WORKSHEET 5

Reading the Bible as Literature

ON THE PRINCIPLES OF LITERARY INTERPRETATION

GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Use the three principles of literary interpretation to come up with a full reading of a Biblical passage.

SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS: 1. As a group, agree on which text i.e. passage each of the members is going to read. 2. Individually, research about your passage. Make sure that your sources are valid and legitimate. 3. After gathering enough data, discuss among yourselves the passage you have chosen. Agree on the genre of the text. Cite evidences to support your claim (genre). Then articulate the Author Meaning and Text Meaning of the passage. When you do these, make sure that you employ the big ideas of the three principles on literary interpretation. 4. When your group is done, work individually for the Personal Meaning of the text. Elaborate on it i.e. articulate your context so that any reader would clearly understand your reading. 5. Complete the table on the next page. 6. When you are done, upload your worksheet to Scribd, and embed it to your PLW.

LITERARY GENRE

Prophecy; Poetry
AUTHOR MEANING Isaiah was writing to the people of the nation of Judah about the Lord being their salvation. He was reassuring the people that there is a God to believe in, and with faith, they would have hope. They would have a reason to live, and rid of all the evil thats widespread in their land. TEXT MEANING In the world before the text, it had been said that the nation of Judah were suffering from evil and idolatry was prominent in society. Due to this, the people had no hope that their society would thrive in evil. Kingdoms were increasing in power preparing to dominate nations, which would affect the life of the people. In the text itself, there is a comfort in theme as it talks about that God is their salvation from the unfortunate events that they have lived through. They will be saved. PERSONAL MEANING My personal take here is that sometimes in life, when we feel hopeless and melancholic in times of desperation, we tend to think of nothing. We try to think that may be our life is worth nothing due to all the tragedies that unfold before our eyes. However, we have to try to remember and stay strong that despite all of this, there is still hope. We can nd hope in others for them to help us. We may have tripped on a stone, but it is a sure thing that we would get back up again, because that is who we are. We are young and we are strong!
