manuscritos; las bibliotecas más grandes alcanzaban la cantidad de 600
libros y el número total de libros en Europa era en 1450 inferior a
100.000. Para 1500, cuando la impresión llevaba cuarenta y cinco años,
el total de libros superaba los 9 millones.

Los libros en forma de rollo de papiro o pergamino fueron más tarde reemplazados por
el codex, un libro conformado de páginas y una espina, similar a los libros utilizados
hoy en día. El codex o códice fue inventado durante los primeros siglos de nuestra era.
Previamente a la invención y adopción de la prensa de impresión, todos los libros eran
copiados manualmente, lo que hacía que fuesen caros y escasos.
Los libros eran copiados e iluminados por monjes en el scriptorium (sala de escritura)
de un monasterio. Las lámparas y las velas estaban prohibidas para evitar los incendios,
y los monjes no podían hablar para no cometer errores. Toda comunicación se mantenía
mediante signos.
Durante la edad media, cuando sólo las iglesias, universidades y hombres pertenecientes
a la nobleza podían adquirir libros, estos eran a menudo puestos bajo llave para evitar su
hurto. Estos primeros libros fueron hechos con páginas de pergamino y vitela, pero
desde el siglo X estos materiales fueron paulatinamente reemplazados por papel, ideado
por los chinos, aunque fueron los árabes quienes transmitieron el proceso de elaboración
del lejano oriente a Europa.

The Library of Congress occupies three buildings on Capitol Hill. The Thomas Jefferson Building
(1897) is the original separate Library of Congress building. (The Library began in 1800 inside
the U.S. Capitol.) The John Adams Building was built in 1938 and the James Madison Memorial
Building was completed in 1981.

Today's Library of Congress is an unparalleled world resource. The collection of nearly 142 million
items includes more than 32 million cataloged books and other print materials in 470 languages;
more than 62 million manuscripts; the largest rare book collection in North America; and the
world's largest collection of legal materials, films, maps, sheet music and sound recordings.

Un decreto del año 1537, que sigue aún en vigor, exige que la Biblioteca Nacional de
Francia guarde un ejemplar de todas las obras publicadas en Francia. Actualmente,
alberga en total más de 13 millones de libros y 350.000 volúmenes encuadernados de
manuscritos, además de colecciones de mapas, monedas, documentos, estampas y
registros sonoros.
