Switzerland: Country and Population


Country
Geographical situation: Switzerland is situated between the 45th and the 48th
degrees of latitude and the 5th and the 11th meridians of longitude. Switzerland
borders on the following countries: Germany 346 km, France 572 km, Italy 734 km,
Austria 165 km and Liechtenstein 41 km.
Of the total surface area of 41,285 km2, 74.5% are productive (30.8% forests,
36.9% arable land and 6.8% residential areas) and 25.5% are covered by water,
unproductive land or bear no vegetation.53
The largest agglomerations (number of habitants) are: 2 Zurich 1,185,214; Geneva 527,764; Basel 501,285; Bern 352,470; Lausanne 334,908; Lucerne 209,224;
Saint Gall 150,012; Winterthur 139,373; and Lugano 136,414.

Population
Resident population: 7,952,555, including 22.8% foreigners.
Change in permanent resident population 19801990: +6.6%, 19902000:
+6.7%, 20002011: +10.4%.
Age groups: 0 to 19 years 20.6%, 20 to 64 years 62.2%, 65 years and over 17.2%.
Religions: 3 Roman Catholic 41.8%, Protestant 35.3%, Moslems 4.3%, other 3.2%,
none 11.1%, not reported 4.3%.
Employment: 8 no. of people in work 4,714,104 or 59.3% of resident population.
Breakdown: 3.5% in forestry and agriculture; 22.8% in industry, crafts and construction; 73.7% in services sector. No. of non-Swiss in labor force: 1,318,112 or
28.0% of the active population.

Energy sources54 include: oil (44.8%), nuclear fuel (23.1%), water (11.3%), gas
(10.6%) and other (10.1%). Per capita costs for energy are 3,879 Swiss francs, or
5.6% of GDP per capita (2000: 5.7%). Foreign dependence is 78.5%. The main
energy consumers are transportation (33.7%), households (29.8%), industry
(18.8%) and services (16.3%). Per capita waste58: 961 kg, of which 357 kg per
person are recycled.

Form of government: The Swiss Confederation (founded in 1291) has been a


Federal Republic since 1848 and is composed of 26 cantons, of which 6 are halfcantons. The government, or Federal Council, is a collegial board consisting of seven
members. Parliament consists of two chambers with equal rights: the Council of
States (cantonal representation) with 46 members and the National Council (representation body of the people) with 200 members.
Political groups: The 200 seats of the National Council (representative body of
the people) and the 46 seats of the Council of States (cantonal representation) are
distributed among the following groups (as of 31 December 2011): Swiss Peoples
Party 56 (National Council)/6 (Council of States), Socialdemocrats 46/11, Christian
Democrats/EPP 31/13, Parliamentary Group FDP-The Liberals 30/11, Green Party
15/2, Green Liberal Party 12/2, BDP fraction 9/1, no group 1/.
