Meduim Carbon Steels are similar to low carbon steel except that the carbon ranges from 0.30 to 0.60% & the manganese from 0.50 to 1.65%. Increasing the carbon content is approximately 0.5% with an accompanying increase in manganese allows medium carbon steels to be used in the quenched & tempered conditions. This steels are of particular importance because of unique combination of strength & toughness after heat treat treatment.
The following are the specifications covered by us in this range of steel: Grade C-40 Grade C-55 Grade C-65
Grade C-40
Grade C-40 Chemistry:
0.35 to 0.45 0.10 to 0.35 0.60 to 0.90 0.05 max 0.05 max
Physical Properties: Hardness: 170HV max Yield Strees: 270N/mm2 min Tensile Strength: 590N/mm2 max Elongation %: 30 min
Range: Thickness: 0.10 mm to 4.00 mm Width: 8 mm to 500 mm Hardness: Fully annealed or rolling hard as per customer requirement.
Features: Due to low carbon content, this grade of steel offers better forming & bending quality. It is used for applications, where critical bending operation are required. Due to carbon range of 0.4% and manganese 0.9%, it
can also be quenched & tempered and thus it is very suitable for components where, critical bending has to be achieved & high tensil and toughness can be obtained by means of quenching & tempering.
Application:- accessories for guns & cannous, pen clips, hair clips, high tensil steel strapping etc.
Grade C-55
Grade C-55 Chemistry:
0.50 to 0.60 0.10 to 0.35 0.50 to 0.65 0.05 max 0.05 max
Physical Properties: Hardness: 180HV max Yield Strees: 270N/mm2 min Tensile Strength: 590N/mm2 max Elongation %: 30 min
Range: Thickness: 0.10 mm to 4.00 mm Width: 8 mm to 500 mm Hardness: Fully annealed or rolling hard as per customer requirement.
Features: Due to slightly higher carbon, higher hardness can be achieved resulting in higher tensile strength and better toughness in fully annealed condition, this material is also very suitable for component where critical bending or forming is required before heat treatment.
Application:- accessories for guns & cannous, pen clips, hair clips, high tensil steel strapping etc.
Grade C-65
Grade C-65 Chemistry:
Carbon % -
0.60 to 0.70
Physical Properties: Hardness: 200 HV max Yield Strees: 270N/mm2 min Tensile Strength: 590N/mm2 max Elongation %: 30 min
Range: Thickness: 0.10 mm to 4.00 mm Width: 8 mm to 500 mm Hardness: Fully annealed or rolling hard as per customer requirement.
Note: The following factors should be kept in mind in selecting a specific grade:-
1.
The grade has a marked influence on hardenability - the property which determines the hardness pattern throughout a piece of steel hardened in a stated manner.
2.
The best properties can be obtained in a steel that has been fully hardened before tempering. incomplete hardening has a harmful effect on some of the properties specially yield strength & toughness.
In selection of a steel for a particular component, the most important question is whether the mechanical properties required can be obtained after suitable heat treatment, in the size and shape at the part in question.
