Is Yaz Harmful? In 2011, two important studies focused on drospirenone and its effects on the development of blood clot-related health complications. All birth control pills make it more likely for women to develop blood clots, but the question was whether or not drospirenone led to an unusually high risk factor. The studies came to some notable conclusions: A study in the British Medical Journal looked at claims data in the United States for women between ages 15 to 44 who had taken a COC. The researchers were interested in the effects of drospirenone on venous thromboembolism, a lifethreatening disease that involves either deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, or both. Ultimately, the study found that the risk of non-fatal venous thromboembolism among users of oral contraceptives containing drospirenone seems to be around twice that of users of oral contraceptives containing levonorgestrel. The second study, also in the British Medical Journal, examined the risk of developing venous thromboembolism when taking Yaz (or other COCs with drospirenone). The results showed that use of the drospirenone contraceptive was associated with a threefold higher risk of non-fatal idiopathic venous thromboembolism compared with levonorgestrel use. Yaz FDA Warning In light of the data linking drospirenone-containing birth control pills with life-threatening blood clots, the FDA has changed the labeling on Yaz and warned that patients should be aware of the signs and symptoms of blood clot-related complications. According to an FDA safety warning drospirenone-containing birth control pills may be associated with a higher risk for blood clots than other progestin-containing pills.
