Campus highlights
The university campus is based in Dartmouth, with satellite facilities on the southern coast of Massachusetts. Just one hour from Boston, the 700-acre campus is between Providence, Rhode Island and Cape Cod. It is also less than an hours drive to the famed sailing city of Newport, Rhode Island and to Nantucket, Massachusetts, both offering an abundance of water sports. Ring Road is a two-mile, circular route that serves as the only way to and from campus. Often called the ring, this thoroughfare separates the academic part of campus from the first-year residence halls, athletics complex, public safety station, and observatory. Its unique design stops vehicle traffic entering the center of campus, which helps create a clean, simple learning environment with lots of green space. The ring is also popular among joggers. The Karam Campanile is a free-standing bell tower that chimes every 15 minutes. It was designed by Paul Rudolph to mark the center of the campus. The antenna atop the tower broadcasts the universitys radio station WUMD 89.3 FM to Southern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and Rhode Island. The much-loved UMass Dartmouth mascot is the Corsair. This pirate mascot represents the adventurous and courageous spirit of our student athletes and scholars.
