CCB 2033 - Heat Transfer Design Tutorial - 4 (Radiation Heat Transfer)

27th March 2013 (Submission Deadline: 3rd April 2013) 1. Radiant energy with an intensity of 700 W/m2 strikes a flat plate normally. The absorptivity is twice the transmissivity and 2.9 times its reflectivity. Find out the rate of absorption, transmission and reflection of energy in W/m2. (379.4, 189.7 and 130.9 W/m2) Fused quartz transmits 90 percent of the incident thermal radiation between 0.2 and 4 m. Suppose a certain heat source is viewed through a quartz window, what heat flux will be transmitted through the material from black body radiation sources at 800 oC and 550 oC? (35933 W/m2 and 7919 W/m2) A furnace door has a small opening of diameter 3 cm. If the furnace is at 1200oC and the outside air temperature is 30oC, calculate the hourly radiation heat loss through the opening. (188.3 W) A gray body at 2500 K has a total emissive power of 2.0106 W/m2. Determine (a) emissivity of the body, (b) maximum monochromatic emissive power, (c) the wavelength at which the maximum radiation occurs. (0.903, 1255.46 kW/m2.m, 1.1592m) For a blackbody at a temperature of 1000oC, calculate: (a) the wavelength at which the body has the maximum monochromatic emissive power, and the corresponding emissive power; (b) the total emissive power of the blackbody; (c) the percentage reduction in the total emissive power when the temperature of the body falls down to 900oC. (2.27m, 43.02 kW/m2.m, 148.9 kW/m2, 53.96%, 27.9%) The absorber surface of a solar collector having = 0.83 and = 0.1. The rate of solar radiation incidence on the surface is 600 W/m2. The air temperature is at 35C and the effective sky temperature is 20C. The convection heat transfer coefficient is 10 W/m2C. For an absorber surface temperature of 75C, determine the net rate of solar energy delivered by the absorber plate to the water circulating behind it. A 1.5 m internal diameter double walled spherical tank is used to store hot water and steam at 100C. The inner and outer walls are separated with the 2 cm thick space. The air between the two walls of the tank is evacuated in order to minimize the heat transfer. The surfaces surrounding the evacuated space are polished so that each surface has an emissivity, = 0.09. The temperature of the outer wall of the tank is measured to be 30C. By assuming the conduction resistances of the walls are negligible and calculate the rate of heat transfer from the hot water in the tank. Three infinite parallel planes 1, 2 and 3 having emissivities 1=0.2, 2=0.5 and 3=0.8 are arranged as shown in the figure. Plate 1 is maintained at 1200 K and plate 3 is maintained at 300 K. Plate 2 do not receive any heat from external sources. What is the temperature of the plate 2?

The surface of the thermocouple has an emissivity of 0.7 and a convection heat transfer coefficient of 20 W/m2C. The thermocouple indicates a temperature of 700 C. The true temperature of the air is only 650 C. Estimate the temperature of the walls of the furnace.
