he 36th Derby City
Charter 8eer IestivaI
has now passed and we
are starting to turn our
attention to the 37th in
2014. 8ut before we
cIose the door on this
great event Iet us have a
Iook at what reaIIy
happened between the
10th 1uIy and the 14th
1uIy 2013 in the Market
PIace, Derby.
At l8:30 as the fanfare
played, the Mayor of Derby,
Pareed Hussaln, together
wlth our own 8eer Klng
opened the festlval to the
general publlc and ln you
came. As the door totals
went past l000 we knew we
had somethlng speclal on
our hands. Of course the
marquee had been standlng
ln the Market Place for
nearly a week and wlth the
weather also gettlng lnto
the splrlt of thlngs we
should not have been
surprlsed. So records were
broken as you trled the
beers ln the marquee and
lnslde the Assembly Pooms.
The pace was kept up on
Thursday as entertalnment
was provlded by Padlo Mary,
The Herron 8rothers and the
8lack Plg 8order Morrls
troop. Desplte the
temperatures lnslde the
Assembly Pooms, the
brewery bars from
Mulrhouse, Pullers, 8lue
Monkey and Tltanlc took
some brlsk trade. Do not
worry, the refurblshment of
the Assembly Pooms wlll
lnclude new alr condltlonlng
Movlng lnto Prlday there
was no quenchlng your
thlrst as the contlnental beer
made thelr way through
2464 bottles (not all on
Prlday!). The contlnental
beer on tap also proved
popular wlth 2l0 lltres belng
consumed over the perlod
of the festlval - that ls
around 360 plnts ln old
money.
8y the end of Prlday's
entertalnment from Shamus
O'8llvlon, Peverb and the
Herron 8rothers, thlngs had
gone so well ln the marquee
that we started to call on our
reserves - ok we admlt, you
had all but drunk us dry. we
dld not need the
Thunderblrd qulte, but wlth
worklng untll 2am
restocklng beer and then
startlng agaln at 6am the
next mornlng, we opened
Saturday wlth a further 5600
plnts. Speclal thanks go to
Danclng Duck,
Leatherbrltches, 8ablngton
Arms, Mr Grundys, wentwell,
who were our Thunderblrds.
Saturday was a llttle calmer
but we stlll saw huge
numbers passlng through
our doors and en[oylng the
Lyed Pox and Plp |t Up took
you through the mldday
sesslon and on lnto the
afternoon, wlth 1olnt
Honours and the Legendary
Steamlng |zaacs and the
8ackllne 8lues 8and taklng
up the evenlng's
entertalnment. Lrm yes the
ooops!
wlth 8lues Town helplng us
all to wlnd down and
recount the 36th Derby Clty
Charter Summer 8eer
Pestlval and what a huge
success lt had been. The taps
pumps set to rest, the shlves
and keystones sealed and
slghed,. All ln all we had sold
336l3 plnts (glve or take a
few) of real ale over the four
days - agaln a new record. A
staggerlng l0,227 had
passed through our doors -
yes also a record. et
our volunteers saw the
whole festlval taken down
by wednesday. Now a
memory but we wlll be back
wlth the 37th ln 1uly 20l4.
And of course do not forget
the wlnter Pestlval ln 20l4
whlch wlll host the CAMPA
Natlonal wlnter Ales Pestlval.
Prom all ln Derby CAMPA
our greatest thanks go to all
who came and made thls a
record breaklng year.

ou may not be aware, but at tbe end

of a mlcro-pub ls a llttle unclear and lt
could be argued that the Lngllsh language
does not yet support the concept, but
some polnts are clear. Mlcro-pubs are small
uncompllcated terms and concentratlng
on servlng good cask ale and real clder. The
8utcher's Arms ln Herne, Kent ls attrlbuted
pub ln 8rltaln and many of the concepts of
what a mlcro-pub ls has come from there.
The phrase K|S-K|S "Keep |t Small - Keep |t
Slmple" ln some parts sums up the
concept, but lt ls the atmosphere that
makes mlcro-pubs so speclal for those of us
who frequent pubs.
Of course we are all aware of the orlgln of
the name 'pub' as a shortenlng of publlc
house, but ln modern tlmes we forget that
lt really was a house for the general publlc.
Thls was where people went to ln the
evenlngs (typlcally) to relax and soclallse
wlth thelr nelghbourhood. The modern
pubs wlth thelr large rooms, food avallable
all day, plped muslc and televlslon screens
llberally spaced around the place have lost
much of the orlglnal tradltlons of a publlc
house. whlle thls ls not a crltlclsm, slmply
progress, mlcro-pubs can be seen to be
house. A place to relax, and soclallse wlth
your nelghbours - a publlc front room lf
you llke.
8rewery Ale House opened ln 20l0 ln a
ln Marlpool near Heanor. ou can easlly
walk past the pub thlnklng lt ls stlll a
terrace house, but lt ls well worth seeklng
out, though lt does have very restrlcted
openlng hours. A small two
roomed establlshment, the bar ltself
appears to take up half the total space
domlnated by the Marlpool brewery, but
that ls no bad thlng.
the Llttle Chester Ale House, opened ln
Derby over-looklng Chester Green, an
ldylllc part of Derby a short dlstance from
the town centre. The corner premlses ln
part of a terrace, was formally a dry-
cleaners before belng converter to lts
present use. A long slngle room
punctuated by the bar to glve some "hlde-
aways", remlnlscent of the old snugs. The
pub ls connected to the wentwell brewery,
also of Derby. The cask condltloned ales
from wentwell are compllmented by a
varylng range of beers from across the
country.

that promotes relaxatlon and conversatlon.

what the doctor orders. So seek them out,

Sadly the Amber valley CAMPA

been forced to move. The success
of the festlval has meant that lt

Thls means that the festlval ls

Thls slte does not have the

irstIy, thanks to aII you cider and
perry drinkers who came to this
year's Derby Summer IestivaI,
braved the heat in the marquee and
drunk more cider and perry than
has ever before been consumed at a
singIe event in Derby! You drunk
some 4,400 pints from cider makers
situated throughout the country.
One of the main distinctions in cider
circIes is between 7raditionaI cider
/ perry, generaIIy made in the west
of the country form appIe and pear
purpose and therefore not good to
eat (they are generaIIy high in
tannin, making them taste bitter).
7his is contrasted with astern
Counties cider which is made from
cooking and eating appIes.
Some purlsts wlll tell you that the
only clder worth drlnklng ls of the
tradltlonal varlety and they have a
polnt, the very best clders and perrles
usually come from the tradltlonal
areas. Nevertheless, wlth [udlclous
blendlng of the avallable frult Lastern
Countles clders can be more than
acceptable. My own vlew ls that an
Lastern Countles perry, made from
eatlng pears [ust doesn't work, stlll,
thls ls not a problem slnce such pears
can go lnto the clder. Perhaps l0 -
l5% pears llghtens and softens the
clder, so all the avallable frult can be
put to good use.
The clder bar at Derby does sell a
preponderance of tradltlonal clders
but slnce Derby ls ln the Last
Mldlands ([ust) lt seems reasonable
clders too. Three Cats ls one such
clder slnce lt ls normally made from
very local frult. 8ecause of the
dlabollcal summer last year and
consequent lack of local frult, Cat was
boosted wlth some tradltlonal clder
frult from Herefordshlre. Thls resulted
ln a darker and, arguably a more full
bodled clder than usual, not qulte
what some customers expected, stlll,
lf we get a decent summer lt wlll be
back to normal next year.
A trawl through the Last of Lngland
took us to vlslt some fasclnatlng clder
makers. At 8radgate Park,
Lelcestershlre there ls Charnwood
Clder, made by Pob Clough. Pob ls a
Park Panger as well as a clder maker.
Hls clder ls dry, frulty and very
refreshlng. The operatlon ls small
scale so the outlets tend to be very
local, well worth a drlnk lf you come
across lt. Also ln Lelcestershlre, at
Cross Parm, Hallaton ls 8ottle Klcklng
Clder, made by Pob Morton. Thls ls a
very lmpresslve setup and Pob clearly
lntends to make an lmpresslon on the
clder scene. |t ls made from a mlxture
of local and clder frult. Clder and
Perry are made there, both were
well recelved at the Pestlval.
Purther away at Streatham,
run by Charles Poberts. Charles ralses
plgs and cattle as well as maklng
clder, an ldeal comblnatlon slnce the
pressed frult makes a hlghly
nutrltlous anlmal feed, and they love
eatlng lt! Porkers Snout, medlum
appears only occaslonally ln thls area
but wlll be avallable at Peterborough
8eer Pestlval ln October. Our travels
Norfolk. Thls appears to be an
unllkely outpost for clder maklng, but
extenslve orchards have been
planted and some good clder, both
eastern countles and tradltlonal ls
made there. Sampllng and takeaways
are avallable from Stearmans ard, ln
the centre of wells.
The next blg clder event ln Derby wlll
be at the Natlonal wlnter Ales
Pestlval, held at the Poundhouse
from l9th to 24th Pebruary 20l4.
However, you needn't walt that long,
Amber valley are holdlng a 8eer &
Clder festlval at the Lelsure centre,
Alfreton from l2th to l5th
September, and of course at the
Nottlngham Pestlval ln October there
ls a masslve clder bar. Also ln October
pubs ln Amber valley and Lrewash
8ranch areas wlll be partlclpatlng ln a
clder trall, watch out for detalls.

7be YeaveIey Arms, YeaveIey - a correction,
There was a factual error concernlng the status
of thls pub ln the last edltlon, for whlch we
wlsh to make a slncere apology to the
management of the eaveley Arms. we are
happy to report that the pub ls open and
tradlng and we would encourage readers to
contlnue to go there. Openlng hours are varled,
so you may wlsh to call ahead to determlne the
best tlme to vlslt and/or book a table for meals.
They can be contacted on 0l335 33077l.
we are sad to report that the Roston Inn,
Roston (known to all and sundry as The Shant)
closed lts doors ln 1une. There seems to be no
lmmedlate prospect of lt re-openlng, but we
wlll monltor actlvlty ln the hope that lt may be
resurrected. Thls part of our area ls now almost
completely devold of pubs, wlth the Crown at
Marston Montgomery belng the only survlvor
ln a large area between Ashbourne & Pocester.
Coacb & Horses,
Asbbourne contlnues feverlshly, wlth a
pro[ected openlng date of mld-August.
Creen Man,
Asbbourne have now been passed by the
Town Councll and phase l ls about to
commence wlth the removal of the current bar
areas to make way for a clothlng outlet. The
branch membershlp has been ln personal
contact wlth the owner and archltect, who are
both very wllllng to talk to us and an open
dlalogue ls belng malntalned wlth partlcular
regard to the plans for phase 2, whlch wlll
hopefully see a bar area lnstalled elsewhere
wlthln the complex.
7be owIing Creen, Asbbourne has recently
re-lnstated a thlrd beer llne and featured
Adnams 8ltter to start thelr programme of
guest ales, whlch ls llned up to lnclude beers
from wlncle 8rewery amongst others ln the
near future. A very welcome addltlon to the
beer cholce ln the town.
7be Ceorge & Dragon, Asbbourne featured a
guest ale from welbeck Abbey ln early 1uly,
brewed ln con[unctlon wlth Dukes Ales
wholesalers - Anouk Ale (4.0%) ls lnfused wlth
lavender and early reports are that lt ls ls
provlng very popular. 7be Smitb's 7avern,
Asbbourne has also taken the beer as a guest
ln recent weeks.
7be Miraj HoteI, Asbbourne has closed down
and wlth lt the Iack Sbeep ar - thls only ever
featured Marston's Pedlgree on draught, but ls
stlll a blow for the town due to the sudden lack
of bedrooms ln the town for vlstors. No solld
news on lts fate, but one rumour ls that lt wlll
be turned lnto a prlvate resldentlal nurslng
home.
7be Compton SociaI CIub, Asbbourne now
features a slngle guest real ale - Sharp's
Doombar was on recently. Thls ls a prlvate
sports & soclal club, but guests are welcome
once slgned ln.
The leasehold tenancy of the Horns,
Asbbourne remalns up for sale, as lt has been
for some tlme now. Thls ls a very old pub wlth a
lot of hlstory and some lnterestlng lnternal
features, so lt ls hoped that a buyer wlll be
found and a sympathetlc takeover wlll happen.
88808 8ll8 fl$1ll
Tentatlve plans are belng made for the next sub-
branch beer festlval, although lt ls llkely to move
ln 20l4 from March to August. Thls ls not
prlmarlly due to the fear of a repeat of the snow,
but largely due to the need to use a blgger
venue. |t ls hoped that we may be able to use an
lconlc locatlon wlthln the town sub[ect to
thls wlll be clrculated as soon as posslble.

SociaI Report
On Saturday 22nd 1une we had a trlp around
Draycott and 8reaston organlsed by our
Membershlp Secretary, Plchard Syson. A good
turnout started from the vlctorla then pulled ln
the Coach & Horses and Olymplc before golng
on ln the raln to 8reaston to do the Navlgatlon,
Chequers and 8ulls Head. All the pubs had a
good selectlon of hand pulled beers. we dld
lntend to carry on walklng the Derby Canal to
The 8rldge |nn, Sandlacre but never made lt
due to the lnclement weather, thanks to
Plchard for a good day out.
Another soclal was done on Saturday 20th 1uly
when l5 assorted Camra members went to the
Potterles. The orlglnal plan for thls trlp was to
go from Derby to Kldsgrove by rall lntendlng to
start at the 8lue 8ell then by bus to 8urslem
and Hanley. However due to Last Mldlands
tralns dolng thelr utmost to scupper the trlp by
termlnatlng the servlce at Uttoxeter statlon
due an englne fault and as the next traln wasn't
for an hour we declded to do the trlp ln
reverse. Unfortunately thls meant havlng to
mlss out The Holy |nadequate but we wlll pull
the traln at Stoke lt was a short bus trlp to
Hanley and The Coachmakers (see photo). Thls
pub ls a llttle gem and should be vlslted as lt ls
stlll under threat of closure, we were made very
welcome and had the last drlnk stralght from
the barrel wlth help from one of our group,
Gary (see photo). Then after dlscoverlng that
the 8lue 8ell closes at 4.00pm lt was a mad
dash on the No.20 bus to Kldsgrove. Thls ls
another Potterles classlc pub, nothlng ln thls
pub but good ale, clder and frlendly
conversatlon. we then headed for 8urslem, a
great town wlth a good cholce of real ale pubs
8rewery Tap before the short bus trlp to
Longport for the traln back to Derby. No
trlp wlth a last drlnk ln The Alex. Thanks must
go to Mlck for organlslng the trlp wlth Carole's
help and thanks to all those that came and we
had a few new faces too.
Pub News
The Creat Nortbern, LangIey MiII has now re-
opened, a few members attended the openlng
nlght after an lnvltatlon from Pub People Co.
brlght and frlendly wlth 6 hand pulled beers
and an excellent range of free food provlded, lt
was a shame that more people dld not attend,
all ln all a good nlght (see photo) Mlck, 1lm,

7be Navigation at reaston seems to be
havlng problems, a group has been formed
calllng themselves Prlends of the 8reaston Navl
and an lnaugural meetlng was held ln the pub
on Tuesday 23rd 1uly to form a commlttee. |t
seems to be the age old problem of
uncertalnty of the future of the pub, sorry we
do not have much lnformatlon at the tlme of
golng to press.

C
onsiderl Dear 7oper, tbe Iong and (bopefuIIy) sunny days of
summer, an exceIIent time of year to induIge in beer
tourism, tbat is to say, visiting otber towns and cities witb a
For tbe responsibIe toper tbis means using pubIic transport
and in a number of our major cities nowadays tbis can invoIve
tbe tram system (providing tbe pubs tbat tbey seek are on tbe
route) witbout incurring any of tbe crippIing (never to be
recovered) costs of setting it aII up.
Personally | see nothlng ln a tram system that cannot be achleved for a
tlny fractlon of the lnfrastructure cost, by a good bus servlce. One of the
problems (and there are many) wlth modern trams, ls that they often
run on one llnear route, that usually dlssects the host clty, the urban
of the dlsruptlon, chaos and headaches caused to everyone uslng the
clty centre durlng the
constructlon process, the
loss of trade to buslnesses,
and the huge cost lncurred
by local taxpayers, the only
people who derlve any use
from the route are those
who llve or work on or near
lt - and of course beer
tourlsts.
The slmple axlomatlc fact,
Dear Toper, ls that local
authorltles got rld of thelr
orlglnal trams many years
ago for one compelllng
reason, and that was
because they were CPAP
when compared to the new
And lt's the same today,
modern trams are llterally
"trammeled" dlnosaurs that
are unable to adapt to new road layouts wlthout ma[or reconstructlon
work belng undertaken. And as for clrcumnavlgatlng temporary road
closures caused by roadwork's etc. try dlvertlng a tram round the block!
Por that matter, try steerlng one around a drayman's lorry maklng a
dellvery!
The maln reason that trams are back on our clty streets, ls because they
are percelved to be a low carbon form of transport. The llttle green men
(and women - |'d hate to be thought of as belng polltlcally lncorrect) of
the envlronmentallst lobby (who lncreaslngly dlctate the warped
thlnklng of our splneless polltlcal class) no doubt belleve that the
electrlclty whlch powers modern trams ls totally derlved from those
useless and unslghtly wlnd farms that now bllght much of our once
lovely countryslde. And talklng of "unslghtly", [ust look at what those
modern tram routes have done to some of our hlstorlc clty centres.
splder's web suspended over the garlsh stalnless-steel and glass tram-
stop shelters, whereln huddled would-be passengers awalt the death-
knell-llke clang of the
approachlng tram. 8ut they walt
ln valn, Dear Toper, for lt has
broken down, and the one
behlnd can't overtake lt and
come to thelr ald, because lt's
trammeled!
Of course, besldes
envlronmentallsts, trams do
have other enthuslasts, who
travel hlther and thlther on
and for no other purpose than
to slmply be on them. They are
usually unmarrled males of
thelr mothers and have traln
sets ln thelr attlcs. And talklng of
folk wlth "traln sets ln thelr
attlcs", do the llttle green men
(and women) serlously belleve
that the electrlclty that powers
these modern day dlnosaurs ls solely derlved from those ludlcrously
expenslve renewable sources that are drlvlng many of our poorer
cltlzens lnto fuel poverty! The reallty ls, that trams are powered by
electrlclty generated, for the most part, from those "nasty" fossll fuels
that they so desplse!
Heaven help us lf some ldlot polltlclan decldes that, to save the planet,
beer dellvery vehlcles have to be electrlclty powered, lf the ale ever
arrlves at the pub at all, lt wlll cost about l0 a plnt! Conslder that, Dear
Toper! D.7.
