Data in an ODS can be overwritten while data in an infocube cannot.

If your volume of data is large, you can have the summarized data in the Infocube and when you require to view the detail, you can fetch the details required from the ODS. In the Infocube one can create aggregates on the data resulting in quicker retrieval of data in queries. Regarding loading data to an infocube via ODS it depends on the requirement. It is possible to load data directly into an Infocube but when you require to trace your data to a specific document it is advisable to store it in the ODS. The change log table of the ODS contains both the before and after image of the record. ravikanth.gadicherla Replied Mar 15, 2004 Hi, The main difference between the ODS Object and the PSA and InfoCube is that the ODS Object allows existing data to be changed. Whereas an InfoCube principally allows inserts, and only allows deletion on the basis of requests, data in an ODS Object can be changed during the staging process. This enables an ODS Object to be used as a consolidation Object in a Data Warehouse. PSA data change is only supported by manual change or by customer programs and not by the staging mechanism. Unlike ODS Objects; InfoCubes have a mandatory time-dimension that allows you to look at particular relationships in relation to time-periods. For example, you can look at how relationships have changed over a certain time-period. An ODS Object is principally used for analyzing the status of data at a certain point in time. This allows you to see what relationships are currently like. Exceptionally you can also track history in ODS Objects by adding a date to the key fields of the ODS Object.

It is generally true to say that it is not always necessary to implement ODS Objects in every scenario. Rather, it depends on the requirements of each scenario. You should only use ODS if the requirements of your scenario fit one of the three usage possibilities outlined above (Inbound ODS, Consistent ODS, Application-related ODS). An ODS Object placed in the data flow to an InfoCube without having a function does nothing except hinder loading performance. If you need more information regarding ODS Vs Infocube you can search SAP marketplace or http://service.sap.com regards, RK 0 sravani bhanu Replied 8 days ago ods has flat structure and infocube has multidimension 0 Joe Fernandes Replied 8 days ago Data in an ODS can be overwritten while data in an infocube cannot. Hi, We are having BW 2.1 in our organization. We have created info objects, info source with PC Data source and ODS. ODS is created and activated with update rules. While activating ODS, system asked for username and password. and while trying to upload data into ODS with PC data as the source system we are facing a typical problem. The job which was scheduled as START IMMEDIATELY gets scheduled after some time and will be in WAIT state. After the wait period is over the request shows error " Processing is overdue" what could be the reason ? I am not geting why login screen was required while activating ODS. =09 Please help us why the above errors are occurring and if anybody can suggest us how to set up ODS and load data, it would be of great help. activate within your ODS (because the ODS is not set to update automatically. You can verify this by displaying the content of the "New Data" table on the Contents tab under Manage ODS... If this is the case, you can rectify the situation by right-clicking on your ODS and selecting "Activate Data in ODS..." and then select "Start" in the following dialog. When i try to see the contect of the psa table, no records are shown. In addition to this, the request that load data from ods to the infocube tell me that zero record was selected. Could some one help me? Thanks in advance. cecilia 0 Sylvia Reynolds Replied Sep 4, 2002 JUST IN CASE YOU DID NOT SET THIS, TRY THIS: 1. GO TO SETTING ON YOUR SCREEN 2. CLICK ON SETTINGS 3. DISPLAY SELECTION OF PSA TREE 4. CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE IT SET TO A DATE RANGE OR SOMETHING ELSE 5. RECOMMEND: DISPLAY ALL REQUESTS. More White Papers 0 frontrng Replied Sep 4, 2002 Sounds like transfer rules or InfoSource not properly activated. If data is not making it to the PSA, clearly no data avail. to load to any subsequent data target. I assume you get green light from load monitor. I also assume other packages load successfully (rules out problems with RFC). Try troubleshooting as follows: Use extract checker on R/3 to verify your source records are being extracted. Dbl check that InfoSource and transfer rules are properly activated. If all else looks fine, try deleting and recreating load package. If you change an InfoSource/Transfer Rules, under certain circumstances the load package needs to be recreated. Good luck, Dianne Harmon Post your Response Show formatting options
