here was just no way thered be enough room inside Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel Church to hold the numbers of people wishing to pay their respects to Mario Borgatello, Sr., co-founder along with his older brother Charles of the now ubiquitous MarBorg Industries, which began as Channel Disposal when Mario was just 18 years old. And, there clearly wasnt enough room; the choir lofts were opened to accommodate more mourners, while others simply gathered around the doors hoping to partake of the ceremonial good-bye. Charles and Mario and their friend William Walker later formed a small group to create what became and is now Montecito Village, the nearly five acres of retail establishments on either Mario Borgatello, Sr., (1918 2013) side of East Valley Road just west of San Ysidro in the upper village. The brothers split the various businesses in 1974, with Charlie taking over the operation of Montecito Village and Mario splitting off from Channel Disposal and founding what came to be MarBorg Industries. The sons of the founders (Marios sons Mario Jr. and David at MarBorg) and Charlies son C. Norman (Norm) Borgatello with Montecito Village have continued to maintain and advance the vision of their respective fathers. Everyone whose refuse is picked up at their home and is serviced by a MarBorg truck knows what an excellent work ethic has been passed on not only to the founders progeny, but to everyone that works for the company. Pickups are made at virtually the same time every prescribed day; they are never late; dump trucks are manned with employees who run (yes, run) into every driveway to collect customers containers. There are virtually no holidays too important to cause a MarBorg truck to miss a pickup, Christmas and July 4th being the two exceptions we are aware of, although there may be a couple others. MarBorg Trucks are always clean, as are the uniformed runners, who are always friendly, respectful, and considerate. Mario Borgatello, Sr. was born April 18, 1918 and passed away last Thursday, August 15. He leaves behind his three sisters: Augusta, Laura, and Ida, all of whom are in their nineties, his sons, their children and grandchildren. Mario, of course, will be missed, but more importantly he will also be warmly remembered for a long, long time by those he fathered, inspired, and loved.

The Rescue Mission Of Mr. & Mrs. Kraus

Shari Childs, whose mom, Edith (Edie) Ostern, appeared on our cover last issue as a two year old, seemed pleased with our write-up of a documentary called Fifty Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. & Mrs. Kraus. I however, made a major informational mistake by confusing two different documentaries showing in the same theater on two different days on two completely different subjects. So, my apologies to Bacara marketing head Anne Stephany and the makers of Red Obsession, the wine documentary scheduled to unspool at the Bacara on Saturday, August 24, two weeks before its national roll-out. We wish them great success. As for Fifty Children, it will screen one day only, at 6 pm, Thursday, August 22 in the Bacara Resort & Spa Theater. The screening is co-sponsored by Bnai Brith of Santa Barbara (Sharis husband is cantor Mark Childs). Attendees will be offered free popcorn, soft drinks, and a 20% discount at Miro or the Bistro for that evening. The films producer, Steven Pressman, will be on hand for a Q&A afterwards. That black & white image of two-year-old Edie Ostern was taken in Vienna on November 10, 1938, the day following Kristallnacht Night of Broken Glass , the Nazi-organized anti-Jewish demonstrations that marked the launching of The Final Solution that led directly to the death camps. Edie looks particularly forlorn in the photo; her father had been taken from the family home

Do You Believe in Ken Berris?

ontecito film director and advertising ace Ken Berris has launched a project he can really get his teeth into! It will enable readers to be a creative part of a new childrens book about the Land of the Tooth Fairy. The idea has been germinating for almost 20 years and Ive finally decided to do it, says Ken, who has been a creative director for major ad agencies like Ogilvy & Mather, making more than 500 commercials. We hope to create a new childrens classic. To raise the $32,000 needed for the project Ken, father of Days of Our Lives NBC soap actor Blake Berris, 27, has launched a Kickstarter project, a website set up a couple of years ago, which raises monies for worthy creative projects.

Richard covered the Royal Family for Britains Daily Mirror and Daily Mail before moving to New York to write for Rupert Murdochs newly launched Star magazine in 1978; Richard later wrote for New York magazines Intelligencer. He continues to make regular appearances on CBS, ABC, and CNN, and moved to Montecito six years ago.

I initially did a lot sketches six years ago, but I really want to enlist a group of top world class illustrators to go with the narrative, that I will write. I will let the visuals tell the story over the thirty-two to thirty-eight pages. The plan is to have the book locked up by mid-November in readiness for Christmas. The creative process works better under pressure. Ken, who directed the film The Manor with Peter OToole and Greta Scacchi in 1999 and is now working on a new movie project, The Major, about top Victorian cyclist Marshall Taylor who set innumerable world records, is offering suitable incentives to attract donors for his dental fairy tale. For $2,500 you can have your family name memorialized in the book, while

The 107-year biannual Transpacific Yacht Race, dubbed the Transpac, is a distance of 2,560 miles from Point Fermin, San Pedro, ending off the Diamond Head Lighthouse in Honolulu, Hawaii, and is considered one of the toughest events on the globe, famous for fast downwind sailing under spinnaker in trade winds. $3,500 will enable your childrens likeness to be included in the illustrations. It really answers the big questions kids want to know, adds Ken. Why does she need all the teeth and where does all the money come from, among them? It will be filled with positive messages for children about commitment, courage, believing in themselves, and the importance of friends. just a little bit more. On my merry way with a sway, if I may, go far, far away, like a red hot gamma ray. Blindly going somewhere, I dont know where. Almostfound sweet nowhere. No more spicy rum, in the fading sun. Been too long on the run. Couldnt find a comfortable fit, and everyone had already quit. So, I let go of it. Could have only me, but, she didnt see, that I wanted simply to be. Living on the brink, being betrayed by phonies and finks, Ive often gone to the drink. Believe me Ive tried. Several times got burned and fried, trying to do right before I die. Since Im not quite done, a few more bits of fun, while I continue to run. Well, I didnt say goodbye, when I flew up into the sky, to listen to God cry. I wanted God to decide, when I was going to die, but, God just sighed and closed her eyes. Bill Dalziel Montecito

Going Native

dont find Bob Hazards call for cityhood to be disingenuous, just misdirected (Still Pumping For Cityhood? Glenn Jordans Letter to the Editor # 19/31). The effort needs to be aimed at Montecito becoming a separate independent nation. There is no doubt that Chumash Native Americans inhabited the Montecito lands. By becoming part of the Chumash Nation, Montecito would have the largest population of the tribe and could control its own future. Being part of a Native American Nation still gives us all the rights of being U.S. citizens, but not Santa Barbara orphans. With a casino already here, a special Native American place in Sea Meadow, this should be a slam dunk. Think about dealing with Caltrans as an independent nation. Boggles the mind! The possibilities are endless and much better than trying for Montecito cityhood. Where can I sign the Chumash Annexation petition?

Dave Evans Montecito (Editors note: We do like your thinking on this, Dave, and there may be even more incentives worthy of consideration. For example: Montecito homeowners would be taxed at the federal level but not at the State or County level. If a homeowner decides to build a little guesthouse for an aging parent or in-law, he would not have to go through the normal procedures such as the MBAR, Montecito Planning Commission, or Board of Supervisors. Thered be no call for an EIR and no one other than the tribal council could stop it. Not to mention, that if our Sea Meadow Casino begins to throw off real profits, wed be in line to receive quarterly or even monthly checks. There really would be great advantages to being part of a tribe. Pass the petition! J.B.)

One easy way to preserve the character of Montecito is to support the local merchants. Buy books at Tecolote, not Amazon. Buy hardware supplies at Village Hardware, not Orchard Supply Hardware. The Borgatello family provides us with a very nice upper village. The least we can do is support the merchants there! Larry Lambert Montecito

We would need sincere cooperation from real estate companies that are selling or renting properties, owners of existing properties, and input from the residents that are concerned about their changing neighborhoods and entire community. It may clearly be more of an issue when the properties are so close together rather than on more acreage. One of my concerns is that when we had a down market in Montecito, some people decided this was a good place to invest, use it as a rental, with no intention of ever living here. That attitude certainly changes the sense of community we have all grown to cherish. Clearly it is a problem being faced all over California if not other parts of our country. In my minimal research I saw the issue in Sonoma County, Dana Point, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Carmel, Santa Cruz, etc. They are all grappling with different solutions but are concerned. The future is us, as they say. Thank you for reaching out to the community and giving us a chance to be heard. Sybil Rosen Montecito (Editors note: The Hermosillo enclave, along with the Sinaloa neighborhood, the hedgerow, Santa Rosa Lane, etc., are clearly areas where a sense of community prevails. However, areas where larger estates dominate are less so. A running joke in some of those neighborhoods is that they only get to know who their neighbors are after an earthquake, when people move outside and away from buildings and other structures. It would indeed be a good idea to hold a series of forums on the subject and to try to come to some sort of mutual understanding or Gentlemans Agreement concerning short-term rentals. J.B.)

I was happy to see my letter printed as well as a letter from Toffee Leftwich (The Future of Montecito and Stop the Noise!, MJ # 19/32). I really appreciated your comments. I would love to see some kind of meeting of the minds with all the parties. Perhaps the Montecito Association would open the conversation at a public forum. I recommend we have an experienced facilitator.

As a founder of the Taj Mahal Roundabout Players, I think Ill run for Mayoress. Always did want a heavy gold Chain of Office. But enough chit chat lets see how we are doing so far. I seem to remember that the Taj Mahal Roundabout was supposed to help ease congestion on lower Coast Village Road. Didnt work. I can remember gentle walks with visits to the charming and original shops along Coast Village Road. I feel sorry for the merchants who must miss foot traffic and customers. Now we are told that a mega building for the YMCA on San Ysidro will be a boon to the community. Has anybody tried to go down San Ysidro in the afternoon? Remember lessons learned in Logic 101, i.e., never build something you cant afford to maintain. An increase of 10 percent, never mind 33 percent in the membership 22 29 August 2013

of the Y, will make San Ysidro completely impassable and right across from the school. Good thinking. And while Im on the subject I havent seen many people walking on the expensive walking path on San Ysidro, although I have seen some people overcome by exhaust fumes from the idling cars. Finally, Id like to know what drives people to find a little piece of paradise and then spend every waking moment devising things that will turn it into a carbon copy of the place they fled. When they have ruined Montecito, I suppose they will pack up and go on up the coast like locusts and set about ruining that. Now, where shall we put the skyscraper and the marble city hall? We surely are going to need them, if we dont run out of water first. Yours Mayorally, Christina Allison Montecito (Editors note: You forgot to add the comprehensive Dream Scheme being planned for Montecito Union School. That, by itself, wont really add to an increase in traffic, but you know the old or rather new saying: Build It And They Will Come. Sierra Clubs Tangerine Trek

We had a fast, energetic group of 12 people Sunday on our Sierra Club hike to the top of Tangerine Falls! The trail is part of the growing web of Cold Spring trails in Montecito, off of the West Fork Cold Spring trail. After reaching the top of the falls, we then hiked back along a trail following the streambed back to the old Homestead. After the steep exposed trail to the lookout, this was a pleasant, flat, woodsy, cool stroll. Although we were following the streambed, we saw almost no water at all in the stream except a few small pools up near the Homestead (no big surprise after seeing that the falls were bone dry). At the end point is what I have been told was a root cellar, a small stone structure. Then we made our way 22 29 August 2013

Dear Mr. Hazard, Thank you for the editorial opportunities you are currently making in the Montecito Journal for us residents to offer ideas for our communitys wellbeing. Ive enjoyed living here for 42 years. From early 1970s to mid 1990s, we sailed from Santa Barbara Harbor almost monthly to the two then privately owned islands: Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa (we never could up-wind enough to get to San Miguel), and cautiously sailed only around but not near Anacapa. By we I mean usually a crew of three or four. We were lucky to sail in those days many fine yachts the Parthenons of Marine Architecture designed to perform well while cruising for weeks far out to sea, past the continental shelf deep below and very dark, while watching the Montecito mountain-scape disappear below the ocean horizon. We had an old 1936 navigation book of charts, maps, and photos of hidden cove anchorages. Our second favorite is on the south-facing open oceanside of Santa Cruz. ead N Post postal clerk Robin Richardson-Romero has married longtime boyfriend Aaron Machado. The couple, who were married on August 11, dated for 15 years before saying their vows at Mission Villa in Santa Barbara. A reception was held following the ceremony at Upper Manning Park in Montecito. Robin, who is now Robin Machado, has worked for the popular book and gift store in Montecito for the last 12 years. Previously, she worked for the Santa Barbara Historical Museum for 17 years. She says she met Aaron through friends of her late husband, who passed away in 1992. We just clicked, she said. Aarons family (a different Romero family) has lived in Montecito for seven generations, and he is well known in the area. Now retired, he was a mechanic at J&S East Valley Garage for 39 years, Robin tells us. The fact that both of our families have been in the area for many generations really bonded us, she said. About 35 family members and friends gathered to watch the couple say their vows; over 75 people met them at Upper Manning to celebrate with cake and food, catered by Vons in Montecito. The couple, who do not have children, plan to stay in Montecito, the new bride says.

Earlier this summer, Montecito Boy Scout Troop 33 marked a resurgence. The 75-year-old troop, which is the second oldest in Santa Barbara, was temporarily halted due to lack of youth participation, but a significant

surge in new membership has revitalized the group, which recently merged with Troop 50 from Carpinteria. Scouting is a year-round program for boys ages 11 to 17, designed to build future community leaders; the Boy Scouts program is over 100 years old. Troop 33 is chartered by Our Lady of Mount Carmel and is open to any boy in the Santa Barbara area. Pack 108 is the Cub Scout Pack in Montecito. The scouts participate in several community events in town, including Beautification Day and the Village Fourth parade; they also sell Christmas trees at a lot in Carpinteria. The Boy Scouts are a non-profit organization. The scouts are back to holding their weekly meeting at the Upper Manning Youth Center. Meetings run from 4 pm to 5:30 pm every Sunday. Interested boys and their parents are invited to attend a meeting, or contact scoutmaster Dave Cantin at scubadc@aol.com. 22 29 August 2013

roadway comes to Santa Barbara when the Music Academy of the West (MAW) puts on its annual Cabaret show in the Rotunda of Fess Parkers DoubleTree Resort. They light the lights and have nothing to hit but the heights. There were 525 guests for cocktails, dinner and to spotlight 19 fellows (MAW summer students) who sang in the Great White Way style accompanied by their music

director, the award winning Gerald Sternbach. Our own Carol Burnett added to the pizzazz as the creative contributor. She ought to know since among her many awards she has received 25 Emmy Awards and 12 Peoples Choice Awards, which is more than any other actress. Famous diva Marilyn Horne is the director of the MAW voice program

for the summer. She has garnered awards from around the world, literally, and reigned supreme in opera for 40 years. She first sang in public at age two and has performed in more than 1,300 recitals and made over 100 recordings. Frank Goss, the able auctioneer, told the audience, Marilyn has been named one of the top one hundred opera singers of all time. We are training the next generation of classical musicians, according to MAW president Scott Reed. There were 1,681 auditions this year with 140 fellows ranging in age from 18 to 33 being chosen for the scholarships. They participate in about 200 public events in the eight weeks, half of which are free of charge. Currently we have 33 former fellows at the Met, 32 in Los Angeles, 12 in the New York Philharmonic and 30 in San Francisco.

MAW has helped prepare more than 6,000 young artists for careers in symphony, opera, chamber, and more throughout the world since 1947. Cabaret is MAWs major fundraiser, which always has spectacular live auction items like Carol Burnett costarring with the winner at a dinner party for 12 with Carol as a guest and entertainer. Or dinner on stage of Hahn Hall with Marilyn Horne regaling guests with stories from her legendary career. The auction alone raised $126,000. Regina Roney headed the Cabaret committee with Sharon Bradford and Phyllis Smith as advisory chairs. Helping were Lida Light Blue, Nancy Bollay, Jo Ann Chase, Betsy Coates, Jane Dailey, Patricia Durham, Rick Erickson, Judith Getto, Dani Hahn, Carole Halsted, Margaret Kemp, Stephen Singleton, Elaine Toledo, and Cheryl Ziegler. Stylist and wardrobe consultants were Mindy Denson and Beverlie Latimer. We sat under the stars and watched future stars perform on stage in a nightclub atmosphere. This years summer season has come to a close, but there will be more for you in the summer of 2014.

Allan Glaser, Corinna Gordon and Tab Hunter enjoying Los Suenos

Los Suenos, the estate formerly owned by Joan Cohn Harvey, the widow of Columbia Pictures president Harry Cohn, was recently opened to the public for an elegant evening a rare opportunity. This was courtesy of the current owners, Gretchen and Robert Lieff, and to benefit the National Historic Landmark estate Casa del Herrero. Both estates share the same architect, George Washington Smith, while his partner Lutah Maria Riggs collaborated with him on Los Suenos. The Casa was one of his earlier works (1922-1925) while Los Suenos was one of his last (1930). This is the first time Casa del Herrero has held a fundraiser in a private home, which expands how many guests may attend, and it was a sellout at 250. The Casa has a conditional use permit, which is limiting. As executive director Molly Barker addressed the crowd from a balcony overlooking the lower garden, it reminded me of Eva Peron. A very dramatic scene! Molly told us, Smith designed forty houses in only a decade. The National Historic Landmark designation for the Casa is the highest in the land. It is truly the communitys home. Former UCSB curator Melinda Gandara held court in the house with many of the Los Suenos building plans to show us. She knows every-

A Big Year for the Jenkins Family

Have you seen the Light?

onsidering how busy and involved they are, not only in business but also with various equestrian groups as well as the community at large, it could be said that every year is a big year for the Jenkins family of Santa Barbara. But 2013 is turning out to be especially memorable for Si and Karen Jenkins and their son, Josiah. Well known as proprietors of Jedlickas, one of Santa Barbaras oldest businesses with a second location in Los Olivos, Si and Josiah are perhaps the more public faces of the Jenkins family. But anyone who knows them through the horse world knows that Karen is the oil that keeps the familys equestrian efforts humming smoothly, and that she is the most formidable rider of the bunch. Without Karen Jenkins/Mother taking care of the horses, feeding them and exercising them daily, neither Si nor I would be doing the horse events we do on the well groomed and fit horses we ride, concedes Josiah.

Karen Jenkins wearing the silver belt buckle she won as Filly of the Year for completing more trail rides in 2012 than any other member of the womens horseback riding group known as the Fillies (photo by Lynn P. Kirst)

established to promote trail riding and fellowship among horsewomen. Karen is a Charter Member of the Fillies, which was founded in 1994 and is limited to just 100 ladies. In 2003, the Fillies established the Filly of the Year award, a beautiful silver belt buckle inscribed with the year and name of the winner. The coveted buckle was meant to inspire participation in the group, which is member-driven as to the number of rides offered every year (usually held on private ranches in Santa Barbara County). At the Fillies annual dinner held in February at the Alisal Ranch in Solvang, Karen was named Filly of the Year for 2012. This was in recognition of her completion of all nineteen rides that the Fillies held last year a lot of miles on the trail.

One way that Karen keeps their horses fit is with frequent trail riding, which she has enjoyed since girlhood. She met Si at a Santa Barbara County Riding Club function in Montecito (he saddled her horse for her when she was late to a ride), and they married in 1961. Both have served on the board of the Montecito Trails Foundation. One of the many equestrian groups to which Karen belongs is the Fillies, an invitational womens riding club 22 29 August 2013

Coup De Grace
 by Grace Rachow
Ms. Rachow has been attending and helping out with the Santa Barbara Writers Conference for the past 20 years, and she will miss Cork Millners presence there.

Quintessential Cork
met Cork Millner in his writing class over 30 years ago, but our first encounter might just as well have been at a wine tasting, on a tennis court, or at a polo match. This was a man who lived everymans dream of retiring early and having a long second career living his many passions and writing about them all. My hope back then was to make a career of writing and selling magazine articles, and lo and behold, there was an adult education course taught by Cork on just that. The classroom was packed. I sat in the back where I wouldnt have to do anything but listen. Cork looked as if hed just come from a fashion shoot for GQ. And he could skewer us all with his repartee and sophistication. I was fresh off the farm and was lucky to make it to class in something spiffier than overalls. I wasnt sure this class was a good fit for me, but I figured if I stayed, Id learn something.

Cork Millner (1931-2013)

Every week Cork brought examples of magazine articles hed written and sold celebrity interviews, reviews of wineries, tales of being on TV game shows, to name a few. The official bio on his website states that he wrote and sold over 400 articles during his lifetime, but I think that number must be modest, because he showed us at least that many that first term. Cork was a fine teacher, and I learned much about freelancing. Writing is tough work. Marketing is tougher. And if you dont have a repertoire of passions and creative ideas, you have nothing to write about. When the term was over, after the final class, I put away my typewriter (because thats just how long ago it was) and decided to get a real job where I was paid money for doing something odious. And meanwhile all the things Id learned in Corks writing class brewed in my mind. Over the months of his teaching, Id heard much about the life and times of Cork Millner. Hed been a navy aircraft carrier pilot. I could only imagine the nerve it took to take off and land on a vessel even once, much less 850 times. As I toiled away at my day job, I tried to imagine something equivalent in my short, boring life. Well, once on a dare from a fellow seven year old, I hopped on the back of a pig and rode it for two or three feet before it dumped me into the mud. Funny, yes, but that stunt required more stupidity than nerves of steel. No, I was convinced I had nothing at all to write about, and I should leave the writing of clever magazine articles to the likes of Cork Millner. He had the lifestyle and the moxie to

make a freelance career work. It turns out the desire to write doesnt just go away. It took me 10 years to work myself back toward being a writer. To learn more about the craft, I signed up for the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. I was still nervous and shy, but I was happy to see Cork Millners familiar face. He was a right hand man to founders Barnaby and Mary Conrad, as well as teaching nonfiction writing at the conference. In that workshop Cork mentioned that when he lived in Spain, hed become an aficionado of bullfighting, a bent he had in common with the one-time matador, Barnaby Conrad. I learned that at times, under the stress of keeping the conference running smoothly, Cork could be a bit irascible and bull-like. But, in the end, it was his sense of humor that always won out. He was a man of relentless wit as well as being a damn good teacher of writing. After a week of writing workshops, we all unwound at the SBWC talent show. I was surprised when Cork got up and performed a wordperfect Shelley Berman routine, complete with Bermans exquisite timing. I can only guess at the number of nonfiction writers who got good starts in a workshop taught by Cork Millner. After 30-some years of teaching, this number has to be huge, and we all owe him for his help. I like to imagine Cork at the Pearly Gates. Hes dressed in a white Armani suit. The brim of his hats at a dapper angle. He pours St. Peter a glass of fine vintage wine, and the gates open wide. Lets drink to that. MJ

beach at the north shallow end. Above the beach cliffs are six to eight toyons (macrocarpa), shrubs indigenous to the islands here. Now in our era, they are still there striving and easily recognizable. These island plants are a very distinct reminder of the great permanence of self-maintenance of the living and fascinating natural environment in our area, here on the continent side of the Santa Barbara Channel. From our seacoast up to the south-facing mountaintops are the also permanent and self-maintaining streams which flow all year both above grade and below in their below-grade aquifers, pulled along by permanent gravity giving all-natural spontaneous life vital throughways from mountains to sea, home to a great variety of species. This is the permanent, true, living life force of nature meant by rural or semi-rural here in our Montecito that has been reliable and sustainable for our human and other species for thousands of years. High Culture Once Thrived Here Semi-rural also means semi-urban. When we can control our human urbanizing to recognize, know about through observing and learning of these life-giving forces of nature, we can permanently help maintain and preserve our unique (to history) human livelihood here. Upon receiving my 1974 UCSB Master of Fine Arts degree, I had learned there are seven traditional fine arts in nearly all cultures around the earth: architecture, sculpture, painting, literature, music, choreography, and theater. The fine arts usually maintain a permanent historic record in all cultures, currently practiced and still there in evidence down to the unrecorded passage of time. During the 1960s through to late 1990s, there was a thriving multicultural, very cosmopolitan culture of all the fine arts here that even led to the foundation of the current Santa Barbara art museums. If you would like an individual sample of this high culture era visit my updated website at http://tom kress.artspan.com. The Montecitans listed on the collectors list for paintings and fine homes give a sampling of the unique and lively culture we lived in here then. We designed and built permitted, quality, long-lasting, permanent homes meant to self-maintain generation after generation and to not interfere with historic human nor historic natural character. Our urbanization became an aspect of local natural rural character with the knowledge that the lands and seas will some day reclaim their non-human way of living. Mrs. Earth has great laws to follow, but no mercy when they are not. It is the 21st century culture of world

greed and plundering we see and hear about now that is our most disruptive force here today. Our semi-urban plans are in trouble because of the current lack of planning, for instance, for employee affordable housing for our local businesses. (If you need another example email mary@mon tecitoexecutive.com.) The current traffic nightmares in both the upper and lower villages is partially caused by this planning omission (which is mysteriously supported by local housing). Some newly-owned estates have gluttonous use of local resources, such as in un-naturally huge lawns and gardens, or golf courses with wells draining the stream aquifers from neighbors downstream. Bigotry and elite thinking always seem to follow this attitude problem. But once discovered, observed, learned, and respected, our beautiful well-functioning town environs between the sunny south-facing ocean, islands, sea channel, and mountains, is a health-preserving, multi-cultural, very active, and alive community, sensitive to the greater overall natural master plan in its social, cultured, native, and historic vitalities. Vida! Lifes exciting here, daily; permanent and self-maintained friendships are here now and much loved as are our health-giving and rewarding living conditions, which lead to peace and understanding wisdom, in my artist view. Thanks for your reading. Respectfully yours, Tom Kress Montecito

Former MJ Style columnist Lilly Tam Cronin left us a few years ago to stay home with her then-newborn daughter, Teddy. Now the mother of a toddling two year old, Cronin has gone back to work, heading up the non-profit and small business division of Meritus Payment Solutions, a payment processing company based in Los Angeles. Im happy to be back at work. I missed the interaction with adults in a professional environment, Cronin told us. Opportunity came knocking when the CEO of Meritus and Cronins family friend, Hiep Tran, offered Lilly a position with the company; she now works out of her Montecito homebased office. Non-profits and small businesses stand to gain the most from Meritus, as they qualify for rates that are significantly lower than industry standards. By keeping rates low for non-profits, organizations can keep more of the donations to help their cause, Cronin said. Its a win-win situation. Non-

profits and small businesses tend to fall through the cracks, she explained. Cronin, who also helps train Meritus employees, travels to Santa Barbaraarea non-profits and small businesses, and assesses whether a company stands to save money by switching merchant service providers. She says the industry is plagued with providers who charge hidden fees, require long-term contracts, and have impersonal customer service. My customer service is a mix of an old school

handshake yet taking advantage of what technology has to offer to keep in touch, Cronin said. I truly enjoy caring for my clients. Recently, Cronin visited a small non-profit in Montecito, and found that the business was categorized in the wrong division; she helped them save close to $10,000 per year. Thats ten thousand dollars they can put back into their services, and hopefully help more families who need scholarships, she said. In addition to their non-profit division, Meritus provides merchant services to a laundry list of industries, including retail, e-commerce, direct response, wholesale, healthcare, property management, and more. You will still see Lilly in the pages of MJ; her custom crossword puzzles, featuring facts about Montecito and Santa Barbara-based businesses, will be published here. The Bacara Resort & Spa has announced the reopening of its popular beachside restaurant, The Bistro. Inspired by the elegance of the Italian Riviera, The Bistro has undergone an extensive renovation. According to Bacara rep Anne

Stephany, the new dining room incorporates traditional elements such as chiseled ironwork, upholstered panels and Moorish archways, which help to create a fresh, modern aesthetic. Like California, the new look represents a measure of balance and contrasts: Old World while modern, spacious while intimate and understated while luxurious, said Stephany. Led by Chef de Cuisine Chris Turano, who earned the role after competing on Food Networks Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell, the new restaurant blends flavors of Italy with the finest locally sourced ingredients. Menu highlights offer traditional Italian dishes, such as pastas and brick-oven flatbreads, complemented by lighter, coastal cuisine. Signatures include Veal Milanese, Santa Barbara Cioppino, Rigatoni with Italian Fennel Sausage, and Brick Oven Roasted Sea Bass. The Bistro celebrates the art of Italian dining with gusto, said Kathleen Cochran, general manager of Bacara Resort & Spa. Our goal is to serve food with love; we want our guests to feel like theyre dining al fresco at a warm and inviting villa in Italy. Diners can relax indoors or out on a spacious oceanfront patio while savoring time-tested family recipes by Chef Turano. Taking the helm of an Italian restaurant is a natural progression for Turano, who grew up cooking Italian cuisine with his Sicilian-born father. My approach is to keep food

Burglary on East Valley Road

PUBLIC HEARING (BOARD VOTE)

Monday, 5 August, 11 am Deputy Gallaher responded to a restaurant on East Valley Road. The manager told the deputy that the previous night, he had placed two bank bags containing cash in a safe in his office, which is located near the restaurant. When he returned the next day, he found the safe ajar, and the two bank bags missing. An envelope containing cash tips for employees was still in the safe. The manager asked the Deputy, along with Senior Deputy Padilla, to conduct interviews of the employees. It appeared the office door and the door to the safe were entered by someone familiar with the restaurant, as there was no forced entry. The deputies conducted interviews of ten employees, none of whom said they knew anything about the burglary. The case was forwarded to detectives. MJ

rtists come and go with the Santa Barbara Studio Artists, but rarely has one as well known as James Bud Bottoms signed up for the organization that sponsors its annual Open Studios Tour this weekend. Bottoms story is the stuff of legend. After earning a degree in art from UCSB in 1952, he stuck around town spending 35 years in the corporate world as an art director, the last 16 at Santa Barbaras GE TEMPO think tank. But then he lost his job and his marriage of 20 years within one year, and found himself living on a boat in the harbor searching for a new career at age 55. I walked across the street to SBCC to take some art classes, and the next thing I know they are having a contest (to create a fountain) for the harbor, and the teacher suggested I enter, Bottoms recalled. Surprising even himself, Bottoms won the commission, which didnt pay, but let him learn on the job as he navigated politics and the art studio for a full four years to create the Dolphin Family Fountain, which sits at the entrance of Stearns Wharf, one of the most recog-

nizable symbols of the city. Creating that famous fountain, and his whole later-life career as a sculptor, came about by literally following a dream and his therapists advice. After my divorce I was seeing a psychologist, trying to figure out what to do with my life, he explained. He

wanted to talk about dreams, and Id had one of a woman hanging on a dolphin flying into the sky. He said, Show me a picture. I tried to draw it but it didnt work. So I decided to sculpt a piece... When it was done, I felt so satisfied. I was totally involved and I knew it was my passion. Still, theres a long journey between coming up with the concept, fashioning something out of a mold-able material and having a finished bronze sculpture that can be sold or displayed. And with no real income to speak of, Bottoms was still not sure. But then a friend gave me some money to have it cast in bronze. I took it to a foundry up in Berkeley and worked with them to learn the process. On the way back to Santa Barbara to show it to my sons, I stopped over in San Luis Obispo to rest. The door on my VW camper was open and this woman walking down the street glances into the car and says, Whats that? Can I buy it? I came up with a big fat price off the top of my head thinking shed walk on by. But she

wanted it and wrote me a check right there on the spot. And Im thinking, This might be a pretty good profession. Now, Bottoms has sculptures in public places all over the area including a monument that looks like a sundial in Port Hueneme to commemorate a plane crash in which 88 people died, the whale tale benches at the end of the breakwater in the harbor and in Shoreline Park, a sea lion at the Biltmore in Montecito, kids riding dolphins for Shriners Hospitals for Children in Los Angeles, and a California condor in memory of Dick Smith at the Museum of Natural History near Carmel plus dolphin fountains in several of Santa Barbaras sister cities around the world. Im really proud of those pieces, Bottoms said. Bronze is forever. It sets a tone for a community to say what they respect now and in the future. But Bottoms said he rarely does much work beyond commissions. But there are a few. Ive done lots of children playing on dolphins, which sell well in Hawaii. There are five galleries that sell my work everywhere from Massachusetts to Hawaii. Ive got a two-foot tall one of a man hanging on a dolphin. I do like to do that

At the first official Fiesta party, known as La Primavera, the annual poster is officially unveiled. Old Spanish Days board member Denise Sanford holds the poster depicting Si and Karen Jenkins, exemplifying the 2013 theme Vaqueros y Vaqueras. Josiah Jenkins commissioned artist Lorna Dillon to create the image from which the poster was made, then gave the original painting to his parents for their 52nd wedding anniversary this summer.

In a case of life imitating art, Si and Karen Jenkins bring the Fiesta poster to life in Santa Barbaras famous parade known as El Desfile Histrico. Si rides Homer while Karen rides her roan horse named Boone.

both graduated from Santa Barbara High School, both gained their first work experience by sweeping floors at Jedlickas, and both, after attending their respective colleges, have ended up as boss at one of the oldest Western stores in the West. Josiah is known as a tireless worker, who first volunteered for the Fiesta Stock Horse Show and Rodeo in 1976. He has been a Director of Old Spanish Days since 1993, and even though he was El Presidente this year, Josiah still placed and filled the water troughs for the horses on the parade route and picked them up afterwards. So how did he manage to attend more than ninety Fiesta events, 50-60 of which occur during a 10-day period? Sleep is overrated, said Josiah. Four hours a night is all you need as long as you keep the activity level up while awake. If you slow down, the body will go to sleep.

birthday. But with the hoopla and nonstop schedule of Old Spanish Days, there wasnt time for yet another big party. So just how did Si celebrate his milestone birthday? We went to dinner at Harrys! said Si, referring to his favorite watering hole. But the real celebration is coming up soon, when he and Karen will make a trip from Chicago to Montreal on a 130-passenger boat. But they still might find time for a horseback ride during one of the shore excursions. MJ

Art Exhibition to Expose Invisible Realms

Thirteen artists from around the world will exhibit their work as part of Invisible Realms: Encountering the Sacred August 22-October 12 in the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art. Most of the artists will be available at a free, public reception Thursday, August 29, from 4 to 6 pm. The featured artists are: Lynn Aldrich of Los Angeles; Fabian Astore of Sydney, Australia; Adam Belt of Carlsbad, California; Kent Anderson Butler of Los Angeles; Linda Ekstrom

of Santa Barbara; Hadassa Goldvicht of Jerusalem; Mary Heebner of Santa Barbara; Father Bill Moore of Glendale, California; Linda Saccoccio of Santa Barbara; Susan Savage of Santa Barbara; Marie Schoeff of Santa Barbara; Duncan Simcoe of Riverside, California; and Michael Tracy of Houston. Savage, who has taught at Westmont since 1991, will retire at the end of the year. She earned bachelors and masters degrees at UC Santa Barbara, and has taught at La Colina Junior High School and Santa Barbara City College. All of our shows this year have a spiritual theme, and Savages work is a wonderful way to begin that exploration through what spirituality is, says Judy L. Larson, director of the museum. Removed from common use, the domestic objects represented in Susans paintings are transformed into symbols of openness, reflection and divine interaction. Aldrich, originally from Texas, earned a bachelors degree at the University of North Carolina and an MFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She says she makes art that communicates authentic transcendence. Astore, a media artist, received his Master of Arts with distinction from the University of New South Wales. He will exhibit The Threshold, which was a joint winner of the Blake Prize, given to artists whose work addresses religion and spirituality. Belt, who earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of San Diego and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University, enjoys using experimental forms of art, creating mystifying objects that remind us we are small pieces of a large and active environment. Butler, who earned an MFA from CSU Fullerton and teaches at Azusa Pacific University, has produced numerous videos and video installations. He often uses his own body as the focus of his videos, defining what it means to be human and possess a soul. Ekstrom, who earned a Bachelor of Arts and MFA from UC Santa Barbara where she lectures, uses altered Bibles to create sculptures. She reassembles

pages of Bibles that have been shredded, sliced, twined, twisted and balled to express different ways of interpreting sacred texts. Goldvicht earned a Bachelor of Arts in printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She also attended the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Her video art creates and modifies rituals that make connections between the spiritual and physical. Heebner, who graduated from the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara where she also pursued her MFA, is a trained painter and distinguished author. Viewers will encounter Heebners creations layer by layer, slowly discovering the depth of her artistic imagination. Rev. Moore, a Roman Catholic priest who serves at the Ministry of the Arts in San Dimas, California, says his art has made him a better priest, and his faith a better artist. He earned a Bachelor of Arts at Saint Marys University before pursuing a masters degree in theology at the Washington Theological Coalition. His artistic style is rooted in abstract expressionism. Saccoccio, whose artwork is influenced by Eastern religions and yoga rituals, graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and earned an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She paints planes of bright colors often structured as broad stripes to form the backdrop for a mystical handwriting that seems to float above her abstract geometric paintings. Schoeff, who has taught for many years at Santa Barbara City College and Westmont, graduated from CSU Sacramento and earned an MFA at Hunter College. She refers to her drawings as intensely private and personal traces. She says the very act of drawing is physically and mentally transformative. Simcoe, who chairs the art department at California Baptist University, will exhibit his figural Black Drawings, which explore the biblical narrative of Abraham and his sons, a point of both unity and controversy among Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Tracy, whose work emerges in response to his Catholic upbringing, creates Stations of the Cross that are deeply physical. Tearing, puncturing and cutting, Tracy builds up textural, almost grotesque, surfaces. His monochromatic paintings seem to reflect Christs physical torment. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm and 11 am to 5 pm on Saturdays. It is closed Sundays and college holidays. Art From Scraps Jill Cloutier, Cay Sanchez and Mary Price working on the annual fundraiser, One Night Stand. Mary is holding Yoko Onos art submission via Fedex, while Cay is displaying a Tibetan Thangka donated for the silent auction and Jill is holding the blank 9x9 board sent to participating artists.

n Saturday, August 24, Art From Scrap (AFS) is holding its 3rd Annual One Night Stand Art Event, a unique approach to art for both the artist and buyer, as the artists name on the required 9x9 sized piece is hidden until the buyer makes the purchase, and each piece exhibited for sale is $200. I contacted Jill Cloutier at AFS after noting that Yoko Ono posted the event on her Facebook page, giving her support to our towns art community. Yoko, the first artist to make a piece for the events initial opening in 2011, is lending her art again this year. I met with Jill, AFSs Mary Price, and Cay Sanchez, Executive Director of Explore Ecology (an environmental education and creative art discovery organization that evolved out of Art from Scrap), last week, and the interview revealed the interesting behindthe-scenes story of how artists from around the globe are selected for the One Night Stand event. Mary shared that she volunteered for the first AFS One Night Stand in 2011. She made a wish list of artists that would be her dream to have make a piece for the fundraiser. Her list included local luminaries like Jeff Bridges, Thomas Van Stein, Dug Uyesaka and Dan Levin, and then she thought, hey what about asking Yoko Ono? Mary sent her an email and to everyones happy surprise, Yoko was the first artist to send in a piece, an inspiring feat considering Yokos privacy and full schedule. While jotting all this down on my reporters pad, the FedEx deliveryman came bounding upstairs to us with Yokos artwork for

the event. We all laughed and decided to have Mary hold the FedEx box in the photograph for this report. Mary added that from an artists perspective, not having his or her name on the piece causes the artist to think, How can I produce a piece of art that is compelling and will attract an audience, while the buyer is free to go with his or her gut instincts and buy what they want? The list of 180 artists participating in One Night Stand on Saturday include Yoko Ono, Jeff Bridges, Kent Twitchell, Michael McMillen, John Nava, Phoebe Brunner, Thomas Van Stein, V.C. Johnson, Dan Levin, and Mark Robert Halper. A thank you goes out to Professor of Art and former Director of Westmonts Reynolds Gallery, Tony Askew, for installing the 180 works. One Night Stand is our major fundraiser and is a wonderful way for people to support our Art From Scrap program, said Cay, adding, Besides offering art from one hundred and eighty artists, we have wonderful food, refreshments and a Silent Auction. A new addition this year is that Sidewalk Affair an R&B band will be playing in the parking lot party starting at 5:30 pm. One Night Stand takes place on Saturday, August 24 at the Brooks Institute Gallery 27 (located at 27 East Cota Street) from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. Tickets are available online at www.onenightstandafs.com, at the door, or by calling 805-884-0459 x17. General entry is $35 before the event, $40 at the door. Preview Early Entry 6:30 pm $125 before event/$150 at the door. MJ

anticipation of their official kickoff match against the New York Giants on September 8, the NFLs 94th season. The bus is truly fantastic! says Bob. Replete with at least four flat screen TVs, seating sixteen to twenty people comfortably and the ability to literally expand the interior while stopped by having the walls move out and then back in for going on the road. The tony octet caught the Cowboys last practice of the day. Jerry is very optimistic this year, with exceptionally high hopes for Dez Bryant, his star receiver, who we watched making some spectacular catches at practice, adds Bob. After the exertions of the day, the group, including Jerry and his wife, Gene, headed to Luckys to toast the teams success for the forthcoming season. Go Cowboys! Defiant Daughters Writer Carolyn Mullin, founder and executive director of the National Museum of Animals & Society in Los Angeles, has added her voice to Defiant Daughters, an anthology involving 21 women writing on art, activism and animals. I actually wrote the piece, Eat Rice, a couple of years back based

on a line from a poem, Carolyn explained at a bijou launch bash at Tecolote, the bustling bibliophile bastion in the Upper Village. In developing countries men eat the protein, while rice keeps women sustained. The contributors to the anthology all credit Carol Adams book, The Sexual Politics of Meat, published 23 years ago, with awakening their identities as feminist activists. It certainly worked for me, adds Carolyn, whose next work is Latina Vegan about expressing identity... Mighty Fine Vine More than 40 wineries and eateries displayed their wares at the 12th annual Taste of the Vine fundraiser for the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute at the exquisitely located QAD headquarters in Summerland, when more than 400 guests raised around $100,000 for the cause. How could you possibly do better than this? says former past president Ellen Goodstein, savoring the perfect weather and the glorious vistas from the bluffs. The bash, chaired by Wayne Hewitt and emceed by ubiquitous KEYT reporter John Palminteri, featured Geoff Green as auctioneer selling an assortment of trips, including

Zululand in South Africa, Tuscany, Costa Rica, Alaska and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Among the tony throng were film festival director Roger Durling, David Borgatello, Lad Handelman, Chris Lancashire, Lynn Kirst, Nikki Edwards and Julia Delgado... Haute Bods A load of leggy lovelies strutted their stuff at a decidedly glamorous Hautebox III fashion fete at the Santa Barbara aerie of real estate investor Barry Semler. The oh-so-chic events are held every six months to raise monies for nonprofits, with this weekends boffo bash, which attracted a positive tsunami of 200 tony trendy types, garnering around $10,000 for Youth Interactive, a Funk Zone-based organization that empowers youth with the spirit of entrepreneurship, offering mentorship and guidance to young aspiring entrepreneurs. Derren Ohanian, owner of DNA Imagery, a local company that deals with digital imagery and graphic design, launched the Hautebox events last year. They seem to have caught on,

with numbers growing steadily, says Derren. But were still in the embryonic stages and this event is certainly our biggest so far. We want to bring a certain vibe, quality and attitude to each party we throw. The achingly fashionable bash, which featured photographers, models, stylists, make-up artists and fabulous fashionistas, promoted styles from Los Angeles and New York based designer Lotta Stenssons summer collection paired with extravagant jewelry from Montecitos Ciao Bella and itsy-bitsy Brazilian bikinis from Coral Biquinis & Liquido. Walter Claudio was resident crimper, while Veronica Ramos applied the maquillage... Table of Life Building on the success of the first ever gala fundraiser in the Foodbank of Santa Barbara Countys 30-year history, the organizers are hosting their second Table of Life lunch at the former Fleischmann estate, now the home of the Lambert Road 12-acre campus of the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Summerland. North by Northwest Two longestablished theater groups out west (Circle Bar B Dinner Theater) and then up north (PCPAs Theaterfest in Solvang) have taken entirely different paths for their midsummer entertainment. The folks at the ranch are presenting The Fox on the Fairway, a very recent work by prolific playwright Ken Ludwig that skewers the country club set (sorry, Montecito) with some over-the-top shenanigans and overall zaniness, while PCPA goes classic with a fine production of Cyrano de Bergerac starring the great Shakespearean actor Derrick Weeden as the pugnacious, incurably romantic word- and sword-smith. Uproarious laughter in a converted barn or endless romance and loquaciousness under the stars your choice. Fermentation Festival You thought if you left stuff sit in your refrigerator too long it just spoils, and heres an entire festival dedicated to the process. Just kidding, of course. The probiotic properties of fermented foods are no longer a well-kept secret these days, at least around our enlightened area. In fact, todays daylong event is the third annual festival, which showcases local and regional experts on the history, benefits and how-tos of fermented foods. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn, taste and experience the art of making ferments and the ins-and-outs of how to take home and apply the newfound knowledge. Festival highlights include well-known fermentation experts Donna Gates, author of the Body Ecology Diet (which your intrepid writer employed to sooth a savaged gut); Jenny McGruther, author of the traditional foods blog Nourished Kitchen; Mark McAfee, owner of Organic Pastures Raw Dairy; Hannah Crum, the

Surrender to Jonathan Its almost unfathomable to note that Jonathan Richman turned 62, considering that he was not only one of the godfathers of punk with his Boston-based band The Modern Lovers, but has also maintained a childlike sense of wonder and apparent naivet through a series of ups and downs and sidesteps in a 40-plus year career. One of the most innocent sounding singer-songwriters is somehow simultaneously among the most knowing and even prescient. Richmans catalogue of marvelously melodic pop and folk-rock rivals many of his better known peers, while his penchant actually insistence for playing so quietly that he might as well eschew amplification altogether deserves inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (or some other less hallowed institution) for forcing attentiveness... and saving hearing. Richman played several gigs in town back about 10 years ago, but hasnt been here for a while. Its just a darn shame we have to choose between his plaintive appeal and the Stax stars peopling the Memphis Music Fest (see On Entertainment for details) across the street at the Granada at the same time. Local and regional food, beverage and fermentation supply vendors will be on hand to answer questions, offer samples and sell their products. A locavore lunch will be provided by SOL Food Kitchen, Nimitas Cuisine and Sugar & Salt Creamery. The Honey Sticks, Jabberwocky Foods Pirates, Patti the Pickle and local Santa Barbara musicians will provide entertainment throughout the day. And a cultured petting zoo will provide both children and adults a chance to touch and learn about fermentation starters. While there was no admission charge the first two years, the huge increase in attendance last year warranted a small fee to cover expense; proceeds benefit the Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens, the nonprofit educational farm. The benefit with the quirky suggestive name is a very unusual event indeed: All of the works of art are newly-created pieces that are 9 x 9 but none of them are identified or labeled. Only after each piece is sold is the artists name revealed, leading to all sorts of fun, surprise and speculation. Frequent arts patrons and first time collectors, as well as several of the artists themselves, are always among the guests. In addition to the little gems created by more than 150 different artists, the events also boast food, refreshments and a silent auction, plus new this year live music by Sidewalk Affair, an R&B band that will be playing in the parking lot/party area at starting at 5:30pm as guests wait for the doors to open. Indeed, this might be the only one night stand youll ever have that will leave you feeling great tomorrow morning knowing that your generosity has helped to support environmental education and the arts and Art From Scrap will respect you even more in the morning. Hitchcock al fresco Wanna hear something really scary? Santa Barbaras free summer film series is almost over. Alfred Hitchcock Nights: Eight Classic Films of Obsession, Mystery and Suspense has included screenings of some of the famed directors iconic films, with the downtown screenings taking place outdoors under the night sky at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Gardens on Fridays (while for the more timid, the films also show indoors every Wednesday at UCSBs Campbell Hall). But its coming to a close this week with the Master of Suspenses masterful Strangers on a Train, in which a tennis pro takes up a wealthy businessmans proposed diabolical offer to exchange murders so that they wont be caught. Meet your diabolical partners early for some tailgate-style picnicking (yes, alcohol is actually legal here) before the screening starts at 8:30 Friday night. Clegg, sans clan Trinity Backstage has already announced that after just over a decade promoting monthly acoustic music concerts in the coffeehouse-setting at the downtown church, the series will scale back to quarterly events. But first, one of the co-founders has his annual gig at Trinity, as 33-year veteran singer-songwriter Doug Clegg hits the stage, this time officially on his own, rather than in the round. Clegg who plays several guitars as well as piano, fiddle, accordion, mandolin and flute is a well-traveled folkie, born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, cut his teeth in a two-decade period all over New England, and has made Santa Barbara his home ever since, recording half a dozen albums along the way. Dish it out Sean Dishmans debut recording, which is being released digitally via Bandcamp today, is titled Coming Home, which is a pretty apt moniker for the first recording from the Santa Barbara native who is back for the summer from his studies at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. The 20-year-old singersongwriter grew up listening to 70s rock (Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles) and learned as a child to play guitar, sax, banjo and mandolin. Out in Boston, he was accepted into a special songwriting seminar with Cape Cod-based Patty Larkin, which might have spurred his creative output resulting in the new album. Dishman plays songs from the album in concert tonight at the only nightclub in town to regularly host major traveling musicians, a gig that should help bring him additional attention. him this story that my brother-in-law was always frightened, and he said, Whoa, that sounds good. Thunder and lightning the way she loves me is frightning. I better knock on wood. We put a demo down with the MGs the next day. It was supposed to be for Otis Redding. But it didnt seem like the rhythm wouldve worked for him, but maybe for me. And thats what we put out. But eventually Otis did a cover of it and I cant begin to tell you how many different artists have recorded it. Did you know right away it was a hit? Did it stand out? Yeah, most of the time we wrote those songs we did feel it. And the guys would all contribute to the songs in the studio and wed know we had something. Most times we never did a song over twice we just laid down the tracks and got the rhythm and that was it. I remember Booker T. and me one night in the studio coming up with something and it was great so we woke up Al Jackson at three in the morning, he was just fifteen minutes away and he came in and we laid it down. Then we were back in the studio around ten in the morning with the rest of the band recording the final version. Were coming up on 50th anniversary of Knock on Wood in a couple of years. How does it feel? Oh God, we are? I never even thought about it. Thats great. I hope Im here to celebrate. Lets backtrack: you were one of the very few musicians who were connected to both Motown and Stax Detroit and Memphis. As part of the Falcons you presaged the Temptations and Four Tops, recording Youre So Fine and I Found a Love with Wilson Pickett before moving on to Stax. What were the differences between the two environments? You know, we didnt try to mix or imitate the sounds. We werent competing. It was more about the song rather than the sound, although thats what eventually happened. But I did bring over some of the same recording techniques the way things worked in the studios. Just about all the artists and writers at Stax did the same thing go write a song with one instrument and the chord changes and let the rest of the band put their input into it. I was in Detroit before Stax, right when Motown started and it was basically the same thing. Just get in the studio and let everybody do their thing. Everybody would contribute to the song. We were like family, all working on each others songs. In Knock on Wood the bridge was Isaac Hayes who came with that part, and Al Johnson came up with putting the break in the song, knocking on the floor. Thats just how we would do it. 22 29 August 2013

Shannon Saleh stars in Mitties Song at the Plaza Theater in Carpinteria

Jimmie Ray and Cyndi Cantrell perform a Johnny Cash tribute at SOhO on Thursday, August 22

36 MONTECITO JOURNAL

Mitties Song, which has its world premiere at the Plaza Playhouse Theater in Carpinteria this weekend, took only a few years to fashion into a play, but has been a long time coming. About as long, in fact, as the 30 years it took the plays author, singersongwriter Jimmie Ray Cantrell, to find his birth father, a saga that is one of the impetuses for the story. Mitties Song is about Cantrells mother, Mittie Claire Belle Cantrell, who grew up in the shadow of the Great Smokey Mountains and had a difficult adolescence and early adulthood that led her to come to Los Angeles in the mid-1950s, married to a man who was not Jimmie Rays father, a fact he found out only when his parents had a terribly violent argument when he was 11. Cantrell found his birth dad at the age of 44, but he was in his grave, and that experience spurred Cantrell a singer-songwriter who had dabbled in several country-rock bands along the way to write a song about his dad, and eventually many more songs and a lot of words about his mom. Inspired by movies like Tender Mercies and Places in the Heart, Cantrell said at first he wrote a screenplay. Seeing what my mom and myself had gone through, the heartrending story, I thought it would be a great story to tell on film, he recalled. I pitched it a few times, almost sold it, and produced a little bit of footage, back in 1991. But it was just sitting around, so I used the screenplay as an outline and wrote a novel. That was picked up by a small pri-

Music to Their Ears

vate publisher on the East Coast, but the tiny run never went anywhere, Cantrell said. I never got much past a small book signing tour at Borders. By 2006, Cantrell and his wife, Cyndi, had started doing a Johnny Cash tribute show, which quickly earned the couple bookings all around the West Coast, playing in arts centers, casino show rooms, theaters, and fairs. Later that year, Asa Olsson, who later became the new Plaza Playhouse Theaters Artistic Director (where the Johnny Cash show first played in the area), read the novel, and encouraged Cantrell to turn it into a play. Now Olsson, who adapted the play with Cantrell, is directing the new theatrical version, which stars Shannon Saleh as Mittie, with Jimmie Ray and Cyndi performing more than a dozen songs written by Cantrell. My mom loved music, and we sang together and shes been my inspiration my whole life, he explained. Originally I wrote twenty songs for the screenplay. The main character, unlike my mom, ends up being a country star. At the end of many chapters she writes a song to sum up that period of her life. The play has thirteen of those original songs, which my wife and I and another musician will perform off to the side to segue the scenes. Cantrell said he hopes Mitties Song will inspire others to have the courage to pursue their dreams in the face of hard circumstances. There are a lot of people out there with the same story... Knowing where I came from was very interesting and helpful to me, so I want others to hear it. Meanwhile, Jimmie Ray and Cyndi will also perform the Johnny Cash tribute at SOhO on Thursday, the night before Mitties Song opens in Carpinteria. I give Johnny Cash credit to inspire me to sing when I was young, Cantrell said. He was the father image I never had, the big brother I always wanted.

Mitties Song plays at the Plaza Theater at 7pm Friday and Saturday, August 23 and 24, and 2pm Sunday, August 25. All shows will be preceded by a half-hour musical preview. Tickets cost $15 general, $12 seniors and students. Visit www. plazatheatercarpinteria.com or www.mit tiessong.com for more information.

Back With Stax

Eddie Floyd has only one big hit as a solo artist, but its a mighty one indeed. Knock on Wood, which Floyd co-wrote and recorded as a demo for Otis Redding, was a smash hit in 1966 and has lived on via cover versions from more than 100 other artists, including Amii Stewart, who made it a disco hit in 1979, as well as everyone from David Bowie to Eric Clapton to jazz great Count Basie. Floyd did make some noise with I Never Found a Girl (To Love Me Like You Do) and Raise Your Hand, the latter also used by Bruce Springsteen to close a lot of concerts from the 1970s through the 2000s. And he was also one of the Stax Records most versatile writers, as a slew of Stax artists recorded his songs, including Sam & Dave (You Dont Know What You Mean to Me), Rufus Thomas (The Breakdown), Redding (I Love You More Than Words Can Say), and Johnnie Taylor (Just the One (Ive Been Looking For). Floyd who joins fellow Stax veterans Booker T. Jones (profiled in these pages last week), The Bar-Kays, William Bell, and Jean Knight onstage at the Granada for Friday nights Memphis Music Fest talked about Wood and more over the telephone last week. Q. Ive got to start with Knock on Wood. How did you come to write that song with Steve Cropper? What was the impetus for the lyrics and the knocking sound? A. Steve came up with the title. We were down in Memphis and it was thundering and lightning. I told

did the show. They loved all of our songs, so it didnt feel like anything was wrong. We had a lot in common.

Masked Fund Raisers

Eddie Floyd joins other Stax artists on stage at the Granada as part of the Memphis Music Fest on Friday, August 23

Its different now. You cant get that sound anymore with the way things are done on computers in studios. I want to ask you about the Blues Brothers. When they started doing those classic songs, you joined in right away, going on tour with them. I guess it felt more like tribute than exploitation? I did it for about twenty-one years! Cropper recruited me as a special guest singer after they first got together and I stuck with them all the way. It was a great experience, almost like still being at Stax. Id sing Soul Man and Knock on Wood and a couple of others. Most people dont realize how much they meant it. They wanted to be musicians before they became comedians, so they werent jiving when they

The Silver Screen Celebration the Santa Barbara International Film Festivals annual summer wine and dine party to raise funds for its free childrens education and community outreach programs (which include Mikes Field Trip to the Movies, AppleBox Family Films, 10-10-10 Student Screenwriting & Filmmaking Competitions, 3rd Weekend screenings, and SBIFF College Internships) has a new twist this year besides removing bash from its title and moving back to town after two years at QAD in Carpinteria. The event is being combined with SBIFFs annual silent screen classic at the Arlington, and takes place 5:30-10pm Sunday, August 25, immediately following a screening of The Mark of Zorro, Douglas Fairbanks swashbuckling adventure, at 4pm at the historic Arlington Theatre. Gone is the whole concept of Hollywood in Santa Barbara with paparazzi taking photos of attendees as they walk the red carpet. Instead guests are encouraged to come in costume or masks to enjoy the goings-on at the Historical Museum just a few blocks away. As always, there will be lots of food provided by some of Santa Barbaras finest restaurants and caterers, plus local wine, beer, and mixed cocktails.

A DJ will be on hand to provide lots of throbbing beats to dance the night away, so perhaps leave the swords and sabers off the costumes. Tickets for the film and masquerade are $85 and include all food, wine, beer, and cocktails. Or you can skip the party and enjoy just the movie, complete with live pipe organ accompaniment by Adam Aceto for just $5. Details at 963-0023 or visit www.sbiff.org. In other SBIFF news, Sunstone Winery is crafting a wine to be exclusively featured at select events at the 2014 festival as part of its major sponsorship. Cuve Lumiere is a Bordeaux blend grown in the Santa Ynez Valley named after the Lumiere Brothers, inventors and manufacturers of an early motion picture camera and creators of the first motion picture. The specially designed label features an image of the very first movie camera and has also incorporated the SBIFF. And so it begins...

Red Obsession which is slated for theatrical release on September 6 after playing festivals from Berlin to Tribeca for a special screening and wine tasting from members of the Santa Barbara County Vintners Association including Foley, Demetria, Casa Dumetz, Coquelicot Estate, and many more, plus chef tastings by the Bacara. The 5pm screening in the resorts private 211-seat screening room featuring digital cinema technology and a surround-sound audio system will be followed by a Q&A session with director Warrick Ross live via Skype from Australia. Tickets are $45 and must be purchased in advance.

Blue Horizons

Obsessed with Red

Speaking of Bordeaux, Russell Crowe narrates the new wine documentary Red Obsession, which tracks the history of Bordeaux and its place as a bellwether of wine fortunes, focusing on new demand coming from China, which has pushed prices to stratospheric levels. The film examines whether the China market will be the bubble that never bursts or the biggest threat yet to Bordeauxs centuries old reputation. On Saturday evening, August 24, Bacara Resort & Spa hosts

The 2013 Blue Horizons Student Films presentation takes place at 7pm Friday at UCSBs Pollock Theater on campus. The short documentaries are the culmination of a nine-week summer program bringing together students interested in digital media production and environmental studies to create the films covering important issues of the global ocean from a local California perspective. The Carsey-Wolf Center based at the Pollock has also announced the first two events in its fall Script-toScreen series: Aline Brosh McKenna will talk about her script for The Devil Wears Prada on October 17, followed by Santa Barbara resident Paul Brickman, the writer-director behind the influential early Tom Cruise movie Risky Business, on November 14.
