It is with great sadness we announce the passing of
Roger Allan Leroux, loving Husband, Father, Grandfather,
Uncle, Brother, Son and Friend.
Born in Chilliwack, BC November 17, 1946, Roger
moved to Leduc, AB as a toddler, then to Devon, AB
where he started school. When he was seven the family
moved to Creston. Roger attended both elementary and
high school there and was involved in many sports such
as baseball, basketball, hockey and boxing. It was in his
teen years that he met and started dating Sigrid Parnell,
who was 15 at the time. At the age of 17, Roger attended
hairdressing school in Surrey, which he enjoyed, but after
fnishing decided not to pursue it as a career. In 1966 he
moved to 100 Mile House to work in the plywood plant.
In 1968 he married Sigrid Parnell and they made their
home in 100 Mile House where their daughters Tammy
Lynn and Nichole Leigh were both born.
During the years they resided in100 Mile House, Roger
was actively involved in Search and Rescue and belonged
to the Volunteer Fire Department. The family moved to
Meadow Creek in 1976, where Roger and Sigrid bought
the Meadow Creek Caf. After 2 years they sold the caf
and continued to live in Cooper Creek while Roger worked
at Remco Cedar Mill for several years, then Meadow Creek
Cedar for several years.
In the 37 years of living in the Lardeau Valley, he was
actively involved in the events and fundraising of the
Lardeau Valley Community Hall, and spent countless
hours each year developing Glacier Creek Park, which
he loved and enjoyed for many years with his family and
friends. Rogers passion was hunting and fshing with his
grandsons.
In March 2012 Roger was diagnosed with cancer which
took him away from us July 24, 2013. He is survived by his
loving wife of 45 years Sigrid Leroux; daughters Tammy
Berry, Nichole Leroux Bayof (Dan); grandchildren Jared
and Jesse Berry, Lauren, Tyler, and Tyson Bayof; mother
Hazel Leroux; sisters Linda (Grant) Romano, Sandi (Ed)
Barton, and Barb Hanna. Roger was predeceased by his
father Ernie Leroux in May 2011.
We invite relatives and friends to join us for a
Celebration of Life and Gathering on Saturday, August 17,
2013 at the Lardeau Valley Community Hall at 4:00 pm. In
lieu of fowers, a donation to the BC Childrens Hospital or
Hospice Society of North Kootenay Lake, Box 801, Kaslo,
BC V0G 1M0 would be greatly appreciated.

New Life At St. Saviours
Pro-Cathedral In Nelson
Afer consultation from parishioners, the Bishop, an
architect and the City of Nelson, work began last fall on the
renovations for St. Saviours Anglican Church. Te gran-
ite rock exterior was blasted clean, ready for new gutters
and fresh paint on the trim. Te chocolate matte colour was
agreeable to the Heritage Committee. When the autumn
weather brought rain, freezing temperatures and wintery
blizzards, the gusts billowed the plastic protective coverings
of the stucco in great fying fags of defance to change.
By spring 2013, passers-by ofen commented on the pro-
ject especially the stone Baptismal font. It has become a
useful and meaningful sculpture.
Te new addition has created a fne community kitchen,
and clean washrooms. Te east side entryway is elegant,
spacious and wheel chair friendly. When standing be-
tween the historic Nave and the new addition, everyone is
amazed at the authentic look of the transition doors, with
their fnely crafed replicated windows, that swing between
the old and the new. Afer all isnt that what life is about?
Te basement room has been remade into a bright new
space with natural light, where the Food Pantry, and many
other groups of all kinds and purposes are invited to meet.
Te fnal obstacle was the aged and dangerously tee-
tering roof spire. It was erected in the 1930s, but was now
unsafe and had to meet its demise.
Tere are plans for the garden and lawn areas. Where do
we need benches for folks to rest? Who will water a com-
munity green crop garden?
Feelings of joy and contentment emerge with the chan-
ges made to this church building. Te summer tours wel-
come locals and guests to rest in the aura of the stained
glass windows. Te parish purpose statement includes
everyone in their own way to nurture the sacred, seek
truth and bless with Love. May we all be so transformed!
Support For Parents
Who Want To Go Back To School
Some parents with young children are unable to access
or aford the childcare they need to move forward with
their education goals; others are not yet comfortable leav-
ing their children and heading of to school. Support for
parents to go back to school is even more challenging in
rural areas. In the Selkirk College region, three caring or-
ganizations have pooled their resources to remove barriers
and pave the way for learners to succeed.
Partnering Up to Ofer Vital Services
Selkirk has a mission to inspire lifelong learning, trans-
form lives through education and training, and serve our
communities. College partner Columbia Basin Alliance
for Literacy delivers literacy services in communities
throughout the region and Kootenay Family Place pro-
vides vital family services in Castlegar. Together, these
three partners ofer Adult Basic Education upgrading
classes in a location with licensed childcare so parents
can participate while their children are cared for nearby.
A Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy participant enjoys
some fun and games with an instructor.In this innovative
collaboration, Kootenay Family Place makes space avail-
able; Selkirk College instructors bring in resources and
teach, and CBAL funds the childcare. In this program,
everyone wins: parents are introduced gently to time
spent away from their children while benefting from high
quality, academic instruction in accredited courses; family
literacy foundations are established with parents of young
children; vibrant family programming is rooted in the
midst of a valued community centre.
Parents of young children who felt formal education was
out of their grasp have experienced transformative chan-
ges in their lives. It is the comfort aforded by the unique
structure of the program that enables the parents to build
confdence, credits and a clearer path toward a career. Te
program is now ofered in three communities.
Positive Feedback from Participants
Charity needed to upgrade in order to re-enter the work-
force but was very hesitant while caring for two children,
one with severe febrile seizures until someone told her
about this program. She completed her upgrades, con-
tinued on to Administrative Skills classes at Selkirk Col-
lege, completed a practicum at Kootenay Family Place and
now has a full time job. She says, Tanks for helping me to
gain the confdence that I needed in order to be successful.

All Breed Championship Dog Show
Te West Kootenay Kennel Club is hosting their 39th
annual All Breed Championship Dog Show, Obedience and
Rally Obedience trials. Tis years show will be held at the
Castlegar Community Church Field (the old Kinnaird
Middle School) in Castlegar from Friday, August 16 to
Sunday, August 18.
Four All Breed Shows will be held starting Friday, Au-
gust 16 running through to Sunday, August 18. Tere
will be two shows Friday starting at 8 am and again at 1
pm. Saturday and Sunday there will be one show per day
starting at 8 am. Four Obedience and four Rally Obedi-
ence trials will be held Saturday and Sunday starting at
8 am. Saturday evening will be the famous bring your
own meat BBQ. Many wonderful raf e prizes and silent
auction items will be ofered throughout the shows and
will be given out at the BBQ.
Te public is invited to come out and watch all the dogs
working. Tere is no charge for spectators. Confusion Taco
will be cooking their delicious tacos and other goodies for
everyone to enjoy for the weekend. Come and check out
the vendor booths. Please leave your pets at home where
they will be comfortable out of the heat. Only dogs en-
tered in the show will be allowed on the show grounds.
