The IPG Interns Name: Jo Brister Subject Science 1. TEKS Science, Grade 5.

8(c) Demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky; Date: July 27, 2014 Grade Level: 5 2. Big Understandings It is important to understand about different cycles that occur on the earth (e.g. season, tides, day/night, ect) because we, as humans, have to survive on earth.

Objective I will demonstrate the day/night as the earth moves. 3 Assessment Evidence: Students will demonstrate understanding by replicating the phases of the moon on the Oreos. Students will draw each phase of the moon. Modification: Students will draw 4 phases with extended amount of time. (size & input) 4. Opening Hook: What do you know about the book "New Moon"? I like all those comments but we are going to throw out all those thoughts about vampires and this person loves that person out the door. We are going to be learning about the phases of the moon. 5. Instructional Strategies / Student Activities Input: Did you know the moon is different every night? It grows from a thin crescent to a full moon then back to a crescent moon every month and that is because the moon rotates around the earth. Does anyone know how many phases of the moon there are? There are 8 phases of the moon (New Moon, Waxing Crescent, 1st Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning Crescent) Can anyone name one of the phases? Modeling: Let me show you what I want you to do with the Oreos and the popsicle stick. First, I want you to pull out all your materials out of your bag. Then I want you to gently twist your Oreo apart, like so, and then with your popsicle stick I want you to scrape the icing off one side of the Oreo . Do not eat the frosting because we are going to use it. SPED students will have one Oreo will be twisted already. Guided Practice: Now, what we are going to do with the Oreo is make a replicate of four of the different phases. First we are going to make the Waxing Half (last quarter) of the moon. The next phase that we are going to replicate is the Waning Crescent moon; when you are finished put your Oreo up. CFU: When you think you have created the phase correctly put your Oreo up so I can check to see if it is correct. Thumbs up if you understood the directions. Okay, so I see that we understand the directions so we will move on. I will be looking around the room to check for understanding before we move on through out the lesson. Modification: Will be Struggling students will be paired with a peer buddy. (Input) Independent Practice: I've passed out two worksheets. I want you to replicate 6 of the moon phases with the two Oreos from the first worksheet. I will be walking around to check your progress as you are working. The second worksheet will be used so that you can draw each phase for homework and turn it into science box. Modification: student will replicate 4 phases of the moon on worksheet. (size) 6. Materials / Resources Oreos, worksheet, popsicle sticks, moon phase recall cards, book of New Moon 7. Grouping Patterns: Individual and whole group. Modification: struggling students will be paired with a peer buddy. (Level of support) 8. Ending, Summary / Reflection Who can tell me what we worked on today? Is it important to know the phases of the moon? Of course it is important to know the phases of the moon because when the full moon is out we want to know if the Cullens will be coming near our neighborhood. 9. Technology: Elmo - show the phase of the moon with the recall cards.
