The 150th anniversary of Bayer AG is an occasion to celebrate innovation and quality. What started as a dyestuffs factory in the Barmen district of Wuppertal is now a global corporation with more than 110,000 employees. Although that sounds like tradition and continuity, it is a success story about change. The spirit of inventiveness and the will to succeed form a bridge spanning the companys history from its origins 150 years ago to today. In the beginning there was a friendship between two men, plenty of a researchers natural curiosity and two kitchen stoves. On these, businessman Friedrich Bayer and dyer Johann Friedrich Weskott conducted experiments and eventually discovered how to make the dye fuchsine. In 1863 they established the Friedr. Bayer et. comp company. Bayer products today help to improve the quality of life for people and animals. One example is the pain reliever Aspirin, which came on the market in 1899 and remains one of Bayers top products to this day. When Bayer started selling Antinonnin, the worlds first synthetic insecticide for controlling the nun moth, in 1892, it was the start of the success story that is now Bayer CropScience. In the area of high-performance materials, the polyurethanes for foams discovered in the 1930s and the high-performance polycarbonate (Makrolon) patented in 1953 are the foundation for an everexpanding range of applications. These include lightfast polyurethane coatings, made possible by the Desmodur N family of crosslinkers invented by Dr. Kuno Wagner, and raw materials for the production of anti-corrosion coatings for ships, aircraft and automobiles. Today, high-performance materials from Bayer MaterialScience make an important contribution to conserving fossil resources. It is thanks to the invention of aliphatic polyurethane coatings that assets can be preserved for longer than ever before. Modern coating systems withstand both wind and weather, impart durability and a glossy finish. At the same time, Bayer MaterialSciences production technologies set standards in safety, quality and cost efficiency. A continuous flow of new innovations that benefit both society and the environment provides for sustainable growth. In this way, our products live up to our mission, Bayer: Science for a better life.
Leading in polyurethanes
The Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties (CAS) Business Unit is characterized by its broad range of products and many years of experience in research and development. On this foundation, CAS takes a leading role in polyurethane raw materials, such as isocyanates and polyols, including modified systems such as polyurethane dispersions, silane-terminated prepolymers and blocked isocyanates. ity of aliphatic polyurethane systems. Examples Products manufactured from CAS raw materials are used, for instance, to coat buses, trains and ships. They have an extremely long shelf life and offer good weathering and corrosion protection. For this reason, they also are critical in the manufacturing of wind turbines, pipelines and steel structures. Our raw materials also serve various purposes in the timber processing industry. In paints and coatings they protect against discoloration and wear. Adhesive raw materials likewise are used in this segment, although they further are involved in the production of shoes and motor vehicles, and in the building industry. In the field of specialty chemicals, we produce premium polyurethane dispersions, e.g. for cosmetic formulations and hydrophilic prepolymers for medical wound dressings or functional films. Cast elastomers represent the latest addition to the product range. Apart from the conventional fields of application, the CAS business unit continues to develop its portfolio of products and system solutions toward new, lucrative market segments. These efforts are supported by the quality and versatilThis makes it possible for us not only to meet the demands of existing markets, but also to develop new markets offering promising opportunities. Our success along the way is based on intense research in our own laboratories and continuous dialog with our customers. Most of our efforts in this connection are put into eco-friendly coatings that go easier on resources and are efficient in application. We therefore focus on low-solvent, solvent-free or waterborne systems. To improve our adhesives product portfolio, we also target ecologically compatible and user-friendly systems. At the center of all our activities are our customers. Be it polyisocyanates, prepolymers, dispersion polyols or UV systems, they can profit from our many years of experience and the wealth of knowledge of our experts. At the same time, close collaboration with our customers is essential to the development of innovative solutions and new markets. include encapsulation materials for light-emitting diodes and solar systems, or moldings for optical and transparent applications.
polyurethane coatings and adhesives, blocked polyisocyanates for one-component polyurethane baking coatings or hydrophilized polyisocyanates as crosslinkers for water-reducible polyurethane systems: Our products are used wherever crosslinking is used to achieve high resistances and reliable adhesion under efficient conditions. Our solutions are in use today in a variety of applications, such as automotive OEM and refinish and the coating of transportation vehicles, wood, industrial goods and plastics. They are also used in reactive adhesives, textile coatings and anticorrosion coatings. Gloss, leveling, scratch resistance, hardness and flexibility can be precisely adjusted by the choice of polyisocyanate and polyol. Chemical resistance, adhesion, light stability and weatherability are additional properties that can be individually Innovation is our tradition. With the breakthrough discovery of the polyisocyanate-polyaddition process in 1937 by Otto Bayer, Bayer became a pioneer of polyurethane chemistry. 50 years ago, Bayer AG developed the first applications using polyisocyanates for the coatings and adhesives sectors. Polyurethane systems also known as DD coatings have established themselves in a number of applications. We work closely with our customers to systematically advance the state of polyure thane technology. Using market-oriented re sea rch and development, we specifically adapt our product portfolio to the increasingly stringent requirements of our customers. We want to continue our successful journey along this path with you. Our polyisocyanates comprise a broad range of products for one and two-component (1K, 2K) polyurethane systems used in numerous applications. Whether crosslinkers for two-component

adapted to the respective requirements. With a bit of clever formulation, coatings with easy-toclean, soft-touch or reflow properties can also be produced. Our product range of prepolymers comprise aromatic and aliphatic NCO-terminated as well as silane terminated products. With these prepolymers properties of coatings, adhesives and sealants can be varied over a wide range. Typical areas of application include wood coatings, corrosion protection, floor coatings, elastic adhesives in transportation, parquet adhesives, engeneered wood construction, flexible film lamination and sealants. Prepolymers with a low fraction of non-polymerbound components open up formulation options for the productions of reactive polyurethane adhesive and sealants, that are not subject of labelling requirements.

Desmodur VL Family-crosslinkers for solvent-free two-component polyurethane coatings for anti-corrosion and construction applications. Desmoseal S are silane terminated polyurethanes (STPs) which combine properties of polyu r e thanes with those of silicones to give a new class of prepolymers. These prepolymers are primarily designed to act as binders for moisture-curing sealants and elastic adhesives. They are high molecular weight prepolymers consisting of a polyurethane-backbone and a trifunctional silane end group.

Sustainability @ CAS
Bayer is committed to the principles of sustainable development. We want to fulfill this commitment in three areas: products and innovations, business practices and corporate social responsibility. Innovations are the driver of sustainability in the CAS Business Unit. Our raw materials make more sustainable and durable solutions possible in our end users products. This applies especially to greenhouse gas emissions, health protection and energy consumption. In production our priority is a high standard of occupational health and safety as well as energyand resource-saving processes. We focus our developments on advanced product technologies that are safe in their application and provide economic and ecological advantages over the whole value chain from raw materials through processing to the end-of-life. The emphasis is on waterborne products, solvent-free products and those with a high solids content. We are investigating the potential of renewable resources for new high-performance products while also taking ethical standards into account. Our main aim is to conduct our business successfully and sustainably. For us this means achieving commercial success on the basis of sound business models and in a way that is compatible with the needs of our employees and society, protects the environment and preserves our natural resources.
