New Features
The following new features are available in this release.

Simulation
1. Steam Turbine Component The steam turbine model is a versatile component that can be used to model an entire turbine as a single component or can model each stage of the turbine individually. It also has a specialized shaft component (controller) that is used for load and power calculations when connecting several components together in series. 2. Simple Boiler/Steam Generator This component simply converts all incoming water to steam. The component does not allow mass accumulation nor does it allow for the partial conversion to steam. It currently also only allows for superheated steam and not wet steam. 3. Power Plant Boiler This is a group of components that can be configured in several different ways to construct a power generation boiler depending on the design being used. Waterwall - a bundle of vertical pipes where the boiling actually occurs Steam drum - a tank that has a mixture of water and steam that releases the steam to the superheaters and then sends the water back through the downcomer to be reheated again. Downcomer a large tube or tubes that are used to recirculate the water that leaves the steam drum back to the waterwall manifold for reheating. Superheater Heat exchanger that is specifically designed for adding super heat to the steam before it goes to the steam turbine. Economiser a heat exchanger that is used to preheat water before it is sent to the waterwall.

Reheater a secondary super heater that reheats the steam after it leaves the high pressure turbine and before it goes to the low pressure turbine. Flue/furnace - is a simple pipe component that allows the complex heat transfer to occur between the flue gas and the waterwall component. It is segmented similarly to the waterwall component so the heat transfer segments of each are properly aligned.

4. Two-phase Pipe Two new pipe models have been introduced (one component). These are the homogenous approach which is a simplified pressure drop model and the separated mixture model that provides the user with several options for pressure drop and heat transfer correlations. The separated mixture model is the most robust but neither of these models will model true transient steam hammer phenomenon at the initial release. Homogeneous Separated Mixture o Pressure Drop Model/Correlations Friedel Correlation Lockhart and Martinelli Correlation Chisholm Correlation Mller-Steinhagen and Heck Correlation

o Heat Transfer Model/Correlations Shah Correlation Gungor-Winterton Correlation

5. Cooling Tower Components Cooling towers are used to reduce the water temperature after it has been condensed. These come in several different configurations and V7.9 has representative models of each. Each of the components uses a slightly different approach as described below: Wet Cooling Tower - uses the Merkel Equation as the correlation for developing the component. This approach is the commonly accepted approach used by nearly everyone in the industry Dry Cooling Towers - are simply large heat exchangers with air passing through them as the cooling medium. They can be either passive or forced air. Hybrid Cooling Tower - Hybrid Cooling Tower is basically a Wet Cooling Tower using Detailed Method for evaluating water outlet temperature and air outlet temperature)

6. Steam Trap Components

2 Flowmaster V7 Release Highlights, FM7.9.0 June 2012

Steam traps are a type of check valve that capture and release condensate from the steam system without the loss of steam. There are several types of these available and V7.9.0 has representative models for each. This project delivers four new physical components: Ball Float Mechanical traps Inverted Bucket Mechanical trap Thermostatic traps Thermodynamic (TD) traps

7. Flash Tank Component The flash tank is a special component that is designed to convert (flash) high pressure/ high temperature water into low pressure steam and lower temperature condensate (water). In Flowmaster V7.9.0 it is a new 3 arm component that accepts geometric input and well known flash correlations. One arm accepts water in and outputs steam and condensate from the other two arms. 8. CW Condenser The existing condenser component has been refactored to take advantage of V7 technology and to make it more user friendly. It also includes enhancements to the component to match current practical usage. 9. Power Plant Condenser This component models the condensation of the steam downstream from the steam turbines. It has the capability of also tracking any uncondensed steam that leaves the condenser through the educator. 10. Solver License At V7.9.0 a new Solver License has been introduced. The Solver License allows Flowmaster to operate without a GUI and provides for the automated running of a prebuilt system including use of COM and .NET. 11. Zero Flow Heat Transfer V7.9.0 sees the addition of Zero Flow HT which allows heat transfer analysis in flow conditions below Flowmasters minimum flow threshold of 10-6 kg/s. Zero Flow HT enables heat transfer and the resulting system temperature rise to be predicted whilst automatically recognising and transitioning from a zero flow to a normal flow regime and vice versa. 12. Advanced Heat Exchanger Improvements The ADV HX improvements for V7.9.0 are an incremental update, and include a partial refactoring of the ADV HX code, and a small number of bug fixes. The bug fixes correct the implementation of existing models (correlations) and primarily relate to improving the prediction of Pressure Drop and Heat Duty for single phase, cross-flow,

compact heat exchangers. 13. Priming Enhancements The existing dry side priming capability for single phase, open branch networks has been significantly extended to include an additional 20 components. A summary of these additional priming enabled components is listed as follows, which have been specifically selected to help provide automotive engineers with the capability to model most of the items commonly found within an engine lubrication system: Valves: Simple Check and Pressure Relief Bearings Passages: Annular & Rotating Pump: all Positive Displacement types Pipes: all geometries (except Hexagonal) Hose: Flexible Thermal Bridge

14. Rigorous Energy Balance Solver Two-Phase Building on the Rigorous Energy Balance Solver and Fluid Property Enhancements delivered as part of V7.8.0, V7.9.0 introduces a two-phase simulation capability and a new circuit type that will address two-phase flow. This represents the initial release of this product and is focused on the type of power generation that utilise steam as the working fluid of their systems. This includes Nuclear, Fossil Fuel, combined cycle, geothermal and some solar applications. The initial release has only been validated for water/steam but can be expanded to cover any liquid/gas flow of a single constituent such as water, nitrogen, refrigerants or other fluids. 15. Flashing Enhancements Several components have been enhanced to work with the new solver to allow the modelling of flashing. Flashing can occur in any component where there is an area change. Therefore, this includes all valves, Orifices and transitions. It can also occur if two pipes of different diameters are connected directly together. NOTE: Junctions have not been enhanced due to the limited loss data available 16. Desuperheating Desuperheating is where water is added to a steam distribution system to reduce the superheat before it is sent to a service. The water is instantly vaporised and the mass is added to the system while reducing the temperature of the steam downstream.

17. Transient Since this release will include only the homogeneous and separated fluids pipe models the transient capabilities will be limited. V7.9 two-phase is fully transient from a thermodynamic perspective but is pseudo-transient from a fluid dynamic point of view. This means that it is able to model fluid thermal capacity/inertia and thermal inertia of the pipe and insulation but does not model the model and mass inertia. Note: Steam hammer is not modelled

Data Management & Collaboration

1. Automation: Component Creation At V7.9.0 additional automation functions have been added to the Flowmaster public interfaces that allow the automated creation of customized components within a Flowmaster database. When used in conjunction with existing automation functions it allows a user to create tools to create new components. The enhancements include; Allowing the user to rename a custom component Set the default values or data items of component features so they are set when a component is added to a network schematic Test to find the default value of a feature Define whether a default should automatically be set when a component is added to a network schematic

2. Links: Flowmaster Link for Simulink As part of the V7.9.0 enhancements the Flowmaster Link for Simulink (FML4SL) user interface has been rewritten in C#. This rewrite allows use of the .NET framework as well as providing better communication between the main Flowmaster V7 code and the FML4SL. Further enhancements include The user interface has been redesigned to improve user workflow. Reduced time needed to initialize the model Oracle Database Support Improved Error Messaging Solver License Support Upgrade to Level 2 S-Function

3. OS Support: Win 7 64 bit At V7.9.0 Flowmaster V7 will support Windows 7 64 bit.

Additional Release Notes and Workarounds

This section contains additional release notes and workarounds for issues found late in the release process for this software release. For a detailed list of all other release notes and any workarounds for this release, refer to your product specific release notes manual or README file, available in the installed software tree or on SupportNet. Work Item 21366 ZFHT Pipe abnormal when flow starts after being zero This bug occurs only when modelling Zero Flow Heat Transfer (ZFTH) in pipes when the flow is initially zero and then becomes finite. Under these conditions, Flowmaster should revert to the normal heat transfer model, but does not. Please contact support to discuss a work around to this bug, or if you need an urgent Engineering patch.
