Determination of selenium content in soil and parent material by HG-AAS

Full Text By Stanciu-Burileanu, Mihaela Monica; Constantin, Luca; Lacatusu, Radu; Stroe, Venera Mihaela From Revista de Chimie (Bucharest, Romania) (2012), 63(6), 553-556. | Language: English, Database: CAPLUS HG-AAS (hydride generation coupled with at. absorption spectrometry) was applied to assess Se concns. in some soil and parental material samples from South-Eastern Romanian Plain and Central-South Dobrogea. Se anal. by HG-AAS requires digestion of solid samples to release Se into a soln., and extn. of mobile Se content with a common extn. soln., namely EDTA with ammonium acetate. Traditionally, wet acid digestion was used which involves digestion/heating with strong acids to destroy the org. matter and dissolve the metal ions. The proposed procedure involves microwave sample prepn. by a mixt. of H2O2/HNO3/HCl. Parameters for the redn. of Se(VI) to Se(IV) in HCl medium by heating in a microwave oven were optimized. These contents were detd. by HG-AAS. The concns. of Se are within the allowed limits, even lower. Certain parameters of the method were validated for Se content detn. from soil and plant samples by HG-AAS: the working concns., linearity, detection limit, quantification limit. Data obtained regarding Se content confirms its deficiency in the studied area.

Detg. and labeling recovery tests are made on the arsenic and mercury in several phosphate rocks and WPA, the av. recoveries for arsenic and mercury are 97.51%-97.81% and 99.06%-102.85% resp. There are no significant differences in test results between the HG-AAS and other classical methods. HG-AAS for the detn. of arsenic and mercury is simple, feasible and with high precision and accuracy, it is worthy popularization.

Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry Method for the Determination of Arsenic at Ultramicro Levels

Abstract
A simple and rapid hydride generation atomic absorption spectrophotometry (HG AAS) for the determination of arsenic in samples at very low concentrations has been developed. The method is based on the reaction of NaBH4 with acidified sample and separation of analyte as hydride from the matrix before determination. The arsine was transported to the quartz T-tube heated at 900C for detection. The concentrations of HF solution used in the preparation of the samples were carefully controlled to avoid the formation of fluoro-complexed ions. The correlation coefficient (r2) was 0.989. The limit of detection, (LOD), was calculated as 0.71 g g1. The sensitivity of the method was found to be 0.000024 g L1. The method was applied successfully for the determination of arsenic in slurries from different sources and was found to be effective in the range 0.00022.35 g L1. Of all the ions tested, no ion was found to have a significant interference effect on the accuracy of the method.
