The

Evangelist
Gary Garv and Kathy Kathv Meyers

Dear Friends,

We greet you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. How wonderful and gracious are the blessings of the Lord. What we have looked forward to and have prayed for is now actually coming to pass. Plans and preparations are progressing well as we get ready to go to Brazil. JBABY IN MAY .. . God has further blessed us as we look forward to having our first child. The doctor says that the baby is scheduled to arrive about the middle of May. Kathy is staying in Iowa and will be there .when the baby is born. Which will it be, a boy or a girl? Well, we did not specify in our order and the doctor has not told us yet, so we do. not know. We are only very thankful for the blessing and pray that we may be good Christian parents.

GOING TO BELEM ... If the Lord be willing, we planj^leave for Brazil the
middle of October. We will be going to the city of Belem (pronounced Bay-ling). Belem
is located at the mouth of the Amazon river on the south bank. It is a city of about 500,000 people. There are already several churches established there and several missionaries are working in the city. We will be working closely with the David

Bayless family. We plan to be in Brazil about two years for our first term. During this time we will be concentrating on learning Portuguese and becoming acquainted with the people and the culture. Even though we will not know the language of the
people, we wiU begin working right away in the program to evangelize the area. We will probably be working with expanding the outreach of the Gospel through the radio

and also be helping in the new print shop which is being set up. We are both very anxious to get to Brazil and to be a part of the work there.
BEFORE WE GO . .. While we are preparing to go, we are traveling about

presenting the challenge to Christians of proclaiming the gospel. We are doing this through preaching and through the presentation of slides of Brazil. We are also engaging in direct evangelistic work. This is a step that has been taken after much prayerful consideration and consultation with our sponsoring elders of the Park Church of Christ, Goldfield, Iowa. We are participating in all types of evangelistic meetings, both in preaching and in music. We are especially concentrating, though, on short
term or weekend revivals and Faith Promise Rallies. We feel that this is the most

effective way we can use our time before we go, and we pray that God will work through us to produce fruit in His kingdom. We have been traveling and preaching since the first of the year. We were in my home area in Ohio during the first part of the year, and I am now traveling in the Mid-west while Kathy is in Iowa waiting for the baby to come. There are still some open dates during the summer and fall. I may be contacted at our mailing address in Goldfield, Iowa. Even though the trips may sometimes be long and tiring, it has been a real thrill to meet many new friends and to renew acquaintance with old ones.
We rejoice in the many doors of service that God continually opens for us. Please keep us in your prayers that God's guidance and strength may be with us. May you be richly blessed in Christ Jesus, and may His grace and peace and mercy be with you. Praying that the whole world may know the Gospel of Jesus . . .

As of the first of March, there has been a total of about $125 monthly support committed by individuals and churches. Much more than this is needed now during the months before the Meyers leave for Brazil. Please pray that the necessary funds will be forthcoming so that expenses can be met without depleting the existing bank balance.

INTRODUCTION

Meet David and Beverly

by the resignation of Woodrow Phillips. He is now serving as tempory head of the Missions Department at O.B.C. for the 1968 - 1969 school year. David and Beverly are anxious to be back working in Brazil. They will be returning to the city of Belem immediately after school is out in June. They are planning an intensive program aimed at reaching the entire city of Belem and the surrounding area. Gary and Kathy will be working closely with David and Beverly and will have a part in the effort to evangelize this area. Pray that God will continue to bless them as they prepare to return to Brazil.

Why are we going to Brazil? We are

going because as Christians we are to live our lives the way that God wants us to live. We believe that the main job for any Christian is to share with others the wonderful life which God has given to us through Jesus. Furthermore, we believe we should live and work where the need is greatest and where we have the greatest opportunities of sharing Jesus with others. We believe we have found such an opportunity of service, as God has opened the door to us
in Brazil. In Brazil there are millions who know little or

nothing about what God has done and can do for them. Since people in Brazil cannot go to church or hear the Bible preached like Americans can do so easily, we want to give them a chance to hear. Please pray with us that God's message will be proclaimed through us.

"Why didn't you tell us sooner?' The words came sad and low; Oh ye who know the gospel truths, Why didn't you let us know? The Saviour died for those who sin, He died to save from woe; But we never heard the story; Why didn't you let us know?

"We appeal to you, 0 Christians, In lands beyond the sea! Why didn't you tell us sooner,
Christ died to set men free?

Nineteen hundred years have passed Since disciples were told to go To the uttermost parts of the earth and and teach; Why didn't you let us know? "You say you are Christ's disciples; That you try His work to do; And yet His very last command Is disobeyed by you.
'Tis indeed a wonderful story! He loved the whole world so, That He came and died to save us.

"You have had the gospel message,

You have known a ^viour's love;

Your dear ones passed from Christian homes,
To the blessed land above.

Why did you let our fathers die, And into the silence go? With no thought of Christ to comfort, Why didn't you let us know?

But you didn't let us know!"

Dear Friends,

Greetings in our Lord, Jesus Christ! The months of August and September have been full with visits with family and friends, and with final details in preparation to leave.
VISIT FAMILY AND FRIENDS. During most of August we visited with friends in Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas. The last of September and first of October was spent with Kathy's family in Iowa. During these last months before leaving, we
have been able to see most of our family. We have been able to attend reunions of

both our families. We have enjoyed seeing everyone, but we have gotten the impres sion a few times, though, that others have enjoyed seeing Stephen more than us. STEPHEN GROWING. Stephen is growing and getting along just fine. He is always so happy (except when he is hungry and Mom doesn't have the food ready). He doesn't know what a stranger is and will smile at anyone who will talk to him. He is five months old now, and will be almost six months old when we get to Brazil. He now weighs about 17 pounds.
DEPARTURE PLANS DELAYED. Because of some problems that have unexpectantly come up with the Brazilian consulate, our departure is going to be delayed. We expect that we will be able to get things straightened out very soon. Instead of leaving the middle of October, we hope to be able to leave by the end of the month. We plan to announce it for sure as soon as we know. We will be in Lima, Ohio, October 8th and plan to stay there until we leave.

MORE REGULAR SUPPORT NEEDED. Since the last issue of the newsletter our sup port has been increasing gradually. As of the first of October, though, we have only about $275 monthly support. This is still about $125 short of our $400 goal which we should have. Although we plan to go even if we don't reach our goal of $400 per
month, we will still need this amount to be able to work more effectively while we
are there.

SPECIAL GIFTS NEEDED. Besides this regular support we now also have a very spec ial need. We have found that travel costs are going to be much higher than expected. Besides what has already been given for our travel fund, we need an additional $1300. This amount is due as soon as we go, so these funds must be provided immediately.

We need special offerings from many people, so we wiU have the funds to pay our trav el costs. If you cannot help personally, perhaps you can help by telling your church or
Bible School class about these needs.

WHEN WE ARRIVE. What are we going to be doing when we get to Brazil? What are our plans? Our main purpose, of course, is to evangelize and teach the Bible. First of all, though, we wiU have to get a house to live in, furnish it, move our things in, and get set up in our new home. The other missionaries will be helping us with these things as it wiU be all new to us. Our next main task, which wiU reaUy begin when we step off the plane, is to learn the language. This project will occupy much of our time, espec ially at first, during the first two years we are there. Learning the language is import ant, because it is impossible to teach the Bible effectively if we cannot communicate properly with the people. Although we will concentrate a lot of our time on the language, we will also be helping the other missionaries in the evangelistic work. There will be much that we will be able to do without having to know Portuguese. I will be working a lot with the radio work, doing recording and production work that will not require speaking. I will also be able to help with other things, such as working in the print shop. In addition to these things, there will be time allotted to correspondence,
bookwork, and private study.

We thank God for all of you who remember us in your prayers, especially during these months that we have been preparing to go. Please continue to remember us in prayer

as we will be facing many new challenges in the future months. We pray that God's
blessing will be with you as you labor for Him.

PRAYER CORNER

I
-

The prophet Isaiah said, "The people who walked in darkness have seen

great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness on them has light shined."
And Jesus said, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (Is. 9:2; Jn. 8:12).

The light is available for all the world, but still most of the world is walk- I
ing in darkness. Only he who has light can lead him who is in darkness. There fore, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." (Matt. 5:16). Let's pray that

^^ksus might shine through us to those in the world of darkness.
