Lorde finally announced details of her debut album. Social networking sites went crazy when she posted the upcoming album cover. The much anticipated album, Pure Heroine, will be released in New Zealand Fri 30 Sep. Also announced last week was that iHeartRadio and Lorde will be joining forces for iHeartRadios first major concert. The Radio Networks digital radio service, iHeartRadio is presenting Lorde in a free Auckland concert at Vector Arena. CEO of The Radio Network, Jane Hastings, says the gig is specifically to celebrate the full launch of iHeartRadio in New Zealand. iHeartRadio will be available for free on mobile and web to all New Zealanders in September so what better way to celebrate the full launch than by providing an opportunity for several thousand of those people that have registered for iHeartRadio to see Lorde live and for free.
The concert will be the only chance New Zealanders will have to see Lorde in concert at home this year. SEE HER LIVE: LORDE SAT 07 SEP VECTOR ARENA, AUCKLAND REGISTER FOR TICKETS IHEARTRADIO.CO.NZ

Your house is on fire, what do save? Paintings, the rest we can replace. Favourite 90s TV show? Life Goes On. Dream job as a kid? I used to say that I wanted to be an entomologist, just because it was a bit odd coming from an 8 year old and I liked the reaction I got, but really I had no interest in insects. First album? Best of Billie Holiday on cassette. If you werent a musician, what would you be? A baker of bread. Ultimate festival line-up? Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Randy Newman, Nancy Wilson, David Gates, Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainwright, Lucinda Williams, Joan Baez, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Jacques Brel and Sondheim. Worst job youve had? Singing telegrams, or refiling an accounts system manually for a bank. Which song do you wish you wrote? Simple Twist of Fate by Bob Dylan. First gig in attendance? Supergroove. I was at high school but I snuck in with some older boys with my most mature outfit on, a tweed jacket of my mums! Any vices? Much has happened in the 18 months since the release of Great Norths debut album Newfoundland. Frontman and songwriter Hayden Donnell trumped them both by marrying his partner and bassist Rachel Donnell.

Jeff Buckley is right at the top of my list, but Im not sure who his back-up musicians would be. Whats an upcoming film youre jazzed about? Keen to see what Sir Peter has lined up for the second installment of The Hobbit - even though I still wish theyd just done it as a single movie... Where can your stalkers find you during the weekend? At a yoga class, or chilling at home. What happens when you mix Coca Cola with Pepsi? Ugh!! A major headache, Id say! Five celebs on your f**klist? Lets just say that if Idris Elba walked in the room, nobody else would stand a chance! Well, maybe George Clooney... Kittens or puppies? Kittens!! No question. A visionary icon of the Swinging Sixties, Andy Warhol has become a legend beyond his years. The exhibition features Warhols portraits of friends, celebrities, socialites, politicians, and rock stars across multiple media paintings, MTV videos, experimental films, screen prints, drawings, and magazine covers. Among them are the flamboyant, repetitive portraits that made him most famous. As he once said:, Isnt life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves? Startling self-portraits from a 40year period show the persona of Andy Warhol developing over time, until close to his death in 1987. He immortalised himself as much others on canvas if not elsewhere.

Sorry, Joss Whedon doing Shakespeare? What will be see? Overthe-top fights (likely), feisty heroines (definitely) and a strange/ unidentifiable plot twist (probably not). Alexis Denisof, better known as a star of Buffy and husband of How I Met Your Mothers Alyson Hannigan, stars as Benedick. With set ideas about love, he enters a war of words with the lady Beatrice. Its inevitable they will fall in love: Didnt your mother always tell you the boy that teases you just does it because he likes you? Oh yeah, and there is also a scheming plot to ruin an empire, young lovers and a sword fight or too. Its action-packed and whipped into a frenzy with Whedons contemporary spin on the classic.
Writer/director Neill Blomkamps 2009 feature debut District 9 received a lot of acclaim for being a sci-fi action thriller with strong political undercurrents. The initial word on his greatly anticipated follow-up Elysium has been that the sci-fi and action elements are present, but the metaphorical power is lacking. In this reviewers opinion, it wasnt the allegorical aspects that made District 9 sing, it was the fact that you cared about the characters. Thats all fan boys want in their crazyass movies to care. This aspect of Blomkamps filmmaking prowess is very present in Elysium. The allegorical aspects are also present building on observations about the 1% versus the rest of us and concerns about availability to health care. But Elysium works because Blomkamp makes sure you care about the protagonists and their fate its all too rare an achievement in genre cinema.
The kick-ass action and brain-tickling future tech doesnt hurt either there is no director working today who has a better grasp of sci-fi action, including James Cameron. Blomkamp is also unmatched in infusing his sci-fi settings with grit and wear the tagging and spray paint on everything here rings particularly true. The titular space habitat in Elysium of course lacks grit, but thats the point of the movie. I was dazzled by every shot of the spinning torus style space station, but I wouldve liked to have seen a little more of it. Elysium doesnt quite build on the dazzling potential of District 9, but it doesnt fail the previous film either. Blomkamp has crafted another superior sci-fi action thriller that demands emotional investment I felt every moment here, and I cant wait to do so again, over and over.

THE UNCONVENTIONAL SINGER RELIVES HER LAST MEMORIES OF NEW ZEALAND. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR It was terrifying, remembers singer/songwriter Amanda Palmer (aka AFP) about one fateful day in February 2011. On the phone from New Orleans, she notes, I was at the Napier airport, which is about the size of an outside toilet, with all the other passengers huddled around this big TV. Out on the tarmac the plane from Christchurch had just landed and the passengers were arriving in the terminal (oblivious) to the news a massive earthquake that had just rocked their hometown. It was heartbreaking. Ive just reminded her of that moment because Id found her bookmarked tweet when researching for this interview. At the time of those quakes, I was following Palmers last local solo tour adventures via Facebook and at the precise moment her comments were coming through my office was erupting with the news from down south. You heard it here first, huh? she says. I was actually tweeting in a car going away from the airport. My first reaction was to get on a plane, fly down and do some fundrasing shows. But everyone was like, No, dont do that, theres no infrastructure or anything. I couldnt play if Id wanted to not then. Had my flight had been an hour before I could have landed into .well... Armageddon? Yes. You know the internet is so fast. It really isnt just this big static thing. Its the new town crier! I did go back to Christchurch with The (Dresden) Dolls [the Brechtian punk cabaret duo she founded with Brian Viglione] last year and I sorta expected everything to just be there, like the quake didnt bring it all down. I was amazed at all damage and rubble. Theres a couple of things you should know about Palmer. One is that she loves her very loyal fans, is totally interactive with them and relies on them almost for her very existence. The other is that she loves being down under. Palmer views her relationship with her audience as completely 360 degrees. This has always been the case, even from the early Dresden Dolls shows in Boston. Audience members came as much to participate as to watch. They often wore dramatic make-up and clothing that pushed their cabaret/theater aesthetic. Coordinated by the bands The Dirty Business Brigade fans joined them on stage as stilt walkers, living statues, fire breathers, performing artists of all kinds they were an integral part of the shows. As Palmer ventured out solo she used crowd sourcing even more extensively. Her latest album, Theatre is Evil, recorded with the Grand Theft Orchestra, was funded through a Kickstarter.com project, raising over $1milliion. Mind you, the return on investment was also generous, with pledgees value-eligible options like decorated turntables, crafty gifts, personal portrait sketches, art books and even a personal appearance at their next fundraiser, as well as the final recorded product! The album was recorded in Melbourne with Michael Mcuilken, Chad Raines, and Jherek Bischoff, a brilliant band of reconnaissance hacks with musical super powers and producer/engineer John Congleton whos worked with a zillion amazing people including St. Vincent, Modest Mouse, and Xiu Xiu. I decided on Melbourne for two reasons, she explains. I wanted to get away from the normal and Ive recorded in a log cabin before. Its isolated and there are no distractions, but I still wanted coffee down the street and nightlife and Melbourne has that. Also Kiwis and Aussies allow me to be me: this crazy chick that breaks rules. Its a more tolerant society. I dont feel like my system isnt under fire. Palmers referring to a recent online attack of her call for local musicians to join her band on stage, promising to pay in beer money. The furore was started by a fan claimed she was exploiting talent for free, an odd comment given most AFP fans, at least in this part of the world, would amputate their necessaries to stand on stage with her. You see, thats what I love about Kiwis. Theyre much more broadminded. Its a more relaxed thing. Just enjoy the opportunity! Perfect sentiment I ask, referring to one of stand out album tracks Do it with a Rockstar. Ha. Yes thats a collision between the f**ker and the f**kee! The general stereotype of a rocker is a pastiche clich, partying till dawn, but in the unromantic reality, we just head to the hotel room, check emails, drink cocoa in our jammies. Mundane stuff. Really, Amanda. You will never be mundane.

REVIEW: PIKMIN 3
NINTENDO WII U
Not only has it been almost a decade since the last Pikmin game launched, but it has also been quite some time since Nintendo last released a fully-fledged 3D title on console. Pikmin 3 essentially kicks off what is surely going to be a great few months of solid releases for the Wii U. But is it too little, too late for those who have already written off the Wii U as an underpowered, reduced library, console? The Pikmin series has always had quite a passionate following, but due to launching on a console that wasnt exactly an over-performer, the following wasnt overly large. Thanks to that, there are probably quite a few of you who have no idea what this game is about, so let me introduce you to the amazing world of Pikmin. The gameplay in Pikmin 3 is exactly what youd expect from a Pikmin sequel: control the Pikmin to return stuff to your ship, take advantage of the Pikmins unique skills to over power the multitude of enemies in your way, and gain extra Pikmin by returning food or dead enemies to the Onion (the Pikmins organic spacecraft). Where the original game had a time limit of thirty days (each day being about thirteen minutes), Pikmin 3 only ends when you run out of food for your brave crew, which can be obtained by turning the fruit your Pikmin find into juice. Fruit can be obtained through at least one of the following ways: puzzle solving, exploration, strategic thinking, or boss battles. Pikmin 3 was a joy to play, from start to finish, and will continue being so as I make my way through all of the challenges. The game is outright adorable, and youll be hard-pressed not to crack a few grins at the army of loyal idiots following your every move. There really are only a few things wrong with this game, and only one of them is excusable. Its also a shame that due to low Wii U sales that this will likely go the way of the previous Pikmin titles: adored games with a minimal following. Pikmin 3 is a shining example of what Nintendo is capable of, its just a shame that I had almost forgotten that.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD
Powerful. Heavy. Focused. Loud. Aggressive. Are the five words Avenged Sevenfold and co-founder and guitarist Zacky Vengeance used to describe their latest offering Hail to the King. I caught up with Vengeance after a day of photo shoots and he says the band have been busy getting ready for the albums release. Hail To The King has been called a back to the roots of classic rock record and Vengeance says, that was exactly what they were going for. It was very conscious effort because thats the thing we havent done yet Were going back to our roots, its the music we love and that inspired us. Musically Hail to the King is simplified and is more stripped back than their last record Nightmare. Itsmore focused on every instrument, says Vengeance. There are huge drums and weve simplified the guitars with massive riffs. There were elements that wed always used but we brought them to the forefront. The band has stayed away from the dueling guitars and layers of vocals harmonies, which Vengeance says has lead to a more powerful record. There is much more impact and effect when you play it loud and when we play live. On the lyrical content of the record Vengeance says its quite the departure from Nightmare and more of a return to Avenged Sevenfolds story telling. We were able to move back to using metaphors to take people on a journey compared to the hard honest lyrics of Nightmare. Unsurprising the growth of the band members has been reflected in their records. Vengeance says one of their biggest changes is that theyve become more focused and they have a better understanding of song writing. This includes applying techniques theyve learnt over their decade as a band and also bringing in some of the live elements to the new record. Vengeance says he sees their job as making the music we want to make. And is grateful that their fans have allowed them to do that. He does concede that you cant make everyone happy but he isnt too bothered by the fact. There will always be people who expect a certain sound from us but you cant make everyone happy. What we can do is focus and work as hard as we can and be true to ourselves. I think thats what gives you longevity. Longevity is certainly something Avenged Sevenfold have. They formed in 1999 and have since released four records, Hail to the King marking record number five. Their break through album City Of Evil sold to platinum status and their self titled Avenged Sevenfold debuted at number one on the Billboard Alternative Hard Rock charts. This and other successes have led Avenged to be called worthy successors to Aerosmith, GunsnRoses and KISS. Vengeance says he thinks its all hype. I think people always need something to write about. So theyll always compare bands, I dont think there is another band that sounds like us, and we arent anything like them. When someones writing a review its easy to listen to the first 30 seconds of each song and then base the whole review off that, and compare us to another band. He says theyve always liked AC/DC, Metallica and Pantera, were music fans and everyone that likes rock likes those bands. But says Vengeance, were Avenged Sevenfold, we sound very much like Avenged Sevenfold. No one sounds like M. Shadows or plays guitar like me and Synyster Gates or drums like The Rev. and Arin.
