Tata Group

This is Indias largest group with businesses in seven sectors and operations in over 80 countries. The products and services by this group are available in over 85 countries. The group employs over 456,000 people. The group revenue has reached the 100 billion dollar mark where 58 percent of it comes from geographies other than India. The business sectors Tata operates in can be classified as follows: Chemicals Consumer products Materials Engineering Information Technology and Communications Services Energy

The group has around 100 operating companies in total where the largest companies are Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata power, Tata Communications, Tata chemicals, Tata Teleservices, Tata Global Beverages, Titan, Voltas, Tata AutoComp Systems, India Hotels. The group was founded by Jamsetji Tata with 1868 trading firm. He was a strong proponent of Indias industrialization and committed groups entry into steel, power and hotels and to creation of Indian Institute of Science. JRD Tata followed and led the group into new businesses including chemicals and fertilizers, civil aviation, locomotives and trucks, tea and coffee, computer software, financial services and watches. He was an eminent public personality and was decorated with Bharat Ratna which is nations highest civilian honor. Talking about the group revenue it can be seen that there has been a 15.4% CAGR from financial year 1994 to 2012 where the revenues have increased from 18,953 crores to 4,75,721 crores. Tata Sons is the promoter of the major operating Tata companies and holds significant shareholdings in these companies. About 66 percent of the equity capital of Tata Sons is held by philanthropic trusts endowed by members of the Tata family. The largest of these trusts are the Sir Dorabji Tata trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which were created by the families of the sons of Jamsetji Tata. The rest 44 percent of the ownership of Tata Sons is with some other corporate shareholders (18%), Tata companies (13%) and individuals (3%). The companies are committed to improving the quality of life of surrounding communities through programmes in health, education, vocational training and much more. Sustainability is built into the business processes which are backed by independent certification. The corporate sustainable budgets are costed in advance of the profit and loss account. There are a lot of programmes for active volunteering in the Groups. Tata has also gone beyond its main business line by setting up National Institutions like Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Tata Medical Center. The first was established in 1936 by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust as Indias first school of social work. It attained the university status in 1964 and was regarded as a centre of excellence for its education, research, field action and extensive work. It hosts 6 schools, 4

independent centers and 26 teaching programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma ad certificate levels focusing upon academic areas like sustainable, equitable and participatory development, human resource and health systems management, rural and urban habitat planning and governance and disaster management. The Tata Medical Center is the other National institution which is a comprehensive cancer care center inaugurated in 2011. It is located in Kolkata to cater to patients in east and north-east india. The hospital has a capacity of 170 beds where 50% of the beds are earmarked for free treatment for poorer sections. Internationalization where Tata has always thought and implemented on a global level has been one of the main growth drivers which has helped Tata make a good position worldwide which can be seen in a huge share of the revenue which comes from outside India. Along with this investment in Indias growing economy that too smartly and its impeccable execution at different levels has enabled Tata make a good mark in all the industries they have moved into. Both have been the key growth drivers for Tat due to which we see the Tata Group as a big success. Internationalization as big growth driver is supported by Tatas global rankings some of which are 1st in International voice-wholesale (Tata Communications), 2nd in Tea products (Tata Global Beverages), 2nd in Soda Ash (Tata Chemicals), 4th in Buses and Trucks (Tata Motors), 9th in Steel (Tata Steel) and 7th in It services (TCS). Investment in Indias growth economy can be seen in the products and services which are address the larger part of the pyramid. Some examples are Swach water purifier, Tata Nano, Intra-city light truck (Ace), Ginger Smart Basics hotels, Shubh Griha project, Low cost mobility, Titan Gold Plus, Tata salt, Tata BP Solar and Titan Sonanta watches. The Tata Group has donated a 220 crore ($50 million) to the prestigious Harvard Business School (HBS) to build an academic and a residential building on the institute's campus in Boston, Massachusetts. The new building will be called the Tata Hall and used for the institute's executive education programmes. The amount is the largest from an international donor in the business school's 102-year-old existence. The recent The Brand Trust Report, 2011 has ranked TATA as the second most trusted brands of India. In a 2011 investor poll conducted by equity research firm Equitymaster, TATA Group was voted as the most trustworthy among the Indian corporate houses. In the future Tata looks at some new technologies such as Nanotechnology and biotechnology, biofuels, alternatives to IC engines, wind power, solar power and supercomputing.

Corus
Corus Group was formed on 6th October 1999, through the merger of two companies, British Steel and Koninklijke Hoogovens, following the privatization of many steelworks companies by the U.K. government. British Steel Corporation was a large British steel producer, consisting of the assets of former private companies which had been nationalised on 28 July 1967 by the Labour Party government of Harold Wilson. On 5 December 1988 the company was privatised as a result of the British Steel Act 1988. Koninklijke Hoogovens was a Dutch steel producer founded in 1918, located in IJmuiden. Further, it was acquired by Tata in 2007 and Corus changed its name to Tata Steel Europe Limited and adopted the Tata corporate identity in September 2010.The Company consists of four divisions which include: Strip Products, Long Products, Aluminum and Distribution and Building Systems. With headquarters in London, it operates as an international company, satisfying the demand of many steel customers

worldwide. Its core business comprises of manufacturing, development and allocation of steel and aluminum products and services. The company has a wide variety of products and services which comprise of the manufacturing of electrical steel, narrow strip, plates, packaging steel, plated steel strip, semi-finished steel, tube products, wire rod and rail products and services. However, the company is also engaged in providing a variety of services including design, technology and consultancy services. Tata Steel Europe operates two major integrated steel plants in the United Kingdom, at Port Talbot, south Wales, and Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, and one in IJmuiden, the Netherlands. Corus products and services are acquired by customers from diverse fields such as commercial and military aerospace ventures, the automotive, construction, engineering, defense and security, as well as the rail and shipbuilding industry.
