Bad Jelly the Witch by Spike Milligan. If you werent a musician, what would you be? A martial arts instructor. Ultimate festival line-up? Sun Ra Arkestra, Cecil Taylor Unit, Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman. Who would play you in a film? Chuck Norris. How do you discover new music? My discerning friends bust it on me. Worst job youve had? Improvising a musical accompaniment to a debate/discussion over the arts portfolios by the major political parties spokes people at BATS theatre in the lead up to an election, and realising, as the audience and spokes people became increasingly infuriated, that I was actually the pawn in an anarchist plot to undermine the whole evening. Which song do you wish you wrote? Going Down the Road Feeling Bad Elizabeth Cotten. Biggest fear? Not being ready or able to accept the moments of me dying. First gig in attendance? layered strum-alongs occasionally drifting into Flying Nun territory via Simon & Garfunkel. Dream Cave is a continuation of that journey - in an updated Kombi van with David Lynch as a passenger. Alister Wright (vocals, guitar) wanted Dream Cave to sound more like Check Your Head era Beastie Boys. Im not sure I see that connection but theres no mistaking references to the Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo and the ever-present Beach Boys. Best is the Nicks/Buckingham-meets-rave synthesiser of The Smoke, The Feeling, which just sinks nicely down into the boots. Theres also a beautiful intensity in live-recorded Promises. Apparently Wright imagined himself as Roy Orbison trapped in underground grotto, engulfed in claustrophobic dankness. Creepy satisfaction! Even creepier, title track Dream Cave is the result of exploring various cave systems and recording in each (for the perfect reverb) with the final VBs made in one, to magnificent effect.

A demo came to the attention of Stetsasonics Prince Paul, who then went on to produce their debut album 3 Feet High and Rising. At the time of its release in 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising was hailed as the future of hip-hop. With its colourful neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, along with the trios low-key and clever rhymes, the album sounded like nothing else in hip hop. GENERAL RELEASE
From District 9 director Neill Blomkamp comes, the post-apocalyptic tale of two worlds: the very rich and the very poor. Matt Damon (cue Team America references) bridges the gap between the high and low classes in order to help those in need. A sci-fi thriller that will no doubt draw comparisons to Blomkamps debut feature.
GISELLE
GENERAL RELEASE
Director Toa Fraser (No. 2, Dean Spanley) brings The Royal New Zealand Ballet to the big screen, capturing their acclaimed production of the two-act classic Giselle (first performed in 1841). Filmed over two nights at Aucklands Aotea Centre, the film is collaboration between the ballet company and the NZ Film Commission for a real behind the scenes look.
While Neil Jordans last film, 2009s beguiling, wholly underrated seanymph tale Ondine, stopped short of marking a full-fledged return to the realm of fantastique where hes notably contributed with Company of Wolves and Interview with the Vampire, Byzantium is such a return and his most satisfying and cohesive work in years. Adapted from her own stage play, Moira Buffinis screenplay offers Jordan ample wiggle room to take liberties with traditional representations of bloodsucking lore. Conspicuously absent are references to stakes, garlic, sunlightaversion, etc. And instead of fangs, the films protagonists - Clara (Gemma Arterton) and Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan), a nomadic mother-daughter pair of sucrients whove been on the run for 200 years - use their erect thumbnails to draw blood from their
victims necks. Its a brutal, inventive method of dispatch that also proves to be more visually dynamic than the ol teeth-to-the-jugular. The densely threaded narrative occasionally gets bogged down during the info-dump flashbacks establishing Clara and Eleanors Napoleonic-era origins. But Jordans customarily stylish and elegant direction carries the film, and hes aided by the leads outstanding performances, Sean Bobbits exquisitely lush cinematography, and deeply atmospheric coastal locations that fully realise the supernatural, moodily poetic possibilities of Byzantiums world. Its part Gothic noir, part coming-of-age fable, instilled with refreshingly feminist leanings and topped off with decapitated heads, bloody waterfalls and a dollop of maternal ferocity.

PREVIEW: PUPPETEER
Usually, when you talk about a game, you drop in terms like first-person shooter or zombie survival horror and everyone is on the same page. However, Puppeteer is one of those games that is elusive in genre. And yet, this mysterious enigma is what makes this charming new game from Sony Japan so totally captivating. Puppeteer looks like a family-friendly outing, but the plot that unravels before you in the opening sequences wouldnt be out of place in a horror movie. Our hero in the story, Kutaro, is a joyous little boy who suddenly gets his head ripped off by the terrifying Moon Bear King - an evil menace who enjoys kidnapping the delicate souls of children. With Kutaros human body brutally beheaded and casually discarded, he is now a disfigured wooden puppet, forced to guard the evil Kings nightmarish castle for all eternity. Delightful isnt it? Despite the cutesy name and stunning, colourful visuals, Puppeteer is probably one of the darkest games Ive played on the PS3. And I recently played The Last of Us. It is steeped in the macabre and drizzled with sinister undertones, but the game is absolutely brilliant because of it. Put crudely, the game is a platform adventure. But in much the same way as LittleBigPlanet captivated hearts and minds, Puppeteer is so much more than that. Here, worlds are crafted before your very eyes as if youre in some sort of organic playful pantomime. As different set pieces slide onto your on-screen stage, environments continuously transform to deliver wondrous new creations. In front of these deliriously beautiful level designs, Kutaro is equally captivating. Because of his head-related mishap, he can find and wear other heads to replace his own, such as a hamburger head, a bleached skull, or a creepy spiders head. Each one gifts Kutaro unique powers, which can aid in his quest; for example the knights helmet is handy in battle. However his cranium is perched perilously on his little body and if he goes without a head for too long, he dies. Puppeteer is going to surprise people. It even makes newly announced next-gen PS4 games look bland and unoriginal with its artistic integrity; look for the full to arrive in New Zealand on September 11th.

Game Informer isreportingthat several sources have confirmed the existence of a new Android-powered gaming console in the works at online retail giant Amazon.com. Furthermore, the device - which wasnt named - will release this year; likely in time for the famous (in the US)Black Fridaysales (November 29th this year), and it will have its own dedicated controller. Amazon already sell several Android-powered devices (the Kindle Fire range), and already have both the ecosystem and expertise to deliver apps straight to users through the Amazon App Store. If true, chances are well find out about the new console very soon.

I put my own pressures on myself, she explains. If I also took into consideration everyone elses expectations, Id go crazy. Fans no doubt heard the product of her blood, sweat and tears on the road when Ladi6, Parks, Julien Dyne and Brandon Haru joined forces with @Peace for a national tour earlier this year and theyll be ready for round two when the album is released on August 16, with a number of listening parties in the four main centres later this month before Ladi6 departs our shores once more.
