Prophetic
Vision
What is the relationship between the poetic and prophetic? Or verse and vision, maybe form and future. Better yet, how does art really affect what rational ones would call reality. I would say in many ways looking at the bible there are eerie ZMNMZMVKM[\W+PZQ[\\PI\IZMN]TTTML\WI<1VNIK\->-:AXZWXPMKa\PI\ ZMNMZZML\WWZQUIOQVML+PZQ[\_I[N]TTTML<PQ[Q[\PMIKK]ZIKa\PI\KIVWVTaJM facilitated by way of the Holy Spirit. Hundreds of years would pass between Isaiahs prophecies and the birth of Jesus, but consider this verse from Isaiah 53:7:

0M_I[WXXZM[[MLIVL0M_I[INQK\MLAM\0MWXMVMLVW\0Q[UW]\P#0M_I[ led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.
Isaiah began his ministry in 750 B.C. Over 700 hundred years before the birth of Christ. This is a clear example of the poetic becoming the prophetic. When art is at its strongest is when married with the Spirit of the Living /WLW]\W_[\Z]MQV[XQZI\QWV Written word becomes a powerful precursor for what God will bring about in the future. So is prophecy foretelling (seeing what will transpire in the future)? Or forth telling (causing it to happen)? I like to believe it is a healthy mix of both. Prophecy like poetry is a taste of what is to come. As we read the words of a talented poet, or composer. Like David. We are transported to a time when the full version of the goodness in the future is made apparent. This is the way God has always taught me to expect good things. When I was about 11 years old, I visited a friend of mine and spent the night over his house. It was around 20 miles from my home I shared with my mother, Father and 6 other siblings. At that age it might as well have been 1000 miles away for my world was relatively small. I decided to go on a bike ride through his neighborhood and weaved around well-trimmed lawns on clean avenues and found myself in front of a school. I stopped and looked at the school for a long time, but I did not know why. Two years later after many moves in state and out of state, also a couple twists of fate. I found myself attending that same school. God gave me a glimpse of my future then he took me there. This is the prophetic at work, all the more powerful when mirrored by the audacity of verse. Be bold, write a poem, and make up a song. It may give you a glimpse or catalyze manifestation of your destiny. .bam! Nathan Bam Bam Stanton Creative Director| Metatron magazine

The following is a message that has been said in a million different ways, spanning time and cultural groups. Just a few versions are: No regrets. Spend the LIa#aW]KIV\\ISMQ\_Q\PaW]+IZXM Diem. Or as Mother Teresa said, AM[\MZLIaQ[OWVM<WUWZZW_PI[VW\ yet come. We have only today. Let us begin. But what does living in the moment mean? The passage of time is one thing we can count on. The seasons may change even the extremity of the seasons may change, but time will continue on. Time will continue as it always has, and we will forever be a moment older than we _MZMJMNWZM-^MZaWVM_MTW^MQ[IOQVO as we are aging, and there is no way to stop it. Pray and hope as we might, time would appear to be a constant within which we are to be ]VQ^MZ[ITTaKWVVML during our existence on this planet. As W. H. Auden explained this idea in his poem, As I Walked out One -^MVQVO" In the burrows of the Nightmare Where Justice naked is, Time watches from the shadow And coughs when you would kiss. We pass hours, days, and years. When we are babies, our parents tally the months as we grow and develop and learn. Then we become children, itching to be grown and independent, and at last we are adults, yearning for our youth. Many of us become parents, and the LIa[aJaI[_M_I\KPW]ZW_VKPQTLZMV grow and our own parents get old, and we are often too busy to enjoy much of it. Then we become old and wish for our youth and energy. And always, always, there is an element of wishing that time would stand still or hurry on or move in reverse. We are always wishing we were older or younger or reliving past experiences or wanting to VQ[P\PMKPWZM[[W_MKIV[SQXIPMIL\W the most joyful moments. Is it possible to free ourselves from these supremely human desires? Is it possible to forget about the past and the future and live each minute fully? One thing I have learned about life is that almost nothing is as good as you IV\QKQXI\M:MITQ\a is all too real. In memory and in anticipation, experiences are golden and the unpleasantness surrounding them falls away, but in the moments as they are occurring, they rarely live up to what we have pictured. Our brains have a sublime ability to create images of supreme perfection.

Our anticipation and perfect memories are our spiritual perspective.

But there is no perfect gift that can provide that much joy, and the day always ends up anticlimactic. The holiday usually lives on with beauty in my memory, but in the moment, there are usually many unwanted gifts awkwardly unwrapped and acknowledged and disappointment when the longed-for unwrapping is over (if you have not experienced this, you may not have children). 1WN\MVVLUa[MTNTW[\QVMV^aIJW]\[WUMWVM[TQNMWV.IKMJWWS usually someone who lives far away in a tropical country and is doing some sort of fantastically creative and generous humanitarian work. My ability to let these feelings of envy and imagining what-if, is truly impressive. Now I am not going to spend another moment regretting the time I spend being envious, but I will say that as a mother of young children, it is particularly sad. I spend moments, minutes, even hours fantasizing about other lives and memories, when I could be enjoying these moments now with my children. The experiences of romance and love, even parental love, are similar. We fantasize about sharing our soul with someone, but

Our anticipation and perfect memories are our spiritual perspective. It is how our lives could be viewed through the divine. But the stark reality of each moment has potential for holiness too. If we can look at the world around us as a constant, all-too-real miracleif we can accept the pain with the pleasure at least for this time we are put on earth, we can maintain a state of contentment. If we can let go of our concerns and our desire to control all circumstances, we can experience each day as a steady stream of singularly euphoric moments of epiphany. It may sound like I am talking about enlightenment, and perhaps I am. Just as very few people have ever supposedly reached enlightenment, it would be nearly impossible to successfully live each moment in its own fullness. But our contentment can grow in as much as we are able to shed our concerns and wishes and regrets and let ourselves be present. There are few things we can control in life. One thing I have learned is that each day I can expect something unexpected, M^MV[PWKSQVO\WWKK]ZAW]\Z]TaVM^MZSVW__PI\_QTT happen next. If we can learn to accept this idea without fear, we can experience freedom from one of the worst distractionsworry. There are many things in life that we must do, whether we like them or not. What does this mean for us as artists? How can we be creative if we let ourselves enjoy the mundane instead of focusing on the business of our creative work? First of all, we can let the mundane be inspirational. Let conversations with the neighbors that could be viewed as distractions inform our ideas of humanity and God and teach us to love more fully. Only by letting ourselves forget our other concerns and be in the moment with our neighbor, listening and sharing life, can we love him or her. We are given the chance to practice gratefulness in spite of ourselves and reminded to pay attention to and love the people we are with. In order to create anything, we must love our muse. If we are to be inspired, we must let go of control and yes, be in the moment. This may mean getting the dishes put away so that we can sit down at the canvas, or it may mean doing the dishes and feeding our dreams simultaneously. Terry Hogg: A MYstic Revelation

Many poets are not poets for the same reason that many religious men are not saints: they never succeed in being themselves. They never get around to being the particular poet or the particular monk they are intended to be by God. They never become the man or the artist who is called for by all the circumstances of their individual lives. Thomas Merton
1Z[\PMIZLWN<MZZa0WOO_PMVPMKIUM\W+PQKIOW\WTMILI_MMSMVLZM\ZMI\ on Celtic contemplative prayer for our church. I had no idea what to expect, but Terry was going to be staying at our friends house, so I knew that I would have an opportunity to meet him. Once he arrived, my friend, Carrie, was eager for me to meet him, convinced I would be intrigued. And she was right. I have met few people in my life who I highly respect without feeling insecure about the things I have not yet achieved, but Terry is someone who impressed me with his wisdom and thoughtfulness while making me just want to enjoy being who I am. Terry has been working on a book for a long time, and I was given the opportunity to interview him about his writing. .WZUIVaXMWXTMQVKT]LQVOUM\PMJWWSWN:M^MTI\QWVPI[KWUM\WMUJWLa something terrifying. Someone said of Terry that he was so into the mystics that he became one himself and we joke that Terry is our resident Irish mystic here in Oak Park, IL. A mystic is a person who seeks by contemplation and self-surrender to obtain unity with or absorption into the Deity or the absolute, or who believes in the spiritual apprehension of truths that are beyond the intellect.
