Visitthecontrolshacktoobserveplantoperation.Notemixtemperatureand plantsettingstomakesurethingsarerunningsmoothlyandplantsettings havenotchangedwithoutpropernotification.Mixtemperaturesthataretoo highwillbreakdowntheasphaltcementandreducethelifeofthepavement. b. MonitortheContractorsoperationsattheplantsite. 1. Stockpilesshouldbecheckedtomakesuretheloaderoperatorisnotgetting materialfrombelowthepileorsegregatingthepileasheremovesmaterial. 2. Coldfeedbinsandconveyorsshouldbeexaminedtomakesurematerialis beingfedconsistentlyinthecorrectproportionstothedrumandisnot segregating.

Makesurethespraybarisheated. 5. Knowwhatthedilutionrateis. 6. Makesurethepavingsurfaceisclean.Tackwillbondtodustanddirtonthe roadwayandcouldbepickedupbytrucksandthepaver. 7. Checkthatallnozzlesareworkingproperly. 8. Checkthebarheighttomakesurecoverageofthepavingsurfaceisuniform. 9. Makesureanyverticalsurfacesaretackcoated. 10. Recordthebeginningandendingstationsofeachtackshot. 11. Aftertackisappliedchecktheamountoftackleftinthedistributortocheckand recordtherateofapplication. b. Rollers 1. Makesurethereareenoughrollerstoproperlycompactthepavement. 2. Checktoseethatspraybaruniformlyapplieswatertotherollerdrum. 3. Checkthatvibratorsareworkingproperlyandchecktheamplitudeandfrequencyof thevibrators. 4. Verifythemanufacturersrecommendedcontactpressureforpneumaticrollers. Checktirepressuresandmakesurealltiresareinflatedtothesamepressure;there shouldbenomorethan5psidifferencebetweenanyofthetires. c. Paver. 1. Checkthatgradecontrolsystemisinplace. 2. Checkthatscreedispreheated. 3. Checkthatscreedvibratorsareworkingandinusewhilepaving. 4. Makesurethehopperhasnomixfrompreviouspavingorothermaterialthatmay contaminatethemix. 5. Makesurethereisnodieselfuelonthepavertocleanhandtools. 6. Checktheaugerstomakesuretheyextendtowithinonefootofthewidthofthe screed. d. Paving. 1. Makesurethereareisenoughtrucksandmaterialtoallowcontinuouspaving. Makesuretrafficcontrolisinplaceandeverythingisinordertosafelycontrolthe workzone. 2. Ideallythepavershouldneverstop. Page4of6

3. Checkthatthereisadequateguidanceforthepaveroperatortofollowtoproduce straighttangentsandsmoothcurves. 4. Collecthaulticketsforeachloadofmixdelivered. 5. Checkthemixtemperature.Coldmixoracoldscreedwillresultintearingthe pavementsurface. 6. Checkthatthereareblocksprovidedforthescreedtosetontoallowmaterialfor rolldownatthejoint. 7. Makesurehandworkforthelongitudinaljointisdonepromptlysocompactioncan occurbeforethematerialcools.Handworkshouldbekepttoaminimumand excessmaterialshouldbewastednotspreadacrossthenewlypavedsurface. 8. Checkthetransversejointtomakesurethereisnobumpafteritiscompacted. 9. Ifpavingtomatchanadjacentliftmakesuretoallowenoughmaterialfor2025% rolldowntoachievepropercompactionatthelongitudinaljoint.Ifthereisnot enoughmaterialthejointmaylooksmoothandsealedbutnothaveadequate compactiontopreventearlyfailures. 10. Checkthepavementsurfacebehindthepaver.Thesurfaceshouldbeuniformand freeofsegregation,streaks,dragsorshadows.Ifanyirregularitiesarefound requestthecontractortocorrectthem. 11. Checkthewidthofthepavementsurfacetoverifytheplanwidthwillresult. 12. Checkthicknesstoverifythatthedesiredthicknesswillbeachievedafter compaction. 13. Checkthecrossslopetodetermineifthepropercamberisinthescreed.Agood startingpointisonehalfinchcamberinthemiddleofthesection.Thisallowsfor rolldownresultinginconstantslopeaftercompaction. 14. Checkthesloughstomakesuretheyareattheproperslopeandcompacted. 15. Checkthelevelofmaterialinfrontofthescreed.Thelevelshouldbeconstantat themidpointoftheaugers. 16. Thehoppershouldbeatleasthalffullatalltimes. 17. Segregationwilloccurinthehopperasitisloaded.Thewingsshouldnotbe dumpedduringpaving. 18. Wherefreshlyplacedpavementisnotconfinedbycurbandgutter,oranadjacent lift,begincompactionapproximatelysixinchesinsidethepavementedge.Where thepavementisconfinedbegincompactionoverlappingtheedges.Compact towardthemiddleofthesection. 19. Checkthespeedofthepaverswiththefrequencyandamplitudeofthevibratorsto getthebestrideresults.Itisimportanttoachieve810impactsperfoot,lessthan thatmayproducearipplingeffectinthepavement.Excessiveimpactsoramplitude maycausechecking. 20. Afteracompactionsequencehasbeendeterminedmakesuretherolleroperators followthepattern.Ifconditionschangeandanewcompactionsequenceis necessarydetermineapatternthatworksandfollowthat. 21. Checkthepavementtemperaturetomakesurethecompactionsequenceis completebeforethetemperaturedropsbelow185degrees. 22. Checkbehindtherollerstoverifyplanwidthisbeingproduced.Checkthatthe slopeacrossthesectionisuniform,ifitisnotadjustthecamberinthescreedto correctit.

23. Checkthesurfaceaftercompactiontomakesureitisuniform,dense,andfreefrom irregularities.Thereshouldbenosegregation,streaks,tearing,steelrollermarks,or checking. 24. Monitortherateofapplicationofthepavingoperationtomakeadjustmentstothe spreadratetokeeponpacetomeetplanquantity.Comparetheresultstothe calculatedspreadrate.Thisshouldbedoneapproximatelyevery500tons.Make gradualchangestobringtherateinline.Spreadratesaredefinedbythetonsof mixplaceddividedbythenumberofstationsbetweenthebeginningandending stations.Itisalsoimportanttotrackthecumulativespreadrate.Ifthecontractoris askedtoincreasethicknessbecausethespreadrateislowtheideaistogetbackon tracktomeetplanquantity.Iftheadjustmentistoorapidorlaststoolonganother correctionwillbenecessary.Itisnotgoodpracticetoconstantlychangethickness. 25. Priortoeachdayspavingdeducttheamountofmixpreviouslyplacedfromplan quantityandrecalculateanewspreadrate.
