Engineers, I Need advice, please help - tripping of MV switchgear when transformer breaker is closed in the RMU

our customer is supply power from 2 generators at 13.8KV to our MV switchgear which has 2 incomers, incomer CB1 and incomer CB2 (1 working + 1 standby). when i close the incomer CB1 and outgoing CB1, the RMUs get energized (total 9 RMUs). However, when i try to close the outgoing breaker of RMU to transformer i.e. "Tee-off" breaker, the incomer CB1 of MVSG trips and gives a fault indication of over/undervoltage. however, when the customer runs 4 generators, there is no problem and the system runs smoothly with transformer and downstream MCC & load powered up. Iam confused as to why the MV incomer 1 and incomer 2 breaker gets trip due to undervoltage when i try to power up transformer on no load with 2 generators supplying the MV switchgear. and when 4 generators supply, there is no problem at all even with load.?? 3 days ago

Ing. OleUnfollow Follow Ing. Ole Ing. Ole Knudsen Transformer inrush current! Try inserting a time delay before the relays trip the load on undervoltage. Just a few hundred milliseconds will probably suffice. With four generators you have half the supply impedance as with two, so the volt drop will be half as big. Having load connected reduces this volt drop even further. 2 days ago Unlike Like

GaniyuUnfollow Follow Ganiyu Ganiyu Olabode Pls check the AVRs and the sensing voltage of the generators. Are the 4 generators synchronized together? Have you tried the other two on a seperate basis? Have you tried the standby gen alone? If you have done all these, then check the Cold Load pickup of your Relays and increase the setting. 1 day ago Unlike Like

Consider the Upstream and Downstream Load Flow and Fault Analysis by using ETAP or other Power System Software..That is more reliable solutions, more effective and safe. 11 hours ago Unlike Like

BenUnfollow Follow Ben Ben Laming Does just sound like magnetisation current of the other transformers on the circuit. As the first post says, put a time delay before the relay operates or try to close the outgoing CB1 with less transformers connected to the circuit, therefore much less magnetisation current. 4 hours
