Practice!

DRUMS
1. Learn Tunes by finding many versions of it and listening to how it is played. 2. Sing the melody until it is stuck in my head. 3. Play the melody of the tune on the snare drum using stickings and rolls 4. Orchestrate the melody logically around the kit, exact every time. 5. Begin ornamenting the melody like early New Orleans improvisation. 6. Improvise with the melody in mind. 7. Improvise with the harmonic movement in mind, focusing on structure; try to sing a legit bass line to the songs harmony. 8.Apply Guiliana graphs and alterations to give shape to the solos on a macro level. 9.Try playing to get a certain players vibe. 10. Apply by performing by using aebersold tracks. Study transcriptions of time and soloing of different great drummers. Sing the other parts they were interacting with (Bass, Piano, Soloist, ect.) Why are they interacting the way they are, why are they playing what they are playing. Try developing ideas independent of form, start cymbal and try to do everything you can with the idea. Study snare drum books like Wilcoxon and Circone and loosen up my hands. Sight read big band charts along with the appropriate recording, may have to buy stuff. Study the shit out of Papa Jo, Sonny Payne, and Mel Lewis! Search for sounds on the drumset. Work towards achieving and understanding the flow of Elvin and Tonys feels. Continue to develop coordination through my own ideas and books. Study Latin and Straight 8th feels, explore broken 8th note feel in any style to create an interactive groove, not just a repetitive beat. Experiment with tension in my grip and body. Work on having impeccable time at all tempos! Work on brushes, sound and feel.

PIANO/VIBES/JAZZ HARMONY
1. Learn the melody and harmony for a tune. 2. Apply chord outline exercise using voicing arpeggios. 3. Apply scale exercise. With 2 & 3 start with quarters, try walking bass lines first. 4. Try applying licks over the changes of the tune. 5. Do a transcription of a great playing over the changes. Analyze it slowly. Transcribe a tunes melody and harmony by ear! Practice improvising by using aebersolds. Practice all scales, chords, arpeggios and ii V Is. Work out of Omnibook for licks and hitting the changes, explore Levine book and Hal Crook books, tear them apart and try to understand all of the formulas and basic theory. Work out of the more basic aebersold volumes.

COMPOSITION/HARMONY
Analyze many of the Bach chorales and look for his tendencies, read through books regarding the work of Bach and try to see how he applies the concepts explained in the book. Try to write chorales in the style of Bach, using different non chord tones and such. Write a lot of examples to bring back to school. Understand 16th century modal counterpoint and buy all of the music history products. Use books to understand composers and try to break down their compositions and understand them. Use writing exercises in books to practice certain techniques, have a huge grasp on counterpoint and move towards understanding the evolution of composing in history. Come up with a daily plan towards working goals.
