The element that draws the most intrigue is Andrew Dufresnes Journey, Andy himself is a complex character which causes audience to stick around just to try and make sense of him but when his story of injustice is tacked on viewers become addicted. Andy is accused of murdering his wife and lover; he claims to be innocent but his cool calm collective manor tips the audience off. Most innocent men in his situation would not be so composed and disconnected which caused the jury to question him; although there is little physical evidence and Andy pleads not guilty the jury sentenced him to life at Shawshank penitentiary, as an initial characterization the audience assumes Andy is guilty. Upon entering Shawshank Andy is viewed as weak by his peers, I must admit I didnt think much of Andy first time I laid eyes on him; looked like a stiff breeze could knock him over. That was my first impression of the man. Some inmates even go to the trouble on betting that Andy will break the first night. Andy doesnt talk much to begin with he tries to pass the time but its hard with nothing to do, Andy soon approaches Red the it guy in shawshank; you want it Red can get it, Andy orders a rock hammer to pass the time carving rocks. This interaction soon led to a friendship between Red and Andy, Andy also becomes a keystone at Shawshank dealing with the wardens finances (laundering money for Horton), the jailhouse library and doing the guards taxes, He even begins to mentor a young inmate new to shawshank Tommy, the kid is troubled he has been in jails all over the country since he was a teenager. Andy begins to turn Tommys life around helping him get a GED and one day Tommy reveals he knows the truth of Andys wifes murder; his old cellmate told him he murdered Mrs. Dufresne. When Andy approaches the warden asking for help, Norton refused him claiming Tommy is lying and Andy reaction is explosive its my life, dont you understand? ITS MY LIFE this results in Andy getting 2 months in the hole and the warden assassinating Tommy. The warden shows no compassion for the value of Andys life or freedom, Horton would prefer Andy died in shawshank and his crimes never saw the light of day. This is the final straw, Andy was done with shawshank and helping Horton, it was time for his escape. Andy shines up a pair of the wardens shoes and took one the wardens fine suits, he walks to his cell for lights out and he is never seen in shawshank again. Andy Dufresne chipped away at his prison for 17 years to get freedom after crawling through the wall of his ceiling, he cracked the sewage pipe and crawled through it. Andy Dufresne- who crawled through a river of shit and came out clean on the other side Andy soon collected Hortons laundered money and shared his story with the newspapers, boys at shawshank will get the justice they deserved. Andy carries out the rest of his days in a place without a memory.
