Harvard professor Putnam brings attention to the plight of Port Clinton and the country
BY DONNA LUEKE On July 10 Port Clinton High graduate (class of 1959, member of the Port Clinton Academic Hall of Fame, sociologist, Harvard professor and author Robert Putnam was awarded the National Medal of Honor at ceremonies in Washington, DC. Among his fellow honorees were filmmaker George Lucas and Sports writer Frank DeFord. On August 3 Putnams article entitled Crumbling American Dreams appeared in the New York Times Opinionator. The article has gone viral, especially in Ottawa County, and is spurring a national debate on issues of substance. Using the example of Port Clinton, Putnam details the decline of a sense of community and its results. His landmark book Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, written in 2001 and featuring Port Clintons Star Lanes, began the discussion that is continued in the Aug. 3 article. Just as in the election of 2012, residents of Port Clinton and Ottawa County find themselves at the center of a national debate. The community has been presented an opportunity to use this visibility to be a part of the complex discussion and innovative changes that will be required. Dont Give up the Ship flags that are flying around the area in honor of the bicentennial of Perrys Victory in the War of 1812 speak to the spirit of resilience and motivation that can help right the ship of the city, state and nation. Putnams article is available at http://opinionator.blogs. nytimes.com/2013/08/03/crumbling-american-dreams.

Tell Tales
Port Clinton. There have been many individuals who have come to Port Clinton seeking opportunity, entrepreneurs, developers and the like. They have made their fortune by working hard and responding to the changes in the marketplace that Putnam described. We have written about job skills deficit in The Beacon, but the incentive to work or to get training in the new local job market appears lacking in our community. Yes, very sad. I will be interested to learn what Mr. Rose has to say tonight. How about we take the park aspects of Waterworks Park and move them to the block now empty since the demolition of the old Middle School? Develop the
n
waterfront, centralize the park. Keep the access to the waterfront for local residents.

Thank you from the Mackey family
The family of Jacob H. Mackey wishes to thank Catawba Island EMS, Magruder Hospital Staff, Dr. Carl Steele, Neidecker, Leveck and Crosser Funeral Home and Port Clinton Elks Lodge 1718 for their help in our time of need. We also thank all who sent cards, flowers, prayers, food and kind words. God bless! Carolyn Mackey and family is going to come here as long as there are those who work to turn them away. It is again time for City Council and the Mayor to move forward and show our town that we need growth and there are ways to protect the waterfront for those who enjoy it. We need jobs and the businesses downtown need shoppers. Look at what Huron River Basin has done. Even a boardwalk and a marina would be a start. But lets do something! I hope the marshlands get a new look and have been assured that this is going to happen. Dont forget, citizens, we turned away a 3M dollar improvement to Waterworks Park by our own Jet Express for new trees, ball fields, park equipment, etc., so that they could lease our Waterworks building and the city turned them away and they moved. Lets learn from the past and get involved with new development. It may be our last chance. Sincerely, Dr. Thomas M. Brown, Former Mayor of Port Clinton
Waterworks Park
Have you notice the Save the Park signs throughout town? Well, it is another attempt to prevent economic growth on the waterfront. Will Port Clinton make the same mistake twice? What was wrong with a 1,000 new jobs at $25 to $40 an hour, a new transient marina and a water park for our young people? We are mowing grass at Waterworks Park at $4000 a square foot. Is this the way we develop the downtown and the waterfront? I think not. No developer

OCDJFS supports PC Kiwanis assists library book sale thousands of children with Child Support division
The Child Support division of the Ottawa County Department of Job and Family Services has a caseload of 2,473 and in 2012 collected $6,655,776 in child support payments. Ohio bases its child support program on the fundamental belief that children deserve financial support. If children truly are our future, then it is imperative that the child support program aid in the healthy development of children, requiring the emotional and financial support of both parents. Aside from public education, the child support program touches the lives of more children and families than any other public program. In fact, the program affects over one million children. The child support program ensures parents financially support their children when they are living apart. The program provides many important services, which include collecting child support for families, establishing the legal relationship between children and their parents, enforcing court orders and health insurance coverage. Ohio establishes paternity for more than 56,700 children born to unmarried parents each year. The state also has the third largest caseload in the nation, with nearly one million cases, and collects more than $2 billion dollars per year on average. Child support is the second largest source of income for single parent families, making up 39 percent of their total income. Employers collect nearly $1.4 Billion in child support payments each year.
On the last day of the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale, Kiwanis members and volunteers sorted, boxed, and loaded unsold books into two trucks to be moved to Goodwill. Standing: Dick Patterson, Dick Sneary, George Wilber and Russ
Brown. In the truck: Jeff Smith, Bob St.Clair, Kathy Jo Schweitzer and Dick Highfield. This is a community service performed annually by the Kiwanis Club of Port Clinton.

BY JASMINE CUPP Since the early 1970s the Camp Perry Shooting Club has been a place shooters could go to practice trap and skeet shooting. Young or old, male or female, everyone is welcome at the Camp Perry Shooting Club. Dont be intimidated, says John Bowers, manager of the shooting club. We welcome all levels of skill here and are more than happy to help anyone out with what they would need. Everyone has to start somewhere. At the club, which is located on the grounds of Camp Perry just west of Port Clinton, the first left after entering the gates, there are 8 shooting stations for skeet and 25 skeet per round. Ammunition is available to buy at the club, but shooters are encouraged to bring their own due to shortages nationwide. Also available at the
club is coffee and conversation. Bowers said that not only is shooting a confidence building sport, but it is also a way to meet people with the same interests. Terry Schuetz, Karen Anders, Tom Martin, and Bob Geiner were shooting a round on Thursday. Shuetz, Martin, and Geiner all agreed that Karen Anders is the one to beat. They said that she always beats them all, but they keep coming back as the laughs and the camaraderie seem to be worth the beating Karen gives them. Bowers welcomes everyone to come out to the Camp Perry Shooting Club to shoot, grab a cup of coffee, or to shoot the breeze. Get granddads old shot-gun out here and give it a try. For more information, call 419-635-2682.

The Port Clinton Community Band gave a concert last Sunday afternoon before an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd at Port Clinton Yacht Club. The group will again be performing again this Monday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m. at Lakeview Park. I told director Rod Miller that he was my second favorite local sousaphone player right behind Jon Waters, director of bands at THE Ohio State University. He reminded me that he has one more i-dotting than does the Elmore native. Anyway, bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy the free concert. In case of bad weather, the concert will be moved to the PCHS Performing Arts Center.

Touchable Creations and more at this years Appetite for the Arts
Look, dont touch! doesnt apply to the work of Dani Herrera, one of the artists participating in the 2013 Appetite for the Arts, Aug. 16-18 at the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport. Herrera creates art from random scraps and other things she finds, such as buttons, zippers, dryer lint, newspaper and recycled materials. I encourage people to touch it. I want them to feel what its made out of, said the homegrown Toledo artist. I use pretty much anything I can get my hands on to create eye catching pieces of art that will make you look twice, she said. Her art features pop culture icons, historic figures, portraits, still lifes and more. Since the self-taught artists debut in 2011, shes had gallery showings in New York and Chicago and has won awards. She will be sharing a booth with her artist husband, Jose Herrera, who uses polymer clay and found materials to create fantastic creepy-looking creatures. In addition to the Herreras, Appetite for the Arts will feature a variety of artists who work in painting, jewelry, glass, woodworking, fabric, hand-thrown pottery, mixed media, steel and other art forms. In addition to appetizing art available for purchase, visitors will have an opportunity to sample food and drink and listen to music by local entertainers including the Womack Family Band, the Naked Bacon Band, Bob Lawitzke and Steve Hall. Children of all ages will enjoy making their own flight-themed art using recycled materials. No tickets are needed for Saturday and Sunday the event is free. Tickets are still available for the Friday night gala, a Red Carpet Affair, with a preview of artists works, classic and collector cars and music by the Womack Family Band. Patrons can sample culinary delights provided by The Cakerys Bakery, Cheesehaven, Ciao Bella, Nagoya, Catawba Island Club, Rosies/1812 Food & Spirits, Catawba Island Brewery, Firelands Wine, Mon Ami Winery, Wendy Kromer Confections, McCarthys Pub. Mon Ami, Phils, Papa Jimmies, Bootleggers Waterfront Grille and Bar, Red Gables, Tre Sorrelle, Waldo Peppers and Bassetts Tickets are $35 and are available online through www.PortClintonArts.org, and locally at Marys Blossom Shoppe, Bassetts, and Real Living Morgan Realty Group. Sundays Fly In/Drive In Pancake Breakfast will offer opportunities for youth to fly in an airplane. For more information about this years Appetite for the Arts (sponsored in part by Lake Erie Shores & Islands), check the website www.PortClintonArts.org. The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council started with a grant from the Ohio Arts Council and has blossomed into an organization that serves and inspires artists and patrons, both big and small.
