Lesson Plan for Science Year 5: Subject: Time: Date: Number of students: Class: Topic: Sub-topic: Year 5 Unit 7- Heat Hot or Cold? Science 1220 pm- 1320pm (60 minutes) 4 July 2013 30
Learning objective: 4.1 Understanding the temperature is an indicator of degree of hotness. Learning outcome: At the end of the class, the pupils are able to: I. II. III. IV. V. Pre-requisite knowledge: State that when a substance gains heat, it will become warmer. State that when a substance loses heat, it will become cooler. Measure temperature using the correct technique. State the metric unit of temperature. State that temperature of an object or material increases as it gains heat.
Pupils learnt about conductors of heat in Year 4. In Unit 4 of Year 5, pupils have learnt that heat is a form of energy and it can be derived from other form of energy and can be transformed into another form.
Use and handle science apparatus and substances, clean science apparatus.
Appreciating the contribution of science and technology ( Pupils appreciate the invention of thermometer that can be used to measure the degree of hotness of a substance easily, precisely and accurately).
Additional scientific Attitudes and values Teaching strategies: Teaching and Learning : Resources
Being honest and accurate in recording and validating data (Pupils measure and record temperature correctly).
Experiment.
PowerPoint slides, videos, tripod stand, beaker, Bunsen burner, thermometer, wire gauze, water
Phases
Content
Learning activities Teachers activity Pupils activity -Pupils focus on the video.
Teaching Aids: Video Eliciting ideas (7 minutes) Questioning -Teacher asks questions: -Teacher asks: a) What you feel when you touch the ice? (cold) b) What happen to the ice? (melting) -Teacher shows a basin of ice water as Restructuring Hands-on ideas (38 minutes) Activity Basin A and warm water as Basin B. -Teacher then asks: a) What you feel when you touch Basin A? (cold) b) What you feel when you touch Basin B? - Pupils topuch the water in the basin and answer the questions. -Pupils look at the thermometer and learn types of thermometer. -Pupils learn how to get the reading at the Teaching Aids: Thermometer, clamp, beaker, glass rod, wire Thinking skill: Relating. Science process skill: Observing, Classifying. -Pupils give as many examples as they could. Science process skill: Classifying.
(warm) c) What happen if the water inside the basin A and B are left for a few minutes? -Teacher explains the warm water becomes cooler because it loses heat to the surrounding. The cold water becomes warmer because it gains heat from the surrounding. When the water losses heat, it cools down. When it gains heat, it becomes warmer. -Teacher shows types of thermometer such as mercury thermometer, digital clinical thermometer and alcohol thermometer. -Teacher introduces the correct technique when using a thermometer to measure thermometer and proper way to read the marking on thermometer at the meniscus of the liquid.
meniscus of the liquid. -Pupils carry out the experiment under teachers guidance. -Pupils write down the reading of the experiment.
Scientific attitudes and Noble Values: Being honest and accurate in recording and validating data
Experiment
-Teacher starts the experiments by setting up the apparatus with the pupils. -Teacher guides the pupils.
Handouts
Science Process Skill: Predicting Thinking skill: Relating. Teaching Aids: Handouts.
-Teacher ends the lesson by leading pupils to do the cleaning of the apparatus and put back to the original places.
-Pupils clean and put the apparatus back to the original places.
