Cup 2007
ROUND ONE MAVER LARFORD LAKES
When 76 of the best match anglers in the country went into battle we expected it to be an exciting match and it denitely was! So, who made it through to the second round?
ith a brand-new format in place for the 2007 Match Fishing Cup we were delighted when 76 anglers accepted our invitation to take part. To accommodate more top match stars this time around we decided to run the competition over six knockout rounds, culminating in two anglers slugging it out on a two-day, all-expenses-paid final at Docklow Pools, in September. The eventual winner will receive a 2,000 cash prize plus the coveted trophy, but to get to the final he or she will have to get through five previous rounds, which will take in a variety of commercial and natural venues. After much careful thought we decided to stage the first round at the fabulous Maver Larford Lakes complex, in Worcestershire, with an equal split of anglers on Specimen and Match lakes. After that, the top 16 anglers on weight from each lake would go through. Most of the competitors seemed to want to draw on Match Lake, as this was the lake that many thought would offer the most consistent sport. With top-three prizes of 300, 200, 100, and five-peg section prizes of 75 (outside the main list) up for grabs there was something for everyone to fish for. The main object of the exercise, though, was to get into the top 16 on each lake to guarantee a passage into Round Two.

The all-important Round-One draw.

THE MATCH FISHING CUP ROUND ONE

As expected, Match Lake accounted for most of the top weights on the day with Andy Kinder coming out on top with 1437-0 at Peg 16. Four-times World Champion Alan Scotthorne took second place on the lake and in the match with 140-15-0 from Peg 28, and former Kamasan Matchman Of The Year Andy May came in third with 124-0-0. The 16th and last qualifying weight on this lake was Ben Leachs 95-9-0. Over on Speci Lake, England star Will Raison was being tipped by many to win the match after the first three hours, having caught several big carp on a long-range, big-waggler shallow approach at Peg 21. Unfortunately for Will the bites dried up as the match progressed, but his 109-3-0 was easily enough for top spot on this lake. His practice session proved invaluable, however, because the next day he drew the same lake and fished in the same way to win a Fish O Mania qualifier! Second place on Speci went to Simon Gould, who recorded 73-15-0 of carp from Peg 73 and third went to Dean Smith with 64-5-0 from Peg 32, a weight that included over 40lb of skimmers. Mark Tomlin and Stephen Pettit, the two lucky readers who won places in the first round courtesy of our April-issue competition, unfortunately fell at the first hurdle. Mark drew Peg 8 on Match Lake and finished just 15lb off a qualifying place with 80-7-8 while Stephen also failed to get through, from Peg 56 on Speci Lake. They were in good company, though, as both of last years finalists, Steve Ringer and Kieron Rich, along with the likes of Darren Cox, Jamie Masson, Andy Findlay and venue record holder Klaus Fix all went out of the competition. Round Two is at the popular Heronbrook Fisheries, at Slindon in Staffordshire, and its anyones guess as to who will make it through to the final now. We already know that a new name will be on the trophy, though, so whos your money on?

Its anyones guess as to who will make it to the nal, but there will be a new name on the trophy.
Rob Perkins did the ton on Match Lake.

Will Raison obliterated Specimen Lake.

Maver Larford was the perfect stage to kick off the new-look Match Fishing Cup.

Just a few of the stars on show!

Steve Sanders 96-14-0 was good enough for the 14th qualifying place on Match Lake..

Les Thompson was fourth overall on Match Lake.

Grant Albutt just sneaked in to Round Two.

Alan Scotthorne showed his class for second in the match.

Peg 16 Match Lake, 143-7-0 I shed here two weeks ago on the Maver Pairs, and had 110lb on a Method feeder two pegs away from where I was today so I decided on an all-out Method attack this time as well. With Steve Ringer on one side and Carl Jones on the other I suspected Id get the feeder line to myself, as theyd probably base their attacks around the pole, and thats how it turned out. I set up just one rod, a Maver 12ft Reactorlite Ready Feeder, with 0.23mm Jurassic main line. The feeder was a prototype of a new, inline, Craig OBrien Method feeder, which is about the size of a matchbox. My hooklength was four inches of 0.20mm Genesis tied to a size 12 MT3 hook. Groundbait was a 50/50 mix of Ringers Dark and Normal groundbait and hook bait was two or three dead red maggots. I shed the feeder at around 25 metres out and for the rst hour only left it in for about a minute or so before recasting. I also fed about a pint of hard 6mm pellets with a catapult over the top of this line for the rst hour, and another pint steadily throughout the remaining four hours. I found that although there were a lot of sh in my swim I had to bury the hook bait in the groundbait to get bites. If I left it hanging I couldnt get bites anywhere near as quick. At one stage I was getting a bite within 10 seconds of the feeder hitting the bottom, thats how many sh were there! By the end Id got through about 3kg of the groundbait mix, two pints of 6mm pellets and a handful of dead red maggots. Ive really enjoyed it today, and it means a lot to me to win a match like this, with so many top-quality anglers taking part.

Peg 28 Match Lake, 140-15-0 I was happy when I drew Match as this is the lake that I wanted to be on, and Ive recently been spending a lot of time shing for F1s, which are the main species in this lake. I started with my usual approach for F1 venues, on a top two plus three sections of pole. Using a small sprinkle pot I fed around half a dozen venue pellets every put-in, with a 4.5mm Ringers Cool Water pellet on the hook, a size 16 Mustad Wide Gape Canal Seed tied to 0.11mm Shimano Silk Shock line. Main line was 0.14mm of the same. My oat was a 0.25g Drennan Tipo with all the shot bulked seven inches from the hook in three feet of water. After half an hour Id got 12 sh, which was a good start, and Id also been feeding casters long at 11 to 13 metres. As the near line started to fade I switched to the long-pole line, where I was still feeding casters, with single maggot on a size 18 hook. I had a bit of a nightmare for a while as small roach and skimmers intercepted the bait, but eventually I started to catch a few F1s as well. The angler next to me, on pellets, was in front after two hours but going into the third hour his bites were slowing down while mine were getting stronger. I eventually settled on a 0.1g shallow rig with around two feet of line between the tip and the oat, which was set at seven inches with all the shot underneath it. Elastic on both rigs was No8 coloured latex and this was just about right for the size of sh I caught. By continually feeding casters and a few pellets I had a very good last two hours, ending with 30 sh in the last hour. By the end of the match Id fed six pints of casters and one and a half pints of pellets, and I was very pleased with my result. Peg 34 Match Lake, 124-0-0 I was happy with my draw as friends told me I was on a good Method feeder and pole peg. The only problem was that it was very snaggy on the feeder line. I set up two Method-feeder rigs and three pole rigs and started on the Method. Even with 0.20mm line it was a nightmare trying to get sh back and I lost 10 in a snag in the rst half hour. Clearly the feeder a was waste of time so I switched to my pole rigs, all of which were shallow set-ups using cut-down 3x8 and 4x8 Preston Chianti and Somo oats, taking just two No12 shots. Through the course of the ve hours I caught on these set at between eight inches and two feet and shed at 11 metres with my Mosella Xedion pole and grey Daiwa Hydrolastic. Main lines on all three of the rigs I set up were 0.14mm Ultima Power Match tied direct to a size 16 Gamakatsu Barbless Pellet hook. Over the course of the ve hours I loose fed the swim with 15 to 20 pellets of the venues own 4mm pellets every 20 to 30 seconds, and used a 6mm, banded, hair-rigged pellet as hook bait, and I got through the full limit of three bags. The swim got stronger and stronger as the match went on but it was important to keep the pellets going in to keep the sh up in the water and to keep them in my swim. Im delighted to get through to the second round, and the good news this time around is that I cant get knocked out by my old mate Kieron Rich, as hes gone out himself today! I love the new format of this event and Ill be going at out to get through the next round and into the last 16. Theres a huge amount of prestige in winning this type of competition.
