SCHOOL AS A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Your Way: A general observation of the campus and the classroom is an exciting way to start your observation.

Your mission is to do the following tasks: 1. Visit a school. Look into facilities and support learning areas in the campus, then in the classroom. 2. Accomplish the checklist as you move around the school premises. 3. Based on your gathered data in the checklist, describe the school environment. 4. Make a reflection on the characteristics of a school environment that promotes learning. 5. Present your idea of a good school environment through any of these: a.) Descriptive Paragraph; b.) Photo Essay c.) Sketch or Drawing d.) Poem, Song or Rap

Your Tools: As you move around the campus, activity forms are provided for you to document your observations. It is advised that you read the entire worksheet before proceeding to the school site. A good understanding of the activities and tasks to be accomplished in the activity sheets will yield better learning results.

An Observation Guide for the CLASSROOM VISIT

Bagumbayan Central School is a big school located in Baranggay 8, Washington Drive, Legazpi City. It has a population of One Thousand Three Hundred Ten pupils. It is an Elementary school situated along the road, near Albay Astrodome and Legazpi City airport. The school campus is big, clean, orderly, and with all the facilities needed. It has several newly painted and properly decorated classrooms and buildings. Some classrooms are newly repaired while there are also some that needs repair, especially ceiling and roofings. Most of the classrooms are in good conditions. They have uniformed colors of paints, dirty white and green.

An Observation Guide for the CLASSROOM VISIT


Be guided by these tasks as you do your observation. Then accomplish the matrix to record your data. 1. Look at the walls of the classroom. What are the posted on the walls? What heroes, religious figures, lessons, visual aids, announcements, do you see poster? 2. Examine how the furniture are arranged. Where is the teachers table located? How are the tables and chairs/desks are arranged? 3. What learning materials / equipment are present? 4. Observe the students. How many are occupying one room? 5. Is the room well-lighted and well-ventilated?

There are bulletin boards inside the classroom that displays pictures and captions of the unit lessons in every subject, BEIS (Basic Education Information System) shows important information about HPTA/CLASS organizations, Contributors Roll, Class Standing, Mission & Vision of BCS, Norms to follow. etc There are 2 Teachers Table, infront and at the back part of the classroom. The learners desks are in good condition but there are some that needs to be repaired. They are properly arranged. There are 2 big blackboards located infront. They are newly painted with visible writing lines. Both are in good condition. There are learning materials/ visual aids displayed inside the classroom. There is also a Television used for viewing Knowledge channel, a computer, and outputs of pupils during activities are properly displayed. They have an ideal number of pupils, just suited for the size of the classroom. The classroom is clean and properly ventilated, it has ceiling & stand fans , and windows that keeps the room warm.

Name of School Observed: BAGUMBAYAN CENTRAL SCHOOL Location of the School: WASHINGTON DRIVE , LEGAZPI CITY Date of Visit: July 29, 2013

During my visit in Bagumbayan Central School last July 29, 2013, the Principal gave me a warm welcome. She allowed me to conduct my school and classroom observation and interviewed some of the teachers with regards to their teaching experiences. The school campus is a public central school with a population of 1310 pupils. It is clean and spacious, with a vacant lot at the back part and it is used as playground of the pupils. The classrooms are newly painted and some are newly repaired. There are other rooms and facilities like the Library/LRC/Guidance Room, School Clinic, Speech Laboratory, ICT/ Computer room, Knowledge Channel Exhibit Room Sports and Arts Room, Home Economics Room, Hand washing Area, Social Hall , Property Custodian Room, Comfort Rooms for boys and girls, School Canteens, And other facilities, They are all functional and beneficial to the pupils. I conducted my classroom visitation and lesson observation in Grade VI OPC (Opportunity Class. Inside the classroom, there are bulletin boards with pictures and captions showing the Unit Lessons, display of sayings and proverbs, basic information, etc.. The pictures and other bulletin board displays are colorful, showing artistic designs. With regards to the number of pupils, there are 45, just enough to the size of the classroom with more space for other equipments such as instructional materials, teachers tables, cabinets, etc.. The room is a quite dark and hot, but there are lights and wall / ceiling fans in every corner to make the room bright and warm. I also had the opportunity to observe the pupils and the teacher during their lesson in Science and Health. The teacher presented her lesson very well. The pupils were so interested and actively participated during the experiments and doing the other activities. I had a very meaningful and enjoyable experience in this observation. Its nice to see how the teacher tried her best to make her pupils learn and the enthusiasm of the children to participate in the lesson.

How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact on the learning of the students going to the school? What are your conclusions? THE KIND OF SCHOOL CAMPUS AND CLASSROOM PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING SITUATION AND DEVELOPMENT. PROVIDING AN IDEAL SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT THAT IS CONDUCIVE TO THE LEARNERS WILL GIVE POSITIVE RESULT AND ENTHUSIASM TO LEARN. How does this relate to your knowledge of child adolescent development / how does this relate to your knowledge of facilitating learning? TO FACILITATE LEARNING, A TEACHER MUST CONSIDER THE NATURE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHILD. HE/SHE MUST HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO GET THE INTEREST AND ENTHUSIASM OF THE CHILD TO LEARN AND BECOME MORE ACTIVE OR PARTICIPATIVE IN ANY GIVEN ACTIVITIES. Your Reflection: 1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why? Why Not? YES, BECAUSE THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT IS CONDUSIVE FOR LEARNIBG. THEY HAVE A CLEAN SURROUNDINGS AND FACILITIES TO ELICIT AND IMPROVE LEARNING. 2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning? A SCHOOL CAMPUS THAT MOTIVATES THE LEARNERS TO LOVE LEARNING AND DEVELOP THEIR TALENTS, SKILLS, AND POTENTIALS. THE SCHOOL SHOULD BE CHILD FRIENDLY AND HAVE AN IDEAL ENVIRONMENT CONDUSIVE FOR LEARNING. 3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning? A CLASSROOM THAT IS ALWAYS CLEAN, WELL VENTILATED, PROPERLY ARRANGED, WELL MANAGED, AND HAS A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE IS CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING. 4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3? TO MAINTAIN A CLASSROOM THAT IS CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TASKS OF A TEACHER. PERSONALLY, I THINK I COULD ACCOMPLISH IT BY GIVING AND EXERTING MORE EFFORT, TIME, AND MONEY TO MAINTAIN A WELL ORGANIZED AND PROPERLY VENTILATED CLASSROOM.
