Township celebrates first National Night Out
BY HEATHER FIORE
The Hopewell Sun
More than 100 people gathered
at Hopewell Borough Park on
Aug. 6 for Hopewell Townships
first-ever National Night Out,
sponsored by the Hopewell Town-
ship PBA Local 342.
The event was held in conjunc-
tion with Hopewell Fire Depart-
ment, which opened up its
grounds for barbecuing and
other festivities.
National Night Out is becom-
ing a bigger push, and here we
are putting forth an effort to try
to get it going for our town, Sgt.
William Springer said. It has
gained popularity, and we cer-
tainly want to be part of it.
NNO is an annual event de-
signed to strengthen communi-
ties by encouraging neighbor-
hoods to engage in stronger rela-
tionships with each other and
with local law enforcement part-
ners.
The goal is to heighten crime-
prevention awareness and build
support and participation in
local anti-crime programs.
Also known as Americas
Night Out Against Crime, NNO
began in 1984 and is held on the
first Tuesday in August. It was
created by the non-profit organi-
zation National Association of
Town Watch, with an effort to
promote involvement in crime

Various township officials
participate in event
living room and bedroom, all of
which incorporate a variety of
fire and electrical hazards in plain
sight. The trailers primary goal is
to demonstrate how to prevent
and assess fires, if children were
ever put in that predicament, said
John Schafer, township fire fight-
er and EMT.
We teach them about different
hazards around the house, then
explain to them what to do if they
see smoke in the house, he said.
After the smoke comes out, we
ask kids what they should do and
then tell them how to handle the
problem.
The township has been con-
ducting demonstrations in the
trailer since 2003, and adapted a
portable, tabletop version known
as the hazard house to bring to
different venues.
We try to get it out to the
schools if they offer it; we do it at
Bear Tavern Elementary every
year for the entire day, Schafer
said. Its good for the kids; some
of them really like it.
The Ladies Auxiliary of
Hopewell Fire Department also
publicly debuted its second his-
toric Hopewell throw blanket for
the first time at NNO.
The blankets, which are on sale
for $40 each, feature nine of the
boroughs popular landmarks,
said MaryAnne Van Doren, mem-
bership chair.
Proceeds benefit the Hopewell
Fire Department. Blankets can be
purchased by emailing hopewell-
blanket@gmail.com or by calling
(609) 466-3060.
Various township dignitaries
showed up for the event, including
Hopewell Township Mayor Vanes-
sa Sandom and Hopewell Town-
ship Police Chief George Meyer.
Sandy Ferner, president of the
PBA, said he wants to make it an
annual event, and is looking into
hosting it at the Stony Brook Mill-
stone Watershed Association next
year to accommodate a larger
crowd.
Hopefully it will be bigger and
better next year, he said.

CHS teacher named
New Jersey biology
teacher of the year
BY HEATHER FIORE
The Hopewell Sun
Karen Lucci, a 15-year biology
teacher at Hopewell Valley Cen-
tral High School, has been named
New Jerseys Outstanding High
School Biology Teacher of the
Year by the National Association
of Biology Teachers.
Every year, the NABT chooses
a secondary school biology
teacher from each state to be hon-
ored.
Lucci will be recognized at the
NABTs conference in Atlanta in
November, and will receive a mi-
croscope, gift certificates for biol-
ogy teaching materials and other
prizes.
I really appreciate the recog-
nition, but I also know that there
are many teachers in New Jersey
that deserve the same recogni-
tion, so Im happy to represent all
of us, Lucci said.
Lucci, who has a degree in biol-
ogy and a teaching certificate
from Gettysburg College, teaches
ninth grade biology and 12th
grade Advanced Placement biolo-
gy at CHS.
Prior to her tenure at CHS, she
taught at Notre Dame High
School in Lawrenceville, Eastern
High School in Voorhees and the
former West Windsor-Plainsboro
High School.

N
ew Jersey is a gambling state.
Always has been even before
Resorts International opened
its doors as the first legal casino in At-
lantic City in 1978.
Weve had gambling politicians,
gambling speak-easy owners and gam-
bling residents from the beginning.
We embrace the culture.
Atlantic City, to us, isnt some for-
bidden place where only degenerates
and low-lifes go to satiate a fix. Its a
place where adults, young and old, go
to stay and play.
Casinos are part of our upbringing.
Whether we frequent them or not,
theyre always in our minds. They
highlight the skyline of the coast and
hog a significant portion of our news.
So its no surprise that New Jersey
wants more.
This year, gaming in the state will
enter a new dimension when a ban on
internet gambling is lifted. 888 Hold-
ings, a London-based gaming compa-
ny, will provide its technology to Cae-
sars Interactive Entertainment and
will also launch operations under its
own brand later this year.
The company is doing the same in
Nevada and Delaware, two states,
which maybe not coincidentally
have the other thing that New Jersey
wants: Sports gambling.
Just last week, Congressmen Frank
LoBiondo and Frank Pallone hit the
campaign trail for sports gambling
in Atlantic City, professing the need
for two bills they re-introduced in Feb-
ruary.
Theres a federal ban on the practice
in states not named Nevada, Delaware,
Oregon and Montana, but these legis-
lators and others in the state are
hoping to overturn that law. The Third
Circuit Court of Appeals is currently
hearing an appeal regarding it.
Legal and gaming experts say they
feel fairly certain that, at some point,
the federal law will be overturned and
sports betting will be legal in New Jer-
sey.
And we cant wait for that day. Not
because we want to place a sports bet
legally at a window in Atlantic City,
exactly, but because it will finally help
end the hypocrisy around the discus-
sion. Millions, maybe even billions, of
dollars are being bet on sports in this
country every year, most of it illegally.
Why its OK to do so in Nevada, or as
close as Delaware, and not New Jersey,
is beyond our comprehension.
If we can have casinos that are high-
ly regulated by an independent agency,
why cant we also have betting on
sports? Its a practice that makes sense
to legalize, tax and control.
Ready to gamble (some more)
Now is not the time for New Jersey to fold em in fight for more gambling

Eric Miller to scale Mt. Kilimanjaro to honor epilepsy survivors
Did you know that one in 26 people will
develop epilepsy in their lifetime? Thats
three times more prevalent than autism.
And, did you know that 50,000 people die
each year from epilepsy prolonged
seizures, sudden unexpected death in
epilepsy, and epilepsy related causes (i.e. ac-
cidental drowning)? Thats a greater num-
ber than drunk driving, breast cancer, pre-
scription overdoses or skin cancer. Taking
Epilepsy Awareness to New Heights is a
campaign designed to raise awareness and
spread facts about epilepsy. Partnering
with the two largest organizations in the
epilepsy community (CURE: Citizens Un-
tied for Research in Epilepsy and The
Epilepsy Foundation), epilepsy advocate
Eric Miller will scale Mt. Kilimanjaro in
Tanzania, Africa, to honor those living
with and lost to epilepsy, including his wife
Carolina.
Carolina Miller passed away tragically
in August 2011 from SUDEP when she was
only 25 years old.
This climb of Mt Kilimanjaro grew out
of a conversation Miller had with a long-
time friend about mountain climbing and
quickly grew into Taking Epilepsy Aware-
ness to New Heights. Sponsors from around
the world pitched in and were offered
perks, including the opportunity for Miller
to carry a photo of their choosing to the
summit. Kilimanjaro, standing at more
than 19,000 feet above sea level, is the high-
est free standing mountain and the highest
of the continent of Africa. Miller has
scheduled his trek so that hell reach the
summit on Aug. 22, the anniversary of Car-
olinas passing. Miller hopes with bold and
frequent awareness efforts, the facts about
epilepsy will reach a more broad audience
and that someday, someone will not have to
suffer such a tragic loss at the hands of
epilepsy.

cause, go to

Let Me Run training
session Aug. 28
Have you seen us running
around town, maybe at the Pen-
nington Day 5k? We are Let Me
Run. Let Me Run is a non-profit
organization that meets twice a
week over the course of the seven-
week program for boys in grades
four and five. The mission is to in-
spire boys through the power of
running to be courageous enough
to be themselves, to build healthy
relationships and to live an active
lifestyle. The program culminates
with a 5K road race.
Let Me Run teams are quickly
expanding and can be found in
more than 60 schools in nine
states with close to 1,000 boys par-
ticipating. Hopewell became the
first site in the tri-state area to
host a team in the fall of 2012.
After successful fall 2012 and
spring 2013 seasons, which saw
close to 25 boys from Hopewell El-
ementary taking part, the coaches
would like to help build the pro-
gram and have arranged a train-
ing session in Hopewell Borough

start-up with a 90 percent
admit rate to top schools.
ThinkIvy is an exciting new con-
sulting company started by a group
of Princeton and Harvard under-
graduates less than six months ago.
It specializes in one thing: helping
high school students get admitted to
their top colleges.
There are several things about
ThinkIvy that make it different from the
typical college counseling company.
For one point, ThinkIvy does a lot
more. It guides applicants through
the entire application process. From
day one of freshman year, ThinkIvy
works with students to build a clear
plan on amassing the academic and
extracurricular credentials that will
distinguish them among top admis-
sion committees. This includes
informing students on grades and
test scores they need to earn, and
referring them to supplemental
tutoring if necessary. More signifi-
cantly, it means connecting students
with prestigious research intern-
ships, national math/science competi-
tions, and top summer programs
and nonprofit opportunities
that will burnish their
credentials.
Furthermore, ThinkIvy
is run entirely by Ivy
League students who
were admitted to at
least three Ivy
League or top
10 U.S. universi-
ties. The coun-
sel given at
ThinkIvy will
always be the
most competi-
tive, relevant, and up-to-date.
Counselors at other companies are
often 20-30 years removed from the
admission process.
ThinkIvys decentralized approach
of contracting Ivy
undergraduates
to handle a maximum of five stu-
dents at a time also means it devotes
substantially more time and energy
to its students. Whereas the typical
college consultant typically spends
no more than five hours editing an
application, ThinkIvy consultants
spend 100-plus hours on each stu-
dent.
A great example of the total com-
prehensiveness of ThinkIvys servic-
es can be seen in a ThinkIvy student
waitlisted by Duke University this
year.
Upon hearing of the students
waitlist status, founding partner
Mitchell Ng personally called the
student past midnight and devel-
oped a four-step action plan,
which included both personally
editing the students letter of
interest to Duke and tips for call-
ing the regional admissions offi-
cer. The plan worked, and the final
letter produced was so eloquently
cogent the student was admitted
from a waitlist of thousands three
days later.
Apart from superior services,
ThinkIvy offers lower costs and
accountability.
Unlike any college consulting com-
pany in the country, ThinkIvy offers a
100% money-back guarantee of
admission to the nations Ivy League
and elite universities for those stu-
dents purchasing its guaranteed
package. If a student is not admitted
to a list of eight top universities of
the students choosing, all services
rendered are free.
ThinkIvys placement record
allows it to make such a confident
and bold guarantee. All of ThinkIvys
students were admitted to one of

their top five choices, and 90% were
admitted to one of their top three
choices. 90% of ThinkIvys students
matriculated at an Ivy League or top
20 U.S. university.
For these impressive results,
ThinkIvy charges rates about a third
those charged by the average con-
sulting company. Costs vary for indi-
vidual cases, but the average student
in ThinkIvys program pays $3,500 for
a full package including resume build-
ing and application writing. The typi-

charges around $9,000 for consult-
ing that entails college application
editing and little else.
Ng, who was a freshman at
Princeton when he founded ThinkIvy,
and has since founded two other mul-
timillion companies in
internet social media
and medical prosthetics,
agrees.
The bottom line is
better services at lower
cost, says Ng, and the
marketplace does the
rest. That is why we
have grown so quickly
and will continue to
grow.
Ng concludes, More
than anything else, I
founded this company for the cus-
tomer, not for the company. This is
really the basis of the companies that
succeed the most.
