SYLLABUS FOR PRECALCULUS WITH TRIGONOMETRY TEXTS: (NEW) - Precalculus with Trigonometry (concepts and applications); Foerster; 2007

*(OLD) - Modern Trigonometry; Wooston, Beckenbach, Buchanan, Dolciani; 1979 CONTENT: 1st Semester - Sets, Complex Numbers, Logic, Inverse Functions, Appendix A*, and Chapters 1-4 2nd Semester - Sec. 9.1*, Ch. 5,8,11,12,15, and Sec. 6.2,6.6,14.1-14.3, Comp. Interest, Loans, and Annuties. BASIC ASSUMPTIONS: The methods and procedures used in this course are based on the following assumptions. STUDENTS: 1. Have successfully completed Advanced Algebra II and Geometry, preferably with a letter grade of "C" or better. 2. Are interested in learning mathematics. 3. Shall do every assignment possible. 4. Shall study the textbook, reference materials, all handout materials, and use every "legitimate" resource available. 5. Shall help other students and seek help from other students. (This does NOT mean you "copy" someone's work or allow them to copy your work.) 6. Shall attend (AND BE ON TIME FOR) every class session possible. 7. Shall seek help from the instructor, and other instructors, when necessary. 8. Shall participate in class discussion and share ideas and information. 9. Shall, when absent, make up all assignments. Ordinarily you will have two school days for each day of absence. 10. Shall take notes and study them. 11. Shall cooperate with other students and with the instructor. 12. SHALL FOLLOW ALL RULES AND PROCEDURES AS STATED IN THE STUDENT HANDBOOK. 13. SHALL TAKE ON THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A LEARNER. EQUIPMENT NEEDED: The student will need ample notebook paper and a VERY LARGE SPIRAL (OR 3-RING) TYPE NOTEBOOK. The student shall also need a calculator. Make sure you purchase one with the trig & log functions (Look particularly for a Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (DMS) key.) IN addition, it will be to your later benefit to have one that has the statistical and possibly the Hyperbolic keys and functions. There are many satisfactory calculators on the market ranging in price from $15 to $75 and up, IF YOU DON'T ALREADY OWN A "SATISFACTORY" CALCULATOR, IT WILL BE AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE YOU WILL NEED ONE IN THIS COURSE. IN THE MEAN TIME SHOP AROUND, LOOK FOR SALES ASK QUESTIONS AND GET THE BEST POSSIBLE DEAL. You may wish to have a compass, protractor, and a straight edge for your work outside of the classroom. These items will be provided to be used IN CLASS. Paper will be provided ONLY on tests and if pencils are needed you will be charged for them. BASIC PROCEDURES & METHODS TO BE USED: The instructor will primarily use a lecture type presentation accompanied with question-and-answer sessions. There will be some type of assignment nearly every day. Less than 1/5 of your grade will be based on your daily work with the remaining 4/5 coming from quizzes, shotguns, chapter tests, unit tests, semester test, final exam, and possibly extra credit and readings. The extra credit should challenge some of you who might have been bored with the content of your previous courses in mathematics. EVALUATION: It is the student's responsibility to do the work and the instructor's responsibility to evaluate the quality and correctness of the work. We shall ATTEMPT to use the following grade distribution using a TOTAL point accumulation and then expressing each student's score as a percentage of the possible. 85% - - 100% = A DAILY ASSIGNMENTS - - - - -20% 75% - - - 84% = B TESTS & QUIZZES - - - - - - - - 80% 65% - - - 74% = C TOTAL 100% 55% - - - 64% = D 0% - - - 54% = F EXTRA CREDIT will be available; but, it will be limited to not more than 3% of the total. If at ANY TIME you have a question concerning your status, PLEASE come in to visit. DON'T wait until it might be too late. HAVE A GOOD YEAR ...
