Miss World Fiji hosts couples

Miss World Fiji 2013 Caireen Erbsleben, welcomed the newlywedded couples while a crowd gathered eagerly waiting for glimpses of them. This was a unique idea to get five couples married on board, in our bid to raise awareness of the new airline branding, said acting chief executive Aubrey Swift. Fiji itself is a great wedding and honeymoon destination, he added. With our new brand identity and service, based around an authentic Fijian experience, a couples Fijian wedding really can start the moment they set foot on board, said Mr Swift.

The five couples were from Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch and the Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. 441 entries were received from couples entering the competition to take part.

Planning

Fiji Airways regional general manager NZ Shannon Currie said the in-flight wedding had taken several months to plan.

Kiwis have such a strong connection to the Fiji Islands with many choosing to be married in Fiji, and many others spending their honeymoon there and this is why we wanted to do something truly memorable, says Mr Currie. Newly wedded Liahn Heperi and Wade Herewini said they were stunned by the announcement of tying the knot mid-air.

The excitement even got bigger seeing the welcome reception and the friendly Fijian hospitality, stressed Ms Heperi. And for the newly-wed couples a twonight honeymoon was also included in the tropical paradise of Fiji at either the Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa Fiji, or Radisson BLU Resort Fiji Denarau Island.

Fiji Airways Sets New Guinness Record CWM Undergoes Major Renovations The Colonial War Memorial (CWM) for it to be replaced. Commissioning of
Hospital in Suva is undergoing major renovation works worth close to $10million. As part of the renovation a number of modern medical equipment will be installed and commissioned. A new urology centre will be commissioned which will include a state of the art lithotripter. A Lithotripter is a machine that pulverizes kidney stones by ultrasound as an alternative to their surgical removal. This will cost the Fijian Government $1.3million. We are commissioning a new CT scanner. The one that we have right now is nine years old and we saw a need the new CWMH CT scanner services on August 30, said Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma. Apart from commissioning of all these machines, two new operation theatres will be ready at CWM by the end of this year while work on another two will be completed by mid next year. So all in all CWM will have a total of 13 operating theatres by mid next year which is a great achievement itself. Dr Sharma says with the increase in the number of operating theatres, the ministry would recruit more surgeons and anesthetists to cater for the increasing need.

Fiji Airways, Fijis national airline, has set a new Guinness world record. In giving five couples a wedding to remember midair 41,000 feet above sea level aboard its A330 on August 7, Fiji's flag carrier flew its way into the Guinness World Records for the worlds Highest Altitude Wedding on an Aeroplane. The minimum altitude required to set the new world record was 40,000 feet. The record was made official by Guinness World Records adjudicator Chris Sheedy, who joined the couples on their flight to Fiji. The adjudicator verified the altitude and the wedding ceremony in New Zealand airspace, and awarded Fiji Airways the record. Fiji Airways acting chief executive

Aubrey Swift said the airline was excited to claim the achievement. This was a unique idea to get five couples married on board, in our bid to raise awareness of the new airline branding and of Fiji as a wedding and honeymoon destination, said Swift. With our new brand identity and service, based around an authentic Fijian experience, a couples Fijian wedding really can start the moment they set foot on board. "We kept this as a surprise for our five couples and it was great to see their reaction when they found out they were part of this world record. They also won a complimentary stay in Fiji courtesy of the Radisson BLU Resort Fiji Denarau Island and The Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa Fiji.

National Federation Party, Fiji Labour Party, Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), either are a continuation of the old parties (NFP and FLP), or a rearrangement/realignment of old parties (SODELPA and PDP). To determine whether the parties are multiracial or not will depend on the support given to the parties in terms of their political power bases. Perhaps, two questions that we need to ask are, whether these parties will be able to attract multiracial or multiethnic members and hence extend their political power bases and how can they achieve multiracialism under current socio-political and economic realities in Fiji? Dr Durutalo said parties are a microcosm of society and they normally reflect the socio-political and economic arrangements within a country. Future composition of political parties Parties are a modern means of constituting leadership and representative democracy. They directly reflect the socio-political and economic realities in any society at a particular point in time. Political parties in the developed world like Australia and New Zealand for example, embrace liberal democracy

as a result of their unique historical evolution as settler colonies. Dr Durutalo said over the years their party systems have stabilised and they embrace political values that are acceptable to most citizens. Regardless of which party is in power, political values have been grounded into their political systems and are continuously respected and upheld. Political parties in developing countries like Fiji can become truly multiracial but people have to lay the groundwork or infrastructure for multiracialism first and foremost. Questions that need to be asked are: What small steps can be taken to make people aware of the benefits of multiracial politics and hence the formation of multi-racial parties? What are some common denominators that can lead to the formation of multiracial political parties in Fiji given socio-political and economic realities? Can legislation through the formation of a multiparty/multiethnic Cabinet enhance the chances of multiracial politics in Fiji? Multiracial politics and multiracial political parties will pave the way forward for Fiji. However, this should be allowed to emanate from the people themselves through collective reasoning and consensus.

A New Zealand geopolitical analyst says the time is right for New Zealand to change its policy on Fiji. 36th Parallels Paul Buchanan says the most obvious sign that the policy hasnt worked is that the United Nations has welcomed Fijian peacekeepers in greater numbers since the 2006 takeover, in defiance of requests from Australia and New Zealand that they not be used. He said: The sanctions regime has not worked and the National government needs to admit that to itself, then admit it to its partners and finally admit it to the Fijians and from that, start anew with an approach that recognises Fijian sovereignty, recognises that the type of governance in Fiji is not ideal from our point of view but we need to engage them nevertheless. His comments came after the Australian opposition coalitions foreign affairs spokesperson, Julie Bishop, (pictured) said this week that a new government would normalise relations with Fiji. Both Australia and New Zealand placed travel sanctions after the 2006

317 Officers On Red List

POLICE Commissioner BrigadierGeneral Ioane Naivalurua has warned 317 officers on his "red alert list" to shape up before the end of the year. Speaking at the police parade at Lautoka's Churchill Park, Brig. Naivalurua said it was critical for all officers to be fit and alert at all times. "We have 317 officers on the red alert list and if we do not turn them around quickly, they are heading down to the other side," he said. "So please, officers in the West, look after yourself. We need everybody on board as we head towards 2014. "It is absolutely critical to be alert and ready at all times. We cannot be alert if we are not well, sickly or not fit. That is why there has been a great emphasis on your health." Brig. Naivalurua also stressed the importance of being a good role model to their customers. "Many times I have spoken about responsibilities, duties and professionalism. Let me remind you that you and I, as police officers, are custodians of what is right. "But the challenge comes about in doing what is right and doing it right. That continues to be the challenge for you and I in the police force. "We know what is right, we represent what is right, we enforce what is right but we don't do the right things sometimes and we do not do it right." Brig. Naivalurua challenged officers to be loyal and to care for one another. "No one else will do the work for the police force except you and I. "I ask you to watch your stations, guard your stations, look after your men and women, look after their families and attend to everything that you are required to attend to. "We cannot win the respect and the trust of the public if we fail to do the simple task we are required to do on a daily basis." Brig. Naivalurua said spiritual motivation was also a key ingredient of a successful officer. "If you are one of those who failed to pray or ask for divine guidance and strengthening, I will tell you today that you are missing the mark. "You need to do that. Our work is challenging, difficult at times, so we need to seek strength and motivational power to be able to go through the day. "I encourage you as we approach 2014 to guide us."

Costa Rica And Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

The Republic of Costa Rica and the Republic of Fiji formalised diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in New York this week. The Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations, Ambassador Eduardo Ulibarri and his Fiji counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqu establishing diplomatic relations between the two States. The communiqu expresses the desire of both countries to establish their diplomatic relations in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, guided by the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and international law. The communiqu calls for the promotion and strengthening of bonds of friendship and cooperation between Costa Rica and Fiji in political, economic, cultural, humanitarian and other fields. Following the formalisation ceremony, Ambassadors Ulibarri and Thomson held talks on areas of common interest between their two countries. Ambassador Thomson reported on the steady progress of the Fiji Roadmap towards the achievement of sustainable democracy with parliamentary elections to be held in Fiji in 2014. In concluding the meeting, the Ambassadors assured each other of the mutual support of their Missions in the furtherance of common causes in multilateral affairs.

Education Links NZ And Fiji

Education is an important and longstanding linkage between Fiji and New Zealand, says NZ Acting Head of Mission to Fiji Phillip Taula. Speaking during the presentation of prizes to winners of an essay competition organised by the NZ High Commission, Taula said the competition has provided them an opportunity to engage with secondary schools throughout Fiji and to give students the challenge of addressing relevant and diverse topics. We havent been disappointed. The

competition has grown to become one of the high commissions most significant activities in terms of public diplomacy and outreach, Taula said. Sixty-five schools took part in the essay competition which was won by Mahatma Ghandi Secondary School student Abhishek Kumar. The competition, which is now in its fifth year, is organised by the NZ High Commission and the Fiji Association in Auckland. The essay focused on Sir Edmund Hillarys life.

THE first $20million sugar shipment is being loaded at the Malau wharf in Labasa this week. FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan said the shipment would only carry the 20,000 tonnes of raw sugar from the Labasa mill. "After this shipment, we expect around 15,000 tonnes of sugar to remain in the Malau storage facility as the crushing season enfolds," he said. "This is the first sugar shipment out of the country so far this year which will only consist of sugar from the Labasa mill. "We are expecting the next shipment of

sugar next month." Out of the 20,000 tonnes of sugar for export, about 19,000 tonnes loaded was from last season. Mr Khan said the cane supply to the mill had picked up after working closely with farmers in the North. The Labasa mill is expected to crush about 550,000 tonnes of cane to produce 55,000 tonnes of raw sugar this season. The season has been described as a success so far. Last year the Labasa mill ended its crushing season in October.

Fiji Among Best In ICT

FIJI has been recognized as making the third largest improvement in intercommunications technology in a rating of 150 countries in the world. This was revealed by Attorney-General and Minister for Telecommunications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while opening the 6th Asia Pacific Telecommunity Policy and Regulation Forum for the Pacific in Nadi. "Fiji's performance in delivering ICT services and infrastructure to its citizens has been ranked amongst the world's most dynamic by the International Telecommunication Union," he said. "In the ITU's annual review of the delivery of ICT infrastructure and services to the populations of more than 150 countries, Fiji was given special recognition. Fiji tied for the third largest improvement of any country, moving up five places to 88th." He said the ITU attributed Fiji's high ranking to strong growth in mobile broadband penetration, extension of 3G coverage, the development of Fiji's and the Pacific's first national broadband plan. He added the recognition was also a result of Fiji's commitment to making internet access affordable and the expansion of e-Government services. "We have liberalized the telecommunications market and introduced actual competition in Fiji for the first time. "This has driven up access to mobile services and made mobile connectivity affordable." He said mobile coverage including 3G now extends to 95 per cent of the country.

13-Year Prison Term For Rapist

A 38- year-old diver was sentenced to 13 years in prison for raping his physically impaired and mentally retarded niece. It is alleged that on the eve of February 6, 2011 the accused had sex with the victim without her consent. The complainant was just over 14 years of age at the time of the incident. The accused had forcefully dragged the victim to the beach, removed all her clothes and raped her even though she was pleading because of the pain. Presiding judge, Justice Janaka Bandara, in sentencing the accused said the aggravating factors were that the victim was physically impaired and mentally retarded. Secondly, was the use of considerable amount of force that the accused used to get the victim to surrender to him. The use of force to have sexual satisfaction from a girl of this nature is something to be considered very seriously, Justice Bandara said. He told the accused that the victim was his niece and that fact alone amounts to a serious breach of trust. Being the uncle of the victim, you did not have any respect for the social and cultural bonds that prevail in the society, he said. You were not at any time remorseful for your actions. You allowed the victim to be tormented once again during the trial process. In mitigation the accused had submitted that he was 38 years of age and living in a de-facto relationship with his partner and her three children. He was a diver and earned $100 a week and contributed from this income for the wellbeing of the family. He was also a first offender with a no criminal record. Justice Bandara handed an interim sentence of 16 years imprisonment for the accused then reduced three years out of the interim period of imprisonment for that mitigatory ground. His final sentence is 13 years imprisonment and was ordered serve a minimum term of 11 years before being eligible for parole. A permanent Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO) was also ordered in place for the protection of the victim.

Two more proposed political parties are talking about registering later this year. The big question will be whether they will be able to walk the talk and meet the registration requirements. These now require parties to have substance and structure and be transparent and accountable. Heres who they are: GREENS One is the proposed Green Party led by former radio presenter, long-time civil society personality and former Bainimarama government minister Bernadette Rounds-Ganilau. It is yet to apply to re-register after being formed by Mrs Rounds-Ganilau in 2008 and so far appears more talk than substance. When questioned about its progress, Mrs Rounds-Ganilau requested to wait awhile before they can make an official statement. Mrs Rounds-Ganilau added that she is waiting to hear from the UFDF consortium before making any statements. UFDF is the group which calls itself the United Front for a Democratic Fiji. It is not registered as a political body itself. But three registered parties the Social Democratic Liberal Party, Fiji Labour Party and the National Federation Party say they are part of it. All three are essentially what are

regarded as the old political parties which were active before the 2006 takeover, and battled each other back then. The only new party to have so far registered to contest next years elections, the Peoples Democratic Party, has distanced itself from any involvement in the UFDF group. YOUTH PARTY The other group talking about registration is the proposed National Youth Party led by schoolteacher Nayagodamu Korovou. He says they have enough names to register but are waiting for the right time. He said: We have more than 5000 names registered, and we are looking forward to register when the time is right. This is when the constitution is out and when a neutral supervisor of election is elected. However, some other youth groups have said Mr Korovou does not speak for them. Mr Korovou said the proposed party has sponsors and is just waiting for the right moment. The proposed National Youth Party is also keeping a close eye on the emergence of the party to be led by the Prime Minister. We are watching what is happening

now and there is wisdom in waiting and not rushing into it, Mr Korovou said. Meanwhile, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with which Mr Korovou is employed has not been formally informed about his political aspirations. A human resource personnel at the churchs head office in Samabula said theres only been informal discussions about the issue. All we are hearing is that he is seeking to enter the elections. It will be a conflict of interest if he takes part because as far as the church is concerned, we have to be neutral on these things. It is understood that once the proposed National Youth Party is registered, the church would seek a directive from its area office in New Zealand regarding Mr Korovous position. His immediate superior and principal at the LDS college, Tipo Solomone said he was aware of Mr Korovous proposed party preparations. Weve talked about it and we are aware of his preparations and yes we are concerned because this requires a lot of commitment, Mr Solomone said. He added that the college was yet to formally inform the churchs head office about Mr Korovous election

plans. Once his party is registered we will be informing the head office, Mr Solomone said. It is likely that Mr Korovou will be asked to resign from his church job if he goes ahead as the church remains a strongly apolitical institution.

Olympic Gold Medalist Shane Gould teaching Tagaqe District School children.

Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji and the Australian High Commission have teamed up to sponsor the community drowning prevention program conducted by 3-time Olympic swim gold medalist Shane Gould and her husband, swim technician Milton Nelms. Officials from the high commission and the 5-star resort accompanied Gould and Nelms to Tagaqe District School for the swim program. Acting Deputy Australian High Commissioner Karinda Daloisio said the high commission was extremely pleased to be a part of a program which teaches people to swim to save their lives. We are very pleased to support this program which is promoting water safety awareness across Fiji and we are very pleased to be partnering with the Outrigger, Shane Gould and Milton Nelms and we look forward to more cooperation in the future, Ms. Daloisio stated. Ms. Daloisio said the high commission is also working with the Fiji Surfing Association to provide life saving training. We have one of our Australian volunteers working with that program at the moment; its important that we

share skills and learn from each other. Australia has a long history of surf life saving and we really believe that we can provide some new skills training to Fijians in this important area, she added. Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji General Manager Peter Hopgood was equally ecstatic about the program, stating the resort is delighted to be able to invite Shane Gould and Milton Nelms to conduct this program to help our young people on the Coral Coast learn drowning prevention techniques. Shane and Milt are world class swimming trainers and to be able to watch them teach our young children at Tagaqe school today was just amazing. If we can save at least one child, then we know that these lessons have become life skills for these children, Mr. Hopgood stated. Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji was recognised as the Best Deluxe Accommodation in Fiji at the 2012 AON Excellence in Tourism awards, as well as the Best Fine Dining Restaurant for its Ivi Restaurant. Thumbs Up For Chewing Gum

THE Fiji Dental Association (FDA) is encouraging people to chew sugar-free gum at least three times a day for 20 minutes as this helps improve oral health. President Dr Vikash Singh said some sugarfree gums, like Extra Professional White distributed by SCA Hygiene Australiasia Ltd, contain xylitol which is a toothfriendly, nonfermentable sugar alcohol. "Xylitol has the most promising oral health promotional ingredient, and FDA is extremely excited about the Extra Professional White chewing gum and we hope that more products with xylitol are made available in Fiji," Dr Singh said. He says chewing gum helps stimulate the body's most important natural defence against tooth decay which is saliva. Saliva in turn helps protect teeth in restoring the pH balance in the mouth neutralising plaque acids, helps clear away food debris that may be lodged between the teeth and gums and naturally remineralises acid spots on teeth. "So if you chew sugar-free gum, like gums that have xylitol, it will help increase the saliva in your mouth and at the same time won't feed the plague that naturally thrives and survives on sugar," Dr Singh said. He added apart from brushing three times a day, chewing sugar-free chewing gum that contains xylitol would help improve oral health. "Oral disease is the most common disease in the community. "The unfortunate part is that when people come in to seek attention, it's a bit too late; it is only when they have pain. "The presence of pain in the teeth means there is advance decay. "A lot of times tooth decay is symptomless so when the decay starts, you won't even know. The same thing can be said about gum disease. "We are happy to promote any scientifically proven products that promote oral health."

IT was an exciting moment for 42 junior students of Noco District School in Rewa when they visited the Fiji Times newsroom. The Form Three and Four students were enthusiastic to learn how the newsroom operates and the different work carried out by the workers. Form captain Aporosa Qekolevuka, 14, said their visit was part of the school's educational program to expose students to the real world and see how the nation had developed over the years. "We always read The Fiji Times and we wonder how they gather the information," young Aporosa said. "It's interesting to know especially how each section competes to get the best

story out to the people." He said when the students were informed about their planned visit, they were excited and at the same time wondered how newspapers reached other parts of Fiji. Schoolteacher Sakiusa Kuruduadua said their visit was to enable students to learn the changes that had taken place since the newspaper started in 1869. He said while technology was more evident in the structure of the newsroom, students also wanted to know how the work of journalists had changed in terms of gathering news and informing members of the public. They also visited the Reserve Bank of Fiji and the museum.

PS Challenges Northern Division School Heads The Ministry of Education permanent To value the importance of teaching
secretary Dr Brij Lal delivered a challenging address while opening the Cakaudrove School Heads Education Conference at Montfort Technical Institute in Savusavu this week. In his opening remarks Dr Lal said As School Heads you have to ensure we are fully preparing our children for the world of tomorrow. You cannot do anything less than the very best. I believe in the power and importance of teaching; that if you take children, from whatever background, and maximize the amount of time they have with a great teacher then you can see them make astounding progress said Dr Lal.

Two former employees of the Department of National Roads and a businessman appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court charged with bribery and abuse of office. Firoz Mohammed, Iliesa Turagacati and Navitalai Tamanitoakula appeared before Magistrate Chaitanya Lakshman. The charges were brought against them by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Mohammed is being charged with one count of bribery for using influence in regards to contracts and one count of obtaining a financial advantage. It is alleged that between February 27 and July 20, 2012, Mohammed, whilst being the director of TF Jan Bulldozing Company Limited, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, offered an advantage namely payments amounting to $93,000 to Iliesa Turagacati. Also on the said date Mohammed caused false invoices to be created and submitted to the Fiji Roads Authority (formerly known as the Department of National Roads) and circumvented the verification process in submitting claims and received payments that they were not entitled to. Turagacati is charged with abuse of office and bribery for using influence in regard to contracts. On the said date Turagacati is alleged to

It is also alleged that Turagacati abused the authority of his office and did an arbitrary act for the purpose of gain and caused payments not eligible to be made amounting to $3.132 million to be paid to TF Jan Bulldozing Company, which was an act prejudicial to the rights of the Fiji Roads Authority. Tamanitoakula is charged with abuse of office. It is alleged that Tamanitoakula, who was the senior accounts officer of Fiji Roads Authority, abused the authority of his office, did an arbitrary act in processing payments amounting to $2.468 million to TF Jan Bulldozing without following proper procedures. MORE than one in four women has been physically abused since the age of 15 by someone other than a husband or intimate partner. This was a finding of the National Research on Women's Health and Life Experiences in Fiji at the end of January this year. The survey, which explored the prevalence, incidence and attitudes to intimate partner violence in Fiji, involved 3193 women between the ages of 18 and 64 years. "We are greatly concerned with this data, especially when it validates assumptions we have made over the years regarding violence against women and girls," said Fiji Women's Crisis Centre director Shamima Ali. In the summary of the main findings, the survey showed that one in 10 women had been sexually abused since the age of 15; the combined national

The survey recorded that almost one in five women was sexually abused under the age of 15 years and for 5 per cent of women, their first sexual experience was forced. "The full analysis of the survey and recommendations will be presented in December during the 16 Days of Activism and will provide a solid platform to design and develop strategies for prevention; and responses to survivors," Ms Ali said. Meanwhile, the FWCC has recorded 509 cases in the first six months of the year. The Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation shared innovative skills transferring ideas with retired professional volunteers at the Fiji Pensioners Association AGM last Saturday in Suva. Addressing the pensioners, Foundation Executive, Ambalika Devi, stated that the latest developments in mobile and communications technology provides the perfect opportunity for the experienced retirees to share the vast wealth of knowledge they have with the current generation of children and youths. There is a dire need for the senior citizens of Fiji to transfer knowledge and life skills to the younger generation, so that the younger generation can actually get a real life insight to what it takes to live healthier and happy life, said Ambalika. Ambalika expressed ideas on how younger generations can improve wellness and happiness during their lifetimes by taking advice from senior citizens. We will initiate a research project with our NGO partners with a focus on aged care that will examine seniors thoughts on growing older and how they dealt with life with the intent of passing along the wisdom to younger people. The proposed survey will investigate how they lived through situations involving marriage, parenting, aging, happiness, career and the loss of loved ones. It will also try to

New Insight For Senior Citizens And Pensioners

capture real life video stories on how to deal with loss of family members and friends, managing ill-health, getting over depression, sharing health tips and more. Ambalika spoke about the importance of social interaction and being healthy not only to live longer, but to avoid chronic illnesses like diabetes, stroke, and heart disease, that can affect quality of life and physical independence. A supplementary survey will also look to examine how young people respond to advice and wisdom from older people and how technology will best be used to disseminate the information gathered. Ambalika also spoke about how the Foundations NGO partners can help the members of the organization achieve better personal health through proper nutrition, regular exercise and creating a stress free retirement. Association President, Mr Hari Raj Naicker, welcomed the initiatives of the Foundation and said that the proposed program would certainly add a spice to the lives of the retirees. The Jeevan, the newsletter of Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation illustrates the different programs of the Foundation, like mKidney, mCancer, mHealth, mWomen etc and members can access these services by dialing *979# and @727# said, Mr Naicker. The Foundation team shared how the seniors can access to disability ability devices like wheel chair, walking aids etc and get tips on managing disability challenges. Mr Naicker said that the members of the association had vast knowledge and expertise having served as diplomats overseas, permanent secretaries, senior civil servants, executive positions in private sectors, high school principals and the likes. The members are willing to serve in NGOs and statuary bodies with the objective of helping the younger generation to achieve higher goals and contribute towards nation building. These pensioners are available throughout the country, which makes them easy to identify local needs. The partnership with the Vodafone Foundation will provide us with a valuable forum to address needs of the society by sharing the vast magnitude of knowledge and experience we have, said Mr Naicker.

The 22-year-old was the post master at the Daku Postal Agency on Kadavu where he stole about $80,000. The audit revealed that between October 1, 2011 and October 20, of the same year, there was a cash shortage of $36,970. It was said in court that further checks by the audit team showed that from July, 2010 to October 20, 2011, $63,727 was recorded missing.

In his caution interview, Umota said on 26 occasions he had sent telegraphic money orders (TMOs) on credit which amounted to $81,163.30; this included fees for the money transactions. In mitigation, Umota said he was a first offender and wanted to be forgiven. He was eventually jailed for 18 months. The court ruled that any party not satisfied with the sentence could appeal to the High Court within 28 days.

Being the uncle of the victim, you

did not have any respect for the social and cultural bonds that prevail in the society, he said.

The Duke of Edinburgh's recovery from abdominal surgery has been faster than expected, according to Royal aides

Prince Philip To Return To Work 'Within Days'

Prince Philip is recovering faster than doctors had expected and is set to return to work within days, royal aides have told the media. The Duke of Edinburgh, currently resting at Sandringham after undergoing abdominal surgery in June, will return to public duties "earlier than we had imagined", one Palace aide said. On August 12 the Duke will "ease back in" to work by presenting medals at the Royal Society Of Edinburgh (RSE). After making a "steady and good recovery" from his operation, this will be the 92-year-old's first engagement since attending a Buckingham Palace garden party the day he was admitted to hospital. The engagement at the RSE, where the Duke is an honorary fellow, takes place en route to Balmoral where the Prince plans to join the Queen for the summer break. The presentation of medals to Professors Sir John Cadogan, Michael

A male nurse has been charged with raping a patient at a public hospital in southern Brisbane. The 40-year-old man has been charged with two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He allegedly raped a female patient. The accused appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court and was released on bail.

Ferguson and Sir Ian Wood, will be the ninth of its kind conducted by the Prince since 2001. It has been understood the Duke of Edinburgh has been undertaking "light duties" in private since beginning a two-month period of convalescence. But he is yet to be seen in public since departing the London Clinic on June 17. In what was his fourth admittance to hospital in 18 months, the Duke underwent exploratory abdominal surgery. Prince Philip was due to have spent up to two weeks at the clinic, but was discharged after just 11 days smiling and shaking hands with staff as he walked to his car. The Duke is yet to meet his nearly two-week old great grandson, Prince George of Cambridge. Palace aides have not ruled out a private visit to Balmoral by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge over the summer.

The iconic Washington Post newspaper has been sold for $280 million to Amazon's chief executive and founder Jeff Bezos. The deal is pocket change for Mr Bezos, whose personal wealth is estimated at $31 billion. The surprise deal follows the New York Times Co's sale of the Boston Globe for $70 million. It is a further indication of the unprecedented challenges newspapers are facing as advertising revenue and readership declines. Washington Post chairman and chief executive Donald E Graham, whose family owns the paper, said it would be better served with another owner. "I, along with Katharine Weymouth and our board of directors, decided to sell only after years of familiar newspaperindustry challenges made us wonder if there might be another owner who would be better for the Post," Graham said. "Jeff Bezos's proven technology and business genius, his long-term approach and his personal decency make him a uniquely good new owner for the Post." Mr Bezos, who has built Seattlebased Amazon.com into a shopping and online technology force over the past two decades, made a small foray

into media earlier this year with a small investment in internet news site Business Insider. In a letter published on the Washington Post's website, Mr Bezos said there would be no radical change. "The values of The Post do not need changing," he wrote. "The paper's duty will remain to its readers and not to the private interests of its owners." Amazon.com is to be kept separate from the Post deal, according to the Washington Post. The transaction covers The Washington Post and other publishing businesses, including the Express newspaper, The Gazette Newspapers, Southern Maryland Newspapers, Fairfax County Times, El Tiempo Latino and Greater Washington Publishing. The Washington Post is perhaps best known as the employer of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the two reporters who uncovered the Watergate scandal 40 years ago which ultimately forced president Richard Nixon out of office. Mr Bezos is the latest US entrepreneur to get into the newspaper business. He follows Warren Buffett, who has bought an empire of community newspapers in recent years.

The man is employed as a nurse at a hospital on Brisbane's south side that cannot be identified for legal reasons. In a statement, the Metro South Health Service says the man has been suspended while the allegations are investigated. A spokeswoman for the health service says they are cooperating with police. The accused man is due to appear in court again next month.

Virgin Australia says it expects to report a loss of $110 million this financial year due to tough competition in the aviation market, restructuring costs and the carbon tax. Australia's second-biggest airline says the loss would come in at about $50 million if restructuring costs from its purchase of regional airline Skywest were excluded. The company posted a profit of nearly $23 million in 2012. In a statement to share market, Virgin chief executive John Borghetti said he expects the restructure to create higher profits this financial year. "We now have the right platform in the Australian market to generate sustainable earnings benefits," he said.

Virgin Australia Blames Projected $110M Loss On Competition, Restructuring Costs

"The preliminary results for June and July indicate positive trends in both yield and loads, demonstrating strength and momentum building into 2014 financial year." Virgin says early results for June and July suggest bookings and capacity are both improving this year.

A young Indian woman who grew up in Mumbai's red-light district facing poverty and sexual abuse has overcome the odds to win a scholarship to study in New York. Shweta Katti, 18, left for America last Thursday to study at the liberal arts Bard College, where she hopes to read psychology. Afterwards she wants to return to India and help other young women in her community. "It's my childhood dream. I didn't think it would finally happen," she told the reporter before leaving Mumbai, where she grew up in a brothel. Katti's determination won her a place this year in Newsweek's list of 25 "Young Women To Watch" aged under-25, alongside Pakistani schoolgirl and activist Malala Yousufzai who was shot in the head by the Taliban. It is a long way from Katti's early childhood experiences of abuse and harassment in Mumbai's notorious Kamathipura neighbourhood. "You would see everyday someone beating up a woman, the police coming unexpectedly at anytime, and women selling their bodies - they were not happy," Katti said.

Mumbai Teenager Beats Odds, Leaves Red-Light Zone For US Degree

"Men would ask to sleep with me, it was so embarrassing, but I had to face it. My father abused me, many people abused me, but my mum was with me always saying: 'You are the best, you can do anything'." The teenager, who describes herself as "a tough-skinned girl", said she faced discrimination "from all sides" at school because of her poor background and low caste status. She credits her mother, a factory worker, as her "inspiration" and says the local charity Kranti - meaning "revolution" in Hindi - also played a vital role in helping her achieve her dreams. The group's aim is to empower girls from Mumbai's red-light areas "to become agents of social change", and a small group of them live at Kranti's north Mumbai apartment, where Katti moved two years ago. Here she was able to work on her English language skills and experience therapy, which sparked her interest in psychology. "I really think it can change somebody. I started thinking openly and respecting my background and myself," she said.

The US government has sued Bank of America for defrauding investors in the sale of $850 million in mortgagebacked securities ahead of the housing bust. The two civil lawsuits are the latest legal headache for the second-largest U.S. bank, which has already agreed to pay in excess of $45 billion to settle disputes stemming from the 2008 financial crisis. Bank of America is accused of lying to investors about the riskiness of the mortgage loans backing the securities in parallel lawsuits filed by Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The bank intentionally avoided performing adequate due diligence on them, leading to investor losses surpassing $100 million, the suits said. Unlike some of the other sub-primebased mortgage securities that soured during the housing bust and spawned messy litigation, the mortgages were

sold as "prime" loans, meaning they purportedly had a low likelihood of falling into default, the suit said. The high rating of the loans "signified a safe and conservative investment and justified the high prices," said the complaint. Bank of America says 'prime' loan ratings justified However, the suit alleges the loans were far riskier than Bank of America said. It cited the bank's former chief executive, Ken Lewis, as having referred to one type of loan included in the securities, "wholesale" loans executed through third-parties, as "toxic waste." We are not responsible for the housing market collapse that caused mortgage loans to default at unprecedented rates. Bank of America spokesman Despite the "prime" rating, at least 23 percent of the mortgages in the securities have defaulted or were delinquent as of June 2013, according to the complaint. A Bank of America spokesman denied the bank was responsible for the losses. In an emailed statement, he argued that the "prime" designation was justified, saying the loans in question had performed better than similar loans originated and securitized at the time by other financial institutions. Instead, he blamed the losses on the general downturn of the market and economy, which sank into deep recession in 2008-2009. Lawsuit says BOA loans did not meet standards And he said the buyers of the securities were "sophisticated investors who had ample access to the underlying data." "We are not responsible for the housing market collapse that caused mortgage loans to default at unprecedented rates and these securities to lose value as a result," he said. The government argues that more than 40 percent of the loans in one of the

bonds did not meet Bank of America's own underwriting standards. Many had "glaring" problems such as overstated income for the borrowers, or fake employment data, that made them "wholly inconsistent" with a prime rating, the Justice Department said. "As a result of this lack of due diligence, Bank of America had no basis to make many of the representations it made in the offering documents regarding the credit quality of the underlying mortgages," it said. In parallel action the Securities and Exchange Commission also levelled fraud charges against the bank over the same 2008 mortgage security offerings. Bank of America has been damaged to a greater extent by the housing bust than some other rival banks, thanks in part to an ill-timed purchase of Countrywide Financial, once the country's largest originator of mortgages. The bank's shares closed 1.1 percent lower at $14.64 in trade Tuesday .

'Massive' Fire Shuts Kenya's International Airport In Nairobi

A large fire has forced the closure of Kenya's international airport in the capital Nairobi. The blaze at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has caused serious damage, a Nairobi ministry official said. Images on Kenyan media showed flames rising high into the sky and clouds of black smoke billowing out of the main arrivals and departures terminal. Firefighters trying to stop the fire spreading have been hampered by shortages of water and the interior ministry appealed for traffic to give way to trucks ferrying water to the airport. All flights into and out of the airport, except emergency landings, have been cancelled and all roads around the airport have been closed. The Kenyan Airports Authority has urged people to stay away from the airport as the emergency operation continues. The fire, which broke out around dawn, is believed to have started in the immigrations area of the arrivals hall. Passengers and staff were moved to safety and there have been no reports of any injuries. Arrivals and immigration sections 'totally damaged' Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre said while the blaze had been brought under control in the international departures areas, the arrivals terminal was still alight. Government official Mutea Iringo said: "There is a serious fire at JKIA (airport), but we are doing everything possible to avert a crisis. "Apart from emergency landings, all flights into and out of JKIA have been cancelled ... [the] airport has been shut down." Mr Iringo said the fire was "massive" and that the arrivals and immigration sections had been "totally damaged". Flights are being diverted to other airports, including the port city of Mombasa. The airport serves as a regional hub for east Africa, with many longdistance international flights landing there to connect to countries across the region.

Jomo Kenyatta airport is currently undergoing expansion with a new terminal being built to ease congestion. Senior transport ministry official Michael Kamau described the fire as a

"major crisis". The blaze comes two days after aircraft were delayed for several hours after the failure of a fuel hydrant needed for refuelling the planes.

George W. Bush has successfully undergone a heart procedure after doctors discovered a blockage in an artery, a spokesman for the former U.S. president said today. Bush spokesman Freddy Ford said a stent was inserted during a procedure Tuesday at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. The blockage was discovered Monday during Bush's annual physical at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, where the nation's 43rd president lives.

George W. Bush Undergoes Heart Procedure

Ford said the blockage was opened with no complications. He says the 67-year-old Bush was expected to be discharged Wednesday. Ford described Bush as being "in high spirits" and eager to return home. Bush plans to resume his normal schedule Thursday. Ford also said Bush is grateful to the skilled medical professionals who have cared for him and encourages everyone to get regular checkups.

U.S. Boy, 2, Dies After Serving As Muslims In Australia Celebrate The Best Man At Parents Wedding End Of Ramadan With Eid Festival
Muslims across Australia have filled mosques and public spaces to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The festival of Eid al-Fitr traditionally occurs with the first sighting of the new moon and brings to a close the end of a month of fasting from sunrise to sunset. Heavy rain failed to dampen the spirit of those flowing into the Lakemba mosque in Sydney's south-west from early morning for Eid prayers. Roads around the mosque were blocked off to allow the congregation to fill the area. Families and children left the service with pockets filled with sweets, as is Eid custom. Muslim families are also known to visit relatives in hospital and pay their respects to loved ones who have passed away as part of Eid celebrations Rarbie Ziad, 22, attended the prayers and said that for him Eid was all about spending time with family. "After this it's going to be family, so we're going to go see our family, from there we'll go to the cemetery, just visit all our past members, from there come back and have a big lunch." For Mr Noah, the morning was also about more than just religious observance. "When you walk out of the mosque after prayers you see your cousins, your friends," Mr Noah told the reporter. "Eid celebrations are about family and community." The Lakemba event was attended by leaders of Sydney's Muslim community, senior New South Wales police officers, NSW premier Barry O'Farrell and Federal MPs Chris Bowen and Joe Hockey. Melbourne's Muslim community Eid prayers were held at Flagstaff Gardens from 7.30am. The most-recent census figures available, from 2007, indicated there were 340,389 Muslims in Australia, constituting 1.7 per cent of the total population. World events cast shadow on celebrations Amid the day of celebration and sweet treats, many Australian Muslims are concerned about family members

across the Middle East. Mohammed Helel, who lives in Sydney's inner west, has family in Cairo and says Eid will just not be the same this year. "I'm concerned that they will not have that quality time that the Egyptians used to have, the happy times," he said. "For the adults we will enjoy it as much as we can and actually pray for our families in Egypt." He says the effects of the political turmoil in Egypt will play upon his family's enjoyment of the Eid festival. "People in Egypt are not really settled, there are some issues with the military coup and people demanding their rights and so on," Mr Helel said. "In every family there are all differing opinions, and it is not really a happy time as we used to have in Egypt." What is Eid al-Fitr? The festival of Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast in daylight hours. Eid al-Fitr is also known as the "Feast of Breaking the Fast". It falls at the start of the lunar month of Shawwal on the Islamic calendar, although the exact start date can depend on the sighting of the new moon. Muslims flock for early morning prayers on Eid, many of them dressed in their best clothes. Children receive presents, greeting cards are often exchanged and many people adorn their homes with decorations. Money and food are often given to the poor during Eid, and old wrongs are said to be forgiven. Eid feasts, attended by friends and relatives, can last several days in some countries. Sheer khurma (a dish of dates cooked in milk) is usually eaten in the morning of Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Fitr is one of two main Muslim festivals, the other being Eid al-Adha, which falls in October and celebrates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his own son, Ishmael, on Allah's command.

The sauce has a delicious complex flavour that is sure to impress your dinner guests. Great for a hearty meal. Ingredients: 3 Lamb Shanks (a shank per person but just add more for more guests) 5 cloves of garlic roughly chopped 1 cup red wine 2 cups chicken stock 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 large carrot roughly diced 1 large stick of celery roughly diced 1 large onion roughly diced 4 tablespoons of oil 1 tablespoon of Rosemary leaves (fresh is better but dried works well) 1 tablespoon of Thyme leaves (fresh is better but dried works well) Directions: Preheat oven to 180C Place oil in pan and heat until medhigh. Brown lamb shanks on all 3 sides quickly, remove using tongs and add to your casserole dish. Use a heavy cast iron casserole dish (also called a dutch oven) with a lid but if you don't have one, you can use an oven roasting pan and just add a little more stock/water so that the lamb is half covered and cover with tin foil. Next turn the heat down and cook onions, carrot, and celery. When onions turn clear add garlic and cook for a further minute. Tip the onions, garlic, celery, carrot and oil into casserole dish. Add the rest of the ingredients into the casserole dish and give it a quick stir. Cover and place in the oven for 2 hours. Serve on mash potato, use a large spoon to add a little of the sauce to each dish. YUM!

Airline to ban dogs on flights or move them 5 rows away from allergy sufferers

Air Canada To Accommodate Flyers With Pet Allergies

Python That Strangled Young Brothers Was In Glass Enclosure In Flat, Police Reveal

An Air Canada passenger with a severe dog allergy has prompted the airline to make arrangements for future flyers suffering from the same affliction. Marley Greenglass spent a flight from Toronto to Phoenix in the throes of an allergy attack caused by a dog under the seat ahead of her. Greenglass complained to the Canadian Transportation Agency, which reviewed the case and deemed pet allergies to both cats and dogs to be a disability. The agency posted the decision this month stating that when a passenger with a disability identifies themselves, the country's airline should, either ban dogs from the flight, or keep them at least five rows away depending on the aircraft's filtration system. "For a certain number of people who are animal-allergic, yes, it can be a problem," said Vancouver allergist Dr. Amin Kanini. Previously the agency has deemed cat allergies to be a disability, but no rulings were issued on dog allergy disabilities. Passengers will be required to provide evidence of their allergy in order for the airline to accommodate their health issue. Air Canada previously made a decision to accommodate seeing eye dogs for visually impaired passengers. The airline has said that if a crossover should happen, the priority will go to whomever booked their flight first. "The agency found that, as Air Canada does not provide the appropriate accommodation measures. Air Canada's policy/procedure, as it relates to the carriage of dogs in the aircraft in which a person with a disability due to an allergy of dogs is travelling, constitutes an obstacle to the mobility of Mrs. Greenglass and of other persons with a dog allergy disability," said the Canadian Transportation Agencys statement on the issue. The agency has given Air Canada until Sept. 16 to finalize how it will accommodate these passengers. This decision only applies to Air Canada as it is the only airline named in the complaint. The agency said that it "examines complaints on a case-by-case basis to determine whether people with disabilities encountered an obstacle to their mobility, and whether the obstacle is undue."

Air Canada told the reporter that it could not comment on the issue as it is still under review. One frustrated Air Canada customer isn't satisfied with how the airline has implemented its policy for cat allergy sufferers to date. The Ottawa woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, is a frequent flyer and did all the required paperwork to create a medical file with the airline that would allow for a "buffer zone" around her seat that is supposed to be cat-free. She paid her allergy doctor $75 to fill out the Air Canada forms and has always given the required 48 hours' notice before a flight to request the buffer zone. But, on a recent trip, the woman said she was "horrified" to learn that not only was a passenger with a cat seated within the buffer zone, but right next to her. "My allergy reaction to cats is that I have trouble breathing it's a really scary process, and to think of that happening at 35,000 feet is really terrifying, she said. The woman was moved to another seat but complained to Air Canada, asking for an explanation and for more details about what pet owners have to go through to board the plane. Because of her medical file, the woman is not allowed to check in online or tag her own bags or make any changes to her itinerary but she says pet owners dont face the same inconveniences. "They treat the pet owners better than those with allergies," she said. When Air Canada responded to her complaint, the company said it has never guaranteed an animal-free environment and that staff have been asked to "do their best to seat customers with allergies and customers with pets as far away from each other as possible." "I realize the system for permitting passengers with allergies and passengers with pets is a sensitive one and unfortunately, we cannot guarantee our process will always be seamless. I can only assure you, we do our best to ensure the safety and comfort of all our passengers to the best of our ability," the customer relations representative wrote. The customer, however, said she doesn't think Air Canada is taking its own policy seriously and that staff aren't properly trained to handle passengers with medical files for allergies.

A four-metre African rock python that strangled two young boys as they slept has been put down, as Canadian police revealed the snake had escaped from an aquarium in the first-floor apartment. Noah and Connor Barthe, aged 4 and 6, died after the reptile escaped from its glass cage through a ventilation shaft and crashed through the ceiling into the room where they were sleeping. A criminal investigation into the deaths has been launched and post-mortems are being carried out. It is still believed the boys were strangled by the snake, which is of a species that constricts its prey. Earlier reports said the python had escaped from its enclosure in a groundfloor exotic pet shop and found its way up to the flat above the store. Sergeant Alain Tremblay from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police now says the snake had been in a glass enclosure on the first floor. It is believed it escaped through the top of its cage into the ventilation system above. Sergeant Tremblay said the python, which reports said weighed about 45kg, had then come down through the ceiling and into the living room where the brothers were sleeping. "(The enclosure) went right up to the ceiling, but inside there was a small hole that was connected to the ventilation system," he revealed. "It's a criminal investigation because two young boys lost their lives." He added it would take time to gather the necessary evidence to present to a

prosecutor. The boys were at a sleepover at the apartment, located above the Reptile Ocean store in Campbellton, a city of about 7,500 in the eastern province of New Brunswick. In a brief statement broadcast live on Canadian television, the boys' great uncle Dave Rose appealed for privacy to give the family time to mourn. "They were two typical children. They enjoyed life to a maximum," he said, his voice breaking with emotion. Mr Rose added the brothers had spent the day before they died at a garden barbecue and then playing at a family farm. The owner of the pet shop, Jean-Claude Savoie, whose son had invited the two brothers over, said he found the boys' bodies as the snake lay by a ventilation duct. "I have many mixed emotions right now. It's ridiculous. I can't believe this is real," he told Radio-Canada. Experts say African rock pythons do not normally view humans as food, and the snake must have been confused when it encountered the boys. Rock pythons, also known as a python sebae, are the biggest snake species in Africa. They are not poisonous, but hugely strong and capable of killing large animals including antelopes. Police have not addressed the legality of keeping the python in a private residence, but a provincial spokeswoman confirmed the African rock python is not a permitted species in New Brunswick.

B.C. health officials are warning hundreds of patients who visited an illegal dentist in Metro Vancouver that they may have been exposed to bloodborne viruses such as hepatitis or HIV. On Wednesday, the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia revealed that a complaint lodged in April had led them to a clandestine dentists office operating out of a Burnaby apartment complex. The occupant, Tung Sheng Wu, also known as David Wu, is believed to have been practicing dentistry without a licence in the province for more than a decade. He is neither qualified nor competent to practice dentistry in British Columbia. We do not know what, if any dental training he has, College CEO Jerome Marburg told reporters. Evidence obtained indicates that he has used materials not approved by Health Canada, and that he did not follow infection control precautions for the cleaning and sterilization of his dental equipment and supplies. The reason for the patients complaint have not been revealed. The reporter could not reach Wu at the home on Wednseday. After obtaining a court order, the college sent investigators, aided by local RCMP, into the Southwood St. residence on May 29 and seized roughly 1,500 patient files and a supply of equipment from a makeshift dental office that was operating out of a single bedroom. Authorities say they are gravely concerned about what was found, and fear Wus clients could have been exposed to serious infectious diseases including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. public health alert Wednesday urging anyone who received dental treatment from Wu to have their blood tested. Because he was not following the infection control procedures expected of a licensed dentist, we believe there is a sufficient risk of exposure to bloodborne viruses to recommend testing for all clients, medical health officer Dr. Michelle Murti said in a statement. Anyone who does not have provincial health coverage can still obtain a free test by calling 1-855-895-7425. The College is also advising Wus patients to seek the attention of proper dentist. [We need] to remedy any mistreatment and to have all unsafe materials placed in their mouths removed, Marburg said. Authorities suspect Wu practiced illegal dentistry in B.C. as far back as the 1990s. He operated out of a home in Port Moody until being exposed in 2003, when the B.C. Supreme Court issued an injunction barring him from identifying himself as a dentist. According to the College, Wu, through a lawyer, consented with the order and indicated that he planned to leave the country within a few months. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday. Anyone who suspects a dentist may not be registered or allowed to practice in B.C. can look him or her up on the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia website. Note: A different, licensed dentist named Dr. David Wu worked out of a legitimate office on 4330 Hastings St. in Burnaby until retiring in 2010. Health officials confirm he is not the person at the centre of their investigation, and his former patients have no cause to be alarmed.

Canadians are living longer than ever before. Most of us would consider that good news. But longer lives could pose new funding risks for many pension plans and their members. The Canadian Institute of Actuaries has just released a new draft set of mortality tables that suggests that the average Canadian woman at age 60 can now look forward to another 29.4 years of life an increase of 2.7 years over the old mortality tables. The average 60-year-old man can now expect an additional 2.9 years of life up to an extra 27.3 years. According to Towers Watson, a major pension consulting firm, that creates a potential problem for the sponsors of defined benefit pension plans, which guarantee predetermined pension benefits for their members. If their plan members are now living longer, as the new mortality study suggests, then pension accounting liabilities could grow, forcing existing members to come up with larger pension contributions. Towers Watson estimates that if the proposed new mortality tables are widely adopted, pension accounting liabilities for many plans could jump "immediately' by five to 10 per cent. "This study highlights the risk that increasing life expectancy can pose for

The Pension Downside Of Living Longer

[defined benefit] plan sponsors" said Gavin Benjamin, a senior retirement consultant at Towers Watson. "Just as sponsors were beginning to see a reduction in their pension deficits due to improvements in the global equity markets and rising interest rates this year, the increase in life expectancy suggested by the [Canadian Institute of Actuaries] study could reverse much of this gain." DC plan members also affected It's not just defined benefit plans that are affected by longer lifespans, Towers Watson warns. Employees who are members of defined contribution (DC) pension plans may need to save more or work longer if they expect to live an extra trwo or three years more. Life annuity payouts, for instance, depend on prevailing long-term interst rates, age, gender, as well as longevity expectations. Longer expected lives mean a smaller monthly payout, all other things being equal. The actuarial study also found that workers in the public sector generally enjoyed a higher overall life expectancy than workers in the private sector. "While this may be good news for public sector employees and pensioners who are largely covered by [defined benefit] plans, there will be financial implications to consider, said Benjamin.

Kids Lying
Question: "I don't know how to get my child to stop lying. We have tried very hard to teach high moral standards. The more I punish him, the more he lies. I'm really worried." Answer: Understanding Your Child, Yourself, and the Situation We have searched and searched and can't find a single adult who never told a lie as a child. Actually we cant' find any adults who never lie now. Isn't it interesting how upset parents get when children have not mastered a virtue they have not mastered themselves? We do not make this point to justify lying, but to show that children who lie are not defective or immoral. We need to deal with the reasons children lie before we can help them give up their need to lie. Usually children lie for the same reasons adults do, they feel trapped, are scared of punishment or rejection, feel threatened, or just think lying will make things easier for everyone. Often lying is a sign of low self-esteem. People think they need to make themselves look better because they don't know they are good enough as they are. Suggestions 1. Stop asking set-up questions that invite lying. A set-up question is one to which you already know the answer. "Did you clean your room?" Instead say, "I notice you didn't clean your room. Would you like to work on a plan for cleaning it?" 2. Focus on solutions to problems instead of blame. "What should we do about getting the chores done?" instead of, "Did you do your chores?" 3. Be honest yourself. Say, "That doesn't sound like the truth to me. Most of us don't tell the truth when we are feeling trapped, scared, or threatened in some way. Why don't we take some time off from this right now? Later I'll be available if you would like to share with me what is going on for you." 4. Respect your children's privacy when they don't want to share with you. Planning Ahead to Prevent Future Problems 1. Help children believe that mistakes are opportunities to learn so they won't believe they are bad and need to cover up their mistakes. 2. Set an example in telling the truth. Share with your children times when it was difficult for you to tell the truth, but you decided it was more important to experience the consequences and keep your self-respect. Be sure this is honest sharing instead of a lecture. 3. Let children know they are unconditionally loved. Many children lie because they are afraid the truth will disappoint their parents. Show appreciation. "Thank you for telling the truth. I know that was difficult. I admire the way you are willing to face the consequences, and I know you can handle them and learn from them." 4. Stop trying to control children. Many children lie so they can find out who they are and do what they want to do. At the same time, they are trying to please their parents by making them think they are doing what they are supposed to do. Life Skills Children Can Learn Children can learn that it is safe to tell the truth in their family. Even when they forget that, they are reminded with gentleness and love. They can learn that their parents care about their fears and mistaken beliefs and will help them overcome them. Parenting Pointers 1. Many children lie to protect themselves from judgment and criticism because the believe it when adults say they are bad. Of course they want to avoid this kind of pain. 2. Remember that who your child is now is not who your child will be forever. If your child tells a lie, don't overreact to the behavior by calling your child a liar. 3. Focus on building closeness and trust in the relationship instead of on the behavior problem. This is usually the quickest way to diminish the behavior that you find objectionable. Booster Thoughts My son was suspended from school. This was his story, "I found some cigarettes in my locker. I don't know how they got there. I was just putting them in my pocket to take them to the principal when a teacher came by and took me to the principal." My thoughts went crazy for a few minutes. "He is lying to us. I'm a failure as a mother. He is going to ruin his life. What will people think?" I was feeling pretty upset, so my feeling compass let me know that I was caught up in my thought system and was not seeing things clearly. I dismissed my compass instead of my thoughts for a minute and used more thoughts to argue with my inner wisdom. "Yes, but this is different. These are really terrible circumstances over which I have no control. How could I possibly see them differently? I am going to have to scold him severely, `ground' him for at least a month, take away all his privileges, and let him know he is ruining his life." Fortunately, I had too much faith in my inner wisdom to take those thoughts seriously. I dismissed my crazy thinking, and inspiration from my inner wisdom quickly surfaced. I then saw the circumstances in a completely different way and felt understanding and compassion for my son's view of the situation. He had just entered junior high school, where the pressure is enormous to follow the crowd rather than to follow common sense. When I got home I listened to my inspiration and knew what to do. I sat down with my son, put my arm around him and said, "I'll bet it's tough trying to figure out how to say no to your friends so you won't be called a nerd or a party pooper." He had been expecting my usual craziness and hardly knew how to respond to my sanity. He tentatively said, "Yeah." I went on. "And I'll bet the only reason you would ever lie to us is because you love us so much you don't want to disappoint us." Tears filled his eyes, and he gave

me a big hug. I responded with tears in my own eyes as we experienced those wonderful feelings of mutual love. I reassured him, "If you think you could ever disappoint us enough to diminish our love, then we are not doing a good enough job of letting you know how

much we love you, unconditionally." We can only guess what the result would have been had I followed my crazy thought to interact wit my son. My guess is that my craziness would have inspired increased rebelliousness instead of increased closeness.

Caffeine Withdrawal Symptoms

Side Effects of Eliminating or Cutting Down on Caffeine
coffee, some caffeine withdrawal symptoms are serious, and caffeine withdrawal has been recognized as a disorder. Learn what to expect from caffeine withdrawal (including when it occurs and which symptoms are common), as well as how to reduce caffeine withdrawal symptoms. When Do Caffeine Withdrawal Symptoms Occur? Whether you've decided to give up caffeine for Lent or reduce caffeine to eliminate symptoms of excess caffeine consumption, you may find that reducing or eliminating caffeine in your diet can result in a range of unpleasant caffeine withdrawal symptoms, such as headaches and irritability. Around 50 percent of people experience caffeine withdrawal symptoms when they cut back on or eliminate caffeine, and experimental studies have shown that around 13 percent of people experience such severe symptoms (such as headaches so severe that they are temporarily unable to work). Typically, the more caffeine you consume, the higher your chance of experiencing caffeine withdrawal symptoms, and the higher the chances of your caffeine symptoms being severe. As little as three consecutive days of caffeine consumption can be enough to cause caffeine withdrawal symptoms after caffeine consumption ends. Caffeine withdrawal symptoms often begin around 12 to 14 hours after stopping caffeine intake. They are typically at their worst after 24 to 48 hours, and can last for up to nine days. Caffeine Withdrawal Symptoms Caffeine withdrawal symptoms vary in type and severity from person to person. These are common caffeine withdrawal symptoms: Chills and/or hot spells Decreased alertness Depressed mood Difficulty concentrating or thinking Digestive issues (usually constipation, but sometimes also nausea and / or vomiting) Fatigue, lethargy and / or sleepiness Headaches, ranging from moderate to severe, and usually starting behind the eyes before spreading Irritability (moderate to extreme) and restlessness Insomnia (Although it seems counterintuitive, this can be an issue for some people!) Muscle stiffness and / or pain Sinus issues (usually blocked sinuses or cold-like symptoms) How to Reduce Caffeine Withdrawal Symptoms The easiest way to reduce caffeine withdrawal symptoms is to drink more caffeine. If you reduced or eliminated caffeine for no particular reason, or for an easily changeable reason ("I ran out of coffee and won't have time to buy more until tomorrow," for example), then drinking more caffeine is the obvious solution. However, if you are intentionally reducing or eliminating caffeine in your diet, you can avoid some withdrawal symptoms by cutting back it slowly. Although many people prefer to quit their bad habits suddenly (the "cold turkey" method of quitting), it is not recommended for caffeine elimination, as quitting caffeine "cold turkey" tends to worsen caffeine withdrawal symptoms substantially. Instead, try cutting back gradually. If coffee is your caffeine vice, cutting back by half a cup per day is a good approach, as is drinking a blend of regular and decaf coffee or gradually switching to decaf. If you drink tea, reduce your intake slowly, try teas with lower caffeine levels or opt for decaf teas. If you drink colas, try getting smaller sizes or slowly scaling back your daily intake.

6 Steps To Prevent Skin Cancer

In observance of May's Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) has provided tips for prevention and early detection. When left untreated, melanoma is the most dangerous and aggressive form of skin cancer, accounting for more than 9,000 of the 12,000-plus skin cancer deaths each year. "While SCCA doctors have developed successful and innovative methods to treat skin cancer, the true fight against melanoma starts with the simple routines each of us do daily to protect our skin," said Dr. Kim Margolin, medical oncologist at SCCA and professor of medical oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. It only takes a few simple changes to a person's regular routine to reduce the chances of developing skin cancer. SCCA's skin cancer experts suggest adopting the following practical, prevention and early detection focused tactics: Limit sun exposure, they said. Skin damage occurs over time and studies have shown that children tend to get 80 percent of their lifetime exposure by age 18. Limit the amount of time you and your children are in the sun, especially between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m, the experts advised. They also suggest using sunscreen. The American Cancer Society recommends daily use of sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30. Reapply sunscreen every few hours while exposed to the sun, regardless of the SPF and be wary of commonly overlooked areas such as the top of hands, ears and scalp, the experts noted. Cases of ocular skin cancer have increased dramatically in recent decades. So, the experts have advised to protect eyes by avoiding excessive exposure to sunlight and wearing sunglasses in bright conditions. Fair skinned and blue-eyed people are especially susceptible to ocular skin cancers, they said. People who use tanning beds at least once a month boost their risk of skin cancer by more than 50 percent, especially for younger users, they noted. They suggest healthy alternatives such as spray tanning and tinted lotions. Get annual screenings, they recommend. Annual check-ups and regular self-exams are the best tools for early detection. Be sure to check your skin regularly, especially if you have a family history of skin cancer. Look for changes in moles and freckles, including asymmetry, uneven boarders, varied color, and growth, they said. Further, they advised to learn family history of skin cancer. Talk with your doctor about your family history of cancer and other diseases. If skin cancer or melanoma runs in your family you could be at greater risk, they stated.

Do you struggle with your dietary decisions and eat too much at night? Well, try a two-week experiment that can help you control these cravings. According to an expert, time-based struggle has something to do, at least in part, with a hunger hormone called 'ghrelin'- which is known to increase in response to fasting and recurrent feeding patterns. Often times people, who are nighttime eaters, keep their daytime calories purposely low and even intentionally skip meals because they will struggle in the later parts of the day. The news has suggested that if the struggles only occur at night, there's a great chance that one can switch them off without the requirement of intense willpower.

Healthy Tips To Prevent Late Night Cravings

The expert believes that breakfast and lunch should include a minimum of 400 food-based calories, inclusive of 25 grams of protein. Night-time eaters are advised to have solid food-based snack between meals with each including at least 7 grams of protein. For the first week of the two-week experiment, it is advisable to have an additional 150-calorie, solid foodbased snack that includes at least 10 grams of protein 30 to 60 minutes before your struggles used to begin. It has also been suggested that if the experiment is a partial success - which means if cravings are down but not gone- try adding 50 solid food-based calories to each meal and snack.

Scientists have revealed that lifelong exposure to genistein, a bioactive component in soy foods, protects against colon cancer by repressing a signal that leads to accelerated growth of cells, polyps, and eventually malignant tumors. "In our study, we report a change in the expression of three genes that control an important signaling pathway," Hong Chen, a University of Illinois professor of food science and human nutrition, said. The cells in the lining of the human gut turn over and are completely replaced weekly, she said. "However, in 90 percent of colon cancer patients, an important growth-

promoting signal is always on, leading to uncontrolled growth and malignancies. Our study suggests that the aberrant Wnt signaling during the development of colon cancer can be regulated by soy-rich diets," she said. "The good news is that a diet rich in soy genistein represses those signals through epigenetic modifications at the regulatory regions of those genes," Yukun Zhang, a doctoral student in Chen's laboratory, said. Chronic exposure to genistein, a soy isoflavone, reduced the number of pre-cancerous lesions in the colons of laboratory rats exposed to a carcinogen by 40 percent and reduced Wnt signaling to normal levels, she said.

Big Breakfasts Far Better Than Big Dinners In Fighting Off The Flab
People who eat their largest daily meal at breakfast time are far more likely to lose weight and have a lesser waist line circumference than those who eat a large dinner, a new study has revealed. The research conducted by Tel Aviv University has found that that proper meal timing can make an important contribution towards managing obesity and promoting an overall healthy lifestyle Participants who ate a larger breakfast - which included a dessert item such as a piece of chocolate cake or a cookie - also had significantly lower levels of insulin, glucose, and triglycerides throughout the day, translating into a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Prof. Daniela Jakubowicz and her fellow researchers conducted a study in which 93 obese women were randomly assigned to one of two isocaloric groups. Each consumed a moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-fat diet totalling 1,400 calories daily for a period of 12 weeks. The first group consumed 700 calories at breakfast, 500 at lunch, and 200 at dinner, while the second group ate a 200 calorie breakfast, 500 calorie lunch, and 700 calorie dinner. The 700 calorie breakfast and dinner included the same foods. By the end of the study, participants in the "big breakfast" group had lost an average of 17.8 pounds each and three inches off their waist line, compared to a 7.3 pound and 1.4 inch loss for participants in the "big dinner" group. According to Prof. Jakubowicz, those in the big breakfast group were found to have significantly lower levels of the hunger-regulating hormone ghrelin, and showed a more significant decrease in insulin, glucose, and triglyceride levels than those in the big dinner group.

Burning incense generates indoor air pollutants that may cause inflammation in human lung cells, a new study has found. Previous studies, some by co-author Karin B. Yeatts, research assistant professor of epidemiology and other University of North Carolina (UNC) colleagues, have associated incense smoke with a number of health problems, including eye, nose, throat and skin irritation; respiratory symptoms, including asthma; headaches; exacerbation of cardiovascular disease; and changes in lung-cell structure. Indoor air pollution is an international health concern. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 1 million people a year die from chronic obstructive respiratory disease (COPD), primarily a result of exposure to pollutants from cook stoves and open hearths. Burning incense releases similar pollutants, including carbon monoxide. In the current study, the authors identified and measured the particles and gases emitted from two kinds of incense typically used in UAE homes. The testing was done over three hours, the typical timeframe during which incense is burned, in a specially designed indoor environmental

Agarbattis Are Hazardous To Health

chamber with a concentration of smoke that might be present in a typical UAE living room. The researchers analyzed both particulate concentrations and levels of gases such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and formaldehyde. Human lung cells were placed in the chamber to expose them to the smoke, then incubated for 24 hours to allow particulates to settle and the cells to respond. The resulting inflammatory response, a hallmark of asthma and other respiratory problems, was similar to that of lung cells exposed to cigarette smoke. Incense is burned weekly in about 94 percent of households in the UAE as a cultural practice to perfume clothing and air and to remove cooking odors. Since people there spend more than 90 percent of their time indoors, researchers said, indoor air pollution has become a source of increasing concern. Adding to the concern is that charcoal briquettes frequently are used to ignite and burn the incense. That adds significantly to potentially harmful levels of carbon monoxide and other pollutants, they said.

Hrithik: Krrish Is Ready To Compete With The Avengers, Iron Man And Superman

Rakesh Roshan says he would have bettered Hollywood films if there wasn't a budget constraint for his upcoming superhero film 'Krrish 3' 'Krrish 3' will take forward the story of the superhero, played by Hrithik Roshan in 'Koi Mil Gaya' and 'Krrish'. The trailer gives a peek into some action sequences that are reminiscent of Hollywood films, where the hero takes on evil forces and mows them down mercilessly. "We cannot compare it exactly to Hollywood films, we don't have that much budget... had I been given that much budget then I would have made a better film than they make. But given in our budget, I feel we have done our best," Roshan said. Though the action looks Hollywood style but the story of 'Krrish 3 is very much Indian. "It's very Indian... I make films for family. I make stories that are Indian oriented with good family values. But where action is concerned we have gone other way, to give the audience a new look," the director said. The filmmaker also said that he would definitely like to take this franchise ahead. "Lets see it depends on how this works but I do have lot of big plans for the brand. I dropped two stories before making 'Krrish 3' so I have to like a story to bring the next movie," he added.

'Done Our Best In 'Krrish 3' Within Budget, Can't Compare With Hollywood'

Actor Hrithik Roshan feels that Hollywood films like 'The Avengers' and 'Iron Man 3' have raised the bar for superhero movies but he is ready to face competition. "When we saw the look of 'The Avengers', 'Iron Man 3', 'Superman'... it was awesome... they had raised the bar... They have taken it to another level. We had to stand up and face competition, " Hrithik told reporters here at the trailer launch of 'Krrish 3'. "Why not compete with them and find out what we can do, " he said. 'Krrish 3' has Hrithik, Priyanka Chopra, Kangna Ranaut and Vivek Oberoi in lead roles. The film boasts of special effects, which director Rakesh Roshan decided to get it done here to encourage and promote local talent. Even as everyone is looking forward to the release, Hrithik wants to keep everything relating to the movie under wraps. "I would not like to talk about my powers... want to keep it a suspense, " he said. In the third installment of this superhero series, Vivek and Kangana

are the new additions. They both play antagonists. "I loved working with the Roshans. . they are genuine, large hearted. I believe if you have a legendary director like Rakesh Roshan then you can play any character convincingly, it is his brilliance... he has created the character, " Vivek said. "The credit goes to writers and Rakesh sir, " he said. It was Hrithik, who wanted to play the evil character played by Vivek but the director was not convinced. "I wanted to play the villian. I think my dad was biased. But thank God I am not playing Vivek's role as after looking at him on screen I feel only he could do this. He has done a phenomenal job, " Hrithik said. Kangana too is happy to play a negative character. "For the first time playing a negative role... I have an unconventional look. I am sexy but wicked. I enjoy being called sexy, " she said. The film is set to release on November 4.

It's Boring To Play A Nice Guy: Naseeruddin Shah Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah says he new to the industry, and Naseeruddin
loves to play the evil guy in films as he feels that characters with a nicer streak can be very boring to portray on screen. In new film "Jackpot", the actor plays an evil character - and he admits that it is "the kind of character I love to do". "I personally love my performances in 'Bombay Boys' and 'Mirch Masala'. It's fun to play such characters. It's very boring to play the nice guy and I only like to play that role in real life," the 63-year-old said on the set of "Jackpot". If I have done 250 films in my career, then 150 have been with new directors and as an actor, I was also new once. So I have no issues working with new actors. Both Sachin and Sunny are professionals and devoted," he said. Naseeruddin is currently also busy wrapping up "Dedh Ishqiya" where he carries forward his character Khalu Jaan from his 2010 hit "Ishqiya", which also saw him in a grey character.

Deepika Padukone's Tamil tinted Hindi dialogues in "Chennai Express" may not have gone down well with some critics but the actress denies that the film caricatures South India in any way Deepika says she is a South Indian herself and would never spoof her own culture. In fact, it took her a while to master the Tamil-Hindi tone in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer movie. Directed by Rohit Shetty, the film releases this Friday. "I don't understand why people are jumping to conclusion without even seeing the film. We all are South Indians, Rohit is a South Indian and I think except for SRK most of the crew was from South. "Why would we spoof our own culture? For years, our films have been based in Punjab but now few films have started setting their stories in South India. I think people are not yet used to it. It is a comedy and larger-than-life film so dialogues are meant to be funny, " Deepika said during a promotional event of "Chennai Express". The film will see Deepika play a Tamil girl who falls in love with a North Indian despite the language barrier. The 27-year-old star said she could identify with her character of a headstrong but traditional girl. "I could identify with my character. I think Indian girls are like that. They have a mind of their own but are close to their families. Even when we are

travelling outside, we don't lose that quality and stand out in the crowd. We have a way of carrying ourselves with lot of dignity and respect. " Fresh from the success of "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", the actress is looking forward to another hit in "Chennai Express" which will see her reunite with Shah Rukh Khan after "Om Shanti Om". She is also working with directors Imtiaz Ali and Homi Adjania again and though she will not confirm, Deepika has reportedly signed Farah Khan's "Happy New Year" opposite SRK. Amid all the work there is little time for the actress to enjoy a break. She recently cut short her holiday to sign a big project but Deepika says she is not complaining. "Every film has its own journey and sometimes you make right and sometimes wrong decisions. It is all part of the learning curve. It has been a wonderful journey for me and I want to enjoy the experience. I am doing good and I have worked really hard to be where I am today, " Deepika said. Her reported link-up with "Ram Leela" Ranveer Singh has been a part of media gossip for sometime but Deepika says she has learnt to tackle the pitfalls of fame. "I don't Google my name. I get too much information about myself anyway. I would want to keep my private life private but I understand where it comes from. People are curious to know such things. "

Priyanka Makes Cops Look Glam In Special 'Zanjeer' Song

Refuting rumours that composer duo Vishal-Shekhar is upset with superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Rohit Shetty said this is not true. The composers have scored music for Shetty-SRK's "Chennai Express", which also has a promotional song by Honey Singh. `Vishal-Shekhar never had any problem with me or Shah Rukh. He was not there at the music launch because he had some prior commitments, ` Shetty told reporters during the promotion of the film here. Get your Woody on! That is as in Woody Allen. Americas favourite neurotic is back for more merry mayhem in Blue Jasmine. Presented by Mongrel Media and Sony Pictures Classics Im happy to say this is one of the famed New Yorkers best picture in years. Come enjoy all the fun at the Park Cineplex Theatre Smart filmgoers know what to get when they encounter a Woody Allen feature. Here the noted director switches gear as our story moves from New York to the streets of San Francisco in a hurry. Woman at the centre of this story is Jasmine, played to perfection by consummate Australian actress Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth). Told through constant flashbacks we see early on that our fearful (?) miss was once upon a time married to Hal. In another stroke of perfect casting handsome Alec Baldwin is sure in his element as the rich businessman from the Big Apple who falls for this dazzling damsel. Ah, how times change. Now Jasmine is off to San Francisco, the fabled city by the sea. After a rather eventful break-up she tries to pick up the pieces and make a new life with the aid of her sister. Talk about a change in lifestyle. Out our the caviar parties and lavish estates and in is a shabby apartment and a new group of people who arent exactly A-listers. For 98 minutes we get to see first hand how squabbling between family member impact each other. You are left with a bittersweet feeling as relationships take all sorts of unexpected twists and turns on the rocky road to love. Superb acting by a stand-out supporting cast including Peter Sarsgaard (Kinsey) reveal how difficult finding true love can be. Complete with a charming jazzy score Blue Jasmine is dazzling, sophisticated adult fun and pure vintage Woody that will click with old and new fans looking for a refreshing romantic comedy that turns out to be a very welcome breath of fresh air. See it with a friend. Costa Rica, last week. Ghent, who divorced Howard in May, hooked up with her ex-husband and took a trip with him and several of his family members to Costa Rica where an argument erupted and Terrence beat her up, as reported. Sources revealed that Howard claimed that Ghent maced him, his adult daughter and another family member.

Another source close to Ghent, however, said that Howard made up the mace story to cover his brutality. Ghent is reportedly is going to court in an attempt to get a restraining order to keep Howard away from her. Earlier, Ghent had accused Howard of slugging her in the face and neck and also claimed that such brutality had started just 7 days after they were married.

2013 marks the introduction of the fifth-generation Altima, which is considered to be the second-best looking in this model's family tree, but still a far cry from that original. Still, this car, like all family sedans, has come a long way since its beginnings. The new car's base four-cylinder engine displaces 2.5 litres, a nominal size increase compared to the original's 2.4, but the new car's motor makes 182 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torquea 32-horsepower bump over the 1993 engine. The 2013's horsepower figure is a small increase over the previous-generation's 175. Buyers seeking more power can opt for a 3.5-litre V6 making 270 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque; those figures are identical to the 2012 models. Significant by its absence in the new Altima line-up is a manual transmission option. All Altimas now use the company's continuously variable transmission (CVT). It's a blow to enthusiastic drivers, but a nod to the realities of this vehicle segment, where few buyers opt to shift for themselves. Altima trim levels begin with the 2.5, priced at $23,698. Next up is the 2.5 S, at $24,898, followed by the $26,998 2.5 SV and $29,598 2.5 SL. Sixcylinder versions begin with the 3.5 SV ($29,698) and top out with the 3.5 SL for $35,598. The coupe returns, but is carried over from 2012. My test car was a 2.5 SV, kitted out with the optional navigation package, which, according to Nissan's website at the time of this writing, added $900 to the price, while the Cayenne Red paint was a $135 extra, for an as-tested MRSP of $29,862, not including freight and taxes.

2013 Nissan Altima

Performance

Nissan says the Altima's CVT has been redesigned for 2013, with reduced internal friction and a wider range of ratios, with a view to reducing fuel consumption. I can't speak to friction, but this transmission has a very tall top ratio that keeps engine speed at barely above 1,000 rpm at city cruising speeds, and well below 2,000 revs at about 100 km/h. You have to be travelling at more than 120 km/h for the engine to spin faster than two grand at a steady cruise. That's good news for those who don't care to hear the engine and, in this car, good news even for those who do, because the Altima's four-cylinder doesn't sound great. I also noticed that at about 2,000 rpm, with the engine under load at cruising speeds (say, climbing a steep hill), the motor generated some

serious vibration that seemed out of place from what is otherwise a very refined drive train. Acceleration and passing power are strong, with my only complaint once again being the engine's unrefined soundtrack. The CVT is, as I've come to expect from Nissan, a smooth piece of engineering. Its ability to keep engine speeds low even while allowing decent acceleration annoying vibrations notwithstandingis impressive, and a notable improvement over the transmission in the previous Altima, which was itself a nice unit. Only six-cylinder Altimas get a manualshift mode; four-cylinder cars make do with a sport transmission program that lets the engine rev higher, and reacts more quickly to throttle inputs. Nissan claims fuel consumption estimates of 7.4 L/100 km in city driving, and 5.0 L/100 km on the highway. Those are pretty optimistic numbers, especially in winter time; indeed, my test car barely broke below 10 L/100 km in a mix of driving that mostly involved city streets. It's one thing to build a feature into a car to appeal to enthusiasts (like a manual transmission), but another to do so with the supposed intent of improving performance in regular driving situations, which rarely test a vehicle's performance limits. At that point, it seems like the engineers were tasked with giving the company's marketers something to talk about, while developing technology that

simply makes the car feel weird to the kind of driver who is likely to notice. Strange steering aside, the Altima has a comfortable but firm ride and maintains its composure over most surfaces. It feels nimble enough, but lacks the twinkle-toes feel of the also-new 2013 Accord. That's a surprising thing, because while both cars are nearly the same size (the Accord is 19 mm wider, the only significant difference), the Accord Sport I tested the week prior is 90 kg heavier than the Altima in SV trim.

(On the upside, it also made it tough to hear the dash creaking.) I wound up controlling the heat manually to keep fan noise at a dull roar.

Functionality/Usability

Ergonomics/Comfort/Quality

Another fact Nissan makes much of is that the Altimas zero-gravity front seats were co-developed by NASA, who says that the least-fatiguing seats are those that best mimic the body's natural posture in a weightless environment. On the quality front, Nissan has designed a nice interior into this car, one that I consider the equal, in terms of look and feel, of that in the new Accord and the Toyota Camry that was introduced for 2012. Assembly quality let the Altima down, however, with a noisy dash that creaked over rough roads, and one piece (the plastic bezel around the instruments, I think) that vibrated in sympathy with the engine at the 2,000-rpm sweet spot I mentioned higher up. Rear-seat passengers are treated well, with bottom cushions even softer than the fronts. The Altima's sunroof, standard in the 2.5 SV and up, takes a chunk of headroom from both front and rear seat occupants, but it's especially noticeable in the back. Legroom is good, but toe-room under the front seats is tight, particularly for those wearing chunky winter footwear. My test car had the black interior colour option; it's the more practical choice, as the other is a two-tone scheme that would get dirty quickly during its first typical Canadian winter. I always appreciate automatic climate control, but I like it even more when it works unobtrusively. That wasn't the case here: in the Altima, it took a long time for the cabin to come up to temperature, even on milder winter days, meaning the fan would blast constantly, drowning out the radio and making casual conversation difficult.

Nissan's navigation system is a nice one, with great graphics and an easyto-use interface. That's expected now, as factory GPS units continue to drop in price, while (generally) improving in quality. The bit of tech I found really smart is Nissan's new easy fill tire pressure monitoring system, which signals when a tire is at the right pressure (when being filled or deflated) with a beep of the horn. It's a great idea, even if it doesn't fix the fact that many drivers are oblivious to the need to regularly check tire pressures in the first place. The Altima's trunk is nominally smaller than the new Accord's (436 litres, versus 447), and the rear suspension intrudes more prominently into the space. It bests the Accord, however, with a split folding rear seat (the Accord's is a single-piece) and a more usefully-shaped opening into the passenger cabin. To once again echo Jil McIntosh's review of this car, the driver's side windshield wiper stops well short of the left-side A-pillar, creating a second pillar of snow and slush (or rain water, or dirt, once it dries) that obscures the view in left-hand turns. Oversights like this shouldn't happen in modern cars; driver visibility is kindergarten stuff in terms of automotive engineering, and should be prioritized over many other aspects of a vehicle's design.

Conclusion

This midsize Nissan continues to be a car I really want to love, but I still can't find affection for the latest design that I still feel for the original (though, truthfully, this 2013 is a much better car in many ways than the one that debuted 20 years ago). It drives well, looks okay and gets decent fuel economy, but simply doesn't tickle me the way other cars in this class do. The Accord is more entertaining; the Camry is more refined; the Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata, as always, are at least 90 per cent as good as any other car in this class, but sell for more attractive prices. The fifth-generation Altima is a small step forward for the nameplate, but not the giant leap I'd hoped it would be.

Natural Ways To Fight Gas

Most of us are still embarrassed by loud and funky-smelling gas that comes out of our bodies, but burping, belching and breaking wind at least 20 times a day is considered average. Excessive gas is not only uncomfortable - especially if, let's say, you're sitting in a room full of people all day - but it can also be a major health concern. All that extra tooting can be the result of irritable bowel syndrome or constipation, but it can also be caused by the foods you eat or the air you swallow. Lack of proper digestion of some foods can cause gas. If you have beans and they haven't been soaked properly or you're eating too much too soon, your stomach ends up bloating and you start to gas. Now, before you run and call the doctor, gas itself is easily preventable. Gas is not necessarily harmful, unlike constipation. However, it can be unpleasant and is a sign that foods are not being broken down properly. Soaking or sprouting your favourite foods to improve digestibility and reduce overall gas. Chew your food well. The more you chew, the less work your digestive system has to do to break down your food. This is especially true for carbohydrates, as they begin digestion in the mouth. Is your stomach grumbling? Here are some foods that prevent excessive gas - and others to avoid altogether: Ginger If you're having a hard time digesting your foods, it is recommended eating peppermint leaves raw or adding them into a tea. Cinnamon Some cultures eat fennel seeds after eating a large meal to reduce inflammation of one's stomach and intestines and ensure proper absorption of nutrients. Flaxseed taste great -- but they also confuse our bodies. If you have gas, avoid carbs that have chemicals or harsh ingredients that don't always get recognized by your digestive system.

Cinnamon can help metabolize fats in the digestive process, allowing your body to refrain from excessive gas. Water Flaxseeds not only prevents excessive gas, but they can also help fight constipation. Grounded flaxseeds in smoothies, dressings and yogurts are simple ways to add them to your everyday meals. Cabbage Just think about your toilet -- your body also needs a flushing and water is the way to do it. Green Juices Some people may be sensitive to lactose products, if you are, avoid any milks, cheeses or yogurts if you're suffering from excessive gas. Avoid Onions

Avoid Dairy

Hmm, we know what you're thinking. But as it turns out, foods that usually cause gas also can help you reduce it. Avoid Beans Fresh green juices made with kale, spinach, cucumber, collards or spirulina for example, can all help alkalinize the body and reduces gas. Pineapple

Ginger can help with an upset stomach and clam down your digestive system. Raw Honey

Beans can lead to gas if consumed in excess or too much too soon. Soaking your beans helps to improve digestibility. Avoid Cruciferous Vegetables Pineapple is a natural way for your body to break down food making it easier to digest. Fennel

Don't cry about this one. Onions and garlic, even though they are good for you, are high in sulfur that can cause gas. Fizzy Drinks

Known as being a popular home remedy, a spoon of raw honey can prevent excessive gas. Peppermint

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts should always be cooked before consumption to avoid gas. Avoid Processed Carbs Sure cupcakes, muffins and bagels

The fizzy gas inside your cup should give it away -- refined sugar is also hard for our digestive system to recognize (or even find) any nutrients.

Healthy Skin Ideas

Continued From Last Week Snapper with Bell Pepper Salsa Feel free to tinker with this mildly spicy salsa. Substitute cilantro or fresh basil for the parsley, or any color sweet bell pepper for the red. Divide salsa evenly among four serving plates; top with snapper, skin side down. Garnish with lime wedges. Per serving: 280 calories; 30 g protein; 14 g fat; 10 g carb; 5 g fiber. Carrot-Mango Smoothie Scientists believe the selenium mineral plays a role in skin-cancer prevention. Taken in a supplement form or cream, it protects the skin from sun damage. Dietary sources include whole-grain cereals, seafood, garlic, and eggs. Hearty Garlic Greens The skin-friendly mineral zinc -- found in poultry, oysters, and lean meat -- tames the oil production that often results in acne. Basic Healthy Granola

Frozen mango lends the smoothie its sweetness and smooth texture while adding vitamins B6, C, and E. Pair the smoothie with a hard-boiled egg or a handful of nuts for protein, and you've got a balanced meal to go. Peach Crisp Ingredients 2 Medium Red Bell Peppers, Ribs And Seeds Removed, Chopped 1 Small Ripe Avocado, Halved, Pitted, Peeled, And Diced 1 Jalapeno Pepper (Ribs And Seeds Removed For Less Heat, If Desired), Minced 1/2 Small Red Onion, Finely Chopped (1/4 Cup) 2 Tablespoons Fresh Lime Juice (From 1 Lime), Plus Lime Wedges For Serving 1/4 Cup Fresh Parsley Leaves, Chopped 1 Tablespoon Plus 1 Teaspoon Olive Oil Coarse Salt And Ground Pepper 4 Skin-On Red Snapper Fillets (About 5 Ounces Each) Directions To make the salsa, combine bell pepper, avocado, jalapeno, onion, lime juice, parsley, and 1 teaspoon oil in a medium bowl; season with salt and pepper and set aside. In a large nonstick skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon oil over mediumhigh. Place snapper, skin side down, in skillet; season with salt and pepper. Cook until skin is golden, 3 to 4 minutes. Turn over and cook until opaque throughout, 1 to 2 minutes more.

Boston-based chef Jody Adams's hearty autumn greens include beta carotene and vitamin C-packed Swiss chard, Tuscan kale, and mustard greens, but any combination of autumn greens will work just as well. Ginger Shrimp with Charred Tomato Relish

Although some commercial granolas are healthy, many are full of refined sugar and trans fats, making for lessthan-nutritious eating. But it's easy to make your own healthy version with whole-grain oats, natural sweeteners, and ingredients such as dried cherries and papayas. Chickpea, Tomato, and Spelt Soup

Juicy, ripe peaches star in this easyto-make dessert, but you can also substitute other stone fruits like nectarines or plums -- or even combine several. To make mealtime preparation easier, consider preparing this crisp in advance and then keeping it at room temperature for a few hours. Just before serving, reheat it in a warm oven. Mexican Potato Omlette

Green tomatoes are simply unripe red tomatoes -- hence their lower sugar content and slightly sour taste. Charring makes them softer and easier to peel. Roasted Chicken with Chestnuts Spelt is an ancient whole grain native to southern Europe. It's packed with fiber and naturally higher in protein than wheat. For a more intense flavor, use a mild smoked paprika instead of a sweet one. Topping off the soup with parsley adds an earthy tone and aids in digestion.

By Graham Venkataya (Unedited) Raymond Kapoor of Surrey, BC has risen to golf levels experienced by very few Fijian golfers in the Vancouver region. His recent success in the Vancouver Golf Tour 2013 season started when Raymond began taking golf seriously in 2009. He joined BC Sangam Club in 2010 with a 15 handicap & later joined Players Golf Association where he played & competed with fellow Fijian golfers. Raymond is presently a member of the South Pacific Golf Association (SPGA) playing championship golf. Raymond, with the advice of fellow top golfer Raj Singh, joined the Vancouver Golf Tour (VGT) to take his game to another level. In his first (VGT) tournament at Northview Golf & Country Club in June, Raymond quickly got noticed for his game. His game took a step forward as he competed at the VGT Open at Fraserview Golf Course and at the 2013 Saputo Vancouver Open. Raymond finished in 7th place. A great accomplishment for a Fijian golfer who took up the game seriously in 2009. But that's not all, in the very next tournament at the Golden Ear's Invitational in July, here's what transpired. In the overall Low Net side of the tournament, it was VGT and SPGA member Raymond Kapoor who took down the title after a 3-hole playoff with Pitt Meadows member Terry Oiom. Both players finished the tournament at 137 net (-7) for the event. Kapoor took home a set of Taylor Made Rocket Balls Irons for his victory! This victory was no fluke as Raymond

only knows the amount of hard work he has put into his game & it started to show huge dividends. If that wasn't enough, Raymond made history in last week's VGT Hazelmere Classic BMW Golf Cup International at the Hazelmere Golf Course, Surrey. At the end of the day it was the DYNAMIC DUO of Raymond Kapoor and Randy Parnell who sealed their victory with an amazing BEST NET SCORE of 59 (-13). Both players had an amazing day of golf and as they would attest to later We ham n egged it almost perfectly. The exciting part about their win was an invitation to the BMW Golf Cup International Canadian Finals scheduled for Sept.8-11th up at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. You are welcomed to come & watch Raymond play the BMW Golf Cup International Canadian Finals in Whistler from September 8 to 11th & it will be a huge emotional lift for our Fijian community to support one of their own local golfer. Raymond has also been an important team member for the Canadian side that has played numerous Ryder Cup & CanAm Cup matches against teams from the USA in his successful golf career. Raymond said that his accomplishments were possible only because many local Fijian golfers have given him tips, advice & encouragement to help improve his game. He would like to name & thank Ganesh Murti & Ganesh Rao of BC Sangam, Peter Jones & Raj Singh of SPGA, Sarwan Kumar (Roger), Ajay Prasad, Graham Venkataya & many others who have helped his succeed.

Two more soccer players are expected to be expelled soon for residing illegally, Director of Immigration Fiji Nemani Vuniwaqa confirms. Vuniwaqa said Suva target Henry Uche and Navua new signing Anthony Ali do not have proper papers to reside and work in Fiji. They have been living in Fiji illegally since February," Vuniwaqa said. Before they can be granted work permit, the associations that are interested in employing them will need to first apply to have their prohibited immigrants status uplifted. This is the same case as Sanni Issa. Vuniwaqa reiterates to districts that

Top Referees Selected For Bog R1

11 referees have been selected for the first round of the Battle Of Giants tournament in Labasa this weekend following a fitness test which was held at three venues last week. Fiji Football Association Referees Director Paresh Kishore said the results were pleasing and referees will be in the best shape to control the matches. I am pleased with the result of the fitness test and my referees are all fit to control the matches in the tournament. The best eleven referees have been selected for the tournament and their performance from the first round will determine their appointment for matches in Ba, Kishore said. Kishore also revealed that he had written letters to districts to meet for a workshop on the changes in the rules and he was saddened with the response he got from the districts. Only Ba and Lautoka gave me the positive response and I have not heard anything from the rest of the districts. There was lot of criticism made in the last tournament on the decisions made by my referees. But we have not lost hope and we will try to get the districts together for the next tournament, he added. only players who have their work permits will be allowed to play on Saturday. We will have our officers at the ground on Saturday to ensure the players have their work permits on them before they can go onto the field. In the meantime, Vuniwaqa has instructed permit officers to process applications as they come to hand. We are still receiving applications. We do not have any timeframe of when all will be ready. Uche and Ali were among 12 foreign players earmarked to participate at the BOG which starts this Saturday in Labasa.

Canucks Lock Up First-Round Picks Bo Horvat, Hunter Shinkaruk

The Vancouver Canucks signed their top 2013 draft picks Bo Horvat and Hunter Shinkaruk to NHL entry-level contracts Monday. Horvat, an 18-year-old Rodney, Ont., native, was selected ninth overall after the Canucks traded goaltender Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils for the pick. The Knights captain also led the league in playoff scoring with 16 goals and seven assists. Horvat, a six-foot, 206-pound centre, has also represented Canada at the 2012 under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament and captained Team Ontario at the 2012 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge. Shinkaruk, an 18-year-old Calgary native, captained the Medicine Hat Tigers in 2012-13, recording 49 goals and 37 assists. The 5-10, 181-pound centre led the Tigers in playoff scoring with three goals and three assists. Internationally, Shinkaruk was a member of the Canadian team that won a bronze medal at the 2012 under-18 world championships. He earned gold with Canadas entry at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka. The Canucks also announced that they have signed left-winger Darren Archibald. The 23-year-old Newmarket, Ont., native split last season between the AHLs Chicago Wolves and ECHLs Kalamazoo Wings. In Chicago, he produced 12 goals and 10 assists and 47 penalty minutes in 55 games played. He also recorded six goals, seven assists and 29 penalty minutes in 18 games with Kalamazoo.

Suva duo Abdul Mosheem and Praneel Kumar have been cleared to feature for the Crown Timber sponsored Navua side at the Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants which starts this weekend. The duos release was disputed by Suva Football Association but Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) chief executive officer Bob Kumar confirmed that both Navua FA and Suva FA have now reached an agreement. Both players are now eligible to feature for Navua at the INKK Mobile Battle of the Giants. Suva and Navua have reached some sort of agreement, Kumar said. Mosheem and Kumar featured prominently for the Suva side during the Fiji Sun GP Batteries National Football and the recent Vodafone Fiji FACT. Kumar will reunite with the Navua side after joining Suva earlier this season. Navua has finally submitted their 22-member squad for the Inkk Mobile BOG. Notable exclusion from the squad is Nigerian Ali Anthoney who Navua had eyed from Lautoka. Navua kicks off their campaign this

Tailevu North Seek Re-Entry

The Tailevu North Football Association (TNFA) has applied for a re-entry as a full Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) affiliated member in the 2013/2014 season. Interim president, Hirday Lakhan says they have now fulfilled the condition set by Fiji FA which demoted TNFA to an associate member at the end of the 2012 season. The requirements for TNFA were as follows; register players, registers clubs, get regular football activities in the district, audit the financial report and conduct the annual general meeting for the financial year 2012. To date Tailevu North has registered 375 players with more to come in the transfer window. TNFA now has seven clubs affiliated to our association with six participating in the regular league. A new club is in the process of joining Tailevu North and this will make a total of eight affiliated teams that will take us into the next soccer season, Lakhan said. Our interim board has successfully concluded two knock out tournaments and has completed the first round of the Local League competition for this current season. The second round of the Local League is scheduled to complete this month. The AGM for the 2012 season has been held and the audited accounts presented and passed. We now have a properly elected board made up of strong character and talented members. TNFA has applied for re-entry as a full affiliated Fiji FA member. We have provided all the necessary reports and we are hopeful Fiji FA will consider our request, he added. TNFA was relegated as an associate member in 2012, Fiji FA stated that the use of unregistered players, clubs and lack of football activities in the district were some of the reasons the national football body had to intervene. Fiji FA vice president Yogeshwar Singh was tasked to look into the matter. He abolished the TNFA board and appointed an interim committee which was given two-months to set things right. Unable to complete the task on time, TNFA failed to regain its place as an active member but the interim board was determined to work towards full affiliation. The interim Board generated a lot of interest and activities however were not able to complete all the tasks given to address during the two month period. Despite not achieving the entire task at the time, the football activities did blossom back in the district. The interim Board had invested a lot of time regaining the confidence of the players and the community, Lakhan said. TNFA has successfully conducted the long pending AGM for 2012 and have an elected an board now that runs all the administrations affairs of the association. The one season served as a relegated member has not been of a good feeling neither an easy one for our district. We however realize and concede the shortfalls that our association had and thank Fiji Football Association for highlighting and helping us tidy the shortfalls. We are now operating all football activities as that done by normal district associations. We have also set a strong platform for the new season and are confident of our talents on the field, Lakhan concluded. Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel has confirmed that the request will be presented at the next board and council meeting before a decision is made. Levuka and Nalawa associations have also been relegated by Fiji FA.
