Palantir Technologies Mission Specialist Applicant Project

Welcome to the application process for Palantir Technologies. You will find this process to be challenging and very rewarding and we look forward to meeting you. If you are selected to join the team, one of your first requirements will be to present a demo using Palantir. So, this task is not only familiarizing you with the Palantir platform, but preparing you to be ahead of the curve, a trait we embrace. For this project you will get acquainted with Palantir by using AnalyzeTheUS. AnalyzeTheUS allows anyone to use Palantir, to openly explore available data from key data such as www.data.gov. We suggest watching the demos at www.palantir.com/library to become familiar with some previous use cases of Palantir. The Palantir user manual can be found at http://docs.palantir.com, and will be a key document to help you through the project. Be sure to use the version of the User Manual that corresponds to the version you are using on ATUS, which is Version 3.8. 1. You must first request an account at www.analyzethe.us. Once you have received an account (it is almost instantaneous once requested) login and select Launch. This will launch Palantir virtually. When prompted to login to Palantir be sure to select AnalyzeTheUS as your Authentication (Auth) Source. Use the same login you created for the site. * If you have a Mac or Linux-based operating system and are having issues accessing AnalyzeTheUS, please contact support@palantir.com. If you continue to have issues contact your recruiter ASAP. 2. Expectations: We would like to see how you are thinking through some basic analysis, creating quality products and get you some practice with Palantir. We expect you to be able to present any findings in a Powerpoint product that represents your quality of work. When findings are exported from Palantir the images can be manipulated so take time to create your product. The exercises are two separate basic exercises and are not an entire demo with an end-state or storyline. The intent is for you to get some quick hands-on with the platform in a way that wont occupy hours of your time, while still being able to demonstrate your aptitude to demonstrate some of the basic analytic capabilities of the platform. Throughout the project, be sure to take snapshots/screenshots of your results to answer any questions for your end product. Hint: Use the Summary Application to export most of your findings/results. Exercise 1. Explore Palantir 1. To begin, familiarize yourself with the Applications in Palantir Home Browser Graph Map Object Explorer Summary Collaboration

Take a look at each of the applications and explore its capabilities. Feel free to use the user manual for features of each application. *Data Sources is another application, however you wont need to use that during the project. 2. Helpers are unique to each application and can be found on the right, left and bottom or top of the application you are using. Using the drop down menu at the top of Palantir, you can add/change/delete helpers from your views in each application. 3. On the map, conduct a radius search of 50 km around downtown San Francisco. 4. What type of objects are these according to the Histogram? What Federal Agencies are represented in the data from your search? 5. Drill down to the commercial organizations. Drag those objects to the Browser. 6. Filter the organizations into Consultant/Consulting organizations. How many organizations are there? 7. Bring the Consultant organizations to the Graph. Conduct a search around for linked entities. Take a snapshot of the Graph. 8. What type of consulting services do the organizations provide? Take a snapshot of the Histogram. 9. Select one of the organizations (double click) to view in the Browser. Select Watch this object to set up an Object Watch feed. Explain the purpose of setting up an Object watch. What are the other types of feeds? (Hint: Look in the Folders & Feeds section of the Browser). 10. From your search results on your graph, choose something that looks interesting to investigate further. 11. Go to the Collaboration Application. Create a team (you will be the only member of the team). Once created, share the object with the team. 12. Export your results

Exercise 2. Getting to it on your own! For this exercise, we want you to explore the data in Palantir/ATUS and conduct your own analysis and create a few products. For the data, you will be comparing health care facilities & farmers markets locations in relation to one another and looking at specific care provided at the facilities. Wed like you to do some basic analytics in looking at this data and drawing your own conclusion. You can also make recommendations for additional data sources you think would help enrich your findings.

To begin, select one city from Column A and one city from Column B to conduct your analysis Column A New York, NY San Francisco, CA Washington, DC Philadelphia, PA Dallas, TX Column B Seattle, WA Houston, TX Boston, MA Miami, FL Chicago, IL

1. Conduct searches in the approximate center of each city you have chosen. You can do this via a radius search or polygon search. Search for Hospitals and Commercial Organizations in these areas. 2. In the Histogram, select only the Commercial Organizations. Drag those organizations to the Browser. Going back to the Map, remove the Commercial Organizations (keep the Hospitals on the Map) 3. In the Browser, filter your results to just Farmers Markets. Add those objects to the Map. 4. There is a direct correlation to the location of hospitals and farmers markets between Column A and Column B. What do you notice about the proximity of farmers markets to hospitals from your selection in Column A vs. Column B? Show the general proximity of those objects from the Map. (Hint: Heatmap helper) 5. In looking at the hospitals closest to farmers markets in Column A, what are some interesting aspects of the hospitals near the Farmers Markets? In particular, do they provide cardiac programs or have cancer treatment centers on the premises? 6. In either of the columns, which of the Farmers Markets co-located with the hospitals? Provide either a snapshot of their dossier or a snapshot of their map locations. 7. What could be some additional data you might be interested in researching more to help with this analysis? After finishing with the below exercises, please send your recruiter the answers to the questions and your findings from all exercises in a Powerpoint file, along with some of the snapshots/screenshots you created.
