CLOUD CONTROL
DREAM CAVE

OUT NOW
layered strum-alongs occasionally drifting into Flying Nun territory via Simon & Garfunkel. Dream Cave is a continuation of that journey - in an updated Kombi van with David Lynch as a passenger. Alister Wright (vocals, guitar) wanted Dream Cave to sound more like Check Your Head era Beastie Boys. Im not sure I see that connection but theres no mistaking references to the Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo and the ever-present Beach Boys. Best is the Nicks/Buckingham-meets-rave synthesiser of The Smoke, The Feeling, which just sinks nicely down into the boots. Theres also a beautiful intensity in live-recorded Promises. Apparently Wright imagined himself as Roy Orbison trapped in underground grotto, engulfed in claustrophobic dankness. Creepy satisfaction! Even creepier, title track Dream Cave is the result of exploring various cave systems and recording in each (for the perfect reverb) with the final VBs made in one, to magnificent effect.
WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

Im currently loving the ethereal harmonies and drifting anthems on Dojo Rising, from the sophomore effort which was made during a two month stint in a Kent studio, nearly 17,000 Km from their American homeland, with Barny Barnicott (Kasabian/Arctic Monkeys). On paper, Cloud Control could be from the Fleet Foxes/Grizzly Bear camp. Dream Cave is not just a result of exposure to peers. In fact it comes from a period of seclusion and intellectual self-persecution. Debut Bliss Release had some perfectly

REWIND OF THE WEEK

DE LA SOUL
3 FEET HIGH AND RISING
were drawing from old school rap and funk. De La Soul were gentler and more eclectic; taking in not only funk and soul, but also pop, jazz, reggae and psychedelia. 3 Feet High and Rising proved that rappers didnt have to talk about the streets to succeed, weaving clever wordplay and deft rhymes across two dozen tracks. De La Soul broke down boundaries all over the LP, moving easily from the groovy my-philosophy intro The Magic Number to an intelligent, caring inner-city vignette named Ghetto Thang and the endof-innocence tale Jenifa Taught Me (Derwins Revenge). Thinly disguised under a layer of humour, their lyrical themes ranged from true love (Eye Know) to the destructive power of drugs (Say No Go) to Daisy Age philosophy (Tread Water). 3 Feet High and Rising not only heralded the Daisy Age (DA Inner Sound Yall) of hip-hop, but significantly influenced the beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop. Without a doubt an absolute classic, and deservedly so!

FILM OF THE WEEK

BYZANTIUM
directed by NEIL JORDAN Starring SAOIRSE RONAN, GEMMA ARTERTON, CALEB LANDRY JONES

From District 9 director Neill Blomkamp comes, the post-apocalyptic tale of two worlds: the very rich and the very poor. Matt Damon (cue Team America references) bridges the gap between the high and low classes in order to help those in need. A sci-fi thriller that will no doubt draw comparisons to Blomkamps debut feature.

GISELLE
GENERAL RELEASE

Director Toa Fraser (No. 2, Dean Spanley) brings The Royal New Zealand Ballet to the big screen, capturing their acclaimed production of the two-act classic Giselle (first performed in 1841). Filmed over two nights at Aucklands Aotea Centre, the film is collaboration between the ballet company and the NZ Film Commission for a real behind the scenes look.

While Neil Jordans last film, 2009s beguiling, wholly underrated seanymph tale Ondine, stopped short of marking a full-fledged return to the realm of fantastique where hes notably contributed with Company of Wolves and Interview with the Vampire, Byzantium is such a return and his most satisfying and cohesive work in years. Adapted from her own stage play, Moira Buffinis screenplay offers Jordan ample wiggle room to take liberties with traditional representations of bloodsucking lore. Conspicuously absent are references to stakes, garlic, sunlightaversion, etc. And instead of fangs, the films protagonists - Clara (Gemma Arterton) and Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan), a nomadic mother-daughter pair of sucrients whove been on the run for 200 years - use their erect thumbnails to draw blood from their

victims necks. Its a brutal, inventive method of dispatch that also proves to be more visually dynamic than the ol teeth-to-the-jugular. The densely threaded narrative occasionally gets bogged down during the info-dump flashbacks establishing Clara and Eleanors Napoleonic-era origins. But Jordans customarily stylish and elegant direction carries the film, and hes aided by the leads outstanding performances, Sean Bobbits exquisitely lush cinematography, and deeply atmospheric coastal locations that fully realise the supernatural, moodily poetic possibilities of Byzantiums world. Its part Gothic noir, part coming-of-age fable, instilled with refreshingly feminist leanings and topped off with decapitated heads, bloody waterfalls and a dollop of maternal ferocity.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY

STOKER : THE BRAND NEW HORROR THAT S GOT LINKS TO THE PAST. Penned from the hand of Wentworth Miller yes, the handsome fellow from Prison Break fame and directed by South Korean horror filmmaker Park Chan-wook, this is not your typical Hollywood horror. Described by Park as a slightly twisted love story and a coming-of-age tale, Stoker is a psychological thriller focusing on the darkest recesses and impulsive desires lurking inside the human mind. When India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) loses her father Richard (Dermot Mulroney) in a tragic accident on her 18th birthday, her quiet life on the familys secluded estate is shattered. She finds herself drawn to her fathers long-lost brother, Charlie (Matthew Goode), who unexpectedly arrives for the funeral and decides to stay on with her and her emotionally unstable mother, Evie (Nicole Kidman). While the teen initially mistrusts her charming but mysterious uncle, he fascinates her and she begins to realise how much they have in common. Written under the pseudonym Ted Foulke, because Miller was convinced no-one would take his work seriously, the TV stars script eventually landed on the 2010 Black List, the prestigious unofficial list of the best unproduced films available. Openly drawing on Bram Stokers famous novel Dracula, Miller makes it clear this is not a tale about vampires, but draws on the fundamental aspects of a classic horror film. A stoker is one who stokes, which also ties in nicely with the narrative, he explains. The jumping-off point is actually Hitchcocks Shadow of a Doubt. So, thats where we begin and then we take it in a very, very different direction. Although a number of top directors expressed interest in this unique script, production company Scott Frees first choice was Park, a noted auteur. But as a screenwriter himself, there was doubt he would agree to work on a piece that wasnt his own. However, Park was drawn to the films unconventional and tautly woven story, as well as its severely restricted physical world. The constant tension almost suffocates, he explains. Something is about to explode, like a kettle of boiling water with the lid on tight. A story that takes place in a confined space becomes a small universe unto itself. I also liked the fact that it was not a story that revolves around dialogue, the director continues. That was an advantage for my first English-language film. My Korean language films have not been dialogue-oriented either, so I was already comfortable with telling the story in a more visual way. Working on such a complex film with a non-English speaker at the helm was never a problem for Australian natives and leading ladies Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska. Hes completely there, says Wasikowska. Its interesting because hes such a visionary, and often with visionaries you kind of have to compromise maybe whats best for acting because of a certain shot or the way they want things to be done. Park, though, always tries to make it primarily about whats best for the acting, and how he can help you, and what you need to give the performance you want to give. The 23-year-old star, who is well-known for her leading role in Alice in Wonderland, takes a dark turn as India, exploring a far more sexual and aggressive character than some of her previous work. We definitely also wanted to make her a real girl: Even though shes very complex and mysterious, shes also very much a young girl who has fantasies and desires. I think with a lot of darker material the only time it hits me is the first time I read it. Often Ill read something and go, Oh wow, thats really heavy, and then as I get more and more into it I forget about it so I dont really feel it in that way. Kidman likens working with Park to the late great Stanley Kubrick, who she collaborated with on another sexual thriller, Eyes Wide Shut. Having watched Parks Cannes award-winning The Vengeance Trilogy, the actress was shock at the graphic nature of the flicks, but was strangely drawn to it a central dichotomy in Stoker. Park is such a gentle man and yet he makes these amazing films and he has these incredible ideas that come out of him. There are very strong intellectual ideas that he puts forward in his films, she says. And its the same with Stoker. He creates a very tense atmosphere in what is, on one level, a thriller that builds and builds, but its actually about evil and the genesis of evil. WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER

NZ Post Launch YouShop UK

NZ Post have launched YouShop UK, the second parallel-import enabling tool from the company after the original (USA-based) YouShop service launched last year. YouShop UK lets you buy items from stores based in the UK as if you lived there, providing you with an address in Middlesex that you can then use when ordering items from stores that would otherwise not ship to New Zealand (including Play.com, Blockbuster, and even certain items on the likes of Amazon.co.uk.) Parcels forwarded on by the service cost from $17.25 for a 500g parcel (YouShop, like many freight companies, use Dimensional Weight to determine shipping costs), with multiple parcel discounts and repacking options available in certain situations.

PREVIEW: PUPPETEER
Usually, when you talk about a game, you drop in terms like first-person shooter or zombie survival horror and everyone is on the same page. However, Puppeteer is one of those games that is elusive in genre. And yet, this mysterious enigma is what makes this charming new game from Sony Japan so totally captivating. Puppeteer looks like a family-friendly outing, but the plot that unravels before you in the opening sequences wouldnt be out of place in a horror movie. Our hero in the story, Kutaro, is a joyous little boy who suddenly gets his head ripped off by the terrifying Moon Bear King - an evil menace who enjoys kidnapping the delicate souls of children. With Kutaros human body brutally beheaded and casually discarded, he is now a disfigured wooden puppet, forced to guard the evil Kings nightmarish castle for all eternity. Delightful isnt it? Despite the cutesy name and stunning, colourful visuals, Puppeteer is probably one of the darkest games Ive played on the PS3. And I recently played The Last of Us. It is steeped in the macabre and drizzled with sinister undertones, but the game is absolutely brilliant because of it. Put crudely, the game is a platform adventure. But in much the same way as LittleBigPlanet captivated hearts and minds, Puppeteer is so much more than that. Here, worlds are crafted before your very eyes as if youre in some sort of organic playful pantomime. As different set pieces slide onto your on-screen stage, environments continuously transform to deliver wondrous new creations. In front of these deliriously beautiful level designs, Kutaro is equally captivating. Because of his head-related mishap, he can find and wear other heads to replace his own, such as a hamburger head, a bleached skull, or a creepy spiders head. Each one gifts Kutaro unique powers, which can aid in his quest; for example the knights helmet is handy in battle. However his cranium is perched perilously on his little body and if he goes without a head for too long, he dies. Puppeteer is going to surprise people. It even makes newly announced next-gen PS4 games look bland and unoriginal with its artistic integrity; look for the full to arrive in New Zealand on September 11th.

TREAT HER LIKE A LADI

THE KIWI SINGER BRINGS A MORE MATURE SOUND TO HER NEW RECORD. Patience. Thats the number-one thing thats essential in the life of Ladi6 (aka Karoline Tamati) and having spent the last three years or so working on her highly-anticipated third solo album, its a good thing shes got plenty of it. Its been a busy few years for Ladi6. In 2010, the 30-year-old released her gold-certified sophomore album The Liberation of. Produced by her partner Parks (Brent Parks) and Sebastian Weiss of German hip-hop group Blumentopf, the album saw the release of her platinum-certified single Like Water. It earned her the attention of British critics, with them calling her One to Watch. Following its massive success not to mention a Taite Music Prize and some extensive touring with the likes of Katchafire and Kora Ladi6 was ready for round three. Having locked in some recording sessions at Revolver Studios in Auckland, she also decided to pack up her bags and head stateside to record her new album, titled Automatic. Never one to rest on her laurels, Ladi6 set her sights big and got hold of Waajeed, a Detroit-born music producer and one half of the hip-hop and R&B group Platinum Pied Pipers. We contacted him from New Zealand and Skyped to talk through the project, she explains. Then we flew over to make a few tracks with him in his studio of choice in the D. The D being his hometown and that choice was Studio A where the likes of Common, Jay-Z and Mary J Blige have all recorded throughout their careers. It was so much fun, Ladi6 says. A new and exciting experience. We went over there late last year and again this year in May to April. It was busy though the trips were very much work, work, work. But we did do some iconic Detroit/US things like shop at an outlet mall, go to a drive-in movie, eat cornbread and visit the Motown museum. With most of the writing for her third release done in the studios, Ladi6 says making it spontaneously in the studio has its challenges; it adds a lot of pressure. Described as a beautiful amalgamation of soul and futuristic hip-hop complemented by Ladi6s hypnotic vocals, she says the aim was to always progress onwards and upwards in terms of both sound and production. The style is based in hip-hop and soul, but still I think veers off into extreme tangents of both genres. The writing was mostly done in the studio, going in with nothing and emerging at the end with two or three tracks at a time. Parks really was at the forefront of the production with Waajeed, and from there the tracks really grew into songs. Calling it the best record weve made, but certainly not the best we will ever make, fans are promised to hear a more mature, confident, selfassured Ladi6 then in previous records. We are still growing, learning, healing, vibrating, she says. Its a real humbling and motivating experience to realise that the best is yet to come still. But after the huge success of number two, did she feel theres an expectation to live up to? Short answer, no.

NEW ALBUM: AUTOMATIC OUT: FRI 16 AUG SEE HER LIVE: LADI6 - THE AUTOMATIC TAKEOVER TOUR WED 14AUG 10PM, BETTYS BAR, WELLINGTON THU 15AUG 11AM,DEATH RAY RECORDS, WELLINGTON THU 15AUG 7PM, THE GOLDEN DAWN TAVERN, AUCKLAND FRI 16AUG 8AM, CONCH RECORDS, AUCKLAND FRI 16AUG 9PM, WINNIE BAGOES, CHRISTCHURCH SAT 17AUG 12PM, PENNY LANE RECORDS, CHRISTCHURCH

I put my own pressures on myself, she explains. If I also took into consideration everyone elses expectations, Id go crazy. Fans no doubt heard the product of her blood, sweat and tears on the road when Ladi6, Parks, Julien Dyne and Brandon Haru joined forces with @Peace for a national tour earlier this year and theyll be ready for round two when the album is released on August 16, with a number of listening parties in the four main centres later this month before Ladi6 departs our shores once more.
