Name: Jehan Watamama Sec/yr: BSN 1B Subject: ACM REFLECTION: CAPPING AND PINNING CEREMONY HELD AT NOTRE DAME

E UNIVERSITY GYMNASIUM Questions: 1) What is the activity all about? A capping and pinning ceremony is a symbolic welcoming of newly graduated nurses into the nursing profession. The new nurses are presented with nursing pins by their parents and for males is the imposing of badges. Also, there is a recital of what they so-called the Nightingale Pledge. The activity also includes a song by the students which made the program so solemn. It also includes picture takings with the clinical instructors. Also includes giving of the students a gift or presents for their parents. There are several traditions in the nursing profession that are rooted in ceremony: capping and pinning rituals, recitation of the Nightingale Pledge. These traditions strengthen ties to an institution and serve as connecting experiences for students and teachers. As times have changed, the profession has adapted some of these traditions, reflecting a connection between historical and modern views of nursing. 2) What is the significance of the activity? Having the cap is significant since this represents achievement of a goal, a stepping stone to achievement of other goals. Our clinical instructors were the one who invited us to watch the capping of the 2nd year nursing students. The significance of the activity is to make the student be recognized as a student nurse qualified and allowed to give care. Most of the students consider this as their memorable experience since they will be wearing their white uniform already and will feel just like a nurse while on their duty. This is important because this will signify that the sophomore were able to complete the requirements to be able to be allowed to have the white uniform as well as the right to wear the cap and have duty. 3) What insight have you learned regarding the activity? One of the most memorable events in the life of a Nursing student is the Nursing Capping, Lighting and Pinning Ceremony. The students seem very excited with this ceremony. It marks the beginning of their baptism of fire in the real Nursing world, where they will be exposed to the medical world. This symbolizes the passing of the flame from Nightingale to each nurse, as they recite the nurses pledge. Despite of the many negative feedbacks relative to the course nursing I still would want to be on where they are. In just a couple of years from now, I am looking forward to my own capping and pinning ceremony and then board exams. But i would just like to take it one day it a time. I am very inspired with my cousin who just passed her licensure exams and now a registered nurse already. If she made it and then I know I can too. She have been telling us before regarding this ceremony and I also witness her capping ceremony and I want to be as successful as she is. I started to realize that all the person saying that nursing is not a

profession, everyone can be a nurse that isnt true because nursing is not just talks about that. Nursing encompasses many things, I should be aware of myself first before I could say I will be effective. And the pledge was so heart promising that you really need to take that pledge by heart. Other courses I think doesnt have a ceremony like this. 4) Comments and suggestion? The program was perfect. It is organized well. There are assistants for the parents which made it so good. Also, it is good that there is picture taking or specific photographer for the students. Also, a little suggestion is that it would be better if there will be a longer moment for the student in the stage. And also there will be a separate song for their parents while giving gifts.
