Overview

This course provides an introduc1on to the steps required to obtain and u1lize ocean sta1on data including the guiding principles of data management and major responsibili1es of a data manager. Target Audience Data Managers Graduates and undergraduates in ocean-related science elds who need to manage ocean sta1on data sets

Learning Objec4ves

Knowledge and understanding of the management of ocean sta1on data collec1ons, from ini1al assembly through typical management processes and methods Understanding of the core theore1cal and prac1cal concepts surrounding crea1on and maintenance of regional- or na1onal-scale ocean sta1on data resources Awareness of some principal formats used to store or manage ocean sta1on data Ability to use the Ocean Data View (ODV) soJware for the interac1ve analysis and visualiza1on of ocean sta1on data Understanding of the importance of metadata for describing and managing data Graduates of this course should be fully qualied to lead or play a major role in ocean sta1on data management ac1vi1es for governmental or non-governmental (i.e. research, survey) programs

Topics to be included:

Integra1on of Marine Data Resources Building a Regional Ocean Data Collec1on Commonly Created Analysis Products in ODV Export Marine Data or products from ODV Quality Control of marine Data Collec1ons using ODV Add Argo Data (from Coriolis) to an ODV Collec1on Add (Seabird) CTD data to an ODV Collec1on Introduc1on to Metadata for Marine Data Managers

Course Prerequisites:

Excellent computer skills with experience in the use of spreadsheets to manipulate data. Good command of the English language Notes: This course is not suited for applicants who are already familiar with ODV Par1cipants are encouraged to bring their own data for analysis in class.

A Cer4cate of Par4cipa4on will be issued to all successful students.
