Addiction should never be treated as a crime. It has to be treated as a health problem. We do not send alcoholics to jail in this country. Over 500,000 people are in our jails who are nonviolent drug users. -Ralph NaderConcept: Since the 19th century when Americans first discovered new wonder drugs like morphine, heroin, and cocaine, our society has been confronted with the ever-growing problem of drug abuse and addiction. Since the U.S. government declared a war on drugs four decades ago the U.S. is still at odds as to how best we should effectively manage drug use and addiction in our country. Directions: Your job is to choose one of the controversial issues in drugs and society, evaluate the current research/trends on the issue and to present your findings to the class using SlideRocket. Email me your 3rd Party/Shared presentation before due date. Groups: Place in order your top three. 1. Should the U.S. Put More Emphasis on Stopping the Importation of Drugs? Are Too Many Children Receiving Ritalin? Should Non-Violent Drug Users Go to Prison? Should Pregnant Drug Users Be Prosecuted? Are E-Cigarettes a Healthier Alternative? Should Employees Be Required to Participate in Drug Testing? 2. 3. Should Needle Exchange Programs Be Supported? Is Alcoholism Hereditary? Should the Decision to Use Steroids Be Left to Athletes? Is Prozac Overprescribed? Should Drugs Be Legalized? Should the U.S. Drinking Age Remain at 21?

Background Information and History 8 1. Pertinent details/background information necessary to understand issue. 2. May be necessary to go over the science or history of the issue. 3. Provide a comprehensive timeline of the issue noting significant events, dates, and current state of any pending or established legislation. C. What is the controversy? 3 1. Lay it out to class right away, plain English. 2. Underline or highlight the ethical or moral dilemma. D. What are the two varying opinions on this matter? 6 1. Adequately support both positions (and why each side feels this way). 2. Provide 1 Quote (from a prominent backer) that characterizes each sides position. E. Impact on society? 12 1. How or who does this issue affect in our society? 2. Must support through research. What does the previous and current research say? 3. Must cite at least 4 sources per person in your group. (According to) F. Who are major backers of each of the opinions? 6 1. Not their opinions but literally who supports each side. 2. Include major organizations, groups, political views and agendas.
