CENTUM, STARDOM NCS

Description DCS Business

Yokogawas CENTUM system has always been at the core of the companys DCS business. The latest version of CENTUM is Over its 35 year history, CENTUM VP, which is the eighth generation since the introduction of the first CENTUM system in 1975. CENTUMs key concepts of high process control availability, high system performance, and backward compatibility with previous CENTUM versions have all been maintained. CENTUM VP consists of a high performance Windows-based HMI, high availability process controller, and the highly reliable Vnet/IP real-time control network. The HMI incorporates a universal color scheme that greatly reduces the chance of an operator misinterpreting information due to color blindness and increases the overall visibility of the most important information to the end user. Yokogawa did a lot of research into this HMI to increase productivity and decrease the likelihood of operation errors. Yokogawa states

that the new HMI more than doubles the speed of operational decision making.

It supports a variety of field device communications protocols, such as FOUNDATION fieldbus and PROFIBUS, as well as field wireless networks based on the ISA 100 international PRM standard, which can be accessed using Yokogawas plant asset management (PAM) software.

Vnet/IP is a fully redundant 1 Gigabit Ethernet control network that allows the real-time exchange of large amounts of data. Other products in the CENTUM VP family include an advanced process control station (APCS) and SMOC advanced process control software, which was developed through Yokogawas alliance with Shell Global Solutions and is embedded in the CENTUM VP control architecture. CENTUM VP Release 5 (R5) This is a major enhancement of the CENTUM VP system. The R5 system features a new high performance process controller. The performance of the new process controller has four times higher performance and twice the capacity for applications. Remote I/O configuration over a high-speed optical network (ESB bus) is now also supported. A unified gateway station (UGS) for integration of STARDOM controllers and subsystems, such as PLCs, is also available. This software can run on a PC and supports a variety of communication protocols, including OPC and EtherNet/IP. CENTUM VP R5 provides full backward compatibility with previous CENTUM VP releases and earlier generations in the CENTUM series, and also maintains upward compatibility for users of other CENTUM systems who wish to upgrade to CENTUM VP R5. The CENTUM VP R5 HMI runs under Microsofts latest operating system, Windows 7, ensuring that users have long-term support for their system environment. Yokogawa STARDOM Network-based Control Systems and FAST/TOOLS SCADA Yokogawa supplies supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) solutions that incorporate leading-edge IT and demonstrate high reliability while satisfying the requirements of distributed applications for connectivity with a variety of devices, communication with low-bandwidth network infrastructure, and autonomous capabilities. Based on the FAST/TOOLS SCADA software and STARDOM Network-based Control System (NCS) controllers, Yokogawa presents SCADA solutions for a wide range of applications.

The FAST/TOOLS web-based SCADA incorporates more than 30 years of innovation in the oil & gas, petrochemical, and power industries, and is relied on by innovative industrial automation users worldwide. FAST/TOOLS is not limited to stand-alone stations, has a true client/server architecture, and allows distributed functionality. FAST/TOOLS is scalable from less than a hundred to more than a million I/O points, and supports multiple architectures from single node solutions to multi-node client/server systems. To handle huge volumes of data with high performance, front-end nodes reduce the load on the host by preprocessing data at remote locations and passing through only what is relevant. This is platform-independent process management software that supports industry-standard operating systems, including Windows, IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, and Linux. TCP/IP network communications are also supported, providing access to a wide variety of distributed systems over LAN, WAN, or GPRS. engineering and maintenance, and allows the deployment and real-time management of process applications via secure webbased services.

STARDOM Network-based Control System

The STARDOM NCS product lineup includes modular controllers, dual redundant configurable FCN autonomous controllers, FCNRTU low power and wide temperature range autonomous controllers, and the all-in-one compact FCJ controllers. Inheriting many of the features of their DCS hardware, all of them have fault

With the above described features, STARDOM controllers provide a platform for a wide range of To make full use of the controllers capabilities, a versatile engineering tool is provided that supports the five IEC61131-3 programming languages, field-proven application portfolios (APPF) for regulatory control, communications libraries, and AGA flow calculations for improved efficiency and reliability. In addition to their control capabilities, STARDOM controllers leverage various information technologies such as Java applications that log and process data in the controller memory while controlling utilities. This data can be monitored from a Web browser, and all data and alarms can be e-mailed using embedded Web server and e-mail client functions. The control and IT capabilities of this rugged hardware satisfy application needs for flexibility, expandability, and reusability, and contributes to the reduction of CAPEX. STARDOMs Positioning in Relation to a DCS STARDOM systems merit consideration in applications where infrastructure limitations, installation requirements, or utility requirements have made it necessary to expand the capabilities of a DCS through the introduction of a PLC and HMI package. However, a PLC and DCS do not have the tight integration that allows them to handle data and alarms in the same manner with DCS. When STARDOMs FCN/FCJ controllers are used in combination with a DCS, utilities can be controlled and monitored with an integrated look & feel, and all alarms can be consolidated on the DCS HMI. These capabilities make STARDOM well suited for applications where utilities are in inhospitable locations that may be subject to extreme temperatures, or be off the power grid.

STARDOM controllers have a versatile range of IT capabilities that, for example, enable them to log data that can be monitored via a Web browser and to autonomously send alarms to mobile devices. The STARDOM NCS fully realizes the Yokogawa concept of Production Excellence for collaborative manufacturing. Vigilance Campaign Yokogawa has come a long way in making its message clear to the world of process automation. Several years ago, the company embarked on a full-scale global marketing campaign to make customers aware of Yokogawas focus on system reliability, security, dependability, and robustness. Dubbed Vigilance, the campaign created a unified message for the company and greatly helped expand awareness of the Yokogawa brand and corporate philosophy. Vigilance is successfully increasing brand awareness and communicating Yokogawas message of reliability and quality to the worldwide market, particularly outside of Japan. While the Vigilance campaign successfully expresses the

companys philosophy, articulating the value proposition of the companys product, application, and services offering remains a key challenge for the company. Yokogawa, for example, has long been known for its control systems, field instrumentation, and fieldbus capabilities. Many customers, however, remain unaware of Yokogawas capabilities in production management, safety systems, alarm management, PAM, and many other areas. Yokogawas ongoing VigilantPlant campaign is designed to raise customer awareness of Yokogawas solution set and where it fits in the Vigilance scheme. The VigilantPlant philosophy eliminates unplanned downtime and allows businesses to adapt and change quickly and with agility, to shifting market conditions and customer demands. This is consistent with ARCs view that giving personnel access to the right information at the right time combined with the ability to take action is crucial for achieving OpX, and is the foundation of real-time performance management (RPM).

Strengths and Challenges

Strengths: for decades.

One of Yokogawas strengths comes from its The company maintains a leading position in the

reputation as being committed to the industries that it has served Japan market, and more recently, the company has shown good growth in other parts of the world. Another key strength comes from its decades of service to the most demanding of process industries, such as chemicals and oil refining. The breadth of its product offering is designed to serve these industries well. Challenges: The home base market for Yokogawa, although still fairly large, has not experienced the growth that other regions has enjoyed. This has challenged Yokogawa to expand beyond the comfort of Japan. It has done this very well in recent years and had established itself as a leading supplier in many of the growth regions.
