Twisted pair Two insulated copper wires that are wound together to form a pair. There are several systems to distinguish wire diameter, however the American Wire Gauge (AWG) is the most commonly used. The higher AWG number is the smaller the conductor diameter. Category cables commonly consist of 4 pairs (8 wires). The cable characteristics of Category cable are defined by the generally recognized standards such as TIA568 and ISO 11801. The manufacturing of this cable differs depending on which Category cable is required. The cables proper physical structure and chosen insulating materials will determine the electrical characteristics and data transfer of the cables signal The following types of twisted pair cable are: UTP cable unshielded twisted pair. Cable consists of one or more pairs of wires sheathed in plastic jacket. UTP cable is widely used because of flexibility and compactness. FTP cable foiled twisted pair this twisted pair has a common foil shield in addition to a copper conductor, (referred to as a drain wire) to drain the induced current. STP cable shielded twisted pair this twisted pair has a common braid shield. SFTP cable shielded/foiled twisted pair this twisted pair has two shields, one braided shield and one foil shield. Some types of shielded cable have shield over each individual pair of copper wires which is referred to as individual shielding. This type of shielding protects the cable from external as well as internal EMI (electromagnetic interferences) and RFI (radio frequency interference).

Multi-pair cables are mainly intended for main cabling. This cable is specified up to 100 MHz. Category 5 UTP multi-pair cables meet ANSI/TIA/EIA 568A, ISO/IEC 11801, and EN 50173 requirements for category 5. The cable structure provides high crosstalk attenuation. The conductor insulation is made of PE. Indoor cable has a light grey PVC jacket, outdoor cable has a black PVC jacket. Each bunch of cable is separated by wrapped tape. Temperature plays a great role in cabling technology. Low temperature influence results in a loss of cable flexibility. The cable becomes fragile, and it becomes difficult to work with it. At present, Category 7 is the only cable standard which allows 10GBase-T over 328 ft (100 m). Category 6 (ISO 11801, E class) presents a cabling system with unshielded twisted pairs among others, whereas category 7 (ISO 11801, F class) presupposes the same cabling system but with shielded twisted pairs only. Category 7/F class cable is rated for transmission frequencies of up to 600 MHz, which is considerably higher than category 6 transmission frequencies (up to 250 MHz). This is due to the characteristics of its construction: the pairs consist of conductors with minimum diameters of 0.023 (0.58 mm). This standard also specifies individually-shielded pairs inside an overall shield. Besides these high characteristics, individually-shielded pairs can be separated inside the cable and used for different applications which require a lack of mutual crosstalk. For example, two pairs can be used for data transmission, another pair for an analog telephone line, and the other for video transmission.

Cables of category 7 and 8 have essential improvements in the construction of their pair shields. The cross-section of the shielded twisted pair appears not to be round or oval as it had been, but is a definitely shaped sector. Four-Pairs taken together constitute a complete circle. Thus, the wire braid wraps much smoother around the cable core of twisted pairs than it does in any other cable. Additionally, in comparison with SSTP cables of other constructions, this cable looks smoother and tighter which means it can be more conveniently laid and more easily pulled through the cable duct. The improvement in insulation material in the category 8 cables results in a lower rate of attenuation per unit length. This positively affects the cable itself and the wiring as a whole. The crosstalk attenuation for upper frequencies is 2030 dB higher than would be expected. Thus, the twisted pair stays protected up to a frequency of 1000 MHz.
