The biogas
experience a key
energy source?
There are around 88 biogas
plants currently in the UK, but
most are small-scale and are
used to generate electricity or
provide heating for factories
or farm estates.
Roughly 100 million tonnes
of material is produced in the
UK each year which could be
used to generate biogas, but
plants are extremely expen-
sive to set up.
The October 3rd Conference
in London will consider key
facilities such as the Prince of
Wales biogas plant just
outside Poundbury. This is
projected to use around
41,000 tonnes of maize, grass
silage and food waste each
year. Among those sending
waste to this plant are Dorset
Cereals and the popular
House of Dorchester
chocolate factories.
Around a fifth of the gas which
is generated onsite will also
be used to create electricity
for around 500 homes and for
the plant itself, which is being
run by a consortium called JV
Energen.

T
he world's largest offshore wind farm, capable of
generating enough electricity for half a million homes, was
officially opened off the UK's south-east coast last month.
Prime Minister David Cameron opened the 630-megawatt
London Array project, which was developed by E.ON, DONG
Energy and Abu Dhabi's Masdar and produced its first
electricity from all its turbines in April 2013.
The 1.5 billion wind farm, built 12 miles offshore, contains
175 turbines and solidifies Britain's position at the top of the
world's offshore wind league table. Britain is banking on
offshore wind technology to help it reach legally-binding
targets to cut carbon emissions. It is aiming to develop 18
gigawatts (GW) of power from wind by 2020.
The project will be one of the topics under discussion at the
CHP/Renewables Conference & Exhibition on October 3rd.
The venue is located at Prince Philip House at 3 Carlton

historic Grade I listed
building, overlooking The

Fracking issues
The Chief Secretary to the
Treasury, Danny Alexander,
has revealed details from a
British Geological Survey
report which states that UK
shale gas reserves are
double the level previously
thought.
However, Britain is unlikely
to proceed with harvesting
these resources for the
immediate future, with
environmental groups tying
up drilling projects in law-
suits, and communities
uneasy at the prospect of
fracking.
The latest research from
Harvard on Americas shale
revolution claims that output
there could almost triple,
bringing almost incalculable
economic benefits.

UK Government Energy Bill will be under fire
at Londons leading CHP/Renewables
Conference on October 3rd
O
ne of the burning issues under consideration at October's Conference is the controversy
surrounding the Government's latest energy policy. As Claverton's Head of Energy
Research, Dave Andrews, puts it during a recent interview with UK Power News:
"The UK Government's Energy plan involves a combination of subsidising big users to
reduce their demand, and to get the power generating companies to bring mothballed gas
plants back into service to deal with any spikes in energy consumption.
The fact is - large sections of the UK's coal-fired and nuclear capacity are slated to be closed
over the next five years, but the margins are too small and the uncertainties too great to persuade
the power sector to build the necessary replacements. It is widely reckoned that 110bn of new
investment will be required to put things right, he explains.
The establishment of a minimum price for wind farm generation should lead to the construction
of some new capacity, offshore at least. But deep-seated opposition continues to make further
onshore development almost prohibitive.
He concludes: In the UK suppliers have extracted a heavy price at 155 per megawatt hour,
it is three times the going rate for electricity generation, falling to only 135 in todays prices by
2018-19. This explodes the myth that a new renewables regime would deliver affordable
energy, and indeed a lower price than current arrangements. In fact, this fixes high prices into the
system for years to come.
Right now the Energy Bill attracts considerable criticism. The private sector is being asked to
finance not a market opportunity but a politically determined goal decarbonised electricity
supply. The consequent tensions are proving impossible to reconcile. Ministers have admitted a
risk of power shortages in the UK within three years had been identified, but have insisted the
Government will not let that happen.
The power industry regulator Ofgem warned last month that the chances of Britain experiencing
a blackout had risen sharply and that industrial users could be asked to shut down factories at
peak times. Things look serious, concludes Dave Andrews.
I
BERDROLA, through its UK subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables, has successfully
completed the expansion of Whitelee wind farm in Scotland, which has become one of the
most iconic in Europe. Located south of Glasgow, before its expansion Whitelee already had
the largest installed capacity of any wind farm in Europe, and has now increased its capacity
from 322 MW to 539 MW, thus consolidating itself as one of the largest wind power facilities in
the world.
This rise in capacity has been achieved through the installation of 75 wind turbines
manufactured by the French company Alstom: 69 ECO 100 wind turbines, each with a capacity
of 3 MW and 6 ECO 74 turbines, each with a capacity of 1.67 MW. Annual output at Whitelee
will be equivalent to the electricity consumption of more than 300,000 Scottish households and
will prevent the emission of 840,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
This facility has become a symbol throughout Scotland of the acceptance of wind power as
an engine for progress and job creation. Some 350 IBERDROLA and local suppliers
employees have worked on the expansion of the wind farm and the full-time workforce
assigned to operation and maintenance has reached 49 people, making it one of the largest in
the world. A key factor in Whitelee becoming a benchmark wind farm in the UK is the success
of the Whitelee Windfarm Visitor Centre which has been visited by 270,000 people since it was
first opened in 2009. Built within the wind farm complex, the centre includes a range of
interactive displays and exhibitions. A separate learning hub, staffed by Glasgow Science
Centre experts, caters for school visits.

are asked
Energy suppliers are being
enlisted into Britain's war on
drugs, with new proposals
calling on them to hunt down
illegal cannabis farms costing
households 70m a year in
stolen electricity.
Proposals by Ofgem have
suggested that UK energy
companies could be fined or
even lose their licence if they
fail to investigate cases in the
UK.
The industry detects 25,000
cases of electricity theft a
year, and estimates it costs
consumers a total of 200m
or 7 per household.
Ofgem reports that a third of
all stolen electricity is used for
cannabis farms across the
country.
The farms use up to 40
times more electricity than
normal households, with a
typical farm of 500 plants
needing around 80 lights
switched on for at least 12
hours.
Between 2011 & 2012 around
a million cannabis plants
were seized by the
authorities. Police analysts
report that organised crime
gangs now see growing the
drug as a low risk, highly
profitable business.

istributed energy storage (DES) is set to become a major growth sector according to Moixa
Technology, an EU pioneer of smart direct current (DC) technologies and MASLOW smart
storage systems for powering peak demand.
Maintaining electricity supplies during peak demand presents grid operators with several
challenges aimed at keeping the lights on in the UK.
In a bid to help maintain grid stability, by matching power generation to energy demand, the
UK Governments Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is currently reviewing UK
energy storage demonstrator proposals in a 17m procurement competition. Moixa has
submitted a bid to install MASLOW storage technology across 750 homes.
Leading the way in UK energy storage systems, MASLOW is a DES meter attached storage
system developed by Moixa. The technology helps reduce peak demand and lower energy bills
by shifting DC (direct current) loads from lighting, communications and electronic devices, to bat-
teries charged during low tariff times, from local renewable sources such as solar PV, or at times
of excess wind supply.
With the continued growth of DC demand, MASLOW has the potential to improve the business
case and commercial opportunities for deploying grid-scale battery systems, and deliver end
user efficiencies and resilience.
Simon Daniel CEO Moixa commented: The volatility of solar and wind resources has created
negative electricity prices and renewable curtailment in parts of Europe. UK distribution network
operators face similar issues and considerable infrastructure upgrade costs, to reduce voltage
issues caused by rising solar PV adoption, which could otherwise lead to local blackouts.
or lost renewable revenue.
The UK currently has a fifth of
the electric generator export
market globally, marginally
ahead of its nearest rival
China.
Diesel or bi-fuel generating-
sets are often used as backup
or emergency power when
the mains system fails, or to
provide energy in remote
areas off-grid.
In 2012 the UK generator
market shipped 1.29bn
worth of sets around the
world, with the majority of
those exports coming from
the sale of diesel-powered
generators, according to the
Association of Manufacturers
of Power generating Systems
(AMPS). This is the key trade
association which represents
the manufacturers.
The figures are the latest
boost to the manufacturing
industry, which has seen a
most welcome and stunning
resurgence, according to
economists.
Componentry remains
important. Overall sales
include systems such as the
fuel supply unit, a constant
engine speed regulator
(governor) and a generator
voltage regulator, cooling and
exhaust systems, and
lubrication systems.
Aggrekos new
LinkTower deal
T
he lighting tower manufacturer, Italy-based Tower
Light S.r.l., has confirmed an initial order for twelve of
its LinkTower lighting sets from the temporary power
rental giant Aggreko.
The LinkTowers will be used for perimeter lighting at
Aggrekos power plant project in Mozambique. The power
plant is located on the Mozambique & South African border at
Ressano Garcia, 90 kilometres north-west of Maputo.
It is powered by natural gas from the Temane gas fields in
Mozambique and its output is injected into the national grids of
Mozambique and South Africa. The power plant began
operations in 2012, and will continue to supply power until July
2014.
Aggreko selected the LinkTower principally because up to
four units can be safely connected together resulting in a row
of powerful lighting systems all from a single power source,
mains or generator, resulting in a wide area can being
properly illuminated from just one generator.
Commenting on this purchase, Aggrekos Ray McElhinney
told UKPN: We have, in the past, installed street type lighting
poles around the perimeter. As we are a temporary power
provider we were looking for something that we could install
quickly and also remove and reuse after we decommissioned
our plants.
Towerlight was chosen as thei LinkTower was exactly what
we were looking for as most other suppliers could only provide
a standard lighting tower with a generator installed which we
didnt require as we have enough generation.
Aggreko plc is the world's largest temporary power
generation company and a major supplier of temperature con-
trol equipment, with its headquarters located in Glasgow. It
has a fleet of more than 17,500 power generators and 194
service centres in 47 countries and customers in over 100

Alstom has been awarded a contract to retrofit intermediate pressure (IP) turbines at West
Burton and Cottam coal-fired power stations. The retrofit will improve the efficiency and extend
the life of turbines at the two EDF Energy power stations.
West Burton and Cottam power stations are both rated at 2,000 MW and are located in
Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands.
The contract entails replacing the inner cylinder and fitting a new rotor and blades on Cottam 2
and West Burton 1. The work will improve the heat rate, reset the life of the major IP turbine com-
ponents, and ensure lower maintenance costs for the remainder of their life.
Steve Jones, Vice President Alstom Power Thermal Services, said: Weve already successful-
ly carried out retrofits on both low pressure and high pressure turbines at both stations and look
forward to continuing our relationship with EDF as we help make their turbines more efficient and
reduce their maintenance costs.
The work is due to be completed in Spring and Summer of 2014, with both turbines being
installed within existing planned outage windows. The West Burton power stations are a pair of
power stations on the River Trent near Retford, in Nottinghamshire, England, located between
Bole to the north and Sturton le Steeple to the south. One is a coal-fired power station, which was
commissioned in 1968, and the second is a combined cycle gas turbine power station, due to be
commissioned in 2011. Both stations are owned and operated by EDF Energy.
The site is the furthest north of
series of power stations in the Trent
valley, being 3.5 miles downstream
of the Cottam power stations. The
Sheffield to Lincoln Line supplies
the station with coal. A 600 million
1,270 MWe CCGT power
station,running on natural gas, has
been built next to the coal-fired sta-
tion.
The site supplies electricity to
around 1.5 million homes. A new 12
mile-long gas pipeline is being built
to link to the local National Gas
Transmission System based at
Grayingham in Lincolnshire.
Around 1,000 people are involved
in the construction. The plant will
consist of three 430 MW gas
turbines each with a heat recovery
steam generator.
UK companies feel that to
renewable generation is
delivering strong growth for
the onsite renewables sector.
Their primary aims are to
drive down energy bills and
take advantage of feed-in
tariff incentives.
The biggest increase in
independent generation last
year came from agricultural
businesses, where 347 new
energy projects represented a
74% increase on 2011,
generating more than 22m of
revenue for the agricultural
sector.
An analyst for

The power behind
the lights at the F1
Singapore Grand
Prix
If you were lucky enough to see the 2012 F1 Singapore
Grand Prix - then you owe ComAp a debit of gratitude. Its
equipment provide key illumination for all the participants.
Genpower generators installed with ComAp control
systems were there shining the spotlights on the worlds top
drivers through three nights of practice, qualifying and
throughout the race.
The 60-lap race, which took place last September 2012,
was located in the busy Marina Bay Street Circuit in
Singapore.
Around the track were 24 individual 500 kVA Genpower
generators, powering 1,500 special light projectors around
the 5-km track. The power generated by the fleet of
generators fitted with electronic Volvo Penta engines was
was the same as that needed to illuminate 15 full size
football pitches.
The generators were located in pairs at strategic points
around the track, working in parallel with each other
operating at 60% of the gen-set nominal power, so
regardless of what drama was occurring on track nothing
could knock the show off-course.
A spokesman told UKPN: An event of this magnitude
doesnt just need lighting. Beyond the track 12 further 50
kVA, InteliLiteNT AMF25 controlled Genpower generators
were used to supply monitoring system along the track
while the 500 kVA generators were not running during the
day-time.
To control the power required, Genpowers Managing
Partner Bahadir Celim and his event team chose ComAp s
new InteliGenNTC BaseBox and InteliVision 8 combination.
ComAp produces an extensive family of gen-set, generator
and engine controllers providing comprehensive control.
Cutting-edge communication modules allow detailed
information from every generator to be received and
evaluated remotely, whether on a PC or smartphone.
Bahadir Celim explained the importance of reliability:
When the worlds spotlight is on us we need to be certain
the lights stayed on! ComAp provides a complete and
reliable service so that were always in control of the power
being generated.
The reliability of the paralleling capability and the overall
controller flexibility, including the ability to customize screen
information are invaluable tools in the successful delivery of
key infrastructure for one of the most logistically challenging
events in the world of sport.

New CHP plant
for Kent
Renewable energy company,
Estover Energy, has
announced plans to develop a
65m CHP plant in the South
East, making a positive
impact upon the regions
renewable energy sector.
The specialist company is
proposing to develop the local
scale biomass plant on
Discovery Park; a science
and technology park based in
Sandwich, Kent, and will
supply renewable heat and
electricity in park.
The planned CHP plant will
also supply low carbon
electricity to the national grid,
supporting the UKs national
target to generate 15% of its
energy demand from renew-
able sources by 2020.
The project represents an
inward investment of
approximately 80m to the
area and will significantly
bolster the local economy.
Around 100 jobs will be
created during the
construction period and up to
40 permanent jobs, in
positions at the plant and a
further 20 jobs in the forestry
and transport sector.
The proposed facility would
use conventional CHP steam
turbine technology - proven to
be reliable and clean - to
generate approximately 11
MW of power and 8MW of
heat, which would be enough
energy to supply the
equivalent of 21,000 homes
with electricity.
The biomass plant will use
locally sourced low-grade
wood fuel to generate renew-
able heat and power for the
Park.

CHP/District Heating is at the heart of
the Ibroxholm Development at Govan
Due for completion on August 12th, 2013, the Ibroxholm Oval tower block development at Govan
in Glasgow, Scotland will employ an advanced CHP system. Once completed it will form the UKs
largest mid-market rental project.
A combined heat-and-power system will warm the homes through a network of underground
pipes.
District heating involves distributing heat generated in a centralised location for residential and
commercial heating requirements such as space heating and water heating. The heat is often
obtained from a cogeneration plant burning fossil fuels but increasingly biomass, although heat-
only boiler stations, geothermal heating and central solar heating are also used. District heating
plants can provide higher efficiencies and better pollution control than localised boilers. District
heating with combined heat and power (CHPDH) is the cheapest method of cutting carbon
emissions, and has one of the lowest carbon footprints of all fossil generation plants.
George Kirk, currently Cities Director at ScottishPower Energy Networks, tells UKPN:
Pioneering projects like this also allow our engineers to gain greater insight and understanding
of the way combined heat and power systems will integrate with the electricity distribution
network in the future.
This significantly reduces its
carbon footprint and reliance
on imported fossil fuel. The
wood fuel comes solely from
local forestry and woodland,
typically within an average
distance of 80 miles.
Discovery Park, Europes
leading science & technology
park, was chosen as the
optimum location for the plant.
Following an extensive
review, Estover Energy
located potential sites in the
South East with suitable
industrial heat partners.
The site covers about 10
acres of surplus industrial
land within the energy centre
that currently provides
Discovery Park with heat and
electricity produced from
burning fossil fuels.
The location was chosen
because of its Enterprise
Zone status and also due to its
existing infrastructure, which
the CHP plant can use to sup-
ply power to the whole of
Discovery Park as it currently
stands and as it continues to
evolve and expand.
Estover Energy is intending
to submit a key planning
application for the CHP plant
to Dover District Council in
July, and if granted, work
would begin on site in 2014.

lectraTherm, a leader in small-
scale, waste heat to power
generation, has just installed a Green
Machine at a biogas plant in Slapanov,
Czech Republic, in its second
collaboration with biogas plant
constructor EnviTec.
ElectraTherm and its distributor, GB
Consulting, recently commissioned an
ElectraTherm Green Machine in to
generate additional power and to increase energy efficiency
onsite, and the machine has accrued more than 2,500 hours with
greater than 98% availability, as of May 2013.
The Green Machine was added at a biogas power facility with
a GE Jenbacher 700kWe internal combustion engine running off
manure and corn biogas. The Green Machine gets its heat from a
water loop extracted from the Jenbachers jacket water and
exhaust gas at 100C. The machine produces 25-35kWe, and
excess heat is also used to supply heat to local buildings, assist
in the digestion process and to dry wood.
ElectraTherms patented Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)
technology begins with hot water entering the Green Machine,
where it heats a working fluid into a pressurised vapour. The high
pressure vapour expands through ElectraTherms patented twin
screw power block, spinning an electric generator to produce
fuel-free, emission-free power. After turning the expander, the
vapour is condensed back into liquid through the use of a liquid
loop radiator.GB Consulting has more Green Machines installed
in the Czech Republic than any other OR technology that we
know of, comments Lok Selveraj, CEO of GB Consulting.

Electricity storage facility at
Leighton Buzzard gets goahead
Plans for a cutting-edge electricity storage facility at
Leighton Buzzard have been granted planning permission,
and could pave the way for others across the UK.
UK Power Networks, which distributes electricity in the
East of England, London and the South East, last month
received consents to build the energy storage facility at a
substation site in the town.
The company liaised closely with the council and local
residents over the last year in order to reach the agreement
and ensure the development meets local requirements.
Nick Heyward, UK Power Networks project director for
Smarter Network Storage, said: The granting of consents
for the storage facility is an important milestone for the
Smarter Network Storage project, and ensures that we can
move forward by deferring or avoiding the significant
rebuild of the electricity network which would have other-
wise been needed at Leighton Buzzard.
This innovative installation will also provide a leading test
bed for exploring the capabilities and economics of high-
voltage energy storage, which is very useful for the
industry.
The project is due to install a 6MW/10MWh big battery at
one of the towns main substation sites by the end of 2014.
The device will be the largest of its kind located on a
distribution network in the UK. The project aims to help
decrease the future costs of energy storage in the UK and
increase network investment efficiency, supporting the
adoption of more low carbon technologies on the electricity
network.
The project will involve a range of commercial and techni-
cal trials to explore and improve the economics of electrical
energy storage, allowing storage to benefit the electricity
system in a number of sustainable and flexible ways.
The big battery will be used as an alternative method to
traditional network reinforcement; reducing the immediate
need for upgrading the electricity network to accommodate
low carbon technologies and add flexibility to reduce the
capacity constraints at the site.
The project secured 13.2 million of funding from the
regulator, Ofgem, through the Low Carbon Network Fund in
November 2012.
This will be the first time that big battery of this size has
been used in this way by a UK distribution network
operator. The significant knowledge and learning from the
trials, which will be shared with other network operators,
trade associations, the Government and Ofgem, will
support the industry in assessing the full potential of electri-
cal storage, enabling more efficient use of storage in the
future and reducing overall costs for customers.
UK Power Networks wants to keep the local community
informed of developments, before and throughout
construction on site, which is likely to start in the autumn.
The company will be working closely with Central
Bedfordshire Council and the community to minimise
disruption - for example, by ensuring adequate traffic
management for the project duration.
Project Director Nick Heyward said: We want to take the
local community along with us on what will be an exciting
and important innovative development for the distribution of
electricity. This project will have an impact not only for
Leighton Buzzard but also nationally. What we learn here
will be vital for future similar schemes.

Atkins in 2m DONG Cumbria contract
Atkins has won a contract with DONG Energy Wind Power worth 2 million to extend one of their
existing wind farms.
The Walney Offshore Wind Farm consists of 102 turbines, each with a capacity of 3.6MW, mak-
ing it one of the biggest of its kind in the world. The extension will cover an area of 145 km2 and
is fully owned by DONG Energy.
Located approximately 15km off Walney Island, Cumbria, in the UKs Irish Sea, the farm
provides clean electricity for approximately 320,000 UK households.
Atkins role in this extension programme, which will run until 2016, will involve the concept
design, detailed design and support during fabrication and final installation of two offshore sub-
stations including both the jackets and topsides. Atkins technical expertise and experience in off-
shore engineering factored heavily in securing this contract.
Brian Lauritsen, engineering manager, DONG Energy, told UKPN: As a market leader DONG
Energy has always used high class consultancies for our work. Atkins deep pedigree in offshore
engineering from their 40 years of oil and gas experience, combined with their sector knowledge
of our offshore renewable, meant they were our first choice for the extension of Walney Offshore

Black Hole particle

just 10 Watts
W
hat does the world of

gensets & batteries have
to do with black holes and
quantum mechanics?
Well, thanks to a new
unit based on 10-watt
capacitor banks, the
mysteries of Deep Space
can now be replicated in a
relatively small area not
much bigger than a
cricket-pitch.
An innovative device
developed in collaboration
between the University of
Michigan and Queen's University Belfast, it is just 10
square metres in size. It can produce energetic bursts of
positrons as dense as those produced by the giant particle-
factories at CERN. Best of all, it take absolutely minimal
power.
Dr Gianluca Sarri told UKPN: The laser energy was of
about 1J per shot. Since the electrical energy to laser
energy efficiency is of the order of 1%, a laser shot
requires approximately 100J of electrical energy. This
energy is released by capacitor banks which charge up on
a time-scale of ten seconds; the electrical power needed
for a laser shot is thus, in our system, of approximately 10
Watts.
Dr Sarris smaller, cheaper machine might help labs
around the world study deep-space objects such as the
powerful radiation jets emitted by black holes.
Antiparticles annihilate on contact with ordinary
mattermaking it hard to produce and study them on Earth.
The vast particle physics project at CERN near Geneva,
Switzerland, has been successfully creating antimatter fbut
it has proved costly for the teams at CERN and has
required an 190-metre-long track.
A breakthrough came when a team headed by Dr
Gianluca Sarri at Queen's University Belfast, UK, found a
way to generate rapid laser bursts to make positrons in
their smaller, budget device. The laser pulse ionises inert
helium gas, generating a stream of high-speed electrons.
This electron beam is directed at a thin metallic foil so that
it crashes into metal atoms, releasing a jet of electrons and
positrons.
Christened the antimatter gun because it produces
bullets of positrons lasting just 30 femtoseconds
(quadrillionths of a second). Although they are only short in
duration, the beams contain a quadrillion positrons per
cubic centimetre, says Sarri. This means they offer
positron densities as good as the ones created at CERN.
Dr Sarri feels his equipment is more practical and
cheaper than others in operation around the world: "They
produce streams of positrons which are extremely broad,
whereas our jet is a hundred times narrower and remains
pencil-like as it propagates", he concludes. "This is similar
to the powerful streams of matter-antimatter observed
outside pulsars and black holes."

larke Energy has won a series of major orders with Tamar Energy, a developer of
anaerobic digestion projects in the UK, to supply combined heat and power systems for its
biogas plants.
Tamar Energy is a renewable energy business which focuses solely on anaerobic digestion.
Tamar Energy has the long-term aim of building a UK network of 40 plants and producing
100MW of renewable base-load electricity.
The UK Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and Department for Energy Food
and Rural Affairs (Defra) recently presented their Anaerobic Digestion Strategy and Action Plan.
This plan outlines a road map for increasing energy from waste through anaerobic digestion as
part of their commitment to be the greenest Government ever with a target of supporting up to 3-
5 Terawatt hours of electricity from anaerobic digestion by 2020.
Tamar Energy has placed initial orders with Clarke Energy for four of GE Power & Waters J420
and two J416 containerised Jenbacher gas engines. GE Jenbacher gas engines are renowned
for their electrical efficiency and robust performance on challenging gases such as biogas. The
gas engines are fitted with heat
exchangers to facilitate
cogeneration, and recovering
heat as hot water for use in the
heating of the digesters and in
pasteurisation.
The gas engines performance
will be supported by Clarke
Energys service network
which is the largest network of
dedicated gas engine service
engineers in the UK.
Anaerobic digestion plants that
utilise gas engines are able to
generate base-load renewable
electricity. This contrasts with
wind turbines and photovoltaic
panels which typically generate
only when the wind blows or
the sun shines.

New biomass plant
for Kent, UK
M
VV Energie has begun work building a new biomass power
plant close to Sittingbourne in Kent. The project is being
implemented by MVV Environment Ridham Ltd, an English
subsidiary of MVV Energie.
Located at Ridham Dock, an industrial port on the river
Swale, this power plant will use old and waste timber to
generate electricity and heating energy.
This represents our first investment in biomass-based
energy generation abroad, Dr. Georg Mller, CEO of MVV
Energie, tells WIP. We will be drawing on the same wealth of
technological and operating expertise that has already made
us one of the market leaders in the biomass business in
Germany.
The company is investing around 140 million (approx.
118 million) in the power plant. MVV Energie already
operates three biomass power plants in Germany with a
throughput of 370,000 tonnes of waste timber a year.
Building the power plant in Ridham Dock will enable us to
benefit from the attractive conditions on offer in the UK,
reports Paul Carey, Managing Director of MVV Environment
Ridham. The plant will have a high energy efficiency rate,
absolutely state-of-the-art technology and make a valuable
contribution towards ecological energy generation.
The power plant at Ridham Dock will use old timber to
generate both electricity and heating energy. The power
plant has a net capacity of 23MW and will generate almost
188 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity a year. The
plant will be able to supply neighbouring industry with
environmentally-friendly heating energy, says MVV Energie.

major customer Integral; some of its key suppliers and customers in a sponsored bike ride
following a circular route from Integral's Bristol office. Altogether, 1,000 was raised in
sponsorship.
The one-day event held last month, on 8th June 2013, involved a choice of two routes riding
either a total of 100 or a slightly easier 30 miles.
The 100-mile route (via Slimbridge and Symonds Yat through the Forest of Dean to Tintern

quiet roads along an undulating route split into five stages to allow the teams of riders to
participate in as much or as little as they could over the total 100 mile distance. The 30 mile route
also provided an option for the less athletic to participate.
Taking part again, and leading from the front, Managing Director Keith Littler tells UKPN: " We
enjoyed the event so much last year that we had to get involved again this year. We managed to
get 5 out of our 8 riders to complete the whole distance. A significant achievement both for the
individuals and the team!"

The energy usage of this
plant is exemplary. The heat
generated from the process is
recovered and sent via a
pipeline to be used at an
adjacent feed mill. Electricity
generated at the Weltec plant
is also fed to the neighboring
mill, when this is not opera-
tional, the power is fed to the
National Grid.

Dalkia CHP system
C
ogenco, Dalkia's specialist CHP provider, has supplied a
new CHP system to the famous Butlins holiday resort in
Skegness.
The 120kWe CHP plant will provide heating and electricity for
the resort, which caters for 1.5 million holiday makers each
year.
Cogenco's CHP is a packaged system designed for smaller
commercial sites, and has been sized to deliver significant
savings compared with electricity supply from the grid and
running separate heating systems as well as reducing CO2
emissions.
In this application, waste energy from the electricity
generation plant is fed through an exchanger to provide
heating for showers, pools and rooms.
Mike Crowther, operations director at Butlins, told WIP that
the new system is curently allowing the Butlins resort to
provide electricity and heating to the indoor health spa and
Splash Waterworld pool complex, while considerably reducing
its costs.
Crowther explains: "Dalkia's CHP technology has enabled us to
lower our energy bills and maintenance costs, whilst
continuing to reduce carbon emissions significantly."
He says: "With long-term commitments to energy efficiency
and carbon reduction, we required an efficient on-site CHP
system that could provide a heating solution to our swimming
facilities, which are in constant use throughout the day."
As part of Dalkias cogeneration plant management
package, the company is pledged to provide clients with:
* Uninterrupted Energy Supply at Reduced Cost
* Guaranteed total energy efficiency reducing the amount of
primary energy used by up to 40%.
* Local energy management based on an ongoing optimum
choice of available energy sources, including gas, power, hot
water, steam and other primary energies.
* Secure heat and power supply to the site.
Dalkias CHP technology is said to create a significantly
reduced environmental impact, with greenhouse gas
emissions reduced by more than 30%, rising to up to 60% when
cogeneration replaces fuel oil or coal, avoiding the emission
of up to 500 grams of carbon dioxide per kWh produced.

has brought on-line two gas-fired
power plants in Africa with an
aggregate capacity of 220 MW.
In Cte d'Ivoire, Aggreko has
successfully commissioned 100 MW
of additional generation, taking the
total capacity of the Vridi plant to 200
MW. On 1 July, 2013, the new
capacity was officially inaugurated
by the Prime Minister of Cte
d'Ivoire, His Excellency, Daniel
Kablan Duncan, during a ceremony
at the project site in the capital
Abidjan.
The event was also attended by the
UK Minister for Africa, The Right
Honourable Mark Simmonds MP
and the Cte d'Ivoire Minister of
Mines and Energy, The Honourable
Adama Toungara. Senior
management of CI-Energies and
Aggreko were also in attendance.
On June 15th Aggreko also
completed the commissioning of 122
MW of gas-fired plant at Ressano
Garcia in Mozambique. This second
phase of what is the world's first
cross-border interim power plant is now supplying 90 MW to NamPower, the Namibian state
utility and 32 MW to EDM, the Mozambican electricity supply utility.
The total capacity installed in Ressano Garcia now exceeds 230 MW, and the capacity is being
shared between Namibia, South Africa and Mozambique. The additional 122 MW was brought
online 13 weeks from the date contracts were signed with NamPower and EDM.
With these two plants coming on-line, Aggreko now has around 1,000 MW of gas-fired power
plants operational. Rupert Soames, Chief Executive of Aggreko told UKPN: "We have invested
some 300 million in gas-powered technology over the last five years, and it now accounts for
around 40% of our Power Project's revenues. For those customers who have access to gas, it is
significantly cheaper and cleaner than liquid fuel alternatives".

Thornton Bank
J
uly 4th, 2013: the last turbine at the offshore wind farm
Thornton Bank was successfully installed. This means that
the installation of all 48 wind turbines off the UK coast, with
a combined capacity of 325 megawatts (MW), is now
complete.
With the generated electricity the power plant can supply
around 600,000 Belgian households every year. In the third
and final phase of the wind farm, a total of 24 turbines of the
six-MW-class have been erected, which together have an
installed capacity of 148 MW. Six of these had already been
connected to the grid in 2012. Around 18 turbines are
planned to be commissioned in the upcoming weeks.
Thornton Bank offshore wind farm is situated 30 kilometres
off the coast in waters up to 30 metres deep. The first phase
of the wind farm, comprising six 5 megawatt plants, first
came into operation in 2009.
Thornton Bank wind farm is one of the largest project-
financed offshore wind farms in Europe. In all, eight
commercial European banks, the European Investment Bank
and the German and Danish export credit agencies have
provided approximately 900 million euros in finance and ven-
ture capital. The total investment amounts to approximately
1.3 billion . With 27%, RWE Innogy is the biggest shareholder
of the Thornton Bank Wind Farm.
Due to the strong prevailing winds, countries on the North
Sea, particularly Germany and Denmark, have used the shore
for wind power since the 1990s. The North Sea is the home of
one of the first large-scale offshore wind farms in the world,
Horns Rev 1, completed in 2002. Since then many other wind
farms have been commissioned in the North Sea, including
Thanet in the UK and Horns Rev 2 in Denmark.
The expansion of offshore wind farms has met with some
resistance. Concerns have included shipping collisionsand
environmental effects on ocean ecology and wildlife such as
fish and migratory birds, however, these concerns were found
to be negligible in a long-term study in Denmark released in
2006 and again in a UK government study in 2009.

Broadcrowns search
for sustainable solutions
B
roadcrown Renewable Energy Ltd
specialises in the design of waste to
energy power systems - the
conversion of renewable feedstock
into electricity and high value fuels.
These systems are based on a power
generation technology known as gasification.
Gasification converts many types of biomass,
municipal, industrial and agricultural waste
into a clean synthetic gas (syngas).
The broiler poultry sector in Northern Ireland
is a significant part of the local economy.
However, approximately 260ktpa (thousand
tonnes per annum) of poultry litter is created
and this could rise to 400ktpa within 5 - 10
years.
Traditionally, the industry has relied on
spreading the litter on agricultural land, but
this practice is no longer sustainable.
Poultry litter has a relatively high phosphorus
content and phosphate losses via run-off,
contributes to nutrient enrichment of streams,
rivers and lakes.
Action to address nutrient enrichment is
required by EU legislation and further action is
required in relation to the management of
poultry litter before the next Nitrates Action
Program is agreed with the European
Commission in 2014.
The challenge therefore, is to find innovative,
appropriate, economic and sustainable
solutions to reducing phosphorus surpluses;
end-to- end solutions which will be capable of
being delivered whilst maintaining on-farm
biosecurity and will be fully compliant with all
relevant legislation and regulations.
Broadcrown proposes to develop and
tangibly demonstrate a commercially viable
and environmentally acceptable concept for a
distributed co-generation power plant.
The plant process will use gasification to
extract the energy content in poultry litter and
convert it into a fuel gas. The char byproduct
will be refined to extract phosphates.
This first phase contract has been awarded
to several companies. Phase 1 stage will take
six months. Robust and viable proposals shall
then be selected for Phase 2 prototype
development.
This project follows on the heels of
Broadcrown securing a contract with the
Energy Technologies Institute in April 2013.
Along with two other companies Broadcrown
was selected to design and develop a
commercially viable demonstration plant in
the UK.
The aim of this ETI commissioned / funded
2.8m project will be to demonstrate how a
plant can create energy from municipal waste
at efficiencies higher than previously
produced in the industry at this scale.
The challenge is that the plant must
demonstrate an industry leading net overall
operational efficiency of at least 25%.
Stage one of this project (the design phase)
will continue for 10 months and phase two
(construction phase) will be awarded to the
selected winning design. This would then be
taken forward to build and be operational by
2015, operating as a demonstration site for up
to two years.
This project is thought to be the first time a
total system approach for a waste to energy
gasification facility of this size has been
considered in an R&D project.
Broadcrown will design a high-efficiency
demonstration facility with an electrical output
between 2 and 3 MWe using a robust yet
highly scaleable concept that promotes waste
management and power generation at a local
level rather than large scale centralised
powerplants.
Broadcrown Ltd will be partnering with major
European and American technology
companies including a gas engine
manufacturer to demonstrate a combined
cycle with unprecedented efficiency using
syngas.
David Borgman, Managing Director, told
UKPN: "We have always looked for a better
way of doing things, reducing energy
consumption, increasing power outputs and
meeting the demands of tomorrow.
He concludes: These commissions are a
welcome endorsement of our commitment to
providing the best engineering expertise and
delivering systems to the highest standard."
Broadcrown Ltd designs and manufactures
standard and bespoke power generation
systems from 6kVA to +30MVA for a diverse
range of applications up to 30MVA.
Established in 1976 in Hixon, Staffordshire,
the Broadcrown Group now comprises two

Centrax to
deliver 3 turbines
T
wo CX501-KB7 units have been
ordered by DALKIA. One is for the
Omnitherm district heating plant in
Valence, near Lyon, where the new
5.2MW package is replacing two existing
KB7s that have been in service since 2000
and have reached the end of their 12-year
EdF contract.
The second unit will equip the Gie Evry district
heating plant in the south-west of Paris,
replacing a Turbomeca TM5000 that Centrax
has maintained for the past seven years.
The second French customer to select the
CX501-KB7 is the energy company COFELY.
Its new KB7 is destined for the Chambery
plant of gypsum producer Placoplatre, where
it will be used for direct drying of gypsum. It
replaces a TM5000 with 12 years of past
service.
Centrax will deliver all three units this summer
for installation and commissioning in time for
the start of the French winter heating season
on November 1ST, 2013.
The CX501 package has been hugely
successful using the Rolls-Royce 501-K gas
turbine. The engine is a single-shaft design
utilising a 14- stage axial flow compressor and
six combustion chambers.
The 501-KB5 aero-derivative engine
shares commonality with the other single-
shaft 501-K engines. Its low mass flow and
high exhaust temperature, giving high thermal
efficiency, make the KB5 ideal in co-
generation. The 501-KB7 builds on the proven
KB5 engine with the addition of a zero stage to
the compressor inlet of the turbine. This
increases mass flow and pressure ratio by up
to 31%, increasing performance & efficiency.
The CX501 range offers:
- 3.9 MW to 5.2 MW power options
- Rolls-Royce 501 Gas Turbines
- Aero-derivative engine
- Full service support network
- Full load testing on gas or liquid
- In-house engine repair facility
- Turnkey capabilities
- "On-skid" control panels
- Multi-fuel capability
Delivering up to 32MW of electrical power,
the aero derivative industrial design of the
RB211 has demonstrated outstanding
reliability, with hundreds of gas turbines
installed and over 15 million operating hours.
Centraxs Trent 60 is said to deliver up to
64MW of electric power with simple cycle
efficiency of 42%, the Trent 60 has
established a new benchmark for fuel efficient
gas turbine power.
In February 2013 Centrax completed one of
its highest-profile installations in recent years
with the commissioning of its first Siemens
CX400 package.
The 12MW unit is now meeting 40% of the
hot water demand of the French city of
Versailles, on the outskirts of Paris, while also
producing electricity for sale to French power
utility EDF.
The Versailles sale also further enhances the
impressive Centrax track record with power
company COFELY, which now operates 23
Centrax units at installations in France and the
UK.
The combined heat and power installation at
Versailles is the first Siemens gas turbine to
be packaged by Centrax since the two com-
panies forged an agreement that enables
Centrax to market the SGT-300 and SGT-400
gas turbines. Centrax completed the installa-
tion and commissioning well within a tight
schedule, reports the company.
Seven months ago, in November 2012,
Centrax won a significant new order for the
supply of two CX501-KB7 generator set
packages to Nobel Oil in Russia.
The two outdoor packages are being located
at an oil and gas facility in the Yuzhno-
Oshkoye Field which is in Russia's Komi
Republic, approximately 1,000km North East
of Moscow.
The 5.2 MWe generator sets will each be
used to power the oil extraction plant at the
site and will be powered by associated gas
from the oil production process, significantly
reducing quantities of gas flared at site.
This is a significant order for Centrax
because it is for an important new customer in
Russia. Regional Sales Manager Nick Royal
tells UKPN. It will further develop our position
in the Russian market, establishing an
expanded customer base for our products.
Working closely with St. Petersburg-based
engineering contractor, Zvezda Energetika,
Centrax was selected for the project because
it offered competitive delivery and installation
time and, importantly, have proven equipment
at similar installations in Russia with other oil
companies such as TNK-BP.
The end user for the equipment will be Nobel
Holdings, a privately-owned oil and gas
exploration company. Nobel Oil require the
equipment in order to achieve new targets for
reduced flaring which came into effect in
Russia at the beginning of 2013. This recent
order brings the total number of Centrax units
in Russia to 33.
www.centraxgt.com

irst unveiled at the Hannover Fair
2013 the Bowman type 15 heat
exchanger generated a huge level of
interest, reports the manufacturer.
Designed specifically to address market
demands for a high efficiency unit for engines
up to 1MW typical power, the type 15 is
capable of recovering around 600kW of waste
heat through the engines exhaust stream at
an exhaust gas mass flow rate of 70kg/min.
The unit is perfect for larger independent
genset applications, where high levels of
waste heat that would otherwise be lost to the
atmosphere can be recovered and used to
provide either hot water or heat thermal oil for
ORC systems at no extra cost in terms of fuel
usage.
Commenting on the launch of the unit,
Kevin Howell of Bowman, told UKPN: The
launch of the type 15 heat exchanger is a
significant step forward into larger scale power
gen applications for Bowman. It also gives
genset manufacturers the opportunity to offer
their customers CHP solutions that combine
exceptional efficiency with a competitive
price.
As well as for heat recovery, these units can
also be used to reduce the exhaust
temperature in engines operating in
hazardous environments where for safety
reasons it is necessary to reduce the
temperature of the exhaust gases
In common with all standard Bowman
Exhaust Gas Heat Exchangers, the new type
15 unit is suitable for use with engines
powered by Biogas, Diesel Gases and Natural
Gases.
Bowman Exhaust Gas Exchangers are
manufactured to a standard range of sizes,
they are competitively priced and offered on a
quick delivery to meet clients build
schedules.
Bowman can also now offer several
exhaust gas heat exchangers with
right-angled end covers, which are fitted with
a removable plate on each end, allowing easy
access to the heat exchanger tubes for
cleaning and maintenance without the need to
drain the system.
When Bowman exhaust gas heat
exchangers are used in conjunction with other
Bowman units such as: Header Tank Heat
Exchangers, Charge Air Coolers and
Bowman Oil Coolers, it is possible to reclaim
over 90% of lost heat from the engine.
Bowman heat exchangers are tested to the
limit and proven in the most demanding
applications, the world over including the
British Antarctic Surveys (BAS) new research
station, Halley VI. In winter, temperatures on
the Brunt Ice Shelf plunge to - 50C and snow
falls for half the year.
Bowman units are critical to the combined
heat and power system (CHP) which supplies
energy for space heating, hot water, lighting,
ventilation and electrical power.
Without this CHP system, the people on the
resident BAS team who live and work at the
base could not survive.
The units met the demands of this unique
artesian water supply, a variety of pool sizes,
heating methods and the massive fluctuation
in outside air temperatures from below
freezing in winter up to 40C in summer.
Bowman heat exchangers are also central
to three CHP power plant units at a Finnish
eco residential project.
The units are fitted to Sisu Gensets for
recovering waste heat from the exhaust and
jacket water systems. The power plant
supplies heat and power to 10 houses.
EJ Bowman is a worldwide, ISO9001:2008
certified OEM manufacturer of Heat

commercial applications.
Bowman occupies a purpose-built factory
which is ideally situated centrally in the heart
of the UK, from where it directly exports over

Combined Heat And Power Solutions For A Sustainable Future
Cogeneration Systems - also known as Combined Heat & Power (CHP) simultaneously produces electrical and
thermal energy from a single fuel source. The energy provided from our lean-burn gas generator sets is used for
many purposes, from heating commercial greenhouses and hospitals to heat production for drinks manufacture
and electrical and thermal energy for waste water treatment plants. Cogeneration drives efciency and cuts
costs, whilst helping users comply with emissions standards.

New energy
centre for Kodak
T
he Kodak Harrow site operates a
combined heat and power (CHP)
plant that delivers steam to the factory
producing colour negative paper for
world-wide use, and to maintain building
conditions, using a 50 ton Water Tube Boiler.
Built during the heyday of film processing, the
plant is sized for a historically larger factory
operating seven days a week.
With changing patterns of usage, the current
site now operates weekdays only. Running
the existing CHP plant through the weekend
when demand for steam is low is both
inefficient and costly.
Kodak launched a project in 2011 to look at
ways of reducing its energy consumption at
the weekends and other periods of low energy
demand.
As a result of this study Kodak decided to
install a steam generator able to supply 8000
kg/h of steam to maintain the steam service
for non production needs, allowing the CHP
plant to be switched off at the weekend and
restarted on Sunday night in readiness for
manufacturing operation on Monday morning.
As space in the existing boiler house was at
a premium, Babcock Wanson designed a
separate Energy Centre for Kodak, based
around its ESM8000 Steam Generator.
A coil type Steam Generator, the ESM 8000
provides high operating efficiency coupled
with low emissions. It utilises modern controls
to maintain a close ratio between the burner
firing rate and water input with inverter drive of
both the combustion air and feed water
pumps.
This ensures close control of both steam
output and steam quality and lowest
practicable consumption of both fuel and
electrical power.
In addition to its operating efficiency, the ESM
was chosen because of its quick Autostart
facility which enables the Generator to be
brought on line in a very short timeframe if
steam demand fluctuates.
This can be controlled remotely from the
Kodak main process control centre for
maximum convenience.
Construction of the new energy centre hous-
ing the ESM required careful planning due to
space and access restrictions.
Babcock Wanson designed a dedicated
vented steel frame boiler house with a
separate self supporting flue for the ESM.
The latter proved particularly challenging due
to the height requirements of the flue 14m
above the factory roof - requiring 8m deep
foundations and a cruciform pile.
According to Abid Khalil, Project Manager,
Paper Manufacturing Operations, the key to
the success of this project has been the close
working relationships created between
Kodak, Babcock Wanson and the
subcontractors.
The result is a system that puts Kodak in
position to control and monitor its steam
requirements on a more precise basis and
enable significant energy cost savings.
The new plant set up has driven an
estimated 18% reduction in total energy cost
for the site. Reduced energy consumption is
also driving a reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions of NOx, CO and CO2, comments
Abid Khalil,
It is anticipated that the new Energy Centre
with the ESM Steam Generator will offer a full
payback to the company within six months.
Babcock Wanson offers a complete range of
products and services for boiler houses and
other process heating needs.
It can also provide steam boilers, thermal
fluid heaters, rapid steam generators and hot
water boilers to VOC and odour treatment by
thermal oxidation, water treatment or process
air heating solutions.
The companys aim is to help optimise
customers energy production with high quali-
ty products and efficient service.
In 2012 Babcock Wanson UK was awarded
the status of Carbon Trust Implementation
Services Accredited Supplier for its Thermal
Fluid Heating solutions.
The accreditation scheme uses the Carbon
Trust's ten years' experience advising UK
businesses and public sector organisations
on means of reducing their energy
consumption. It makes energy efficiency easy
by matching customers that need to imple-
ment energy efficiency projects with good
quality, established, equipment suppliers who
have a track record of delivering energy sav-
ing projects.
Babcock Wanson applied for accreditation
as an independent verification of its
commitment to providing energy efficient
process heating solutions.
The company provides a comprehensive
range of Thermal Fluid Heaters with
integrated gas, oil or dual fuel burner to meet
the needs of modern industry. A Thermal Fluid
Heater is a closed circuit, no-loss system, so
heat loss is minimal which makes it highly
energy efficient. A typical energy saving when
using a thermal fluid system can be as high as
20-50%.

B
ased in Ulverston, Cumbria, Bender
UK specialises in the supply of
innovative solutions for safe handling
of electrical power. These solutions
are specifically tailored to meet the needs of
customers across a wide range of sectors
from healthcare, rail and marine engineering
through to electric cars, data handling centres
and solar power generation.
Bender is a global technology leader in
electrical safety and monitoring systems, and
the products emerging from its German
research and manufacturing centres ensure
the protection of people and the safe
operation of machines, plants and systems
around the world.
Wherever absolute confidence and security
for the supply and control of electrical power is
required there is a good chance Bender
products will be involved, albeit behind the
scenes, or perhaps more accurately, behind
the covers of vital electrical equipment.
Most recently the Bender UK team played
their own winning role in ensuring the
reliability and performance of generators
across the Olympic Park at London 2012.
Bender components protect the complex
systems on board Royal Navy surface ships
and the Astute class submarines, protect
sensitive manufacturing systems and data
centres where unexpected power shut down
can be hugely costly, and ensure the integrity
of signalling systems which control Britains
railways.
The lifesaving role is even more acute in the
medical sector where Bender has an enviable
track record in maintaining power to vital
equipment used for life support, diagnosis and
treatment. This year Bender formed a UK
partnership with Steris Surgical Products, a
world leader in healthcare and operating
theatre equipment.
Bender UK is principally involved in the
application, installation, servicing support and
sales of the huge range of Bender equipment
which is all manufactured in Germany.
Managing director Steve Mason is proud of
the worldwide reputation of the German
parent company, but prouder still of the contin-
uing growth of the UK operation, both in terms
of orders and its own reputation for outstand-
ing service and customer support.
He tells UKPN: There is a huge market for
Bender products because of the vast range of
electrical systems which cannot be allowed to
fail or shut down even for a few seconds.
Customers rely on our equipment to monitor
the performance of their equipment, and
protect their unearthed (IT) power systems
and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), to
warn them of potential faults or power leak-
ages, and to help them plan maintenance and
maximise the efficiency of their systems.
He continues: Much of our equipment is
designed to make customers aware of
problems before they become critical so that
they can instigate preventative maintenance.
We also manufacture equipment which
provides a failsafe to ensure that if one power
source ceases to operate, it switches over so
quickly to an alternative power source that the
interruption is imperceptible.
In medical installations performance can be
the vital difference between life or death.
Performance can be equally critical in
sensitive manufacturing operations, power
generation and management and processing
sites again, even a brief interruption of
power supply can be disastrous.
Part of our job is to ensure that never
happens and to maximise the operational
performance and availability of the systems
we support, confirms Mason.
A new range of power quality monitoring
equipment now available from Bender UK has
been designed to protect data centre power
distribution systems against risks ranging
from reduced service life and increased
energy consumption, through to system
failure and the prevention of fires in cabling.
The new Bender power quality monitoring
(PQM) units ensure high availability and a
power supply free from interference caused
by frequency converters, switched-mode
power supplies, uninterruptible power supply
systems (UPS) and electronic ballasts.
These units distort the sine wave of the
electrical power and superimpose different
frequencies on it causing the power supply
to become dirty. Systems interactions can
also cause interference in neighbouring
equipment.
The most frequent problems are caused by
harmonic components on the electrical supply
typically produced by other items of
electronic equipment. These third order
harmonics build up in the neutral conductor
resulting in overload and if the situation goes
unnoticed there can be a risk of fire.
The conventional solution to a detected
overload is a protective device that trips out to
protect the neutral conductor. However, this
safety measure causes reduced availability
due to frequent downtime.
Benders monitoring equipment enables
early detection of a potentially dangerous

situation allowing enough time to correct
the problem without the need to shut down
equipment; for example, less important
loads can be shut down via switching
signals before the protective device trips out.
Power quality monitoring is particularly
effective when combined with Benders
range of residual current monitoring units
(RCM) which detect degradation in the level
of insulation in an installation or component
again improving availability by signalling
the problem at an early stage before safety
shutdown.
Information gained from the early warning of
developing faults allows shutdowns to be
planned, enhancing asset uptime and
making it ideal for applications where power
failure cannot be tolerated.
Benders power quality monitor device also
acts as an energy meter while checking the
system quality, determining the energy
consumption per cost centre and reducing
high overhead costs.
The dual function of monitoring energy
consumption and energy quality can
therefore assist in reducing energy costs
while at the same time delivering high
availability of supply.

designed to meet the needs of its
customers across sectors from healthcare,

Bender is well-known for specialising in the
development of innovative solutions for safe
handling of electrical power specifically and
its products are designed to predict and
avoid unexpected interruption of power
supply.
Bender UK supports Drayson in
World Land Speed record win
In a recent achievement Drayson Racing
Technologies has broken the world land
speed record for a lightweight electric car.
Its Lola B12 69/EV vehicle, which uses
electrical protection devices supplied by
Bender UK in Ulverston, hit a top speed of
204.2mph (328.6km/h) at a racetrack at
RAF Elvington in Yorkshire.
Chief executive Lord Drayson, who was
behind the wheel, said the achievement was
designed to highlight electronic vehicle
technology's potential.
Bender UK supplied Drayson Racing
Technologies with Bender IR155-3204
devices to protect the Drayson B12/69EV.
Angus Lyon, Chief Engineer of drivetrain at
DRT explained: Working closely with
Bender UK, DRT integrated its isolation
monitoring system into the B12 drivetrain
using it as a key component in the safety
case of the vehicle. Throughout this
process, Bender UK and Germany provided
invaluable support allowing the quick and
seamless integration of its products.
The previous 175mph record was set by
Battery Box General Electric in 1974.
Drayson Racing was founded in 2007 by
Paul Drayson, who was then a minister in
the Labour government. The firm, based in
Kidlington, Oxfordshire, works with others to
develop more sustainable automotive
technologies and uses motorsport competi-
tions as a means to focus its efforts.
In order to qualify for an attempt on the
Federation Internationale de l'Automobile's
(FIA) world electric land speed record it had
to make its vehicle weigh less than 1,000kg
(2,204lb) without the driver.
To do this it adapted a Le Mans Series car
it had previously designed which originally
had a bio-ethanol fuel engine and replaced
the part with a lightweight 20 kilowatt hour
battery offering 850 horsepower.
It also adapted the vehicle's chassis, which
is made out of recycled carbon fibre, to
minimise air friction.
"What it, I hope, shows to people is just what
the future potential of electric cars is," Lord
Drayson said shortly after his record-
breaking time was confirmed.
Obviously this is a very special racing car,
but by setting this new world record here in
Britain we say two things. One it is a pointer
to the future - the technology that we
developed for this car will filter down to the
cars we use every day.
And secondly it's a message about how
here in the UK we're a world leader with this
technology. We've led motorsport
engineering, now we're also leading with
electric motorsport engineering."
Drayson Racing's attention will now switch
to the launch of the FIA's Formula E
championship, which is due to begin in
September next year.
London will host the first electric car race.
Rome, Miami, Beijing and Rio de Janeiro
are among the other seven locations.
A different vehicle - similar to a Formula
One machine - is being developed for the
firm by Singapore's Spark and Surrey-based
McLaren for the first year of the competition.
However, Drayson Racing plans to build its
own machine for the 2015 competition using
some of the same components used in its
record-breaking Lola B12 69/EV.

Landfill gas &
CHP systems
E
NER-G is investing 1.5 million in the
landfill gas generation project, which
will capture the methane gas emitted
from 1.5 million tons of waste and
convert it into one megawatt (MW) of
renewable energy. This is sufficient to supply
1,000 homes with renewable electricity.
The facility is expected to begin power
generation towards the end of 2013 and it is
projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions
by 40,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year,
equivalent to the environmental benefit of
carbon sequestered annually by 29,744 acres
of forest.
Celaya's City Mayor, Mr. Ismael Perez
Ordaz commented: "We are proud to
announce this partnership with ENER-G,
which will use advanced technology to create
renewable energy from waste.
This will help the city to reduce its carbon
footprint, while creating an important source of
clean energy. The project will be funded
entirely by ENER-G, but provide an income to
the City from royalty payments."
Hugh Richmond, Managing Director of
ENER-G Mexico, told UKPN: "This is our third
renewable energy venture in Mexico and we
are pleased to partner with the Municipality of
Celaya to open the new biogas generation
facility.
He continued: We will design and build the
facility and manage operation and landfill gas
monitoring over the 15 year contract. We
congratulate the municipality on its vision and
commitment to clean energy."
ENER-G's other Mexican projects include a
partnership with the Municipality of
Aguascalientes to open a 2.45 MW landfill gas
generation facility at the San Nicols landfill
site in Aguascalientes, supplying green power
to Nissan. ENER-G is also set to open a
1.5MW facility in partnership with the
Municipality of Durango.
The landfill gas generation projects will help
Mexico to deliver on its new Climate Change
Act, which commits Mexico to cutting its car-
bon dioxide emissions by 30% by 2020, and
by 50% below current levels by 2050, and to
generate 35% of electricity from renewable
sources by 2024.
ENER-G Mexico specialises in biogas
generation - utilising methane from landfill
gas, anaerobic digestion and mines to
generate renewable electricity.
ENER-G designs, builds, operates and
owns the landfill gas generators, but can also
sell, lease or hire power generation packages.
In the UK, ENER-G has installed four CHP
units to provide efficient generation at the
largest newly-built national museum in the UK
for more than a hundred years.
The prestigious 72 million Museum of
Liverpool now has an advanced combined
heat and power (CHP) system, guaranteeing
annual energy savings of more than
500,000.
The trigeneration technology, which creates
highly efficient heat, electricity and cooling,
will also reduce carbon emissions by 884
tonnes each year - equivalent to the eco-
benefit of taking 295 cars off the road.
ENER-G was commissioned by National
Museums Liverpool (NML) to design and
install the new CHP system at the Mann
Island site - part of the famous Pier Head at
the core of the World Heritage Site on
Liverpool's famous waterfront. ENER-G will
also operate and maintain the plant for 17
years.
The CHP system is split between a plant
room in the new building and the historic
Great Western Railway (GWR) Goods Shed
on Liverpool's picturesque waterfront.
ENER-G is converting the Goods Shed into
a state-of-the-art energy centre with
sophisticated remote monitoring and full
diagnostic facilities.
ENER-G has designed and manufactured
two 385kWe bio-diesel CHP units, two
768kWe natural gas CHP systems and
installed two 850kWe boilers, an 1000kWe
absorption chiller and a 998kWe conventional
compression chiller which will serve all the
new museum's energy needs.
Challenges faced by ENER-G included pre-
serving the GWR building exterior in line with
planning conditions as the site is part of a pro-
tected view and designing the energy centre
to operate independently of the utility electri-
cal supply.
The CHP system generates electricity and
recovers the majority of the heat created in
the process. In conventional power stations
this heat is simply wasted into the atmosphere
through power station cooling towers, much
energy is also lost along the many miles of
electrical distribution cables needed to bring
the power to site.
Instead, by using CHP to generate electric-
ity on site the heat is used to provide heating
and hot water for the museum in the winter,
and air conditioning and chilled water via the
absorption cooling system in the summer
months. The utility grid supply will provide
additional back up, if required.
www.energ-group.com
The GWR Building housing the CHP plant
will also become an educational resource in
its own right with a small visitor facility where
groups can gain an understanding of the tech-
nology and its contribution to the museum's
sustainability.
The complex energy facilities project, which
was funded by the Co-operative bank was
awarded the Combined Heat and Power
Association's Innovation Award for 2009 is
helping NML boost both its cost and carbon
performance.
The museum has been designed to replace
the former Museum of Liverpool Life. It pro-
vides 8,000 square metres of public space
across three floors and demonstrates
Liverpool's unique contribution to the world. It
showcases popular culture while tackling
social, historical and contemporary issues.

Fuel polishing -
the way forward
I
n January 2011 the EU changed the fuel
specification, ensuring all liquid gas oil has
a 7% bio-diesel content (FAME). Due to
the three Biofuel renewable energy and
fuel quality directives, bio-diesel use in fuel
has increased dramatically in Europe.
Although the EU aims for more sustainable
fuel, the chemical composition of biodiesel
causes a number of fuel quality issues,
including poor fuel stability, microbiological
contamination and an acceleration of fuel
decay.
In particular, the hygroscopic nature of bio-
diesel significantly increases the saturation
level, meaning the water content in fuel is well
above the maximum specified level. This
causes many concerns, which worsen if the
fuel tank is outside or not in a temperature
controlled environment
Waxing, sludge, bacterial infections,
sediments and other foreign matter all cause
issues; however it is water in fuel which is at
the root of microbial growth.
These microbial contaminations can lead to
corrosion of pipe work, cause fuel blockages
and cause damage to the tanks and the
engines injectors. Furthermore the lack of
lubricant in biodiesel decreases engine
efficiency.
This increases the temperature, causing
component wear, wasting electricity and
potentially damaging the quality fuel as well.
This can lead to back-up generator failure
when its running during an emergency
situation. All generator suppliers suggest
testing the units on a weekly/monthly basis;
however these tests do not pick up on the
issue of poor quality fuel.
The fuel must be laboratory tested (ideally
every 6 months) and the fuel quality should be
closely analysed. UK fuel testing laboratories
and companies like WASP offer this service. If
a test reveals the fuel is out of specification
(has contamination), in most cases a fuel
polishing process can resolve the issue.
Fuel without biodiesel naturally decays, and
could be out of specification after 6-12
months. However, bio-diesel causes fuel to
decay much faster than mineral based fuel
(with pure biodiesel decaying after a few
weeks).
It is therefore recommended blended fuels
are only stored for up to 6 months to reduce
contamination issues.
To prevent fuel contamination occurring,
WASP PFS Ltd and the CONCAWE group
suggests applying strict good fuel house-
keeping practices to ensure these challenges
are controlled and prevented. These practices
include purchasing good quality fuel, using a
fuel polishing process and testing the fuel
every 6 months. Furthermore, using a fuel
polishing process can prolong the usable life
of fuel.
Fuel polishing is the innovative technological
cleaning process used to remove water,
bacterial infection, sludge, and solid and
semi-solid contaminates from diesel and
similar middle distillate fuels (gas and fuel oil,
MDO, etc).
The design of the systems aim to maintain
optimum fuel quality in diesel when stored for
the medium to long term; preventing the fuel
causing generator failures during an
emergency situation.
Those organisations which invest in
generators to ensure complete continuity,
need to consider backup generator failure as
part of their business continuity plan.
With reports about the 2% slack in the
system causing unplanned blackouts and
power cuts, it is essential for organisations to
start thinking about ensuring their generator is
supported.
Currently blue-chip organisations, data
centres, yacht builders, generator suppliers,
hospitals and the military all invest in fuel
polishing to ensure complete continuity.
Furthermore by ensuring the fuel in storage
is kept in optimum confusion, a large saving in
potential carbon emissions can be had.
Without fuel polishing, the alternative is to
dispose of your fuel, at a cost both in
monetary and carbon terms. Moreover, more
fuel will need to be produced, purchased and
delivered to your site again, a large
monetary and carbon emission cost.
By utilising the efficiencies of a fuel polishing
system, all of these costs can be avoided.
WASP customises their systems depending
on the customers fuel flow rate, tank size,
required features, specifications and design
needs.
A fuel polishing system costs significantly
less than a replacement tank of fuel; it
increases efficiency and power, reduces
costs, reduces carbon emissions and benefits
the environment.
With 21 years of experience and expertise,
WASPs systems are designed using the
latest unrivalled technologies, unique control
systems and advanced sensing systems to
ensure simplicity and efficiency as well as
maximum protection against fuel-related
breakdowns.

A
s a PPP scheme, the project was
clearly focused not only on quality
and cost at the time of build but on
whole life costs and longevity.
When it came to specifying standby power
for Victoria Hospital, therefore, the competitive
tendering process examined the purchase
cost, performance and ongoing management
and maintenance regimes for the proposed
generator systems.
It was Glasgow-based Dieselec Thistle with
its local technical support and proposal to
introduce a SCADA supervisory control
system to the standby power set up that won
the contract and the company worked closely
with both the client to enhance and deliver the
specification.
George Hobbins from Dieselec Thistle tells
UKPN: While technically this was a hospital
extension, the brief was like that of a new build
and the standby power was to service the
entire site and be housed in a completely new
energy centre alongside the hospitals boilers,
biomass plant and CHP.
For this state-of-the-art hospital our remit
was to design a state-of-the-art solution that
would minimise cost, disruption and
maintenance while providing a failsafe against
any interruptions to the hospitals power
supply.
The power requirements for the new
Victoria Hospital called for three 1,250 Kva
high voltage standby generators to operate
simultaneously with a fourth identical
generator also specified as a double standby
to enable any one of the four to be out of
action for repairs or maintenance.
Dieselec Thistle developed the specification
which included 12m long 70dba noise
attenuation enclosures, dual redundant starter
motors and dual batteries.
The company also designed a full pro-logic
control system (PLC) to ensure seamless
automatic trigger of the standby power system
if the main power supply should fail and share
the load efficiently across the three duty
standby generators.
George continues: The whole configuration
was designed to include as many dual safety
precautions as possible so that there is always
a plan B in place if for any reason the standby
generators should fail.
In a hospital environment, particularly
where there are acute services, this belt and
braces approach is simply best practice.
The SCADA system integrated with the
standby generators provides a further
safeguard at Victoria Hospital as this monitors
the equipment at all times, alerting the
maintenance team of any warnings and
providing fault diagnostics so that any issues
can be tackled quickly.
Colin Macrae from Consort Healthcare
says: A system like this not only provides
peace of mind in terms of effective standby
power, it also dramatically reduces the
maintenance burden. Manual testing is not
required, routine maintenance is reduced and
reactive maintenance is both timely and
targeted.
The generators were manufactured at FG
Wilsons factory in Larne, Northern Ireland
and underwent a thorough witnessed load
test before being dispatched to Fife.
The tests provided Dieselec Thistle with
valuable information about small adjustments
required to the control system so that these
could be implemented prior to installation on
site in Fife.
Dieslec Thistle carried out the full electrical
and mechanical installation for all four
generators, including the installation of remote
control stations in all the substations around
the hospital which are controlled directly by
the PLC via a dual fibre optic network to
provide automatic control of the HV network.
Once the generators were completely
installed, they underwent a very rigorous and
fully documented testing programme prior to
commissioning.
Commissioning has now been completed
ready for the transfer of services to the new
building in December 2011 and official
opening of the fully operational hospital early
in 2012.
Dieselec Thistle has been awarded the
maintenance contract for the standby power
services by Consort Healthcare as part of the
ongoing PPP hospital management
programme.
Colin Macrae adds: Ongoing system
management is just as vital as initial
specification and installation.
Hopefully our requirements for standby
power will be few and far between but were
confident that we have the automated controls
and proven expertise in place to ensure our
standby generators are completely reliable if
and when that need does arise.

T
he FCL suppresses the damaging
currents which result from electricity
distribution network faults thereby
increasing network capability and
reliability.
Developed and manufactured by GridON with
its Australian partner the Wilson Transformer
Company, this innovative state-of-the-art FCL
enables the cost-effective growth and
increased flexibility of electricity distribution
systems.
Removing the fault level constraints without
costly network upgrades enables the
installation of more low carbon and other
electricity generation directly onto the
distribution system, with shorter connection
times and reduced connection costs.
It also enables smart distribution networks
with increased network efficiency, flexibility,
reliability and resilience.
The breakthrough in design removes the
need for superconducting components which
results in a simple, reliable and low
maintenance solution.
It is fully scaleable for use at all voltage
levels on both distribution and transmission
systems. This will potentially help minimise
the costs of upgrading the UKs electricity
distribution and transmission networks over
the next 20 to 30 years.
The design is based on combining industry-
standard, proven transformer technology with
GridONs unique and proprietary concept of
magnetic flux alteration to saturate the iron
core.
GridONs device offers performance benefits
including instant, self-triggering response to a
fault, immediate recovery following clearance
of the fault without network interruption, and
suppression of multiple consecutive faults.
It is the first such fully tested, commercially
viable non superconducting presaturated fault
current limiter.
The FCL has been comprehensively tested
by a certified high power laboratory in
Australia, where it underwent more than 50
fault tests, before being shipped to the UK.
The FCL is now in service on the 11kV
distribution network and it will be
demonstrated in operation for two years.
UK Power Networks has fully approved the
design and testing, and for the purposes of the
demonstration, is acting as network operation
customer. E.ONs New Build & Technology
division is providing technical assurance
expertise and network modelling support.
Nick Eraut, ETI Project Manager - Energy
Storage & Distribution, tells UKPN:
Upgrading the UK electricity distribution
network to meet radically changing
requirements will potentially cost tens of bil-
lions of pounds over the next 20 to 30 years.
This investment is critical to ensuring that we
have a system that is able to support a range
of energy technologies now in development.
This is the first of two FCL developments
commissioned and funded by the ETI. We
believe that GridONs new FCL will offer major
advantages to distribution network operators
and suppliers of distributed generation
equipment.
Yoram Valent, co-founder and Chief
Executive of GridON, said: The successful
commissioning of GridONs fully-tested FCL
into service on UK Power Networks system
demonstrates the potential for increasing
generation and network connectivity, and for
significant cuts in system upgrade costs, by
providing operators and network designers
with FCLs as part of their toolkit.
He continues: The ever-increasing network
complexity, competitive power markets,
rapidly growing intermittent renewable supply
and aging infrastructure conspire to challenge
system operators daily.
Our use of well-established manufacturing
technology and our products inherent
simplicity and minimal maintenance require-
ments, combined with its superior fit-to-
purpose performance, will significantly cut
capital expenditures and operating costs and
extend the useful life of existing network
assets.
Martin Wilcox, Head of Future Networks, UK
Power Networks commented: High fault
levels impact both how we operate and the
connection offers we are able to provide to
generation customers.GridONs fault current
limiter looks to be a good solution to avoid
having to replace switchgear prematurely or
unnecessary interruptions to customers
supplies.
The similarity in design to our existing
transformer fleet minimises additional impact
on our operation and maintenance teams. It
should also enable us to better work with
generation customers to provide the best
value solution on fault level constrained parts
of our network.
Andrew Ellis, Head of Electrical Power
Engineering at E.ON New Build &
Technology, concludes: Active fault current
management through fault current limiters is
an ideal way forward in mitigating the risks,
both technically and commercially.
www.eti.co.uk
We expect that the FCL device that has
been developed under this project will take
us much closer to the realisation of a viable
solution for our distribution networks and dis-
tributed generation projects.

E
nergy security has climbed to the top
of the business agenda, as shifting
government policies towards other
fuel sources are persuading
industrial users to invest in localised gas
generation.
The economic case is compelling.
Combined Heat and Power (CHP) has
become one of the most profitable ways that
companies can use to reduce their energy
bills, providing heat to the site and achieving
cost savings of between 15% - 40% over
conventional electricity. (Source: CHPA).
Manufacturing plants and major new office
buildings which strive for security from the
grid, can embed gas engines on site,
positioned close to suitable heat loads and / or
sources of low cost fuel.
It is in Europe where the use of gas engines
for power generation is growing rapidly.
Andrew Stone, Director of Energy Solutions
at Cummins, says EMEA is their biggest sales
region for gas engines globally.
Stone believes in keeping the proposition to
new customers simple. He says: We are not
selling an engine, we are selling a solution.
Richard Holdsworth, Global Marketing
Manager, Lubricants at Shell believes there is
a shift towards independent back up power
and a real move away from heavy fuel
towards gas. He believes LNG will become an
alternative option to heavy fuel in many parts
of the world.
But the focus of this particular research is
on the expanding use of gas engines for the
power generation market in Europe, where
two thirds of all gas engines are sold,
accounting for some 3800 MW of power.
(Source: TSW).
To study whole of market, The Strategy
Works conducted interviews with companies
involved in different parts of the supply chain
split into these defined sectors:
O&Ms (operating and maintaining fleets of
gas engines);
OEMs (manufacturers of gas engines)
Gas Engine Oil Manufacturers (selling
lubricating oil for gas engines);
Gas Engine Oil Additives Manufacturers
(selling additives to gas engine oil manufact-
urers).
There is no reliable public domain data for
sales of gas engines as trade statistics are not
(discretely) logged.
Also engine manufacturers are now
understandably nervous about sharing data
because recent acquisitions have tended to
concentrated manufacturing capacity,
prompting a 2011 EEA monopolies
investigation.
Combining desk research with interviews
conducted, TSW estimates that global annual
gas engine sales (over 500kW in power)
exceed 6,000 MW per annum, of which 64%
is in EMEA at over 3,800 MW. (Chart Source:
TSW)
In fact Europe, apart from accounting for
two thirds of global sales, is also the epicentre
for production of gas engines with CAT having
relocated their excellence centre (for gas
engines) to MWM in Mannheim and GE
confirming that 90% of their worldwide sales
of gas engines are manufactured by
Jenbacher in Austria. Another large USA
manufacturer Cummins has 42% of its gas
engine sales in EMEA.
Germany is a particularly important market
for biogas with rapid take up because of
feed-in tariff incentives. This is confirmed by
Sharanie Patterson, Category Portfolio
Manager for Power Generation, Natural Gas
Engine Oils at Petro-Canada. She comments:
Our largest market would be Germany,
which is the biggest market in biogas, followed
by the UK. Germany has large potential with
some 7,000 gas engines right now running on
biogas. Our focus is going to be on Germany,
UK, France, Spain, Italy. Gas Engines is a
category that is growing double digit every
year
The growth in biogas is recognised by
Philippe Poudou, Product Line Manager IEO
Specialities EAME at Oronite In Germany the
production from biogas increased by almost
20% in 2011 Source: Biogas Barometer,
EUROBSERVER December 2012.
Kirill Chervyakov, Industrial Marketing
Advisor, Mobil Industrial Lubricants, agrees:
Germany, Italy and Benelux are our main
markets for gas engine oils in Europe.
Germany has developed a strong biogas
market and Benelux is using gas engines
extensively for their greenhouse operations.
Frank Merbitz, (Chief) Applications
Consultant at Addinol echoes these views in a
recent interview:
Europe is most important to us as there
are more gas engines than in other places,
especially in Eastern European countries like
the Czech Republic, Bulgaria or Estonia, but
also in Italy and in Germany. Nowadays it
accounts for a large share of our total turnover
and its growing still.
Michael Wagner, Marketing Director of
leading engine manufacturer Jenbacher
explains: Western Europe and secondly
Eastern Europe are still our traditional seg-
ments. Germany and Italy are historically
among the important segments for us
Maxim Donde, LLK (Lukoil) General
Director in Russia also sees the growth in gas
engines. The dynamics of sales is positive.
Market volume of these oils around the world
is growing at about 5% per year, which is
associated with an increase in the number of
working gas engines
David Burke, Service Director of leading
O&M Clarke Energy who maintain 300
engines in the UK and has installed units with
over 2,750 MW capacity worldwide, confirms
the drivers in the UK The two big markets
now are natural gas for combined heat and
power and the anaerobic digestion biogas
markets.
In general we see that there is a lot of
growth in gas engines and especially on the
natural gas side. says Mark Hensen, Senior
Product Line Manager Energy, of Q8Oils.
TSW estimates that to total installed capac-
ity of gas engines in EMEA is 40GW and is
growing at around 8% per year.
Based on average oil consumption figures
this equates to over 270 million litres per year
for gas engine oil within EMEA making the
EMEA market alone worth around 500m
(US$750m) for lubricant.

With gas back in vogue as the fuel of choice for power
generation, gas engines are newly resurgent as a power

reports Michael Herson of The Strategy Works.

2MWe is proving a popular choice with
unbeatable longevity and efficiency.
On the UKs largest waste Anaerobic
Digestion facility at Cannock, Edina have
installed three 2MWe containerised units
which are operating at full output.
Recently, Anglian Water and Edina UK
entered into a 5-year contract for the supply of
gas-powered generating equipment
manufactured by MWM GmbH of Mannheim
Germany.
A number of fully-containerised generating
sets are being supplied over a five year
period.
Although initially manufactured in Germany,
the actual containerisation of the gensets
takes place in Edinas key manufacturing
centre in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.
The first six gensets were delivered and
installed by December 2010 and were fully
operational by early 2011.
This first order involved the design, build,
installation and long term maintenance of 2 x
TCG 2020(V16) and 4 x TCG 2016(V12)
gensets to meet Anglian Waters commitment
to the AMP 5 Biosolids programme.
The choice of both these engine types was
based on the highly-regarded and market
leading qualities - namely, their efficiency and
durability in biogas operation. Another
incentive was the through-life support
package for which Edina is widely known.
One of Edinas most renowned energy
projects involved providing a MWM 1.56MWe

Medium voltage
& Smart Grids
I
t has been recognised in every country
that economic growth is heavily dependent
upon the reliable delivery of electricity to
the customer, whether that is a bulk
industrial, commercial, or residential
customer.
Further, efficiently using every source of
generation including "green" sources has
become a mandate of many countries.
The utility industry today is challenged to
improve power quality, availability, reliability
and economics in order to avoid costly
interruptions of service to all levels of
customers.
In the USA this started in the 1960s shortly
after the electric grid infrastructure build out
came to the point of interconnecting most of
the power delivery systems.
It was realized that reliability would be
increased if an operations centre was
monitoring and controlling the distribution
network, the term Distribution Automation was
coined to describe that goal.
Many utilities installed SCADA systems so
their operations centre could evaluate the
status of the distribution substation and
attempt restoration of the faulted circuits.
However, it was quickly realised that more
detailed monitoring was needed and
increased abilities to sectionalise circuit faults
were required. Sectionalisers and Reclosers
with control and communications were
developed for this task but they too were
limited by the technology available at that
time.
One problem the 100+ year old utility industry
has suffered from was the traditional view of
how the grid is designed to operate instead of
how it could operate.
The prolonged effect of short circuit faults on
sensitive equipment supplied by distribution
feeders can lead to their failure and significant
losses. This is pushing the requirements for
the performance of distribution protection
systems and making them similar
to transmission protection systems
requirements.
The improvement of power quality during
short-circuit faults can be achieved in several
different ways. Like any other problem that
has to be solved, we need first to understand
the nature of the problem and its effect on
sensitive users.
The most common short circuit faults in the
system single-phase to ground faults are
characterised by the fact that they introduce a
voltage sag in the faulted phase, and at the
same time they result in a voltage swell in the
two healthy phases. This is clearly seen in
Figure 1 which shows the recorded waveform
and the voltage phasor diagram for a single-
phase to ground fault.
The case of two or three-phase faults is quite
different. For three-phase faults all phases
experience a voltage sag, while for a two-
phase fault - the two faulted phases will have
lower voltages, with the healthy phase without
a significant change compared to the pre-fault
levels.
Fig. 2 shows a plot of depth vs. duration of
actual cases from a typical high-volume
manufacturing plant, with some of them
resulting in process shutdown due to variable
speed drives and vacuum pumps failures.
There are several factors that determine the
voltage level during a short circuit fault on the
transmission or distribution system:
System configuration
Fault location
Fault resistance
The first characteristic of voltage sag the
depth is something that we cant control, but
we have to study in order to be able to predict
or estimate the effects of different faults on the
sensitive equipment.
The second characteristic of the voltage sag
the duration is the parameter that we can
control by properly applying the advanced
features of a state-of-the-art distribution
automation system using modern reclosers
and sectionalisers with digital protection and
communications.
Using the industry standard IEC 61850 and
especially the use of GOOSE messages in
distributed protection schemes can reduce
the fault clearing time of these distribution sys-
tems.
Reclosers [see diagram right] have evolved
into multifunctional fault clearing systems.
They contain all of the components of a
traditional substation fault clearing system but
within an optimised footprint which can be
mounted on a single distribution pole.
Further, the interrupter of these systems can
be operated as independent pole or ganged
3-pole operator depending on the system
conditions and configuration requirements.
Each reclose operation can be adapted in
both protection element and setting applied
and even change logic based on evolving
fault conditions.
One system can even test the line segment
for a persistent fault by applying a reduced
current pulse to the line and measuring the
response.

to limit the damage to connected equipment

synchronising with the mains or
utility supply, the DSE7570 Synch
Lock enables maintenance or
service work to be carried out on substations
or circuit breakers etc., without interrupting the
supply.
Recent in-depth testing of the new Synch
Lock product was carried out at two different
locations in the UK:
DSEs own manufacturing facility in North
Yorkshire boasts a three-set synchronising &
load sharing system that provides power to
the factory in the event of a mains power
failure.
This live application was used to put the
DSE7570 through its paces during a two-day
testing program, where onsite engineers were
able to simulate a wide range of different
application requirements.
The second set of testing was performed
on-site at a customer location in the UK and
again took place over the course of two days.
The testing, once again was performed on a
live system that took the DSE7570 through all
aspects of its features and functions.
Throughout both testing periods the
DSE7570 performed outstandingly well with
no issues, reports the manufacturer.
The DSE7570 is contained within a
portable, hard-shell, plastic case, and is light
enough to be hand-carried making it easy to
transport from site to site [bottom right].
This proven and reliable technology is said
to be ideal for the rental market where
companies are often called upon to provide
generator hire sets, or temporary sets, at
short notice, and also allows them to carry out
emergency repairs or maintenance work
without interrupting the power supply.
The powerful ARM microprocessor
contained within the module allows for the
incorporation of a range of complex features:
Text based LCD display (supporting
multiple languages).
True RMS Voltage, Current and Power
monitoring.
Fully configurable inputs for use as alarms
or a range of different functions.
The Synch Lock module can be installed up
to a distance of 200m away from the controller
allowing for a high level of installation flexibility
to suit multiple applications where access
may be awkward or restricted.
Alterations can be made to selected
operational sequences, timers and alarms
making the DSE7570 truly flexible, says DSE.
The DSE7570 forms part of a larger family
of Load Sharing and Synchronising modules
which are designed and manufactured
entirely by DSE at its UK facility in North
Yorkshire and supplied throughout the world.
Other modules in the DSE Load Sharing
and Synchronising range include many
features, for example: 32-set synchronising;
Dead Bus Synchronising; and Multiple
communication options, including Ethernet
Communications & DSEWebNet.

Power Cube
H
IMOINSAs key product, the Power
Cube Generator, really says it all in
the name in terms of its size and
shape. According to its
manufacturer, the Power Cube offers a
remarkbly high degree of adaptability.
Where there is reduced space available it
can be easily adapted to suit those projects
where 20-foot containers cannot be used.
It offers the addition advantage of being
certified by the International Convention for
Safe Containers (CSC), allowing the consign-
ment of two units by sea, as though it were a
standard 20-foot container.
The Power Cube offers 500kW in 10 feet,
with 50kW power/foot, a considerable power
density which allows extreme optimisation of
logistics and unit handling, reports HIMOINSA
The set is prepared to be synchronised and
give extra power, always in ISO sizes of 20' ,
for 1000kw, 30' for 1500kw, 40' for 2000kw,
and upwards. The generating set has an elec-
tric fan which allows reduction of acoustic
emissions and means the unit can be used in
residential areas and events.
In these kinds of scenarios where high
power is required and low noise generation is
required, there is often little space available
which is where this compact unit comes into
its own In addition, self-sufficiency is ensured
by rapid external fuel inlets.
Another of the leading products in the
HIMOINSA rental range is the HRTW 1300
dual frequency container, said to be ideal for
use in IPP (Interim Power Plant), rental,
mining, construction, quarrying and ports,
among others. With the efficiency of dual
frequency, the same equipment can generate
both at 50 Hz and 60 Hz, reports HIMOINSA.
The HRTW 1300 dual frequency container
is said to offer considerable advantages in
comparison with other types of products
which also operate in this sector.
It has a variable speed fan to reduce fuel
consumption and noise emission, as well as a
system for interior lighting, which ensures total
accessibility for cleaning and maintenance.
Earlier in 2013, HIMOINSAs production
centres in Spain played host to their North
American distributors for a few days.
Himoinsa Power Systems (HIPOWER),
HIMOINSAs US unit, held its II Convention in
Spain, home of the energy multinationals
headquarters.
Attending were Canadian entrepreneurs
from Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British
Columbia, mainly from the oil industry, along
with US distributors from states such as
California, Texas, New York,
Virginia, Missouri, Dakota,
Louisiana, Connecticut,
Rhode Island, Masachusset,
Illinois, Washington and New
Jersey. Himoinsa Power
Systems has grown 900% in
the last four years and
expects revenue to reach
US$100m by 2015.
The company used the
convention to show its main
distributors the key features
of the HIMOINSA production
process and the advantages
offered by the generator sets
and those other electrical
distribution products recently
launched on the market.
HIPOWER Chairman Rafael
Acosta was pleased with the
visit by the companys main
distributors and took the
opportunity to explain the
current state of the North
American energy industry.
"We have operations in a
number of markets. The
industrial standby market, the
main target of this years convention, is
organised through distributors, normally one
per state said Acosta, who added that
HIPOWER is involved in the Rental market,
where we sell to National Accounts - i.e. large
rental firms in the USA."
HIMOINSA Spain serves Europe, Africa
and the Middle East. The production plant in
India manufactures for the Indian market, and
the one in China for Asia and Australasia.
HIPOWER is the production centre set up to
cater for the US and Canada," says the CEO,
Francisco Gracia.
On the first day of the convention, the 30
guests attended a series of conferences,
presided over by HIPOWERs Sales
Manager, Marcelo Oliveira.
He comments: The North American power
market has grown since the economic slump
of 2008, with 80% of this growth driven by
emergency-standby power supply,
The convention also served as a platform
for FPT to unveil its new Tier 4 engines in
response to the emissions and air quality
requirements of the US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA).
The second or final phase of the Tier 4
regulations will come into effect in 2014,
specifically Tier 4B, with which Particulate
matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) will be
reduced by 90% compared to Tier 3 levels
explained Fabio Berton, Power Generation
international OEM's Manager at FPT.
He concludes: We have been "working
with HIMOINSA for over 20 years now and
think the company has done an excellent job
carving out a strategic niche for itself in the
international power generation market.

Loadbanks -
essential for all
E
very day across industries worldwide,
power failure or disturbance leads to
loss of valuable data, waste of raw
materials, decreases in productivity,
increases in production time.
The consequential losses are immense and
the cost to insurers staggering. But these
could be drastically reduced by making the
use of a loadbank a condition of insurance.
A full test using a loadbank is essential for
business continuity planning and should be
completed before any assumption of risk.
This is a very important aspect of overall risk
management as most power failures are as a
result of human error, poor maintenance or
planning, rather than war, terrorism or natural
disasters.
Initially, there should be a witness test of the
performance of the standby system following
its installation and commissioning or any
major upgrade. The witness test should
include:
Black starting to ensure that in the event of
a mains power failure the standby system is
capable of taking up the full load within a time
frame of ten to fifteen seconds of the
generator starting. This is done by using the
loadbank to mimic the full operational load of
the building or process.
* Using the loadbank to simulate power fail-
ure under full demand to ensure that the con-
trols and switch panels work as expected in
real conditions, and that the automatic transfer
switch that regulates the main loads continues
to operate in sequence.
* Testing the generator on full load at
optimum operating temperature to reduce the
chances of wet stacking which can cause
engine failure.
Crestchic recently successfully completed a
50MVA test for an onshore oil pumping station
in the Far East.
Commissioning offshore and marine
propulsion turbines using loadbanks is essen-
tial, as a failure can be difficult and expensive
to rectify once the platform is at sea.
The testing involves incremental steps up to
full load, to check turbine parameters for both
fuel consumption and different types of fuel. In
addition, monitoring vibration, temperature
and airflow will ensure peak efficiency once
the facility is on station and working to
capacity.
At the same time, it is possible to simulate
the effect of a large block load being
introduced or withdrawn, e.g. a pump or
compressor, measuring the recovery interval
(transient response) until the engine speed
returns to normal. This simulation mitigates
against the risk that the engine does not
recover and the alternator fails.
* To test at conditions replicating a lagging
power factor and to ensure complete engine
and alternator test; a resistive-reactive
loadbank is essential, says the company.
RESISTIVE REACTIVE LOADBANKS:
Crestchic designs and manufactures a wide
range of fixed or variable power factor
resistive-reactive loadbanks in standard
frames sizes & containers, from 50kVA to
6250kVA, built to a clients specific voltage,
frequency and phase requirements.
All Crestchic loadbanks employ stainless
steel finned elements for maximum heat
dissipation and durability.
AC RESISTIVE LOADBANKS: Crestchic
designs and manufactures a wide range of
air-cooled resistive loadbanks in standard
frames sizes & containers, from 10kW to
6000kW, built to specific voltages, frequency
and phase requirements.
AC MEDIUM VOLTAGE LOADBANKS:
With footprint size a vital consideration in
many markets, the companys MV loadbanks
provide higher voltages with integrated
transformers & loadbanks packaged in one
ISO container. These are available in wide
range of voltages from 600v to 33kV in both
resistive and resistive-reactive configuration.
DC LOADBANKS: Batteries are used
extensively across industry to provide critical
parallel emergency power to essential
systems. The reliable operation of these
batteries is vital.
Crestchics range of DC loadbanks are
specially designed to provide an accurate
load for the discharge of batteries, both
following amps and voltage.
Range from 24v/100A up to 700v/450A;
Dual & multi voltage units available;
Constant current control;

Loadbanks.
It comprises a high performance
microprocessor housed within the loadbank
enclosure providing supervisory operation &
monitoring, along with real-time data
acquisition direct from the loadbank
instrumentation, coupled with either a rugged
field tablet controller or a PC-based interface.

V
arnish has historically been used as a
catch-all term for deposits, either in
the form of sludge or varnish.
Sludge is often described as a soft,
pliable, organic residue that can be easily
removed by wiping, while varnish refers to the
hard, oil insoluble organic residue that is not
easily removed by wiping.
According to a recent ExxonMobil Fuels &
Lubricants survey of 192 gas turbine power
plants with a combined total of 626 gas
turbines, approximately 40% reported current
or historical varnish issues within six years of
oil service life.
Both varnish and sludge form in different
ways and there are many contributing factors
to their formation.
Turbines with common hydraulic and
bearing reservoirs are far more susceptible to
unit trips or no-starts related to varnish than
turbines with segregated reservoirs.
Mild varnish can also build on journal and
thrust bearings with little or no impact on
bearing temperatures or shaft rotations. Unit
trips or no-starts are rarely, if ever, reported
due to varnish in turbine bearings.
For these reasons, varnish prevention and
detection should be emphasized on turbines
with common hydraulic and turbine oil
reservoirs compared to turbines with separate
hydraulic and turbine oil reservoirs.
There are three main mechanisms behind
varnish formation: thermal degradation of oil
which can take place at temperatures above
300C; oxidation, a reaction that acts to
decompose the oil; and contamination of the
oil, through either internal or external sources.
While treating the symptoms of varnish
through mitigation technologies may extend
service life, the important factors for reliable
operation involve starting with a clean system
and using a turbine oil designed to prevent
varnish from forming.
In general, higher group base stocks
blended with advanced technology additives
offer the best first line against varnish.
To select a well-balanced gas turbine
lubricant, maintenance personnel should
consider the following performance areas:
* Deposit Control: As mentioned earlier,
varnish can be generated by thermal
degradation, oxidation and contamination.
Some oils generate more deposits than
others, but advanced turbine oils are
formulated to limit the generation of sludge
and varnish, while keeping deposits in
suspension.
* Oxidation Stability Turbine bearing
temperatures approaching 250C, in
combination with equipment metals,
contaminants and entrained air all contribute
to the oxidation process, which precedes
varnish formation.
To combat this, operators should look for
higher level turbine oil base stocks and
advanced antioxidants which can provide
protection against oxidation when properly
formulated.
* Air Release and Foam Control: Entrained
air in an oil with inferior air release
performance may be compressed in turbine
bearings or high pressure hydraulics, causing
adiabatic compression (a.k.a. micro-
dieseling).
Similarly, excessive surface-level foaming
can accelerate oxidation and lead to
operational issues, such as the inability to
measure lubricant levels correctly, or reservoir
overflow from vents.
Oils formulated to have rapid air release
and minimal foam formation will provide
superior protection against the formation of
varnish.
* Filterability: The filterability of a fluid can
be defined as its ability to pass through a filter
with minimal pressure drop. Oils with poor
filterability will pollute filters faster that those
with good filterability. This often translates into
more frequent filter changes.
* Anti-Rust and Corrosion protection:
Rust and corrosion can also contribute to oxi-
dation and the formation of contaminant-
based varnish. Oils formulated to minimise
rust and corrosion will reduce the likelihood of
varnish formation.
* Wear on high pressure hydraulics, the
gears of the accessory gearbox, generator
reduction gear or turning gear, can have a
direct impact on gas turbine performance.
Wear material from these components can
indirectly be a source of varnish formation,
since the wear metals will act as an oxidation
catalyst.
ExxonMobil Fuels & Lubricants has recently
introduced Mobil DTE 932 GT, a
gas turbine oil which can help power
operators to increase productivity by reducing
unscheduled downtime.
Across a wide range of testing procedures,
Mobil DTE 932 GT was shown to deliver
critical performance benefits such as the
potential for greatly reduced varnish
formation, enhanced turbine performance and
durability.
As a result, Mobil DTE 932 GT meets or
exceeds the standards for General Electric
frame 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 turbines.
Other performance benefits of Mobil DTE
932 GT include exceptional high temperature
performance, outstanding deposit control,
excellent foam control and air release.
Once the appropriate lubricant is selected, it
is imperative that its in-service performance is
monitored via a proactive oil analysis
program.
Generally, sampling and testing should be
done at least quarterly, and it is usually
beneficial to perform it more frequently as the
oil condition degrades.
Todays available historical oil analysis test-
ing methods cannot accurately predict var-
nish, although the industry has been working
to develop methods to better predict varnish in
gas turbine hydraulic systems with a
combination of Ultra Centrifuge (UC),
Membrane Patch Colorimetry (MPC) and
Linear Sweep Voltammetry (RULER) tests.

Look at whats in
the pipeline
T
he growth in interest in hydro-electric
power schemes amongst both energy
companies and private estates over
recent years has been matched by a
new enthusiasm for PE pipe as a penstock
material.
The fact is that the market is shifting towards
PE penstocks. This is a positive trend for both
the PE pipe sector and the long-term viability
of hydro schemes.
Anecdotal evidence from this years British
Hydro Association Conference in Glasgow
indicates that there is still some distance to go
before hydro scheme developers & designers
realise all the potential benefits which can be
achieved by working closely with a PE
supplier.
The feedback from the conference was that
specifiers are still selecting PE pipe based on
generic calculations and selecting the material
as a commodity item from stock through
builders merchants.
While the merchant supply chain is reliable
and the level of design experience that can be
expected from the specifier is considerable,
this specification route can sometimes leave
out one substantial source of expertise: the
PE pipe manufacturer.
Not only can the manufacturers advise on the
suitability of pipe diameter and thickness for
any installation, they can also advise on the
most appropriate accessories, variations in
pipe size and diameter to match required flow
rates and pressure ratings.
Manufacturers may even be able to produce
bespoke sizes of pipe to meet individual
project requirements.
As a result, a PE pipe specialist should be
able to facilitate a successful transition from
concept to completion by advising on design,
specifications and pipeline installation turning
commodity pipe into a tailor-made solution of
maximum efficiency.
In addition to providing a corrosion-free, leak-
free solution, one of the most significant
benefits that PE pipe offers over ductile iron,
concrete or stainless steel is that it has the
flexibility to bend to fit the contours of the
ground into which it is laid.
Given that many, if not most, hydro schemes
are in remote locations where rough and
uneven terrain is a key element of the design
challenge, this is a significant installation and
integrity benefit.
While there may be some sections of the
penstock that require very high pressure
ratings greater than PE pipe can offer, it is
usually feasible to combine sections of PE
with sections of other materials along the
penstock to match the required head at each
point along the route.
When we consider the distance that needs to
be covered by most penstocks this can
provide considerable cost savings as - by
reducing the wall thickness of the pipe
(increasing the SDR) - savings can be made
on material costs.
Those savings do not compromise on the
quality of the installation, instead they offer
true value engineering opportunities by
delivering the flexibility benefits of PE and
reducing the costs.
A PE pipe specialist should be able to
provide a bespoke pipe/fitting fabrication
service to meet the needs of the installation.
At GPS, for example, we can provide
custom-extruded pipe in sizes up to 1200mm
OD along with a range of custom fittings
including butt fusion change pieces, larger
outlet branch saddles or Y sections.
Custom lengths of pipe can also help to
minimise the number of joints needed and
ensure more efficient delivery and installation.
Increasing the length of each section of pipe
can also help to reduce the number of
deliveries required; a significant benefit when
dealing with the logistical challenges of
remote sites and carbon minimisation targets.
While the BIM (Building Information
Management) approach to construction
projects is not being applied in any mandato-
ry sense to power infrastructure projects, the
core philosophy of deriving the greatest value
with the least possible waste by working
collaboratively across the supply, design and
delivery chain is just as relevant.
With no strict standard requirements for
hydro penstock pipe and fittings its clear to
see how easily they can be reduced to the sta-
tus of commodity.
But when the Penstock can often account for
as much as 40% of the total project budget,
surely specifiers should be expecting more
from their PE supplier?

Marioff has received an extended FM Approval for its gas-driven
pump unit (GPU) and a new FM Approval for its sprinkler pump unit
(SPU) for protecting combustion turbines and machinery in
enclosures with its HI-FOG water mist fire protection system.
Marioff, the worlds largest supplier of water mist fire protection
technology and supplier of system solutions worldwide under the
brand HI-FOG, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a
unit of United Technologies Corp.
The new and existing system approvals enable Marioff to provide
water mist fire protection for a wider range of combustion turbine
and machinery configurations in enclosures, while also providing
more flexible system installation criteria.
The maximum ceiling height was extended up to 11 metres,
whereas the maximum protected volume is 1375m3. The nozzle
installation criteria have been simplified because the new approvals
eliminate the need for door nozzles in all cases and allow for the
installation of nozzles at different heights around the turbine, as
specified in the installation guidelines.
In addition to the extended GPU FM Approval, Marioff has
received a new FM Approval for its SPU systems. The same design
and installation criteria apply to both pump systems so they can be
used as backup, if redundancy is required. The new approval enables
Marioff to provide customers with more complete fire protection
solutions for various commercial buildings, including data centres
and other sensitive sites. Spaces housing machinery in these
buildings can now also be protected with the same pump unit.
Close co-operation with a gas turbine manufacturer made it
possible for Marioff to optimize the approval parameters to better
meet specifications and open new opportunities within the sector,
said Dr. Maarit Tuomisaari, senior manager, research, testing &
approvals, Marioff.
Marioff is the worlds largest supplier of water mist fire protection
technology, with unrivalled experience supplying system solutions
worldwide under the brand HI-FOG..
www.marioff.com
HI-FOG is suitable for most types of fires on land and at sea. It
safely controls and suppresses
fire by discharging a fine water
mist at high velocity, using
significantly less water than
traditional sprinkler systems.

With the new UMT-H, SCHURTER is expanding its already
extensive offering of SMD fuses. The letter H in the product name
stands for the high breaking capacity of 1500 A. This high level
makes the time-lag fuse ideal for applications with large short-circuit
currents. Initially having six rated currents from 160 mA to 2 A, and
having rated voltages up to 277 VAC and 250 VDC, this is truly an
all-purpose component, reports SCHURTER. These features and
more make the square-shaped UMT-H a compact alternative to
cylindrical fuses, says the manufacturer. www.schurter.ch.

accepted for examination
An application from QPI Global Ventures
Ltd for the proposed South Hook
combined heat power station (CHP) has
been accepted. The Planning Inspectorate
announced that the application from QPI
Global Ventures Ltd for the proposed
South Hook combined heat power station
(CHP) has been accepted, by the
Secretary of State for Communities and
Local Government, for examination.
The proposed CHP plant will have an
installed capacity of up to 500MWe and
produce sufficient electricity to both
meet the existing Liquefied Natural Gas
terminals power needs and to export
surplus electricity.
The application was submitted on 31
May 2013 and the decision to accept the
application to proceed has been made in
accordance with section 55 of the
Planning Act 2008 (as amended by the

New Technological Priorities for Evolving Gas
Turbine Markets Call for Papers
The IDGTE now invites the submission of abstracts for papers to be presented at its
7th Gas Turbine Conference to be held on 5th and 6th November 2013 at the Holiday
Inn East M1, Milton Keynes. This established and acclaimed international event
offers a unique opportunity to present a paper on the latest developments in gas
turbine engineering, technology and application.
Chris Whitworth, AMPS Technical Consultant, discusses the implications of
changes to the grid code with a number of AMPS members.
T
he requirements for distributed generators embedded within the electrical
network systems of Europe are changing. With more and more power being
generated from embedded renewable technologies there has become a need for the
Network Operators at both transmission (TNO) and distribution (DNO) systems
levels to introduce Grid Codes to ensure a stable and secure electrical supply.
The EU policy for member states (MS) to supply consumers from the lowest cost
source introduced the need to ensure cross-border trading of electrical power
between neighboring member states will not be restricted by conflicting technical
requirements. As a result a common pan-European Grid Code was recognized as a
prerequisite to creating an ideal electrical supply base for a future supply network to
function effectively. In response the EU parliament - working through ACER and
ENTSOe - set the challenge to create a harmonised European Grid Code.
Today this work is reaching a critical phase as the European parliament begins a
process to legitimise a family of Network Codes (NC) aimed at unifying the
electrical power system supply policies of MS countries. For those associated with
supplying equipment destined for embedded power generation equipment the most
significant is Network Code - Requirements for Generators (NC RfG).
There is a progressive time line for the implementation of NC RfG. It is expected
that it will be passed from the European Parliament to MS authorities at the end of
2013. Over the following three year period each MS will consider the
Requirements which are expected to be set in terms of three different
implementation levels, which in simplified terms amount to: Compulsory,
Recommended and Optional.
Between 2014 and 2017 the TNOs and DNOs, along with various appropriate
authoritative bodies within each MS, must translate the Requirements into a set of
Rules to ensure local unique operating conditions are recognised, prevailing power
quality obligations are not compromised, and all connected generators will be able
to support the electrical supply system in a manner that the security and stability of
that supply network will not be compromised.
In the UK (GB region) the route this three year implementation process will follow
is still to be clarified. It could well result in the G59 document no longer existing
and being replaced by an encompassing distribution code.
What is certain is that diesel and gas powered generating sets have a place in the
supply networks of the future, based on their ability to provide a dependable and
flexible power source. But the governing rules for the performance requirements of
engine or turbine driven generators will become stricter when the Requirements
within NC RfG are applied.
It remains to be seen how many subtle variations of the Requirements will result
as a consequence of each MSs local implementation of the various NCs presently
being processed, particularly the most advanced; NC RfG. The final version -
which has been in the public domain for
many months - has requirements for
levels of performance that will most
certainly not be satisfactorily met by the
conventional products being offered
today.
The AMPS Technical Committee and
several AMPS Member companies have
been tracking, debating and feeding
back into the channels associated with
the ACER and ENTSOe led objective.
This has now
i) extended to finding groups involved
in the stakeholder feedback process
ii) discussing specifics to gain clarity
and
iii) extending our understanding of the
strategy and objectives that instigated
the Network Codes initiative.
