The Moorestown Fire Depart-
ment No. 1 is in the process of
hiring a public information offi-
cer, hoping to make an official an-
nouncement at the board of com-
missioners meeting on Tuesday,
Aug. 27.
We felt we needed something
more official, Fire District Ad-
ministrator Chris Chesner said,
adding the position is non-com-
pensated.
Chesner said he would normal-
ly act as the point contact for the
media or community. This is the
first time the board of commis-
sioners created and approved a
resolution for the position.
The three divisions within the
department division of fire pre-
vention, administration division
and operations would all work
together, sharing information
when needed.
The PIO would funnel the
media or residents to the proper
contact or would answer any
questions on the spot.
According to the job descrip-
tions, the PIO is responsible for
maintaining positive relations
between the public and the fire
department, as well as communi-
cate with the media, maintain the
department website and assist in
coordinating fire department
events.
If there is a news release for a
fire investigation, the PIO would
comment on it or lead them to the
right person, he said.
As long as they are ready to
provide immediate photos and in-
formation that will benefit the de-
partment, I am OK with it, Fire
Marshal Bob Worrell said.
According to Chesner, the fire
department began publishing
minutes, agendas and budgets on
its website long before it became
mandated by the state.
With the use of technology and
its development increasing, by
keeping the website and Face-
book page constantly updated,

Chesner said it would help the de-
partment become more transpar-
ent.
I think the department as a
whole sees a need for it, Chesner
said.
Assistant Fire Marshal Ken
Schweiker spent the past 14 years
with the department, starting as
a volunteer. He was hired as the
assistant fire marshal in 2007.
I think its a wonderful idea
for the department. Its some-
thing that we need, and I think it
will benefit everybody by having
a designated public information
officer, he said.
The next Board of Fire Com-
missioners meeting is on Tues-
day, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the

T
he Second Amendment to the
U.S. Constitution states: A well
regulated militia, being neces-
sary to the security of a free state, the
right of the people to keep and bear
arms shall not be infringed.
Its only 27 words, but it is perhaps
the Amendment thats most open to in-
terpretation.
Gun advocates focus on the phrase
the right of the people when making
their case for why citizens should be
allowed to own, and carry, guns. The
opposing side focuses on the word
militia, saying that the Amendment
in no way meant to reward free rights
for any citizen to own and carry a gun,
whenever and wherever they want.
Last week, local anti-gun groups
won a victory in court, when a federal
appeals court in Philadelphia upheld
New Jerseys law that states residents
need to show a justifiable need to
carry a handgun in public.
The decision means that, even if
you can legally own a gun, you cant
carry it wherever you please, whenev-
er you please.
In a state with 8.87 million people
and high violence areas such as Cam-
den this law is a good one, and this
court decision was the appropriate
one.
Were all for equal rights for bearing
arms, within reason but thats a sub-
ject for another day.
What were not for is wielding these
arms in public, with no legitimate pur-
pose. Police officers, security officers
and other officials are appropriate car-
riers of weapons in public. Everyone
else?
Kinda hard to justify, in our opinion,
so were glad the court agrees with
New Jerseys law that forces people
who want to carry arms in public to
really prove that he or she needs it.
If they can prove a justifiable
need for doing so, then fine. Other-
wise, get real.
There isnt much good that can
come of carrying a gun in public, so
we applaud the state for creating this
stringent law, and also applaud the
U.S. Court of Appeals in Philadelphia
for upholding it.
The law does not infringe upon citi-
zens right to bear arms, and there is
no solid argument against it.
Is there a justifiable need?

tors Office and the state police
are investigating the accident.
Jason Laughlin, spokesman
for the Camden County Prosecu-
tors office, said Camden County
stepped in at the request of the
attorney general to oversee the
investigation along with the state
police due to conflict of interest.
Laughlin said Berner was not
on his Honda motorcycle when
he slid into oncoming traffic be-
fore being struck by a Ford F-150.
Berner, a former U.S. Marine,
spent 26 years as an officer in
Moorestown and graduated from
Moorestown High School in 1979,
according to the MHS class of
1979 profile page.
According to Lieber, Berner al-
ways went above and beyond for
the department, involving him-
self in traffic training, serving as
an accident investigator, a field-
training officer and as the long-
time firearms instructor.
Lieber said Berner was also a
good mentor to the younger offi-
cers entering the department.
He was a really steady guy,
Lieber said, adding he would di-
rect younger officers to Berner if
they needed help in a particular
area.
According to Lieber, Berners
laugh was very distinctive, res-
onating throughout the entire de-
partment.
He said he always had a joke.
Don Brauckmann, Cinnaminson
Township Committee member
and Moorestown police officer,
posted his condolences on Cin-
naminson Townships Facebook
page.
Our thoughts, sympathy and
prayers go out to Officer Berners
family and his extended
Moorestown police/law enforce-
ment family during this trying
time. Godspeed, he said in the
post.
Moorestown Council members
were also saddened by Berners
passing, releasing a joint state-
ment on the tragedy: "We are
shocked and deeply saddened to
learn of the death of
Moorestown Police Officer Craig
Berner.
Berner lived his life giving
back to others not only as a police
officer, but as a former U.S. Ma-
rine.
There are no words that can
adequately express our gratitude
for his service to Moorestown, or
our sorrow for his loss. We pray
that his family and friends are
comforted by his memory at this
extremely difficult time."
A ceremony was held on Satur-
day, Aug. 3, at the First United
Methodist Church, 446 Camden
Ave.
Donations may be made to the
Craig W. Berner Memorial Fund
to benefit Berners children,

The Moorestown 10U District team claimed its third consecutive district title by defeating Delran 7-1. It
was an intense battle between the two teams, with a score of 1-1 through the first four innings. A home
run in the bottom of the fifth by Moorestown's Eric Schmoll his first started a furious six-run rally to
win the game. Moorestown's pitching continued to dominate as starting pitcher Wyatt Atkinson held Del-
ran to only one run through three innings, while a strong close by Danny Gerber sealed the deal for the
three-time district champs. Moorestown advanced to the South Jersey State Championship held in Del-
ran.

County asks residents to stay away
from stray/wild animals due to rabies
The Burlington County Health
Department is asking residents
to be cautious, and to avoid
strange, wild and/or stray ani-
mals.
We want to remind all resi-
dents that rabies is present in the
county, Freeholder Joanne
Schwartz said. Residents are
encouraged to stay away from un-
familiar or wild animals.
This year, there have been
some confirmed cases of rabies
in wildlife in Burlington County.
Rabies can be seen in animals
such as raccoons, bats, skunks,
foxes and groundhogs. Rabies is
always fatal in animals and is
fatal in humans if prompt treat-
ment is not sought.
Pet owners are encouraged to
have their pets vaccinated for ra-
bies. There is also a vaccine for
humans that can be given to indi-
viduals who might have been ex-
posed to rabies. The vaccine is a
series of injections that has
proved effective in preventing the
disease from developing in hu-
mans if administered early
enough. The best way to avoid ra-
bies is prevention.
To protect yourself against ra-
bies:
Do not touch or feed wild
animals, or stray dogs or cats.
Keep garbage in tightly
sealed containers.
Stay away from any animal
that is behaving aggressively or a
wild animal that appears ill or is
acting unusually friendly. Call
your local animal control officer
or police department to report
the animal.
If you find a bat indoors
that may have had contact with
someone, do not release it before
calling animal control or the po-
lice to determine whether it
should be tested.

Keeping Your Grandchildren
Safe will be on Friday, Sept. 6,
from 2 to 4 p.m.
Presenter John Kriger said the
session is intended to assist
grandparents and nonparent
caretakers to better understand
the challenges and risks of behav-
ioral and substance abuse con-
fronting today's children and ado-
lescents.
Often grandparents are the pri-
mary caretakers of their grand-
children due to parental illness or
other circumstances rendering
the parents unable to be the pri-
mary caretakers.
Because of this it is often easy
for young people to take advan-
tage of this relationship without
the grandparents having any idea
of what is happening. In some
cases, the grown children are ac-
cessing their elder parents med-
ication.
Grandparents need to under-
stand the world of prescription
medication abuse, the impact of
over-the-counter substances and
the current availability of infor-
mation, predatory behavior, and
the availability of a drug culture
on the Internet.
Attendees will discover how
the media and legitimate compa-
nies are putting our children at
risk.
Learn how the drug trade has
changed since you were in school;
and with it the climate and cul-
ture of drug distribution.
See how highly psychoactive
substances are now being sold
"legally" in convenience stores
and gas stations.
Uncover concrete steps you can
take today to minimize their risk
and increase your knowledge of
what many children already
know.
For more information on the
event, Kriger can be contacted at
(609) 387-5226 or john@krigercon-
sulting.com.
