the current
ii. the voltage across the coil, Draw the phasor diagram. [8+8]
5. (a) Define voltage regulation of a transformer. Deduce the expression for the voltage regulation.
(b) The number of turns on the primary and secondary windings of a single phase transformer are 350 and 35
respectively. If the primary is connected to a 2.2 KV 50 HZ supply determine the secondary voltage. [8+8]
6. Explain the principle of operation of dc motor . What is back emf in dc motor. What is its effect. [16]
7. (a) Derive from first principles the emf equation of a synchronous machine..
(b) A three phase 8 pole 750 rpm star connected alternator has 72 slots on the armature. Each slot has 12
conductors and winding is short chorded by 2 slots. Find the induced emf per phase given the flux per pole
is 0.06 webers. [8+8]
8. (a) Discusss the classification of electrical instruments.
(b) Explain the significance of controlling torque and damping torque relevant to the operation of indicating
instruments. [8+8]

2. Using super position theorem, find the current in branch AB of the give network. Calculate the power loss in it.

3. (a) Derive an expression for the energy stored in a magnetic field


(b) Two coils with self inductance L1 and L2 Henrys are connected in series aiding, and the net inductance is
found to be 6 henrys and in series opposition (differential) the net inductance is found to be 2 henrys. If
the coefficient of coupling between the two coils is 0.5, Calculate the self and mutual inductances. [8+8]

(b) An 8 pole lap wound dc generator has 960 conductors, a flux of 40 milliwebers and is driven at 400 rpm.

1. (a) State and explain ohms law. What is the limitation of the law?
(b) An aluminum wire 7.5 meter long is connected in parallel with a copper wire 6m long.
When a current of 5A is passed through the combination, it is found that the current
in the aluminum coil is 3A. The diameter of the aluminum wire is 1mm. Determine the
diameter of the copper wire. Resistvity of copper is 0.017×10−6 Ω and for aluminum is
0.028×10−6 Ω. [6+10]
2. (a) State the principle of constant flux linkages.
(b) Why is it that current through an inductance does not change suddenly?
(c) Enumerate the features and uses of inductances.
(d) A current of 5A is reduced to 2A in 0.05 Sec in a coil of inductance 1.0 H calculate the
mean value of the EMF induced in the coil. [4+3+3+6]
3. (a) Derive an expression for the attraction force F of an electromagnet.
(b) A smooth core armature working in a two pole field magnet has an air gap (form iron to
iron ) of 1cm. The area of surface of each pole is 100cm2 . The flux per pole is 0.1wb. find.
i. the mechanical force exerted by each pole on the armature
ii. The energy in joules stored in the two air gaps. [8+8]
