We will begin the year with a Social Studies/Science Unit about how, Different materials and processes shape our planet. You need to be able to answer the essential questions below:
1) How do different natural processes (ex: floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, etc...) change the earths surface rapidly? 2) How does gravity cause changes in the earths surface by pulling objects towards it such as rocksli des, mudslides, avalanches, etc...? 3) How do weathering, erosion, and deposition contribute to earths ever changing surface? 4) How do natural agents of wind, water, and ice produce slow changes to earths surface over time such as creating canyons, or building sand dunes? 5) Explain a real world natural disaster/process has greatly impacted the world around you?
You may also choose your own wanna questions. These can be questions about anything you wanna learn that relates to this topic.
Informational Writing
In order to demonstrate their understanding of their content, you should complete a written informational writing that answers the essential questions above. Your writing must meet the nonnegotiables listed below:
You must use proper capitalization for the beginning of sentences and proper nouns. Every sentence ends with appropriate punctuation. Every sentence is complete with a subject and a predicate. Grade appropriate and content appropriate words need to be spelled correctly. Your writing must flow well and proper grammar needs to be used consistently. Your information must be organized into paragraphs that are indented. You need to include text features and graphic aides that add to the organization and information in your text.
Art Connection
You also need to identify an artist -OR- create a work of art that relates to our magnet enduring understanding arts are a reflection of the human experience as it relates to our topic above. You need to provide a brief description on how your, or the artists, experiences led them to create their work of art.
If you choose to create your own art, you may choose from the product card criteria list following the examples below for what we are looking for in your product. Some examples could be the following: Artist: Title of work: Kansas Joe McCoy & Memphis Minnie When the Levee Breaks (song) *Later remade by Led Zeppelin* Personal Experience: The artists wrote this song as a reaction to the upheaval of the, Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. This caused a massive migration of minorities to northern cities during a time of civil unrest.
One evening I was walking along a path, the city was on one side and the fjord below. I felt tired and ill. I stopped and looked out over the fjordthe sun was setting, and the clouds turning blood red. I sensed a scream passing through nature; it seemed to me that I heard the scream. I painted this picture, painted the clouds as actual blood. The color shrieked. This became The Scream.
Artist: Title of Work: Louis Henri Sullivan Wainwright building in St. Louis (building) Personal Experience: The Great Fire of 1871 in Chicago led to architects like Sullivan to create new buildings made out of steel rather than wood. This led to buildings that were much more stable and resistant to naturally occurring processes such as fires and earthquakes.

Powerpoint/Prezi - Slideshow Presentation Text features are used effectively and correctly. Images are appropriate to topic and add to the audiences understanding. Follows a specific sequence - uses transition words. There is evidence of a strong introduction and conclusion. Video/Vodcast Scenes, and graphics, are relevant and synchronize with audio. Content flows in a specific, coherent sequence Transitional slides, graphics and words are used to organize thoughts and adhere the vodcast together Timing is an appropriate length Voices and faces are appropriately animated
Podcast The speakers voice is clear and consistently heard throughout the entire length of the audio. Follows a specific sequence - uses transition words. There is evidence of a strong introduction and conclusion.
Visual Art (Collage, Picture Postcard or Drawing) The topic is clearly explained through an oral presentation. A common theme/purpose/message is evident. There are details included to support the purpose
Model/Diorama All parts are clearly labeled. All parts are relevant and help the audience to understand the purpose of the model. The scale is proportional and explained. The model is clearly explained through an oral presentation.
