From the Pastors Desk The Beginning of School

It is difficult to believe that in a couple of weeks school will be back in session. It seems like the summer is getting shorter and shorter and that time goes by faster and faster. Some kids are glad that school is starting back upfor they enjoy school (and more likely, enjoying being with their friends all day). Others dread the fact that school is starting backthey cant stand school and do not look forward to school starting anew. As I think about the beginning of school, it got me thinking about learning. Ask yourself these questions:

When was the last time that you learned something new? Do seek to learn new things every year? Do you enjoy learning?

At times, it seems like there is a perception that when you graduate from school you are done learningthat this is the end of the formal learning process. However; nothing could be further from the truth. In some ways, going to school as a youth should prepare us for a process of life-long learning. The reality is that in our world today, you need to be constantly learningwhether it is for your job, or using new technology, trying a new hobby, or working at getting better at a hobby. In addition to some practical applications for needing to learn something new, research also shows that by keeping your brain engage with learning may help to delay the onset of Alzheimer. Actively engaging your brain is good for you and has many benefits. You may be wondering, why am I reflecting upon learning? I see a direct correlation with some peoples perception that learning ends when you graduate from school with the notion that learning in the church ends when you are confirmed. We place a high emphasis upon Sunday School for kids and Confirmation during the Middle School years, but then what happens? What about Adult Sunday School? What about other learning opportunities within the church? How are you continuing to learn in grow within the church and with respect to your faith? Do you listen and learn during sermons, or is it a time to allow the mind to wander for a while and think about what you need to do the rest of the day? How are you engaging with the Bible as a way to continue to grow and learn? Beginning in September, I will be using a new lectionary (I wrote about this last month). This new lectionary seeks to tell the overall narrative of the Biblea way to seek to see the whole story together and understand the Bible as a continuous narrative and a united story of Gods actions within the world. A way to learn more about the Bible. Keep learning!

Upcoming Worship
August 4th:
TextLuke 12:13-21
A man asked Jesus to be an arbiter between him and his brother about their inheritance. Jesus warns them about greed and then tells a parable. The parable tells the story of a farmer who tears down his barn to store more and more. Jesus warns them to not worry about storing up treasure, but concentrate on being rich toward God.
Below are the lessons and some thoughts about the upcoming Sundays. Please take some time to look over the lesson and reflect upon the questions in preparation of the upcoming weeks in worship.

August 11 th:
TextLuke 12:32-40
Jesus tells his followers that where their treasure is, that is where their heart will be also. He is telling them to trust in God and not their possessions. The text goes on to encourage people to be ready at all time to serve God.

August 18th:
TextLuke 12:49-56
In this text, we have Jesus uttering harsh words. He proclaims that he did not come to bring peace, but division! Families will be divided against each other. What is Jesus talking about? Will we be able to interpret the signs of this age?

August 25th:
TextLuke 13:10-17
Jesus angers religious leaders by healing on the Sabbath. He heals a woman who had been crippled for 18 years. The leaders were upset, not because of the healing, but because Jesus did this on the Sabbath. How did Jesus understanding of the Sabbath differ from the religious leaders? How were the rules or laws preventing the religious leaders from seeing Gods marvelous power?

The August Stephen Minister group meeting will take place from 6:30 to 9:00 on Monday, August 26th . Are you interested in learning what Stephen Ministry is all about? There will be an informational meeting at 9:00 on Sunday, August 18th . FRIENDLY CARE:
Surprise visitors and welcome faces at the Borchers Breakfast Clubs Fourth of July festivities were Rev. Quentin and Pat Small, who formerly attended St. Paul on a regular basis. Following is a few excerpts from a recent letter sent by Quentin and Pat : The Smalls have not dropped off the face of the earth. Here is an update. We moved to Franklin and live in a condo just west of I-65. Keeping the property and house in Brown County were getting a little too much to handle..The church I served in Zionsville reduced their staff to one pastor so I volunteered to help them out until August/September..We miss all of you and appreciate very much the time we spent with all at the church. Greetings to our friends. Quentin and Pat

HEALTH & WELLNESS CARE:

Recycling efforts are off to a great start! Our recycling bin has seen a lot of activity from members and neighbors. We arranged for our first pick up a mere three weeks after the bin was placed! So far, working with Rumpke has been a breeze, and folks using the bin have been responsible and courteous. No complaints have been received! Thank you for being responsible and making the effort to do your part to care for the earth God has given us!
