Four Levels of Reading Comprehension (adler & van doren) 1st Level - Understanding the literal meaning of words

and sentences 2nd Level inspectual reading or systematic skimming - Goal: to get the most out of the book within a given time 3rd Level analytic reading - Goal: a deeper more complete understanding of the contents of the book - It is necessary to consider the structure of the book, the authors intentions, characterization, plot, narrator etc. th 4 Level - comparative reading - Goal: generate a critical or novel interpretation of the text - The readers needs to use inspectual and analytical skills acquired previously Challs Reading Stages Stage 0 Pre-reading: Birth to Age 6 - Children gain insights into the nature of the words that sound the same at their ends or beginnings (rhyme & alliteration), that they can be broken parts, and that part can be put together (synthesized, blended) to form whole words. Stage 1 Beginning Reading Stage: (Age 6-7) - Characterized by word substitution errors - Largely an inside-out process one that depends more on the reader than on what is read Stage 2 Confirmation, Fluency, Ungluing from Print: (Ages 7-8) - Not for gaining information, but for confirming what is already known to the reader - Requires an opportunity for reading many familiar books Stage 3 Reading for Learning the New: A First Step - Reading to learn the new knowledge, information, thoughts and experiences - Best develop with materials and purposes that are clear, within ones view point, and limited in technical complexities - Characterized by the growing importance of word meanings and of prior knowledge Stage 4 Multiple Viewpoints: High School (Ages 14-18) - Characterized by the involvement of more than one point of view - Involves an ability to deal with layers of facts and concepts added on to those acquired earlier - Mostly acquired through formal education Stage 5 Construction and Reconstruction- A World View: (Age 18 & above) - Most mature stage - Reading that is essentially constructive ability to construct knowledge on a high level of abstraction and generality and to create ones own ideas from the ideas of others - The reader already knows what to and what not to read IMPORTANCE OF READING 1. Reading is the tool for exposing readers esp. children to different people, personalities and attitudes. Emotional intelligence can be developed trough reading. 2. Improves childrens vocabulary in which they can express themselves freely without any difficult y. 3. Books can serve as inspiration to readers. 4. Improves childrens analytical thinking.
