ILGA International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association Part-time Internship (unpaid), UN Programme, ILGA 2 months

hs Deadline for applications: 22 August 2013 This is an exciting internship in the newly-opened Geneva office of ILGA: the world federation of human rights-based LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex) organizations. The intern will provide assistance to ILGAs programme of work at the United Nations, in particular during the 24th Human Rights Council Session. The intern will also support representatives of ILGAs members while they are in Geneva attending UN or ILGA meetings. It is an excellent opportunity for somebody who has an interest in human rights and LGBTI issues and wants to gain experience in working in the framework of the United Nations on these issues. The internship is for an initial period of two months. The candidate should be available to work for an average of 20 hours per week. The exact working hours can be flexible. During the Human Rights Council (HRC) 9 to 27 September 2013 the candidate would be expected to work full-time. Main tasks: Assisting ILGAs UN Programme staff in their work at and with the UN Attending the 24th Session of the HRC and assisting in communication of council events to ILGAs members and the public. Carry out organisational and administrative tasks together with the UN Programme staff. Conducting research related to the UN human rights mechanisms and how they can be applied to protect the human rights of LGBTI persons. Main requirements: Knowledge of the UN System and, in particular of the workings and procedures of the HRC (e.g. UPR) and the OHCHR, in relation to the developments affecting LGBTI rights and the LGBTI movement. A relevant Bachelors or Masters degree Fluent English and conversational French. Other UN language skills an asset, especially Spanish. Benefits: This is an unpaid internship. However, ILGA offers luncheon vouchers for days worked and will cover local public transport costs. The successful intern will be accredited to the HRC and have opportunities to meet with representatives of LGBTI organisations from around the world, in particular from countries that are in focus at the 24th Session of the HRC.
