What Are Volcanoes?

BasicPlanet.com

Volcanoes generally occur right at the edge of tectonic plates. These plates are actually massive slabs of rock that comprise Earths surface. The volcano is where the earths crust gets broken and magma is able to ow through to up to surface and become lava.

A popular way of classifying magmatic volcanoes is by their frequency of eruption: Active Volcanoes - These are when a volcano is at its most dangerous. Dormant Volcano - This is where there has been an eruption in our history as far back as weve recorded but its been quiet for some time. Extinct Volcanoes - This is where the volcano has not erupted in history so far as weve recorded and evidence suggests that it wont.
