VSL CHAMPIONSHIP
The VSL Mariners defeated the VSL Cubs 11-8 in 12 innings yesterday to win the 2013 VSL
Championship 2-0. It was the VSL Mariners first VSL Championship, after finishing losing in the
Championship game in 2012, 2010, 2008 and 2005.
Offensive Leaders
INF/OF Yordi Calderon hit .343 (82x239) with 68 runs scored, 20 doubles, 3 triples, 11 home runs
and 42 RBI in 68 games. He led VSL in on-base percentage (.448), slugging percentage (.590),
runs scored, (68) and extra-base hits (34), while also ranking T1st in games (68), 2nd in hits,
doubles, home runs and average and T4th in RBI. Teammate INF/OF Gianfranco Wawoe hit .328
(80x244) with 63 runs scored, 19 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs, 30 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 68
games with the VSL Mariners. Wawoe ranked amongst the league leaders in nearly every offensive
category, including T1st in games played, 2nd in on-base percentage (.415) and runs scored, 3rd in
hits and stolen bases, 4th in doubles and at-bats, T4th in extra-base hits (29) and 5th in average.
Starters Kevin Gadea and Pablo Lopez have combined to go 16-2 with a 2.61 ERA (40 ER, 138.0
IP) in 26 starts. Gadea went 9-1 with a 2.65 ERA (21 ER, 71.1 IP) in 14 starts. He finished tied for
the VSL league lead in wins and starters, while finishing 2nd in innings pitched and 5th in ERA.
Lopez finished 2nd in the league in WHIP (0.93) and opponent average (.209) and 4th in ERA
(2.57) and wins (7). Overall he went 7-1 with a 2.57 ERA (19 ER, 66.2 IP) in 12 starts. RH Hector
Hidalgo led the team with 7 saves, while RH Jonathan Jimenez and RH Osmel Morales each
recorded 5 saves. Despite being used primarily as a reliever, Morales finished 2nd in the VSL in
strikeouts, striking out 66 batters in 53.1 innings
OFF DAY
REHAB ASSIGNMENT: OF Franklin Gutierrez was returned from his third rehabilitation
assignment (July 19-Aug. 5) with Tacoma, but remains on the 15-day disabled list. Overall he is
batting .219 (34x155) with 22 runs scored, 10 doubles, 3 home runs, 22 RBI, 10 walks and 2 stolen
bases in 37 games with AAA Tacoma. Gutierrez was placed on the 15-day DL on June 25 with a
strained right hamstring. He appeared in 2 games (June 22-23) after being activated from the
disabled list on June 22. Gutierrez was on the disabled list from April 23-June 21 with the same
injury (right hamstring strain). Gutierrez was batting .267 (15x60) with 8 runs scored, 4 doubles, 5
home runs (3 leadoff HR) and 11 RBI in 18 games (15 GS in CF) this season for Seattle. This is the
6th trip to the DL for Gutierrez since the start of the 2011 season.
OF NOTE: INF Ty Kelly went 0-for-5 snappning his hitting streak at 8 games. During the streak he
hit .438 (14x32) with 5 RBI, 5 walks and 2 stolen bases. He has also hit safely in 21 of 29 games
(w/AB) with 10 multi-hit games since being acquired, while reaching base safely via a hit or walk in
27 games. Since July 2, he is batting .327 (36x110) with 18 runs scored, 5 doubles, 2 home runs,
11 RBI, 23 walks and 2 stolen bases in 29 game. INF/OF Nate Tenbrink has hit safely in 11 of his
last 13 games, batting .370 (17x46) with 11 runs scored, 3 doubles, 5 home runs, 10 RBI, 9 walks
and 1 stolen base. RHP Taijuan Walker tossed 14.0 scoreless innings over his first 3 AAA starts,
before allowing a solo home run in the 5th inning on July 7 at Salt Lake. Overall he is 2-1 with a
3.09 ERA (11 ER, 32.0 IP) in 6 starts with Tacoma. He has limited opponents to a .234 (29x121)
average, while walking 12 and striking out 33. Walker is currently the youngest player in the PCL
this season and 2nd-youngest in Triple-A. He made his Triple-A debut vs. Fresno on June 25 at
Cheney Stadium (W, 6.0,3,0,0,2,4). Walker is the youngest Rainiers pitcher to make his Triple-A
debut since a 19-year-old Felix Hernandez on April 8, 2005 at Fresno.

RECAP: The Generals scored a run in the 8th in 9th inning to come-from-behind to tie the game and send it to extra innings, but allowed a
run in the bottom of the 10th inning with 2 outs as Jackson lost to Mississippi 5-6 on Wednesday night. DH Julio Morban (2x5, 2B, 2 RBI)
recorded the teams only multi-hit game, while driving in 2 of the Generals 5 runs. SS Chris Taylor (1x3, 2 R, 2 BB), 3B Ramon Morla
(1x3, R, 3B, RBI, BB) and RF Jabari Blash (1x4) each recorded 1 of the teams 5 hits. Starter Trevor Miller (7.0,10,5,5,1,0,2HR) allowed
5 runs on 10 hits in 7.0 innings, but didnt figure into the decision. RH Forrest Snow (1.0,0,0,0,0,0) and RH Stephen Kohlscheen
(1.0,0,0,0,0,1) combined to retire 6 straight batters over the 8th and 9th innings, before RH Dominic Leone allowed a run in the bottom of
the 10th inning to record his first AA loss.
OF NOTE: OF Julio Morban has hit safely in 8 of his last 9 games, batting .364 (12x33) with 11 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home
run, 6 RBI, 4 walks and 2 stolen base. OF Jabari Blash has hit safeiy in all 3 games since being promoted from High Desert to Jackson,
batting .250 (3x12) with 1 run scored, 1 double, 1 home run and 2 RBI. INF Ji-Man Choi is batting .333 (16x48) with 5 runs scored, 8 extrabase hits (4-2B, 2-3B, 2-HR), 14 RBI and 10 walks in last 14 games. C John Hicks has hit safely in 9 of his last 11 games, batting .308
(12x39) with 6 runs scored, 1 double, 1 home run, 7 RBI, 8 walks and 2 stolen base. After allowing 5 runs over his first 6 appearances of
the season, RH Carson Smith has allowed only 5 earned runs over his last 31 relief appearances. During this stretch he is 0-1 with 7
saves and a 1.30 ERA (5 ER, 34.2 IP). Since April 22, Smith has lowered his ERA from 8.44 to 2.25. Smith has struck out at least 1 batter
in 32 of 37 games (54 strikeouts). LH Kyle Hunter has held oppoents scoreless in 23 of 28 relief appearances this season. Overall he is 10 with 1 save and a 1.27 ERA (6 ER, 41.2 IP). He has limited opponents to a .218 (34x156), while walking 10 and striking out 31. RH Tyler
Burgoon has allowed only 2 runs over his last 26.2 innings in relief in last 18 relief appearances (0.68 ERA). During this stretch he has
limited opponents to a .143 average (12x84), while walking 12 and striking out 31. He has recorded at least 1 strikeout out in 27 of 31
appearances with Jackson (60 strikeouts overall), including 8 outings with at least 3 strikeouts. LHP Nick Hill has not allowed a run in his
last 8.1 innings in relief (9 G). LHP Anthony Fernandez is 3-2 with a 2.17 ERA (9 ER, 37.1 IP) over his last 6 starts. RH Dominic Leone
allowed a run in the bottom of the 10th inning on Aug. 7 at Mississippi, snapping a string of 7.1 scoreless innings since being promoted to
Jackson from High Desert. It also snapped a string of 17.2 scoreless innings, dating back to June 16 with High Desert.
CHOI NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: INF Ji-Man Choi was named Southern League Player of the Week, July 29-Aug. 4. Choi hit .353
(7x20) with 3 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 10 RBI and 8 walks during the week. He ranked 2nd in the Southern League
during the week with 10 RBI, including 3 consecutive mulit-RBI games from July 29-31. Choi lifted a 0-2 fastball over the fence in right for
his 2nd grand slam this season on July 31 vs. Huntsville. It was part of a 4-run 7th and it helped propel Jackson to the 7-3 victory.

RECAP: The Mavericks scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to tie the game 4-4, but their rally fell short after scoring only 1 run in
the bottom of the 10th inning as High Desert lost to Inland Empire 5-6 on Wednesday night. All 9 players in the Mavericks starting lineup
recorded at least 1 hit, while CF Jamal Austin (3x6), RF Kevin Rivers (2x5, 3B, RBI, BB) and 3B Patrick Kivlehan (2x4, R, 2B, 2 BB)
each recorded 2 of the teams 13 hits. Starter Stephen Landazuri (6.0,7,2,2,1,3,HR) allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 6.0 innings, but didnt
figure into the decision. Relievers RH Andrew Kittredge (1.2,3,2,2,0,4,2HR), LH Bobby Shore (0.1,0,0,0,0,0) and RH Mayckol Guaipe
(2.0,2,2,2,1,4) combined to allow 5 runs over the final 4.0 innings. Guiape allowed 2 runs in the top of the 10th inning to record his 3rd loss.
OF NOTE: INF Patrick Kivlehan has hit safely in the last 12 games, batting .413 (19x46) with 11 runs scored, 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 6
RBI, 6 walks and 3 stolen bases. INF OF Jamal Austin currently has a 10-game hit streak batting .476 (20x42) with 10 runs scored, 1
double, 1 triple, 5 RBI, 4 walks and 5 stolen bases. He has hit safely in 25 of his last 29 games, batting .388 (45x116) with 26 runs scored,
5 doubles, 5 triples, 21 RBI, 11 walks and 10 stolen bases. During this 29 game stretch since July 4, Austin ranks 2nd in the California
League in average. OF Kevin Rivers has hit safely in his last 11 games, batting .413 (19x46) with 5 runs scored, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 3
home runs, 12 RBI and 3 walks. Since July 14, Rivers is batting .380 (30x79) with 10 runs scored, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 16 RBI
and 7 walks in 20 games. OF Nate Melendres has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, batting .351 (20x57) with 6 runs scored, 4 doubles,
1 triple, 2 home runs, 12 RBI, 1 walk and 1 stole base. RH David Colvin has allowed only 6 earned runs over his last 33.1 innings in relief
(1.62 ERA). He has struck out at least 1 batter in 29 of 31 appearances this season (62), including 17 straight games with a strikeout (35).

RECAP: The LumberKings scored 5 runs in the top of the 7th inning as Clinton hung on for a 7-5 win over Quad Cities on Wednesday
night. 3B D.J. Peterson (3x5, R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) hit a grand slam home run with 2 otus in the bottom of the 7th. It was his 11th home run in
42 games this season combined between 42 games with Everett (6) and Clinton (5). It also marked his 3rd grand slam this season, his first
with Clinton. 2B Ketel Marte (2x5, R) recorded his 9th consecutive multi-hit game, while 1B Taylor Ard (2x5, RBI) and SS Martin Peguero
(2x4, R, RBI) had 2 of the teams 13 hits. Stater Victor Sanchez (6.2,7,3,3,1,4) recorded his 4th win of the season, allowing 3 runs on 7
hits in 6.2 innings. RH Blake Holovach (1.1,3,2,2,0,0) allowed 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, while RH Richard Vargas
(1.0,0,0,0,0,0) tossed a 1-2-3 9th inning to earn his1st save.
OF NOTE: In 7 games in August the LumberKings are 5-2, batting .351 (92x262) with 55 runs scored, 13 doubles, 5 triples, 6 home runs,
52 RBI, 23 walks and 6 stolen base. Clinton currently leads the Midwest League in average, batting .268 (1013x3777) with 519 runs
scored, 210 doubles, 24 triples, 58 home runs and 465 RBI in 114 games. INF Ketel Marte currently has a career-high 15-game hit streak,
including recording 9 consecutive multi-hit games. During this 15-game stretch he is batting .515 (34x66) with 11 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2
triples, 9 RBI, 5 walks and 4 stolen bases. Since July 30, Marte has recorded 9 consecutive multi-hit games (4-H: 2, 3-H: 4, 2-H: 3), batting
.634 (26x41) with 9 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 7 RBI, 4 walks and 3 stolen bases. During this stretch he leads all Minor League
players in average, hits and a .667 on-base percentage (min. 5 G). C Tyler Marlette has hit safely in his last 10 games with 6 multi-hit
contests, batting .415 (17x41) with 5 runs scored, 4 doubles, 3 RBI, 4 walks and 2 stolen bases. Tim Lopes has hit safely in 8 of his last 11
games, batting .318 (14x44) with 6 runs scored, 6 doubles, 1 home run, 8 RBI, 3 walks and 2 stolen bases. He also hit .338 (27x80) with 8
runs scored, 5 doubles, 11 RBI, 4 walks and 4 stolen base in 22 games in July. LH Tyler Pike is 6-1 with a 2.39 ERA (18 ER, 78.1 IP) in
his last 14 starts. LH Scott DeCecco is 4-1 with a 2.75 ERA (12 ER, 39.1 IP) in last 6 starts. Overall this season he is 9-7 with a 4.05 ERA

MARTE NAMED MIDWEST LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: INF Ketel Marte was name Midwest League Player of the Week, July 29Aug. 4. Marte hit safely in all 6 game he appeared during the week, including 6 consecutive multi-hit games, batting .667 (18x27) with 6
runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 4 RBI, 4 walk and 3 stolen bases. During this 7-game stretch led all Minor League players with 18 hits,
while T1st with a .667 average (Jake Bauers-AZL Padres, .667/12x18).

ALL-STAR BREAK
NORTHWEST LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME RECAP: The South Division rallied for 3 runs in the top of the 9th to take an 8-7 victory with
Hunter Renfroe, a first-round pick by the San Diego Padres, singling in the winning run with two outs in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,818
on Tuesday night. SS Jack Reinheimer (2x5, R), C Carlton Tanabe (0x1, K), DH Justin Seager (1x3, R, 2 K), 3B Bryan Brito (0x2, 2 K)
each recorded at least 1 at-bat, while starter RH Lars Huijer (1.0,1,0,0,1,0), RH Aaron Brooks (0.1,0,0,0,0,0) and RH Jose Valdivia
(1.0,3,3,1,0,0,2WP,HB) each made an appearance on the mound. Valdivia recorded the loss allowing 3 runs (1 ER) on 3 hits in the 9th
inning.
NORTHWEST LEAGUE HR DERBY: Sean Dwyer of the Tri-City Dust Devils won the 2013 NWL Home Run Derby, presented by Safeco
Insurance. The lefty outfielder hit three homers in the first round and clubbed two in the second to win the event, which was part of All-Star
festivities at Everett Memorial Stadium Tuesday. Phillips Castillo of the host Everett AquaSox came in second and Hunter Renfroe of the
Eugene Emeralds was third. The other contestants in the 2013 Home Run Derby were Hillsboro's Yogey Perez-Ramos, Vancouver's L.B.
Dantzler, and Eugene's Trae Santos, who each hit one homer, as well as Everett's Justin Seager and Salem-Keizer's Sam Eberle, who
did not go yard in the first round.
OF NOTE: RH Lars Huijer has recorded a win in 5 of his last 6 starts, going 4-0 with a 0.29 ERA (1 ER, 30.2 ER). He has not allowed a
