April 19, 24, 26, May 3. Ethnographic write up TBA (most likely to be around the 10th of May). Research Proposal The points mentioned below must be included in your research proposal. Relevant material dealing with designing and carrying out research has begun being uploaded on LMS. While all of you should skim through it, those of you who havent taken QRM should make it a point to read it thoroughly. 1. A title (that gives the reader a good idea of what the research is about) 2. A research question (and if needed, sub questions that feed into it). The research question will tell the reader what you want to find out/explore. 3. Background information/context of the research question (if needed) (that can, among other things, help highlight why you want to carry out this research). 4. Literature review: (What other work have been done on the phenomena that you are studying? How does that work feed into your work? [For instance, do you discover gaps in the literature that you hope to fulfill through your research? Does it help you identify domains to explore through interviewing? Do other people draw upon particular theoretical frameworks that you wish to test? Etc.]. The point is not to end up with a section that is merely descriptive, that is, that merely summarizes all the work done to date, but to use it to highlight the significance that work has for your own work [in terms of methodology, theory, justification of research, as appropriate]. 5. Aims/Significance. Whats the point of doing this research? What contribution can it make? 6. Methodology: what kind of sampling will you do? what research tools will you use? Justify their use. Illustrate what kind of

information these tools will generate and how that information will feed into the larger research question. In case of participant observation: mention the sites where it will take place, and examples of things you hope to observe. In case of unstructured interviewing: write down the main question you will start the interview off with, along with a set of probes that relate to some domains you already know you want to explore. In case of semi-structured interviewing: explain the process through which youve identified the domains to be explored and attach an interview guide (with probes) that reflect those domains. 7. Ethical Issues 8. Problems and limitations 9. Reference list
