FASHION DESIGN PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT BRIEF This exercise is a compulsory component of your Raffles application process.

We encourage you to take time to reflect upon your ideas as much as possible, and most importantly to enjoy the wonderful journey upon which you are about to embark as a creative in the design industries. TASK A: Design a contemporary mini-collection on 3 bodies for either daywear or eveningwear using either pencil or black felt-tip pen only. Your inspiration can be from a Western culture, or any other culture in which you are interested; as long as the inspiration is clear and appropriate to your collection. You may wish to be inspired by a historical period from the ancient world (eg., Ancient Egypt or Greece), from Modern times onwards (eg., The Renaissance, the 18th, 19th centuries) or from more contemporary times (eg., Mid-twentieth century). The choice is yours! Please find attached a series of illustrations which demonstrate how you would adapt a garment from Ancient Egypt, a garment from the Renaissance and one from the 1940s in order to kick-start your idea development [Remember: You only need to choose 1 period] Please attach a 250 word description which outlines: a) your inspiration and b) your concept of how you have adapted these fashion ideas from costume or dress history into contemporary fashions. TASK B: Once you have completed your sketches outlined above, create a full-colour fashion illustration in your choice of media (eg., watercolours, inks, gouache or Pantone TM markers) of your favourite design out of the 3 you created in pencil/felt-tip pen. TASK C: Create a mood board on 1 x A3 cardboard where you should place a small fabric sample no larger than 5cm x 5 cm, as well as images from magazines, art books or other publications which help to set the mood or creative direction of your chosen design. You may be as experimental as you wish here, so primary sources such as old photographs, postcards or other artistic ephemera may also serve to support your ideas.
