AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION Fault finding - Introduction

23A

Faults Faults are declared as either present or stored (depending on whether they appeared in a certain context and have disappeared since, or whether they remain present but have not been diagnosed within the current context). The present or stored status of faults should be taken into consideration when the diagnostic tool is used following the + after ignition supply being switched on (without acting on the system components). For a present fault, apply the procedure described in the Interpretation of faults section. For a stored fault , note the faults displayed and apply the instructions in the Notes section. If the fault is confirmed when the instructions in the Notes section are applied, the fault is present. Deal with the fault If the fault is not confirmed, check: the electrical lines which correspond to the fault, the connectors on these lines (corrosion, bent pins, etc.), the resistance of the component detected as faulty, the condition of the wires (melted or split insulation, wear).

Conformity check The aim of the conformity check is to check data that does not produce a fault on the diagnostic tool because the data is inconsistent. Therefore, this stage is used to: carry out fault finding on faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer complaint. check that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault recurring after repairs. This section gives the fault finding procedures for statuses and parameters and the conditions for checking them. If a status is not behaving normally or a parameter is outside the permitted tolerance values, consult the corresponding fault finding page.

Customer complaints - Fault finding chart If the test with the diagnostic tool is OK but the customer complaint is still present, the fault should be treated by customer complaints . A summary of the overall procedure to follow is provided on the following page in the form of a flow chart.

4. FAULT FINDING PROCEDURE (continued) Wiring check Fault finding problems Disconnecting the connectors and/or manipulating the wiring harness may temporarily remove the cause of a fault. Electrical measurements of voltage, resistance and insulation are generally correct, especially if the fault is not present when the analysis is made (stored fault). Visual inspection Look for damage under the bonnet and in the passenger compartment. Carefully check the fuses, insulators and wiring routing. Look for signs of oxidation. Tactile inspection While manipulating the wiring harness, use the diagnostic tool to note any change in fault status from "stored" to "present". Make sure that the connectors are properly locked. Apply light pressure to the connectors. Twist the wiring harness. If there is a change in status, try to locate the source of the fault. Inspection of each component Disconnect the connectors and check the appearance of the clips and tabs, as well as the crimping (no crimping on the insulating section). Make sure that the clips and tabs are properly locked in the sockets. Check that no clips or tabs have been dislodged during connection. Check the clip contact pressure using an appropriate model of tab. Resistance check Check the continuity of entire lines, then section by section. Look for a short circuit to earth, to + 12 V or to another wire. If a fault is detected, repair or replace the wiring harness.

5. FAULT FINDING LOG IMPORTANT Any fault on a complex system call for thorough fault finding with the appropriate tools. The FAULT FINDING LOG, which should be completed during the fault finding procedure, ensures a record is kept of the procedure carried out. It is an essential document when consulting the manufacturer.

IMPORTANT

IT IS THEREFORE MANDATORY TO FILL OUT A FAULT FINDING LOG EACH TIME FAULT FINDING IS CARRIED OUT. You will always be asked for this log: q when requesting technical assistance from the Techline, q for approval requests when replacing parts for which approval is obligatory, q to be attached to monitored parts for which reimbursement is requested. The log is needed for warranty reimbursement, and enables better analysis of the parts removed.

6. SAFETY ADVICE Safety rules must be observed during any work on a component to prevent any damage or injury: check that the battery is properly charged to avoid damaging the computers with a low load, Use the proper tools.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Fault finding - Role of components

23A

Role of main automatic transmission components Automatic transmission computer: The computer is mounted to the gearbox and enables the entire system to be controlled. Its role is to define the optimum operating mode for the automatic transmission (modify the torque transmitted to the drive wheels by the automatic transmission), inform the driver (instrument panel, information display, display indicator on the bridge piece, buzzer) and communicate with the other computers. To carry out this function, the transmission computer takes account of: the operation of the automatic transmission, signals exchanged with other computers, driver requests. Gearbox oil temperature sensor: Its role is to inform the automatic transmission computer of the gearbox oil temperature. Gearbox input speed sensor Its role is to inform the automatic transmission computer of the turbine speed. Gearbox output speed sensor: Its role is to inform the automatic transmission computer of the vehicle speed. Brake light switch: Its role is to inform the automatic transmission computer that the driver has depressed the brake pedal. Multifunction switch: Its role is to inform the automatic transmission computer of the gear lever position. Shift-lock: The purpose of this function is to lock the lever in Park position. Solenoid valves: The solenoid valves are fitted in the factory and are indissociable from the hydraulic distributor to ensure optimal gearbox operation, so they cannot be replaced separately. The automatic transmission has two types of solenoid valve: 2 "all or nothing" solenoid valves, 7 "progressive" solenoid valves. Of these 9 solenoid valves, 8 are used to control gear changes in automatic and manual modes, and one controls the oil pressure in the automatic gearbox hydraulic distributor.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Fault finding - Function

23A

The automatic transmission computer performs the following functions: Gearbox operating mode selection: According to the vehicle speed and the driver's command expressed by the accelerator pedal position, the automatic transmission determines the best moment for the gear change. The automatic transmission computer corrects any driver errors and inhibits engagement of a gear that would cause the engine to over- or under-rev. Gear changes: Taking into account the various input factors, the computer will decide whether to actuate the various solenoid valves to ensure smooth system operation (gearbox clutches, brakes and hydraulics). The computer is also involved in: the gear change quality, protecting the automatic gearbox in the event of a malfunction. Declutching when stopped: This function temporarily disables creeping, when the vehicle is stationary with a gear engaged and the brake pedal has been depressed. The purpose of this function is to: q reduce fuel consumption, q reduce vehicle vibrations, q reduce vehicle drag to save the hydraulic slave cylinders, q increase the oil service life. This function is performed by the automatic transmission computer. The automatic transmission computer causes a temporary pressure drop in clutch 1. The clutch 1 solenoid valve is actuated when the operating conditions are met (vehicle stationary, gear engaged and brake pedal depressed).

Lockup/release definition: The converter is a hydraulic clutch providing a flexible and automatic connection between the engine and the automatic transmission mechanism: its operation can be broken down into two phases: q When starting, it multiplies engine torque: CONVERTER FUNCTION. q At high speed, it transmits the engine torque: COUPLER FUNCTION. The converter body comprises two half-shells welded together. The converter is coupled to the engine crankshaft by the drive plate. The converter is continuously filled with oil. The impeller is integral with the converter casing and the engine. The turbine is linked to the turbine shaft transmission mechanism. The stator is placed between the impeller and the turbine. The purpose of the lockup function is to lock the turbine and the converter casing together, transforming a hydraulic connection into a mechanical connection. The aim of this is to eliminate problems caused by slippage*, resulting in improved performance of vehicles with automatic transmission. slippage*: Slippage means the partial loss of drive power, which results in increased fuel consumption and reduced engine braking. *EVS = Shift solenoid

Fault finding - Replacement of components

23A

Replacing the gearbox computer: Remove the automatic transmission computer (see MR 370 mechanical, 23A, Automatic transmission, Automatic transmission computer, Removal - Refitting). Refit the automatic transmission computer (see MR 370 mechanical, 23A, Automatic transmission, Automatic transmission computer, Removal - Refitting). Establish communication with the diagnostic tool. Use command VP001 Enter VIN. Run command VP009 "Write last service operation date". Do not carry out any automatic programming if replacing the automatic transmission computer. Automatic programming is finalised when the vehicle is driven. In order to optimise the automatic programming before delivering the vehicle to the customer, apply the "Programming procedure" shown below. Replacing the hydraulic distributor: Remove the gearbox hydraulic distributor (see MR 370 mechanical, 23A, automatic transmission, Hydraulic distributor, Removal - Refitting ). Refit the gearbox hydraulic distributor and the gear selector on the computer (see MR 370 mechanical, 23A, automatic transmission, Hydraulic distributor, Removal - Refitting). Establish communication with the diagnostic tool. Run command VP009 "Write last service operation date". Do not carry out any automatic programming if replacing the automatic gearbox hydraulic distributor. Automatic programming is finalised when the vehicle is driven. In order to optimise the automatic programming before delivering the vehicle to the customer, apply the "Programming procedure" shown below. PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE: Programming conditions: The automatic gearbox oil temperature should be between 20 C and 100 C (the first time the ignition is switched on it should be between 60 C and 100 C). Stationary, engine running, brake pedal depressed : Engage neutral at least 5 times to consolidate the programming. While driving: Engage the same gear at least 5 times (ie. in the same conditions) to consolidate the programming. Note: Gear changes are slow and harsh the first few times the vehicle is driven, until the automatic transmission computer has carried out its automatic programming. During upshifts and downshifts, the system analyses variations in oil pressure, components (play in the brakes and clutches, changes to spring stiffness due to ageing) and input torque, then corrects them in order to maintain the quality of gear changes. The system analyses the turbine speed during the 3 phases of drag reduction (selection of Neutral when stationary, regulation during drag reduction and deselection of Neutral) and corrects this speed by adjusting the converter lockup solenoid valve pressure.

NOTES

System effects: No engine torque transmitted to wheels. Switch to defect mode occurs according to vehicle speed safety conditions (vehicle speed < 32 mph (54 km/h) ). The system effects will vary depending on which solenoid valve is faulty: If caused by brake 2 solenoid valve, system switches to fixed 2nd, 3rd or 5th gear safe mode. If caused by the clutch solenoid valve, system switches to fixed 2nd, 3rd or 6th gear safe mode. If caused by the clutch solenoid valve, system switches to fixed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th gear safe mode. If caused by the clutch solenoid valve, system switches to fixed 3rd, 5th or 6th gear safe mode. In all cases, restarting is in 3rd gear. If vehicle stopped in Drive, system switches to fixed 5th gear if engine speed is lower than 2000 rpm. If vehicle stopped in R, switch to R if engine speed is lower than 2000 rpm. In reverse, moving off when "kick-down" detected.
